§ Marine Mascot...."Devil Dog" [read on]

This very short video is cute. At least I think so. Worthy of sharing. My son is a former United States Marine [and the Drill Instructor in the video was an actual drill instructor for the Corps]. That is beside the point. But, I do think if the unit in Nam would've had this devil dog for their mascot instead of Chester, things may have turned out differently!

§ Happy 236th Birthday!!!!

"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!"

                ~Eleanore Roosevelt

"Yes, I know the Marine Corps is part of the United States Navy....the MEN part!!!"

"OOrah"!!!

Before the song loads...a bit of Marine Corps Cadence---
You can keep your Army khaki,
You can keep your Navy blue.
I have the world's best fighting man,
    To introduce to you.

    His uniform is different,
    The best you've ever seen.
The German's called him "Devil Dog,"
    His real name is "Marine"

He was born on Parris Island,
    The place where God forgot.
The sand is eighteen inches deep,
    The sun is blazing hot.

    He gets up every morning,
    Before the rising sun.
He'll run a hundred miles and more,
    Before the day is done.

And when he gets to heaven,
    St. Peter he will tell,
    Another Marine reporting, sir,
I've served my time in Hell.

NOVEMBER 10, 1875-NOVEMBER 10, 2011

From the Halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli
We fight our country's battles
In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title

Of United States Marine.

Our flag's unfurled to every breeze

From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in every clime and place
Where we could take a gun.
In the snow of far-off Northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job --
The United States Marines.

Here's health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we've fought for life
And never lost our nerve.
If the Army and the Navy

Ever look on Heaven's scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded

By United States Marines.

This week, with the military coup over in Pakistan, I salute my military men!!

For some this would be a great, patriotic song, of the inner self...being America. But for me, it's more the strengths of our country's military personnel. If you take the time to read the lyrics you may see in your mind, what I see....the troops going to battle, or protecting our borders, or perhaps you may envision a U. S. Marine going to his assigned deployment to serve country with pride and leaving behind AMERICA -home of the free and land of the brave- only to continue being true to thee.

O, America you’re calling,
I can hear you calling me:

You are calling me to be true to thee,
True to thee… I will be.

O, America no weeping,
Let me heal your wounded heart:
I will keep you in my keeping,

Till there be… a new start.

And I will answer you, and I will take your hand,
And lead you… to the sun:

And I will stand by you…do all that I can do,
And we will be… as one.

O, America I hear you,
From your prairies to the sea,

From your mountains grand, and all through this land,
You are beautiful to me.

And… O, America you’re calling,
I can hear you calling me:

You are calling me to be true to thee,
True to thee… I will be.

And I will answer you, and I will take your hand,
And lead you… to the sun:

And I will stand by you… do all that I can do,
And we will be…as one.

O, America you’re calling…
I will ever answer thee.

WEEKEND FUNNIES

Actually, today there is no rhyme or reason...my funnies are quite eclectic this time. As insane as the "media" has been in the last decade, so too are some funny "signs" you can see. Tho, not intended to be funny in any way, they ARE if you have a mind like mine:

Found this business sign just off the freeway the other day. Now, not only is the poor lawyer sign funny---it's MORE funny to know that ol' Hootin' Anni had to pull off the freeway and drive clear round to get a PICTURE of it!!!

rank: (rangk)
adj. rank·er, rank·est
Strong and offensive in odor or flavor.
Conspicuously offensive: rank treachery. See Synonyms at flagrant.

For this one, don'tcha just LOVE the educated dummies? Houston Astros are at the bottom of the heap in their division...but not only filled with errors...so is the local newspaper coverage by-line!!

What a hoot.

And what goes better with ball games than the great American Ball Park Hot Dogs?!! One that is paper trained!! I do love my hot dogs! Especially after Spring "Training"!

[this one is NOT my photo, but a shared image in a received email]

Two Irish nuns have just arrived in USA by boat and one says to the other, "I hear that the people in this country actually eat dogs." "Odd," her companion replies, "but if we shall live in America, we might as well do as the Americans do." Nodding emphatically, the mother superior points to a hot dog vendor and they both walk towards the cart. "Two dogs, please," says one. The vendor is only too pleased to oblige and he wraps both hot dogs in foil and hands them over the counter. Excited, the nuns hurry over to a bench and begin to unwrap their "dogs." The mother superior is first to open hers. She begins to blush and then, staring at it for a moment, leans over to the other nun and whispers cautiously: "What part did you get?"

With a hubby that was "all Navy" to the fun and poking fun at United States Marines [we have a LOT of Marines in our family, as is our son!!] between son and father, I saw this at the air show and thought it was too good to pass on 'readjusting' the "HOT AIR" and arrows on the plane with my paint shop program and then sending it to Erik...

"Donald Trump often talks about running as a Republican, which is surprising," said the Saturday Night Live actor, entrusted with providing some of the comedy for the evening. "I just assumed he was running as a joke."

In honor of USA's Veteran's Day today and USMC birthday yesterday, I choose a patriotic song. I, personally, hereby solemnly swear....this song, for me, should be our national anthem---

O Beautiful...for spacious skies

...for amber waves of grain

...for purple mountains' majesty

...above the fruited plains

AMERICA, AMERICA
God Shed his grace on thee....

And crowned thy good, with brotherhood--

---from sea to shining sea!!

Photos: top to bottom- Ships' channel at Port Aransas..."Aransas Pass" - Sea Grass going to seed/grain on sand dune [Newport Beach Access] - Scanned photo from an album of older photo by about 40 years...Sangre de Cristo Mountains Colorado/New Mexico border - Goose Island State Park in Texas --oldest Oak Tree [with the 'fruit' of acorns each and every year] estimated over 1000 years old. The 'brotherhood' is one I scanned from our photo albums; the USMC Iwo Jima Memorial near Arlington, VA. And the 'sea to shining sea' is [left] a scanned photo of LaJolla California [near San Diego and the first time I saw the Pacific Ocean] and the Gulf[right], a shrimp boat, in Corpus city's Marina. I couldn't find my photos of Ocean City Maryland ---my first ever time I saw the Atlantic Ocean when landing in Baltimore, MD many years ago..that would've truly be SEA to shining SEA.

The Lyrics:
The words of this song came from a poem of the same title by Katharine Lee Bates (1859 -1929). She wrote the poem in 1893 and then revised it twice; first in 1904 and then in 1913. Bates was a teacher, poet and author of several books including America the Beautiful and Other Poems which was published in 1911. A trek to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado is believed to have inspired Katharine Lee Bates to pen the lyrics to "America the Beautiful." Hence, I scanned a photo of Colorado Mountains!!!! And the reason I wish this song was our National Anthem...it is easier to sing...it's not flubbed up by so many singers, and it tells it all!!!!! Besides, the music to our Anthem is 'stolen' from an old British drinking song....if America was breaking away from the British rule...why then did we choose a British Song?!! Oh, and my favorite version is sung by the late, great Ray Charles [the link provided at the beginning of my post]...........

I love the heavy, intense greenery lasting nearly the entire year. And the backwoods Louisiana Bayou atmosphere of this area. Sometimes mysterious; other times just simply beautiful with the sun filtering through the many species of trees. That, and with one outstanding feature...the sounds of silence!!!! At times, I find myself thinking of Tia in Pirates of the Caribbean [at world's end] with all her magic....the sea goddess, Calypso. It's Paradise. Guess that's why we Texans call it Paradise Ponds........

Just a photo of me at the parking lot of beach access near Whitecap on the island the other day. I'm pointing at my new Proud Parent of a Marine car decal - the old one I had on the trunk was badly faded. I then cropped the photo and am now using it as my blogger profile image.

PS...Wednesday evening, I'll be posting here about a new meme I set up for fun and challenge. Do return for a visit if you can!!

PSS...Oorah is a chant call for the Marines. It's spoken a lot around our household and during phone conversations with Erik, our Marine. Once a Marine, always a Marine. And another note, our car is especially USMC colors...the Marine Colors are Scarlet and Gold...our car is red with gold interior. Yes, if you really wonder, I AM a Proud Parent of a Marine!! He, among thousands of others put his life on the front line during the Gulf War.

List of 2009 Photo Hunt themes by the week

Veterans and/or Military is the theme this week for PHOTO HUNT.

...and I'm saying what could be more apropos for this week in USA. November 11th is Veteran's Day. But, November 10th is the United States Marine Corps' 234th Birthday. It was, back then, called the Continental Marines. Today, it's the FEW, THE PROUD, THE MARINES. I, for one, have two former Marines in my family. My older 'middle' brother. And my son. Both served during war times. The Korean Conflict and the Gulf War. Probably the most infamous part of the Marine Corps is the flag on Iwo Jima during World War II. But for me, the most infamous Marine photo is this---

TOOL

Long long time ago, I had one of these. Not quite a 'fancy smanchy' one like this tho. Thing is, I've always enjoyed looking for unusual rocks as I go walking. I found a really NEAT 'rock' on Corpus' North Shore when we vacationed here years ago. Yes, I packed it in my suitcase [it is medium sized -about the size of a small cantaloupe...and VERY heavy] and it came back home with me. It was long before airport security. LOL Anyway, I always knew it was a piece of some kind of petrified wood. It still has the 'bark'. And I still have it! Yep, you got that right...I moved it with me. The rock/wood is back home again. LOL Perhaps, in its native land. Okay, so thing is, I began getting curious about the petrified wood that I so lovingly packed a few times. It's been outdoors in our yard. And I see it as I do yard work. Now the curiosity got the better of me. I have access to internet these days [duh! Well, I didn't have access long long ago when I found the wood] and I started searching around. For what, I didn't really have a clue. Then, doing some Texas research, I came upon a site that talked/told about petrified PALMwood being Texas' State Stone. [Louisiana has the petrified wood as their state fossil]. I clicked on the link. Yessiree...that is what I had. At least, I think so. It's called petrified palmwood. It's found along the eastern shores of the state...and also along the borders of the two states inland. Hmmmmm. The more I researched the more I found that it's actually found throughout most of the lower counties of the state. One county in particular...the county seat, George West, is just a few miles north of us here in our part of Texas. When it gets to be winter time again, I'm gonna take a day's jaunt up there and drive along the country roads....see if I can find more.

Okay. So, enough gab. Why I want another rock polisher/tumbler? We have landscaping rock around the back foundation of the house...along the patio and between the patio and one of our elevated rose gardens. It's sized between pea gravel and river rock. Anyway, many times I've pulled weeds from the rock. And I've noticed small pieces of what appears to be petrified wood in the landscape rock. Now that I found out about it being Texas' state stone and a fossil....I'm in their like a bitin' sow!! I've picked up many, many pieces that I've found and hoarded. Now I want the TOOL to clean 'em properly!!

Stay tuned...I've photographed some of the pieces and will blog about it. Someday this week. Hopefully, Show N Tell Friday. I just yesterday emailed a geologist here in town. He emailed me back, and asked that I send some pictures to him. And I just forwarded some photos of the 'rock' I found. Maybe he can identify them through the photos. Hopefully. I'll perhaps know if I have the just 'wood' or in fact have found Palmwood! Or perhaps, not EVEN wood. It sure looks like wood to me! LOLOLOL

It's a bit of an emotional ride, this piece of art. It's something I thought of ordering while Erik was away from home...in boot camp in San Diego. No, not this piece but something quite similar. Only after he was back home from his tour of duty did I indulge myself, and bought one like I'd seen while he was away.. It has brought me courage sometimes, tears other times. The ups and downs emotions of a mom of a United States Marine. Pride...Fear and Patriotism. It's a music box. One that shows the Eagle Globe and Anchor of the USMC emblem atop a staffed Old Glory. When I think of what he went through for the first 8 weeks I am in awe of his stamina. When I listen to the music, tears well. Not only from the pride I feel of his accomplishing a dream of his, but for the sacrifices we as parents deal with during the time our children go off to war and are put in harm's way 24/7.

The reverse side shows you the sound construction of the art work and the golden finishing touches along with the distinct stars which are indented a bit for depth. The colors don't bleed....they are true Red, White and Blue. Around the base there are several pieces of ceramic tiles. The one on the back side has two simple words. SEMPER FIDELIS. The USMC motto.

The Eagle, Globe and Anchor lifts off. To reveal the wind key for the mechanism to play the music. And of course, the music is the United States Marines' theme....in all actuality, the title is the Marine's Hymn.

The other ceramic tiles around the base state COMMITTMENT [devotion to my Corps and fellow Marines], COURAGE [Do the right thing, in the right way, for the right reasons], and HONOR [integrity, responsibility, and accountability]. It's an original by Ardleigh Elliott, copyrighted in 2001. Numbered 2518 out of 5000 made.

A masqueraded glance
set off a quivering passion.
So beguiled was he,
he approached the flaxen-haired enchantress
and asked for that dance.
They, as one, promenaded
the hours away through the night,
fell in love before the dawn.
Only to be entranced forever;
the glimmer of life together...
the finale from
her first blue-eyed glance.
