HODGEPODGE

1. George Washington-Abraham Lincoln-Thomas Jefferson...who would you most like to meet and why? Golly, I can't say all three? George Washington would be a choice #3 I guess. Only 'cause a distant kin was with him and died crossing the Delaware on, I believe, Christmas Day in 1776. Thomas Jefferson would probably be my 2nd choice just 'cause the man was BRILLIANT [at least in history books] ---but Abraham Lincoln has always been a favorite of mine. Slavery, being from a poor side of town so to speak, becoming a prominent lawyer and then going all the way to the top of the country?!!! That's gotta be a man with balls. Oh, and to be honest, I would've loved to know John Wilkes Booth also ---just to see what 'triggered' the man...what made him click...I would love to be able to interview him and then write his biography. Weird, huh? I've been to Ford's Theater [and New Salem] several times and find Lincoln's era so very fascinating in our history.

2. What's your favorite chain restaurant? Scold me if you will...but I came here in 2004 and there was no Jack in the Box. Well, I proceeded to email them and get them to open a franchise in town. They did the following year, opened 4 actually. And the grand opening of the first, believe it or not, they had to have police to direct traffic. But that is NOT my favorite chain restaurant. I don't consider it a restaurant in the first place. I guess my favorite would be CHEDDARS ---their Monte Carlo sandwiches are 'to die for'.

3. I spied this question on the Bears at Home blog last week and she gave me permission to steal borrow it- When you look back on your life, do you imagine you'll think about the goals you failed to meet with regret? Or will you look at what you accomplished and say: it was good? I remember her random question from last week ---and I responded: I always look at the positive and never dwell on 'what might have been'. It's always a move forward for me, and happy to have accomplished something. If not, well then, in 100 years it won't make a difference anyway.

4. Grapefruit-take 'em or leave 'em? Given the choice between an orange and a grapefruit which would you choose? Would you prefer it served as is or squeezed into juice? I really like 'em both. But, there is a drawback here with my heart meds. I've been told that the blood pressure medication I am on; I should NOT consume grapefruit. I guess there is a long term interaction with the fruit and the drug; could be fatal [has been] over time. But oranges would be my choice anyway. I love 'em. Sweet....juicy....juicy sweet. And there is no preference for me. Just gimme!!!

5. When was the last time you cleaned out a closet? Is there a closet in your home that currently needs cleaning? What are you waiting for? I clean closets out twice a year. Except for one. Clothes closets get cleaned in Spring and Fall. It's just to keep up with the seasons. The only closet that doesn't get cleaned out much is the foyer [front door coat closet] ---only 'cause we only need to wear coats about a week total out of the 365 days in a year.

6. You get to have lunch with three famous people...who would you like to see 'round your table? I think it'd be more easily jotting down three I wouldn't want at my table. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie would be two. And ya....Lady Gaga. They're all just plain weird. LOL Hmmmm, famous people at my lunch table----do they have to be living? I guess so, huh? LOL Okay...well, my next question would be "how famous"....I will begin with 1] Derek Jeter [NY Yankees' short stop]---did you know his middle name is Sanderson? Well, now you do. 2] Queen Elizabeth, and 3] Actually coming up with two was most difficult...I guess to round it off, it'd be: "Would the Mystery Guest please sign in?----number three would be Paul Hewson. Better known as BONO of U2.

7. On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate your ability to parallel park? :::snort::: You didn't give a "0" as a choice!!!!! Let's put it this way, if the street is free of parked cars, I can do it. But if I had to park between two that are parked parallel then...forgit 'bout it. I'll drive around 'til I find an 'easy' place.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
When I change my background template for the 'time of year', like today, I tend to search out a quote by someone to add below the Blog Header. For this Mardi Gras template I designed...I think the quote by Schulz could very well be said about me. And Mardi Gras season is shown as an overly 'happy' time to celebrate. Well I am happy at least; so I must be doing something right...I just can't figure it out what it is.

HODGEPODGE

1. A new Miss America was crowned on Saturday night-did you watch? If you were a contestant what would your talent be? No, don't watch them. My 'cup of tea' for style and grace are the Oscars. LOL My talent? Oh gosh, probably playing the piano....tho, I haven't tinkled in almost 10 years!! :::insert snort:::

2. Do you have houseplants? Real or fake? I have just a few...real. My plants are mainly outdoors in soil or in pots on the patio. [Remember, we have cats, and indoor plants need to be high up to keep them from chewing on them.]

3. When you were in school did you speak up or were you more of the hide your face, avoid eye contact, and pray the teacher didn't call on you type of student? From about 4th grade on....I won a few class accolades that year...I was no longer the bashful girl; ending up being somewhat popular - school plays, acting club, booster club, math club, one year I was class secretary, etc. Before then, I stuck my head in the sand and remained quiet, only showing up to do my work and go home and play.

4. Next Monday marks the Chinese New Year...what do you order when someone suggests Chinese food? Chinese food? Whoa...I always make sure I go somewhere for Chicken Teriyaki. But, in all honesty, I think it's a Japanese dish. With Fried Rice and tons of soy sauce. I guess if you get down to it, the Chinese dish would be shrimp egg rolls. I love the hot and sour soup also...or egg drop soup which I haven't had in years. Question is, can I use chopsticks? Nope.

5. How would you define a miracle? What would it take for you to consider something a miracle? Something extraordinary --- and, that would be the same answer for the 2nd part.

6. What's your favorite Disney song? Jiminy Crickett singing When You Wish Upon a Star!!!

7. I should have gone to the beach yesterday. Instead, stayed home and did laundry, and helped Bud a bit on the kitchen floor.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
One of my favorite thoughts from a hero of mine... "My theory on housework is, if the item doesn't multiply, smell, catch fire, or block the refrigerator door, let it be. No one else cares. Why should you?"
                            ~ Erma Bombeck

Also, I must apologize for not visiting those who left comments yesterday ---We've been busy doing the kitchen floor tiles...got 'em all ripped up, now we have to lay the new tiles. Hope I'm forgiven.

ADDED: Today, some well-known, popular sites on the internet are protesting with a 'blackout'...I understand their issues. But thing is, this Congressional Bill that is a threat to 'freedom of information' [such as an encyclopedia ---aka Wikipedia]. Will it pass? Is it really a threat? I question the action, only because the 'insiders'...a partial group of volunteers who help keep the site up and running smoothly are wholly against the 24 hour blackout. Why? Well, read the article if you must. Will this protest work and keep sites like the one I mention up and working without censorship? Who knows. Everyone has a right to their own opinions!! I've seen other sites already today that are banding together for support on this particular action/blackout. I'm just not sure a 24 hour hold-out will get Congress to notice and work ahead on getting something done. It's up to the individual here ---do as you think is best for the life of the internet. I, for one, think it's probably a good idea...perhaps. It's all a big question mark for me tho, 'cause I haven't kept up with the politicking on this much at all.

WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE

1. Lake Superior University has once again published a list of words/phrases they think should be banished from the Queen's English in 2012- amazing, baby bump, shared sacrifice, occupy, blowback, man cave, the new normal, pet parent, win the future, trickeration, ginormous, and thank you in advance. -Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Let me put it this way...I LOVE the words ginormous and amazing...but in all actuality, the word I would dearly want to be banished from the English Language is NOT here. The "F" word. I know it's just a word, but I hear it and read it so often [sometimes every other word spoken and in one particular movie that starred Paul Newman 'The Verdict'...it was in the script by a ginormous amount, I got up and walked out about midway through the movie to never return and I've not watched it even with it edited]; it just makes me cringe. Which brings me to reason: "profanity is used when the speaker lacks the intelligence to find an appropriate word to use in its stead."

2. Are you easily embarrassed? Nah!! Too old for embarrassment.

3. What is your go-to snack? Frozen Yogurt.

4. Have you ever been to Washington D.C.? If not do you have any desire to go? What site/attraction would you most want to see in that city? If you have been, what's your favorite site/attraction? Oh yes...several times. I spent a month there one summer way back in the late 60s, just learning about politics. The sights back then, were the Capitol building [and I had the opportunity to go on the subway from there to the senate building] - the Lincoln Memorial - and the IWO JIMA memorial near the Arlington Cemetery. In fact, EVERYTHING about the city. In the later years, the Viet Nam Memorial is something to behold and truly, it's humbling!! Oh, and the tidal Basin at night...breathtaking. Not to forget the Cherry Blossoms in Spring. Oh, and the Potomac Riverboat down the river to Mt. Vernon...I can still see the interior of the mansion in my mind right now as I type...it's filled with charm and even just the portraits are full of history - JFK's eternal flame - the Changing of the Guard leaves anyone to see them absolutely speechless.

5. sit ups-planks-lunges-squats...which do you hate the least? I can't say I hate any...don't do any of that.

6. What's a small act of kindness you were shown that you've never forgotten? Generosity in so many ways to list here. I'm forever grateful.

7. Have you ever been a blood donor? Yes.

8. Insert your own random thought here. ...and the girl doesn't even show fear; she sticks around. I'd be peeing my pants and running for cover while other patrons would be slipping in my [censor here]....find themselves in need of a pooper scooper, trust me!!

EMERALD EYES -yacht's name
notice the satellite dish to the far left - I guess that's called the bow of the boat--for TV I'm sure. A yacht with a TV...must be one difficult life to have such a luxury when out to sea, huh? LOL Oh, and on the stern [to the right in the photo, a small wind generator?] Whoa. But, I LOVE the emerald green sails!!!

WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE

1. What song reminds you of a specific time in your life and what is it about that song that makes you remember? I answered the phone...it was a phone call from my youngest older brother. He told me that our dad passed away. I drove to my dad's house to find my brother there pacing the floor. To make a long story short: When I finally drove home with blurred vision through my tears, I heard the song on the car's radio: "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You?" by Michael Bolton. That's just how I was feeling at the time. I had to pull off off the street into a parking lot and bawl my eyes out....and the song still reminds me of that day back in 1994 when dad left us behind.

2. What's something you've given up on? Congress as it is today. I want to vote 'em ALL out of office. If only I could rally each and every state's registered voters to follow suit.

3. What's something you'll never give up on? Freedom/Our Rights as American citizens.

4. If you had to cook something from scratch in the next hour what would it be? Right now, being this early? I'm thinking a breakfast omelet with peppers, ham chunks, cheese, onion, and salsa....with toast.

5. Have you started Christmas shopping? Decorating? Listening to Christmas music? No. Well, no in a way anyway. I'm window shopping; getting ideas. It's just the two of us so, what I send to our kids and grandkids has been purchased already. So, yes and no would have to be my answer. I guess. I always get Bud a little something special, but again...like I said, just window shopping right now. And as for music and decorating. Not yet, that is for the week after Thanksgiving for my tradition.

6. What do you know about your parent's wedding? I know what day, WHERE, and who was witness to the event. That's all.

7. I can't believe I am not gonna be cooking a Thanksgiving dinner this year. It's a FIRST for me. For over 50 years and especially 43 years of married life I've either cooked the entire meal, or prepared pies, desserts, main courses or something. Nope, not this year. And it'll be a very odd thing I'm sure.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
I love humor, and I love to know sharing humor makes one smile/giggle! It's good for the soul. A local priest and a rabbi were fishing on a bank on the side of a road. They thoughtfully made a sign saying, "The End is Near! Turn yourself around now before it's too late!" and showed it to each passing car. One driver that drove by didn't appreciate the sign and shouted at them: "Leave us alone, you religious nuts!" All of a sudden the two men fishing heard a big splash. They looked each other and the priest said to the rabbi, "You think we should just put up a sign that says 'Bridge Out' instead?"

And a secondly:

§ You may know what this is.....do you?

...the majority of photos are dark, I know. But, I didn't want all the light of the room reflecting.

THEY'RE CALLED:
GALILEO THERMOMETERS---

Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) discovered that the density of liquids change as the temperature varies. This scientific principle has become an elegant and functional work of art; The Galileo Thermometer. When the temperature rises, the liquid in the glass tube becomes less dense, causing the floating glass spheres to sink one by one.

I now have one thanks to Hobby Lobby's 50% off coupon!! [without a coupon, they're very costly, as you can see the prices with the link I have below] And it is MOST fascinating. I have yet to see a water bubble rise or drop -actually in motion that is, but I keep hoping. And, I have it placed in the dining room for photographing only...it's normally NOT within reach of our cats. LOL

To read how to read the temperature...peruse this site

Now, for some Wednesday's meme -HODGEPODGE...

1. Of all the tools and gadgets you own which do you most enjoy using? LOL....okay, y'all know my mind is most always in the gutter when it comes to questions like these...can I say a dildo is a gadget? NO? Okay...I won't. Guess in all seriousness, gadget #1 is my electric toothbrush...and the screwdriver is my most handy dandy of tools. I use it for more than just screwing. Oh, oh...there I go again. Move on down...shall we? Next question?----

2. When (if ever) is impatience a virtue? Sometimes...with customer [REPAIR] service. Yep, sometimes I just need to vent and get things fixed the right way this time. And sometimes I tell them just that ---"If you would have fixed it right in the first place, you wouldn't have to contend with me right now".

3. What temperature do you keep your thermostat set to in winter? Do you have another way to heat your house besides a furnace of some type? Around here, we really don't need a furnace but just a couple of days all winter. And we've never had to use it but maybe once or twice since we've moved here seven years ago. If it gets too chilly by early morning --we have firewood for the fireplace. But we've never had to use it so far. Actually, the only thing we need to keep warm is a pair of sweats or a sweater until the sun comes up. BTW...we've had to run the air conditioner a few times in late November!

4. Do/did you have a close relationship with any of your grandparents?
I was born too late. Three of my grandparents died by the time I was 5. My one grandparent that survived to live even long enough to meet Bud shortly after we were married...well, he was a super wonderful, fun-loving grandpa. He lived to be 96!! By the way...on Bud's side of the family, his maternal grandmother lived to be 103. Whoa!!! She was a 'card' too. Deaf - read lips. It was a super life happening for me to get to know her. She always whispered to Bud wondering why I was always barefooted...."Can't you support your own wife, and buy the girl some shoes?"

5. When did you last have a family portrait taken?
Never with our two kids. But Bud and I had a portrait made of the two of us for our 25th anniversary. Which was nearly that...nearly 20 years ago.

6. What does the word patriotism mean to you? These days it's hard to see any with the government the way it is. I remember once seeing a T shirt that had "I love my country...but the government sucks". I do have the same sentiments a lot these days. Actually, some may think this odd, but when I see one of those 5'x3' HUGE stars and stripes flowing in the breeze...I easily get teary-eyed. It represents our freedoms.

7. Do you like to play cards and if so, what's your favorite card game? I love to play cards. And miss our Friday night card games with my folks. We'd play to the wee hours of the following morning....poker, uno, whist, rummy, pinochle, hearts. Beers, Pepsi, pretzels, pizza...it was all on Friday night. Now-a-days, when our kids visit, we end up playing all the ones mentioned above. If it's just the two of us, Bud and I will play Gin Rummy. Or Cribbage. LOVE card games, I do. Bud hates uno...but I force him to play once in a while.

8. Insert your own random thought here. Y'all know the expression "Making Whoopie", right? So tell me. Just what is a whoopie cushion made of then? On the other hand, in my experience, another random thought...most arguments are caused by a misunderstanding of the fact that I am always the one that is right.

The Hodgepodge Part...

1. How do you typically react in a sudden, extreme, pressure-filled crisis? Would we want you nearby in an emergency? Actually, I think I would have to answer this with "it depends" on the emergency. If it entails a family crisis, I try to remain calm and coherent. But heck, these days an emergency could be a terrorist act...or a huge storm destroying our house and home. And, to be honest, I don't know HOW I would react. [Don't wanna know 'cause I wouldn't want to experience.]

2. Caramel apple-caramel sundae-caramel corn-caramel macchiato...of the four, which carmel treat would you choose? Caramel Apples. I love 'em.

3. Is there such a thing as destiny? Explain. If you're referring to the word/term, destiny...ya, I think there is such a thing. What happens is something that was destined for the future. Oftentimes I have stated "that fate had something to do with it". Oh, and if you're referring to a gal named Destiny...then, ya there is that too.

4. What's your favorite piece of furniture? I'm referring to something currently in your possession as opposed to something on your wish list. Depends on the time of day...early morning, my favorite piece of furniture is my office chair. During the day...it could be the couch that is by the patio door....bright sunny area. Ya, I think it's more the AREA that the couch is placed by instead of the 'piece of furniture'. At night...it's my waterbed. Yep, I never parted with my waterbed. Cool in the summer....warm in the winter. But here again, to be honest...furniture is NOT something I'm 'liking'...now that I'm retired, furniture is just a possession and not important.

5. Wednesday night marks the start of the 2011 Baseball World Series. Did you know? Do you care? Will you be watching? Ever been to a professional baseball game? If you're not an American do you find the title 'World Series' annoying or amusing? Ha!! You don't stop by often, do you? I'm talking about baseball periodically throughout the time from Spring Training to the World Series!! And yes....I'll watch. I don't think I've missed more games than I can count on my fingers one time around in all my married life. And yes, I've been to the Rockies games often. We had season tickets during their first year as a franchise. And I've seen the D'Backs games ---even traveled from Colorado to Tucson years ago to follow the Spring Training at Hi Corbet Field. Been to the farm team games for the Houston Astros also. As for "world series" I'd much prefer and use the term FALL CLASSIC.

6. A sound that takes me back to my childhood is____________. Right now, as I type, the sound of an air gun brings back my youth. I used to get the use of my dad's car several days a week...he worked for the City Government where we lived and I'd have to drive to pick him up after work....and waiting around for him, the sound of the air gauge I'd hear many times before it was quitting time.

7. On average, once you've linked your hodgepodge post to mine how many other participant blogs do you visit? Do you ever come back to the Hodgepodge later in the day or even the day after to read posts? I try to visit as many as I can.

8. Insert your own random thought here. I really have three...Two random: The Winds of Change are blowing in!! Cold Front coming our way! Yay. And -- Everyone has some beautiful Autumn Foliage on their blogs. Alas, we don't get the tree color change around here 'til mid December. I have a really pretty pic somewhere in my photo archives on my computer/folder somewhere from last year. I must dig it up and post it here soon. Then, the not so random thought: CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND A GOOD HORROR/THRILLER BOOK for me to read?! I'm so in the mood to have a spine tingling novel to read. I've read a few Stephen King novels, they're just okay. Koontz? Nah. Yesterday in fact, I went to Barnes n Nobel looking for a good book from that genre...nothing but Vampire books. I'll be glad when that craze peters out!!!

§ Early morn in September...

End of Outdoor/Watery/Wordless Wednesday - what follows is another meme that will be my first attempt ----WEDNESDAY HODGEPODGE.

*- *-* -*

HODGEPODGE [link on sidebar]

1. What's your favorite meal to serve on a chilly autumn evening?
I'd have to say any kind of hot, bubbly, soup. From Ham and Split Pea to a spicy chili con carne. Oh, and my favorite side dish with the chili would be a huge tossed salad AND to accompany it it wouldn't be crackers but......a warm, fresh cinnamon roll. The cinnamon compliments the spicy chili so well!!! Try it.

2. Are you a creature of habit? Explain.
Probably. If you ask family members, but to surprise them...I'll take a wrong turn on purpose just to bum-fuzzle 'em good!!

3. What food product (no longer available) do you remember and miss from days gone by?
Y'know, this time of year it's caramel apple season...and long ago, the grocery stores had 'daffied' apples. They were delicious. The red sweet candy coating...caramel like but tasting more like red licorice and the red candy coating was then dipped and covered in crushed dried, crunchy, sugared oats. Now all I see is the same red caramel apples but all are covered with peanuts instead...what happened?!!!

4. What's something you've lost that you've never been able to find? Any theories as to what happened?
    My mind!! Theories: Having kids!!!

5. Zoo~circus~carnival...your favorite?
Zoo! Most definitely. Circuses are too repetitive. I can go to a circus in 2011 and the show/shows are still the same ol' same ol' that was on the venue when I was a kid some 50 years ago. Carnivals...nah. Too commercialized.

6. What song makes you feel instantly happy?
From Risky Business..."GIMME THAT OLD TIME ROCK AND ROLL"

7. To what extent are you an argumentative person?
That depends on who you ask. If it were me you want a response from then, I'd say I don't argue. There is a right way a wrong way and Anni's way. So why argue...just prove myself right.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
The past week or so, I've been craving this on the menu and tried to replicate it at home...nada, zilch, nothing. It did nothing to satiate my 'hunger/craving' ---Right about now, I'd give both my ovaries for a McDonald's Fish Filet Sandwich and Fries...supersize it. What the heck. Thing is....I have no ovaries left to trade!!

WEDNESDAY'S WARBLING...

Bud: "Anni, did you go out to get the mail yet?"
Anni: "No, it's too hot for me." "It'll all be there in the morning."
Bud, slipping on his outdoor shoes: "Tsk, tsk. Guess I'll go out and bring it in."
Anni: "Okay...you're my brave 'wittle' hero."

When upon his returning indoors, I ask:

Anni: "So, is it hot enough for you?"
Bud: "I'll tell you just how hot it is and how hot the last 30 days have been." "Look at this!!"

He throws the opened envelope on the table, I glance quickly and fall over as he catches me in midair....

Anni: "Ho-o-o-ly CRAP. If it weren't for the cats' comfort, we really should conserve more!!" :::evil grin:::

Bud, struggling to keep from dropping me to the floor says: "Ya, right, and that's your excuse, and you're stickin' by it, right"? ...as the air conditioner hums softly.

Alas, the utility bill for the month of July tripled from the previous month. Since back then, the A/C has been running 24/7. Lordy!!! roflmao. I gotta laugh...otherwise I'd go crazy. But of course, if I DID go crazy, it'd be a really short trip arriving.

- - -

Oh, and by the way...
the drought continues to scorch the whole state of Texas. Of the 254 counties, there are now 249 counties that have outdoor fire bans!!! That's a state record, if you really wanted to know. Secretly, I thought you did.

§ If you DREAM it...it'll COME!!

Someone told me long ago
There's a calm before the storm,

I know
It's been comin' for some time.

When it's over, so they say,
It'll rain a sunny day,

I know
Shinin' down like water.

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain

Comin down on a sunny day

Yesterday, and days before,
Sun is cold and rain is hard,

I know
Been that way for all my time.

'Til forever, on it goes
Through the circle, fast and slow,
I know
It can't stop, I wonder.

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain

I want to know, have you ever seen the rain

Comin down on a sunny day
