§ Harnessing Nature

NATURE NOTES & WILD BIRD WEDNESDAY -Finally, after nearly two weeks of overcast skies, the cloud cover broke and blue sky showed itself again!!! Tho, the cold front didn't really move out; it remained quite chilly of the mornings...Bud and I wanted to get out of the house so badly after the bout of near pneumonia symptoms, we hopped in the car and drove to the islands early Sunday morning. More or less, just to view the world around us. Seems a long two weeks of being cooped up inside, coughing. The nasty flu bug is finally subsiding and all's right with the world again. At least where it concerns ourselves. LOL We didn't spend much time walking and birding because, as I said, the cold front remained and the early morning wind was cold...tho refreshing. We stopped at a birding area along the ship channel in Port A, and walked the paved pathway. This particular pathway is not shaded and in full sun. We saw mockingbirds, a loggerhead shrike, several ducks and shovelers on the nearby pond, and four beautiful Savannah Sparrows.  And more at other birding refuges...

This past weekend began the international Christmas Bird Count [CBC]. While we were out, on Sunday, this is my bird count that day...

...some have not been identified yet, but photos were taken for record. Once I have time to ID them by the end of the bird count on January 8, 2014, I will have a total tally and proper identification; I hope!!

Another note on nature: In the past few decades, capturing energy from natural resources has become a part of our every-day lives. Solar Energy Panels on roof-tops, for one. Another is Wind Turbines. I remember the first time I saw a wind turbine 'farm'. It was just before sunrise and the sky was beginning to turn the pale blue-gray as I looked out the car's windshield. I was driving along Interstate 10 heading from Fort Stockton, Texas. Everywhere I looked along the horizon I saw these tall, monstrous white windmills jutting up from the fields. With the early morning lighting and the silence of me being in the car alone, well...it made for an eerie feeling. Like something out of a Sci-Fi movie. Now, today, they're just about everywhere you go. At one area near town, between my city and crossing the North Bay after coming down off the Harbor Bridge...in the far distance, near the town of Portland, Texas...the entire landscape just above the water's surface, the wind generators [turbines] are seen. As we walk along the Sunset Lake Park path, off of our shoulders they loom up just above the tree-tops. I zoomed in on some. Mind you, this is not as close as it looks when we're on the birding/biking path...these are actually a mile or more distance from where I stood and snapped this photo:

Another way of capturing nature's resources is found at the bottom of the sea. This image I share is taken from the same Sunset Lake Park between Corpus Christi and Portland, Texas. The distance is great from where I stand. The scene is out in the bay looking toward a small, one time naval base town of Ingleside, Texas. I'm really not sure if this is oil or natural gas. Your guess is as good as mine...






Joyce's Wednesday Hodgepodge this week are these questions -


1. Do you believe in miracles? I personally think everyone believes in miracles. I do.

2. What's a recent fad you admit to trying? It's not all that recent, what is meant by recent?!! I guess it would be my Kindle Reader. I remember stuff/things like mini-skirts [ya baby!!] and cut off jean shorts--did you ever wear jean shorts and go traipsing around all the fraternities to get your butt branded with their brand? I did! But that was eons ago. I had a whole slew of all the guys' fraternity brands.

3. Peppermint-are you a fan? If so, what's your favorite food or beverage containing peppermint? It's okay. It would be the peppermint hard candy mints for me.

4. Break the ice, on thin ice, as cold as ice (emotionally, not literally)...which phrase have you run into most recently? Explain. Of the three...it would be our government walking on thin ice. And no explanation needed...self-explanatory.

5. Have you ever broken or spilled something in someone else's home? Still friends? Not that I recall.

6. 'Tis the week before Christmas...are you feeling more like Buddy the Elf or the Grinch before his heart grew? For the holidays, I'm always cheerful and ready for Christmas.

7. Share a favorite quote relating to Christmas. So many I can think of, but you want just one....Okay, this one is from the movie Polar Express and it's Santa talking to the boy who doesn't believe in Santa until he gets to the North Pole----Santa Claus: "This bell is a wonderful symbol of the spirit of Christmas - as am I. Just remember, the true spirit of Christmas lies in your heart."

It seems, once again, G=00=Gle has instigated another few new features that may startle you or surprise you. Photo features are now part of the integral scheme of things. All automatic unless you decide to take control of your own blog posts and photo enhancements...or decide that you want control again. It's my understanding that it's just for those who are utilizing G=00=Gle+. If you are, and you have noticed that your images [which to me changing them as they do without your knowledge is a breech of copyright...but what do I know!?!! Might be that your agreeing to their TOS has given them the right...but I still think it's wrong of them], you can change the way they add effects and enhance your images. Here's how. Be logged into your account. Take your cursor and to the top left...find the 'settings'. For me it was the drop down feature. Click on settings. Find this section of the window that opens...

...uncheck "auto awesome"

and, if you've noticed that your images change contrast, darkness/lightness...you may want to click the radio button just above the "auto awesome" [called auto enhance] to OFF.

And then make sure your setting changes are saved.  As far as I know, the feature is just for those using the plus version when blogging.

§ I'm dreamin' of a grand time together....

Joyce has these questions for us this week:

1. How will you spend 'the night before Christmas'? Honestly, I really don't have any idea until my sister and her husband arrive this week; then plans will be made.

2. What is one thing you are not? At this time of preparing the Hodgepodge post, I'm NOT fully awake.

3. Fudge-are you a fan? Your favorite flavor? Actually, I like it somewhat....the best way for me is HOT atop vanilla ice cream with pecans sprinkled on top of that; hot fudge sundae---yum.

4. Did you attend any craft/vendor fairs in the month of December? Do you prefer homemade goodies or the more professional stalls? Are you giving any homemade gifts this year? We usually go to the peddler's show [a huge event, with hundreds of stalls from around the country, held at the fairgrounds in our county...but it's always the first weekend of November]. And I usually like both kinds of stalls...homemade AND professional. Unless it has to do with 'men things' like car stuff, football and/or hunting. I'd much prefer the jewelry stalls above all else. Homemade OR professional with precious stones. Two things homemade this year will be the entire Christmas Day meal.   Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, yams, salad, oven baked rolls, cranberries...etc.  On the dessert menu for the day, I'm gonna make blackberry pie and lemon meringue pie along with chocolate mint cookies and homemade oatmeal/raisin/pecan cookies....the 2nd is my 'homemade' Genealogy Book that took me months to research - I had it published for sister, Sharon, and brother in law [if you follow me often and read most of my posts you'll know I had the book printed out in book form!!]

5. What's your favorite type of holiday gathering?  In all honesty, the best greeting/gathering is at home;  Christmas music in the background, a hug and kiss from Bud first thing Christmas morn, then having our pets on our laps, just enjoying the quiet of the day to contemplate being alive, well, and happy together. In the past, when much younger, holiday dinners and parties ---well, afterward; the day after, no one was feeling their best.  It's just not worth it.  I like the peace and quiet best.  Boring, I know.

6. We're approaching a new year...what's going to be different in 2013? As far as I know, nothing will be different [unless the Mayans are right?!!]...retired and routine is our cup of tea....but again, it's the future, no one knows for sure.

7. Share a favorite scripture, quote, saying, or song lyric relating to peace. Easy peasy....this is a quote from the late Jimi Hendrix I believe.  And it says it all: "When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace."

8. Insert your own random thought here. This will be my last post until 2013. [I do however, have the Birding Photo Meme that some of you participate in set up to preschedule posting each Saturday while on hiatus. So, if you have bird photos...stop by I'd Rather B Birdin and share your photo post link!!] I'm taking the two weeks off to be with guests, and entertaining, doing a little travel around Texas, sightseeing, So, I'd like to wish everyone a happy holiday season and may your new year be filled with everything you dream of for the days that lie ahead. Today'll be the first showing at the theaters of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. We very seldom go to movies these days 'cause there are none that really really interest us anymore. Seems most movies now are geared toward the teens or children. Altho, I admit I love the animated, children's movies a lot. LOL But the influx of vampire themes...nope. And I do believe that genre is finally dying down!! Anyway....we both want to see the conclusion of the 'Batman'/Christian Bale Trilogy, but we both decided we'll wait until the crowds thin a bit after a week or two. Just read where there was a bomb and several killed in Aurora Colorado at the early showing of this film?!!!!! Whoa.

I found a very interesting article about a bird species that in the 1950s [in Texas] they had all but disappeared. And the Peregrine Fund is here, as they were last weekend, to release the once thought near extinct species of falcon, they're reintroducing them to our island and prairies! The APLOMADO FALCON. I am all for it, but I am also saddened to learn that the beautiful falcon's life expectancy is very short...hope they get a chance to reproduce quickly, before some redneck decides to shoot 'em down for sport.

With my zoom camera, I've become obsessed with photography...and now added, as you know, is the obsession of birding. I began this past Sunday a bird photography meme since the one I participated in previously had 'closed its doors'. I still wanted to see and share bird photos, so began the meme "The Bird D'Pot". If you ever have any photos of birds...be they backyard birds, or photos of when you're out walking and take a picture of a bird...share the link. The meme is open all week long...but a new list of participants comes up each Sunday to give us a reason to update MORE photos not yet shared.

Our two cats are PAWticipating in the Summer Olympics for 'fur babies' through blogging. Links found on my sidebar. Everybody's a winner.

I've realized that without cable TV anymore, I don't miss professional baseball as anticipated!!! Oh I still keep track of the teams' standings and such online, but the actual watching the games...not missed at all!!! In fact, I find I get in much more reading time, and the kitchen counter is kept free and clear of clutter. LOL Oh. and I KNOW I won't miss professional football when the season begins...I have never really watched all that much football since John Elway retired. Too much commercialism with THAT sport on TV.

Speaking of movies above, we found at Wal Mart the DVD - on sale, J. Edgar [a bio-drama of FBI's J. Edgar Hoover]...the reviews never made it to top off the charts when in the theaters, but I found it all quite interesting. And, had to go out online to read more about his secretary of some 54 years...Ms. Gandy. An odd bunch of characters, tho a bit dry in theatrical performances, it still was somewhat enlightening. For instance, I didn't realize he was gay 'til I watched the movie. But, of course, I really didn't know the history behind the FBI until the movie either.

Monday, I visited with Faye at Summit Musings, and she had a quotation that I really really liked...."If you see the world in black and white, you're missing important grey matter." ~Jack Fyock I loved it and will try and remember to see more color and help those around me that live in gloom to see the good in all things.

THURSDAY THUNKS

Got your taxes done? Ya, it's always a hassle tho. It should be easy with being a retiree you'd think.

What do batteries run on? Negative and positive chemical energies. duh! [WAIT...Diosa said they don't have legs so can't run...I like that much better. Now, why didn't I think of that?!!!]

What do chickens think we taste like? I didn't know chickens even thunk, let alone come to conclusions. You tell me!!!

What do they call a French kiss in France? Langue dans la bouche -literally

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons? You got me...I've oftentimes wondered the same thing.

How many times is it appropriate to say "What?" before you just nod and smile because you still didn't hear or understand a word they said? Ask them to sign it OR get closer and read lips. It's a simple process.

I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello? Darn it!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and goes to voice mail. What did you do after I didn't answer? Drop the phone and run away? Ha...if there is no caller ID I wouldn't even BE RETURNING a call. I wouldn't bother with it.....Anni equals a phone-a-phobic. Well not phobic, just loathing phones is all.

So Mel Gibson left his girlfriend - think he's finally heard of me? My humble opinion...if you're really all THAT concerned....you BOTH need psychiatric treatment!! Make an appointment...NOW!!!

Why do they call it "getting your dog fixed" if afterwards it doesn't work anymore? "IT" whaddya mean by 'it'?

Happy, Happy, Easter! I decided to go all out for the midday meal for the two of us today. I'm going to prepare all the fixin's!!! Yes indeedy. Gonna have baked Virginia Ham and mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet yams with marshmallow, some freshly made cranberry sauce, green bean salad and tossed salad. With oven baked rolls and a relish dish with celery, olives, pickles, and cheese. For dessert it's going to be homemade pineapple upside down cake with whipped topping.

I hope your day is blessed with peace and tranquility. Here's to the Easter Bunny!! Three cheers! As I told our hostess at Dungaree's Ablaze when I signed up for the Fun Monday, around here, now that our kids are gone and out on their own, birthdays are just another day. I do remember one time quite a while ago, when Bud turned 50 I had a pizza party. I secretly invited all his co-workers and we had reserved three huge tables ---the LONG kind of tables that seat 30 ---Anyway, pizza and beer was the hot item, and there was entertainment. LOL [The big gorilla, on stage with his cronies --I remember what the name of the pizza parlor is, it's not Chucky Cheese, but real similar; SHOWBIZ PIZZA. Anyway, Bud was enjoying himself with all his buddies and having a great time until the Gorilla sang happy birthday to him upon my request; along with jeers and cheers from everyone in the restaurant that night including his co-workers. That was a mistake, BIG mistake. So, from that point on...no birthday celebrations!!! He'll never let me forget what I did to embarrass him. Awwwww, poor man.

But, I wanted to share the two photos I just scanned for this meme - of gifts that were given to our kids when they had the actual BIRTH day. What makes them so special is that the 'sock' monkeys were hand sewn and given to our kids by Bud's Grandmother...Irene's and Erik's GREAT Grandmother. Now, written on the back of these photos has ages...5 for Irene and 2 for Erik. That would be 1974; Great Grandmother was born in 1890 so that would have made her nearing 85! She lived to be 106. And to this day, dear ol' Hootin' Anni, still has in her possession the TWO sock monkeys!!

And on another note about monkeys. Our son, Erik, loved to build things with tinker toys and legos. He'd sit in front of the TV at night while it was on, and really be concentrating on what he was building. And all the time we thought he wasn't paying any attention to the program itself. Until one night we stood corrected....National Geographic was always something we watched while the kids were still up; awake. And we happened to be watching a special on wild animals. The narrator spoke of their inbred instincts. All of a sudden, just out of the blue, this little boy of ours said:
"I know what stinks. Monkey stink...right Bamammas?"

I so wanted to laugh outloud, but withheld my laughter....he was so serious!!

This week the prompt is "Line". Now y'all know I like movies. It's almost an obsession. If there aren't any good movies listed being aired on TV, I'm lost. I panic. No, not really, but I will slip in a DVD or even a VHS once in a while [I'm considered the lazy ones who don't like to stop the movie when done, and have to rewind it, so mostly it's DVDs in our house. LOL]
