§ Wintry Winds Blow...

1]
Anni to Bud: "The sea is a bit rough today, huh?"
Bud in response: "Ha...you don't know what rough seas are!"
Anni: "What do you mean by that?" [knowing all too well, Bud will share some Navy story]
Bud: "I've been on deck of a ship where the storms were so fierce, I had to look UP to see the wave!"
Anni: :silently thinking to herself: Scary!!
Bud: "My Ship was in the wave trough...the wave high above!"  "It was always rough up in the North Sea".
Anni: "Kinda like the movie, Perfect Storm then, right?"
Bud: "I guess."

Then, silence as we watched the waves crashing in along the jetty!! There was no chance I could go walking along there this day!!!!  I'd been washed off into the rolling waves never to be seen again!  It was that rough and the current came crashing in along the jetty with great velocity and temperament.  The winds were fierce and the air was icy, wintry, cold. For a few days now, small craft warnings were in affect.  Too dangerous to be out on water in small boats.  The Coast Guard on alert!   But, donning my fleece lined jacket for now, I had to get out of the car and get some photos since we parked on the beach in hopes of catching some shore bird activity...while Bud sat in the car and used his birding binoculars to view the cargo ships way out beyond the port channel waiting their turn to be piloted into the channel and guided to port.  If you don't know the way of port activities and protocol...a pilot is put aboard to steer clear the huge ships that come into port...they take over the ship's captain position going through the Channel...the pilots know the channel's 'in's and out's' all too well and avoid catastrophic accidents otherwise. It was a dark and stormy day...some times....for a while the sky was black and ominous, and minutes later as the weather patterns coursed overhead, the clouds would thin out and the sun would be partially filtered, hence, at times, a lighter sky. The morning was eerie, nearly apocalyptic at times ...and beautiful. [Did I mention cold?]

2]
After arriving back home, and by midday, the weather changed somewhat. The cloud cover cleared out, the sky was blue again. The temperature it warmed up and for those 'buried in snow'...we have green grass that needs to be mowed. LOL Later, near sunset, the clouds returned and by nightfall the colder air returned. We had warming soup and salad for dinner. I had a 3# bag of apples in the 'fridge that has been there way too long, so I made pie for dessert.

3]
I had a surprise in the mail when we got back to town!! My dear man gave me the bubble wrap envelope, and inside, it contained a pair of Denver Bronco stud [did I just type that?] earrings. How sweet!! For years I've wanted a pair of Bronco earrings but only found the French Hook, dangle style, in stores. Around here in Texas, it's MOST difficult to find anything that ISN'T Longhorns, Cowboys, Spurs, or Texans jewelry. Guess he ordered them online. I'll take 'em.

4]
Erik [our son] texted me the other day that he is thinking of spending some time with us during Spring Break when he doesn't have to teach class at the university. If so, I'll enjoy his company....but it's coming all too quickly...March will soon be here.

5]
....piece of homemade, from scratch [even the crust], warm, apple pie with your hot drink? I'm sharin'!!!

§ ...those were the days

yep, the days of photos with no particular theme going...from flower blossoms to a 12' long critter...just snappin' away [me, with photos, not the critter!  Altho it's known to snap.]

...Instead of "Christmas" cactus, mine always tend to bloom long after Christmas. Go Figure. But, one is blooming as it's placed on the south window sill!! Early in the morning, the bud showed signs of opening wide...by midday it was in full bloom...

...If you live in the United States, did you know [or do you know] that each state has symbols? Like state bird, flower, flag, gem, etc. But, each state in USA also has a state rock?!! Texas's state rock is the Petrified Palm Wood. According to Wikipedia, our state's palmwood - Palmoxylon (Petrified palmwood) - is from the Oligocene period dating some 23 to 33 million years ago. During this period, the continents continued to drift toward their present positions. When Bud and I are out in our yard, working on some of the mundane chores such as weeding, I take time to stop and smell the roses pick up and look at the landscape rocks along the house's foundation between the foundation and lawn. There, I find several pieces of petrified palmwood!!!

...Have you ever heard of witch balls? A witch ball is a hollow sphere of plain or stained glass hung in cottage windows in 18th century England to ward off evil spirits, spells or ill fortune. The witch ball originated among cultures where witches were considered a blessing and these witches would usually "enchant" the balls to enhance their potency against evils. Later, they were often posted on top of a vase for a decorative effect -such as garden gazing balls of today!! As y'all know by now, I love witches. Especially in doll form. But I DO HAVE a witch ball also. I think I have shared this before, but the photo remains in my folder so it may be a repost from long ago...

...'Long about mid September, when the two of us were walking along an Audubon Trail, I came upon this wildflower. It was quite tall in the prairie grasses, and such a pretty lavender shade of blossom. It kinda resembles a hairy [or hoary] vervain, but lacks the silvery large leaves near the base. So, I really don't know what species it is. Still, attractive...

...the Day after Christmas we spotted this sunning in the grasses on the peninsula. I set the camera on panoramic to get its full length; my guesstimation is it's about 12 to 14 feet long...

§ Whether it Weathers...Birds of a Feather

Watching the sky for weather patterns, birds, and deep blue!!

1] Having my blog[s] on Blogger is a challenge a lot of times. Just the other day I uploaded some images for a post and decided to try the option of 'adding a caption'. I thought..."Cool! Now I don't have to add captions below the image in a paintshop pro frame any more!" "That'll save me a lot of time." I imagined that it was a good thing! Until I uploaded, added the caption, and published the post. I then clicked on the images to view them enlarged as in the nifty Lightbox feature Blogger has implemented. WRONG! Once the caption feature is done, the caption disappears in Lightbox!! With a three column blog template, the images must be quite small to fit into the post properly! Right? Right!! So the enlarging Lightbox is a must for those who visit and want to see the full view by clicking on them. What's the purpose of enabling the enlargement feature and adding the caption if only one works!?!!

Making use of Blogger's caption option [enlarging won't work with the caption visible!]:

Hibiscus Blossom

DISABLING CAPTIONS [Lightbox enlargement works the very same as with the caption.  Just a waste of time then most likely!!]

...and to add the cherry on top of it all, the caption option really messes with the alignment of the text afterward also!! You have to continue to hit the 'enter' key on your keyboard to have the remaining text of your post to be UNDER the captioned image. Otherwise the alignment of the text is half way down the captioned image on the right, left or centered below the image just uploaded. No fun, no fun at all. At least I HAVEN'T figured how to adjust to have it work properly. And knowing how Blogger works it's own magic, there isn't a fix. Except to accept the extra work involved, and no Lightbox feature, or forget the captioning all together under the Blogger admin.  I bet that all didn't make much sense.  rofl

2] My weather app on my smartphone has been going berserk for the last couple of days with weather warnings!! One day this week, we had a near 80° high [F] ---Yesterday it was chilly but a beautiful, mild winter day with the high of mid 60° range. But the whole scenario is about to change. Today, the temp will again be 60° before midday. Then, the bottom is gonna drop out!! The temperature is going to plummet, then the winds will pick up to gusts of nearly 40MPH...that means the windchill will be in the high 20's!! Predicted anyway. By night fall, the rains will come in form of sleet [with windchill factors of temps dropping in the low to mid teens!!] --- warnings of driving hazards are in affect. Ice accumulating on the highways!! Driving in Colorado, the snowpacked, icy roads are a given and y'all grow accustomed to how to drive on slick streets. Down here, the drivers see speed limits of 65MPH, and that's what they're gonna drive; no matter the road conditions!! Texas drivers, at least in my experience, are not icy-road knowledgeable!! They're discourteous to begin with on NORMAL roads!! I look for lots of accidents before this clears out late Friday. Hopefully none fatal.

3] While the days have been mild this week, Bud and I have been dabbling at getting a low spot in our yard on the side of the garage raised up and leveled so we can have some sod put there eventually. Even when we soak the foundation for the crazy soil in Texas...we always end up with a puddle there. Makes for a muddy mess at the backyard gate. But yesterday, we took a few hours off to relax our sore muscles. Ended up walking at Pollywog Ponds - it's a beautiful, quiet area outside of town. We then drove over to Calallen, Texas to Bazemore Park and had lunch at one of the Subway delis after seeing very little bird activity.

4] At home, we decided to sit at the larger computer monitor and watch SLEEPY HOLLOW's season two hour season finale! Whoa...what a cliffhanger!!! [fox tv]

5] Oftentimes these days when outdoors walking, and I spy a bird, I get fixated on that bird's actions and forget about all the other birds flitting 'round. And this Golden Fronted Woodpecker [quite prevalent to our area in South Texas] was the main attraction for a while as it foraged for the dried berries on the tree. Upright, sideways and upside down, it kept its balance all along!

§ ...chitchat, prattle, small talk

I've been trying to keep myself busy and trying not to go stir crazy by being cooped up in the house the past few days. I know it's my fault in some ways...I could've ventured outdoors and walked in the cold winds, and damp air...without seeing any sun for days. But I just couldn't get my mojo in gear any way, shape, or form. And besides, I'm still nursing the cough I've had for weeks!!!  Wednesday it was warming up, but again no venturing outdoors 'cause it was a drizzly rainy kinda day. If I get too wet, I begin to melt. I don't want that. So, again, I stayed indoors like a hermit or a hibernating bear. But today, Thursday and the next day...it is promising to be much warmer AND dryer!! Altho, that remains to be seen since it's spitting rain right now at around 5 a.m.

So, let's see what have I done to entertain myself? 1] Reading Petra's Legacy some, 2] baking -- I had some day old french bread that I whipped into bread pudding. We topped it off with vanilla yogurt after we warmed it in the microwave. 3] Bud and I bought a new card game to wile away the hours, 5 Crowns. Have you ever heard of this game? We didn't. But heck, it was something new. We usually spend some winter days playing scrabble or Gin Rummy. This 5 crowns is a fast game, and I'm winning on the average of 5 out of 6 games against Bud. Can't be all that bad, now, can it? 4] I did another pencil sketch after watching the DVD of the Broadway's CATS. I love that program. Grizella I can associate with in so many ways..."I was beautiful then..." in my memories. But, in all honesty, I like the character Jemima the best. She IS beautiful in looks AND in voice. So, after watching the video I drew Jemima from my own memory!!! That was the beginning of the week that I finally finished it. Now it's near the ending of the week, and 5] I began another sketch. This sketch I've been wanting to do for almost two decades. I begged my daughter, Irene, to send me a photo of my first grandson while they were staying at Clint's [grandson] great grandmother's house. There is a long story to his life; born with Down Syndrome, open heart surgery at the age of 5 months, and all specialists and pediatricians and cardiologists told Irene and Dan that Clint would probably not live to see his sixth year. Well, miracles do happen and he is our miracle child...he will be 25 this May. I truly, TRULY think he has some special connection with his Maker. Prayers are answered.

As I type this post out for publishing, I am hoping we can go somewhere, do something, watch for birds, travel around the islands and maybe go to lunch and enjoy being away from the four walls we call home. It seems that it's been way too long. I know we were out Sunday morning, but it was cut short with the storm that moved in. --- I can hardly wait to get out in the yard and get my flowers worked over, trimmed, and blooming again. Did I mention how dreary it's been? We have even talked about moving to Hawai'i!! LOL

Okay, so as I mentioned, the sketch. Of Jemima from Broadway's CATS. Here she is from beginning to completion...

Then, to round out the day's post I thought I'd share some funnies for laughs of current events [Colorado's legalizing mara-gee-wienie -- I've been seeing the word of the day/year on a lot of blogs, so I decided to show you MY word choice...Marageewienie, aka GRASS, reefer, marijuana. I'd prefer the wienie!! Kinda synonymous to Rocky Mountain HIGH] and weather. Laughter afterall, is good, yes? These images are NOT mine, I claim no possession of them in my name...they are from emails I've received from family and friends and the copyrights do not belong to me...

...hoping to be outdoors for most of the day after sunrise, I bid you happy day!!!

§ ....Raking in the Chips

  • A long, long, long, LONG time ago, as Bud and I made a habit of staying up to watch Johnny Carson's Late Night Show, we so often bring up the subject of our favorite segments. Mine are usually dealing with Mr. Carson and all the animals [wild and tame] that were brought on stage with him. Many-a-times when we are eating lunch or a light dinner of sandwiches and chips, we discuss the 'potato chip lady'. Do any of you remember that one particular program? A woman collected potato chips of all things. In all different shapes. And she had them named too. I think my most favorite one she had shown was the one shaped like Bob Hope, and it really LOOKED like Bob Hope! [you can see the chip and others in her collection from this video link]. I had a most difficult time finding this since so many were not available on You Tube any more. Because of copyright issues, and I can't understand why this one actually showed up, but to not infringe on a copyright I only share the link.
  • Anyway, the other night I had made a sliced ham and provolone cheese sandwich on hard bolillo bread [a crusty french individual sized [small ] loaf of bread....mighty delicious. Along with the sandwich I served our favorite chips. Now these chips are a store brand product. I swear, sometimes the store brands are much better and tastier than national brands. And these chips are one such item!! We're obviously not the only ones who really like 'em either...throughout Corpus Christi and surrounding areas there are literally hundreds of H*E*B stores, from small neighborhood grocers to the giant super center stores. Seems no matter which corner store we frequent, those "Loaded Baked Potato" Chips areas on the shelves are always empty. Several times I've had to ask a shelf-stocker to go back in the warehouse area and bring out MORE so I can buy them. They're baked potato, sour cream and cheese chips...sprinkled lightly with dried chopped chives. Yum!!
We were eating in the living room, watching the movie with Daniel Day Lewis's "The Last of the Mohicans", and I was separating the big chips on my plate from the tiny broken ones and eating the broken ones first; saving the bigger, better, ones for last. LOL When through the pile of chips, I pull out one that truly stopped me with my inane ritual!! And of course I thought of the Potato Chip Lady right away.
By the way, a little preamble to my conclusion of this ditty... I've been known to pick up rocks or a piece of broken glass on the beach, or seeds...you name it, that closely resemble the heart shape!! [My favorite heart shaped seed is the Sea Heart] - Right in the dead center of this chip, there was an open heart shape. Nearly perfect. Needless to say, I've saved it. And I told Bud that we should somehow put it in a shadow box with a glass cover for protection. Really? How often does this happening come along? Like the potato chip lady, I too have named mine...it's lovingly dubbed Myrtle Young's Heart. Or maybe I could list it on Ebay?!! rofl
Are you ready to see my find? Wanna see it, do'ya? Say purdy please!!...........

Okay, you talked me into it.

  • As y'all know, a quilt project is under way at Hootin' Anni's abode!! I now have all the blocks sewn together [it's an eclectic mixture of sizes and shapes -square AND rectangle]...the batting is in place, the back panel is sewn on and it's quilted up to the rough edges around the entire quilt. Now this week, I started sewing the binding together after watching an online video on the 'how to'. After I pressed the seams open, I had a helper. One who has been watchin' my every move for this particular segment in quilting. Guess you could now call her "Bounty" 'Cause she was my 'quilter picker-upper'. I'm a little off the rocker today folks...don't mind me. This quilting is for more skilled ones; more so than I am. Other than bearing two kids, this is the most tiring and tedious thing I've done in a long time. :::snort::: The picture of my helper is quite blurred and dark, I was walking back to the sewing machine and Tahoe was helping me carry the strip of binding!! And this new cellphone doesn't take very clear pictures. Of course I have yet to work on the phone's preferences, maybe someday I can make adjustments. Ironic that this is a Halloween quilt and I have a black cat helping. Don't you think? ;o)

  • Been watching a couple of storms brewing and could possibly be heading toward the Gulf of Mexico. At least the one that originated just off the coast of Venzuela this week. The other one is still out in the Atlantic just off the coast of West Africa, well today it seems that it will change a more northerly direction instead of hitting the USA. But, for us in Texas and the Hurricane Alley-ways, they both deemed watchable!! It's been all too quiet out there since the 2013 season began. August, September, October are historically the most active of the 6 month season. Here they come!

  • I like redecorating here on my blog. I try to use something that pertains to my likes mostly. Or the area where I live. This template set I used once before and found it in my graphics stash folder, and revamped it a bit and added the Egret header. It seems no matter how many colors I use, I always go back to the white background. I think white is best for all. It's easier on the eyes when you read a lot of blogs. Soft colors are best in my opinion. And white overall is even better.

  • Tired of all the corrupt government and the raising of taxes. I have a cute clip that Erik sent me through email...

    no infringement intended

  • I began sketching a new pencil work...another bird. Haven't finished it yet to share it with anyone. I'm having a difficult time getting its feet to look right. Bird feet have always been a challenge for me. This time, if I ever get it finished, it's of a jay found in Texas.

  • And lastly for this week's fragmented thoughts, with the 'tax' comic strip above, I was reminded of this...I was pinning some of my quilt, preparing to sew, at the dining room table. In the afternoon, this room has the best light coming in the window. Anyway, I spotted from my chair, looking out the window, a critter that shows up daily for its lunch!! Of course, there is just absolutely no way to keep squirrels from feeders. You either let them feed along with the original intended birds of the 'hood, or don't put out seed!! But, this reminded me of an article I read about an elderly couple that was ordered to court because of one of their bird feeders in their yard!! I couldn't believe my eyes and just how cruel people [and next door neighbors] are getting these days. They face a fine, and what boggles my mind is the waste of time and taxpayers money to have this instance appear before a judge....'cause of a bird feeder?!!!...READ MORE
...and speaking of birds...LOOK, up in the sky [it's not Superman------]

  • § Quilting, and drawing, and government..oh my!!

  • Watched a video this week that I wanted to see in the theater a long time ago but never did. "Take the Lead" starring Antonio Banderas. According to the beginning credits, this was based on a true story. About kids, troubled kids, who became a goal of sorts for the dance teacher [Banderas] to help them out by teaching them to dance. It was a typical movie; very predictable, but still a good family movie. It is more about the kids of "Harlem" in NYC, but the story, the story is also about the teacher...a dance instructor. Wikipedia has this:
Pierre Dulaine (born 23 April 1944)[1] is a well-known ballroom dancer and dance instructor. He invented the Dulaine method of teaching dance. He also developed Dancing Classrooms, a social development program for 5th grade children that uses ballroom dancing as a vehicle to change the lives of the children and their families. Notably, his early works with children was fictionalized in the film Take the Lead, starring Antonio Banderas as Pierre Dulaine.
Pierre Dulaine being the teacher of course. The DVD was found in the $5 bin at Walmart. It'll be one we trade in, but it was worth watching a one time.
  • It went like this...:::crash:::
"Oh man-n-n-n!" "It's probably busted." "Yep! I need a new one...."
    Bud inquires: "What happened now?"
"The blender just fell onto the floor after I washed it by hand!!" "The base of the pitcher shattered...look at all the pieces on the floor."
As Bud helps pick up the shards [even flew across the room near the garage door into the litter box]...smirking, he asks: "How did that happen?"
    "It just fell!"
"You should watch more carefully what you're doing Anni."

After the mess was cleaned up, Bud started to clean his coffee pot carafe since there was hot soapy water in the sink from my cleaning chore.

    :::bang:::

    "Dammit"
I come back into the kitchen, "What happened now?"
"I hit the sink rim with the glass pot, and it cracked."
In disbelief, I thought right away, "Irish Luck", but I think I was quoted saying "You should watch more carefully what you're doing..."

We had to make a trip to buy a new coffee pot and a new food blender before the next day's breakfast hour!!
  • Bought the batting for my quilt project. Pieced together a back side for the quilt. I added a hand cut witch's hat on the back quilt piece. On the panel with the little girl witch that instigated this whole project were some extras on the side of the panel...some Jack o Lanterns, bats, and a crooked, twisted witch's hat....I cut out the witch hat, one of the jack-o-lanterns, and pinned it on my back panel and 'appliqued' it with the machine in orange. All the front blocks are sewn, the batting is on the floor all stretched out...will begin the sewing after a few days' quilting hiatus. I find it better, if I take a day or two away, the project doesn't seem so demanding. Besides, working on the floor getting this all together takes a toll on the back muscles I forgot I had!!
  • During the days away from working on the quilt, I finished another bird sketch that I started a couple weeks ago after I drew the woodpecker. This time it's an American Redstart. I remember the first time I saw one in the wild. I was walking around the Audubon Society's preserved Oak Motte on the island near Packery Channel, and I saw this black and orange small bird fly from the outer branches deep into the motte. It never came back out. I didn't know what bird species it was as I had never seen the likes of it before!! For longer than a year's time I never saw one, again, 'til this past Spring!! I got several photos of the male [they're the black and orange ones] along with his mate...she is grey and yellow! Anyway, I wanted to draw one. They are beautiful. Of the warbler family I believe, and very flitty, busy, and one of the most difficult birds to photograph; never staying still long enough to get a proper focus on the camera. The male is so very handsome with its dark black plumage on its backside with bright red-orange in its tail feathers and partial breast...while the belly is near a pure white. When courting, the male and female fan out their remarkably beautiful tail feathers to display their breeding colors. Here is a link to the Ornithology website of bird IDs. And, here is my completed sketch [obviously I added a bit of red-orange colored pencil to my sketch this time 'round to match some of its coloration] ...

  • Speaking of witches-------I've been waiting on pins and needles all summer, actually an entire year from last August...waiting for August to arrive at Tuesday Morning! Each year, this store, after putting the Spring and Summer goodies on an unbelievable mark-down, make room for their Autumn, Winter [Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas] items to go up on their shelves. Yes, I know...some of you think it's way too early for this. I don't! And I'm one of those that shows up at the store front waiting patiently for the opening hour. [well, I'm not that much of a nut-case, but awfully close] Anyway, I ended up at the store early one morning as it's across the street from a Walmart [and yes, Shelly, these both are located in the Staples Street construction area! LOL] where I had to get some cat litter. I walked in and saw no Autumn stuff...I was in shock...nothing in the front of the store that even pertained to Fall or Halloween!! Ack!!! But, as I turned the corner to the aisle they usually display them, the witches called my name!!! "Anni!! So glad to see you again." I bought four. I tellya, last year we went in the middle of August and the witches were either sold out, or not much to choose from: The early bird........... I got pictures of my quad witch group, but I'll refrain from postin' them so soon.
  • Any baseball fans out there? What do you think of the NYY's fiasco with Alex Rodriguez? All I know is, the Yankees really suck this year!! What happened? They really should just kick A-Rod and his ultra-ego out of baseball for life and get on with playing ball!!!
  • By the way, for more than just a few months, I've been following the civil rights movement of our government/president -our American right to bear arms for protection of our property and lives...and I hafta admit...I'm all for this:

The national movement called "Come and Take it America".

Those who agree with taking our gun rights away should remember:
    1. Guns set us free from the English Monarchy [Revolutionary War}
    2. The war of 1812, and the Spanish American War
    3. Guns set Texas free from Mexico...[The Alamo]
    4. Guns freed slaves from bondage
    5. Guns set us free from: The threat of Hitler, Japan, Middle East, etc. etc.
    6. The use of a gun [locally] protected a young boy from being shot by intruders that murdered his parents in a prominent neighborhood...not just the poor where violence is a given and oftentimes wrong. But this is not about violence and gun violence...it's about the freedom to bear guns, not to have that right taken away because of what happened in Colorado, Texas, Arizona, California or any given area of America...it's about the right to carry a weapon for protection.
    7. I admit, I'm scared to death of all the wrongs done with guns in the hands of some...The shootings in Houston and the colleges and universities just recently where my son teaches political science...a subject that could easily instigate an act of violence and random shootings. But, my son is a proud American, as am I, and our fore-fathers gave us this right to protect ourselves * in other words the 2nd amendment adopted in the 1700s is all about this "...a right, supporting the natural rights of self-defense, resistance to oppression, and the civic duty to act in concert in defense of the state..."
  • Taking away the right to bear arms/owning guns is NOT going to stop mass killings!! Look what happened with airplanes...9/11...is an airplane now considered a weapon then? And if I may, for those of us that know killing is wrong, I ask: What about all the killing by the hand of God? i.e., In Genesis 19:28 [turning Lot's wife into a pillar of salt] - the entire city of Sodom and Gomorrah in the book of Genesis - then there is, by the hand of God and his fire, hundreds of people burned [Numbers 16:35]- oh and flooding; killing many people AND animals ---to me, even with the commandment thou shall not kill ---seems a bit "do as I say not as I do". Murder and mayhem occurs in history [even the Good Book], fiction and non-fiction...it's a fact of life, and part of human nature---and it's not ALWAYS from the actions and repercussions from a gun.
  • Now, to abate the debatable here from my bill of rights fragment, I wanted to leave you on a much more fun frag.... Scenes from Goose Island near Capano Bay, in South Texas...the beautiful sky and the 'white hot' sunshine of summer, the sea coast, the shadows, the cooler temps of a shaded pathway and park bench...
