§ Anni's HodgePodge...

Once again, since I've been staying home for the most part to stay out of the heat and getting caught in heavy rainstorms most mornings recently, I have made do with playing on the phone [a jigsaw puzzle app], watering plants on the patio, reading, and drawing some. The other day when I was out checking my flower crops, I noticed the incredible clouds that were storm clouds brewing...the higher up in the sky they go, the more moisture will fall...somewhere! I had my cellphone in my pocket so I snapped some photos. Also, once again, I took photos of some flowers blooming in the yard [and bushes]. When I got back indoors I thought I'd attempt getting a very short video of the newest 'gift' I bought for our daughter, Irene. She collects pigs [she has a hutch in her home filled with pigs, pigs, pigs!] This one I couldn't resist. In fact, I've been tempted to keep it for myself...but, I won't. I have enough collections going as it is!! Need to get it to UPS so they can package it and ship it to her!! In the meantime...this is just a few seconds long:

here is a still in case the video doesn't load and 'bobble'...

The morning sky:

Recently, after I uploaded and installed a new puzzle app on my phone...when it starts to get too hot outdoors, I come in to cool down and I usually end up reading my book [a new one I found on Olivia de Havilland -Melanie on Gone With the Wind from 1939] She recently passed away at the age of 104. Speaking of collections, I have tried to find over the last 30 years or so, biographies on all the main characters from that movie...I have Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Hattie McDaniels, and have been searching for a couple of good ones...one on Olivia and another on Leslie Howard [Ashley]. I finally found Olivia's Biography-Autobiography published just after her death. It's a good book. Full of Hollywood gossip and tidbits of her early acting career at the age of 16.
Okay, where was I? Oh ya, puzzles. Our puzzle table was torn down and stored for when Erik came to Corpus in May. We probably won't put it back up in the library until all our yard work is done. So, with this app I can get my 'puzzle fix' and I can choose the grade of difficulty. I choose 275 pieces. It's a VERY GOOD app. Many, MANY free puzzles to choose. Altho, it eats up a lot of battery! Maybe 3 to 4 puzzles before the phone's battery is near exhausted. Here are screenshots from the phone's app...

Same ol' flowers, different days from the last time I posted:

To close off for the day, I have to mention that we decided to do some electrical work ourselves. Luckily Bud did this kinda stuff in the Navy aboard ship. But, that was 60 some years ago!! Give or take a few years. A lot has changed. Arthritic hands and knees, eyesight not so good, etc. etc. But, we conquered the job and saved ourselves over $300. We [mostly Bud] tore our fluorescent kitchen light apart and replaced the ballast behind the bulb casing!!! An hour's job for a professional electrician, it took us 3 hours of up and down the ladder, trips to Lowes in the rainstorms, sore neck breaks often...etc. etc. But, it's now done. I haven't put the light fixture's cover back on yet as I need to get back to Lowes for a new light tube. One's very weak and needs replaced before I put the cover up...why put it all together when another job will come all too quickly!!

§ A Sepia Rainbow...

'Tis early morning, and I type this out to share with you. It's a bit eclectic; something I choose to do oftentimes when I need to get things off my thought-wave and onto paper so to speak. I'll start with a bit of humor. Some of you may have seen this before but it's worth repeating...

....something I should consider doing!!

Sunday morning, on my drive home after my walk in the park, I pulled over, off the road, and walked into the field to get photos. Looks to me, with all the crops around town and outside the limits, that it's gonna be a bumper crop this year [both the cotton and sorghum]!!! Now, question is, will the economy of our country do the farmers any good with selling this to the right bidder? Anyway, the cotton fields are lush, thick, and green. The blossoms so far are heavy and ripe...

The other day when I posted my share of pencil sketches, most of you mentioned in the comments that the one of Clint by the mirror, brushing his hair, was your favorite [as is mine]. Well, skimming through my photo folders, I came upon the copy of the original that Irene sent me so I could sketch it at the time. Here is the color photo [an aged, very faded copy]. I thought y'all might like seeing what I used to achieve the sketch.  When I take time to stop and view either the photo or my drawing, I feel the bittersweet tears of memories of those scary days when we nearly lost him...

...and then, today I leave you with the thought that has been running thru my mind these past weeks of global turmoil.  First, the statues being torn down and demolished....they are our heritage and history, people, you can't erase history!  Second, the Churchill statue in London, being defaced with graffiti...the word "Racist".  I'm sad because of this, the unrest...if only the younger generation would realize if it weren't for Winston Churchill, England would be a fascist country today, if not for his strength and determination to beat Hitler!  Lost lives, true, but for freedom...the price tho heavy, was necessary.  Oh, and all the websites removing anything relating to Gone With the Wind...it's fiction dear friends!!  I can't help but ask myself  "What is wrong with people?"  One online friend, as we discussed this about Churchill, Phil [England] reminded me that "Anni, the difference is, you and I have lived through the University of Life, but the young ones have yet a lot to learn".  Indeed.  Now, my vision of a rainbow and racial colors of the todays and those of the tomorrows...

Take a Rainbow

Take a rainbow
Make it sepia tone...
The colors blend
None standing alone!
The browns, whites, yellows and other hues
meld into a simple beauty of mix...
The rainbow still lives on, arching to the sky.
You can see the glory of it all if you so choose.
It reaches across the land for people passing by.
Colors we cannot change, nor want to fix.
Take the rainbow and...
And see the sepia tone...
Colors that blend
Together, none standing alone!!!

§ Did you ever think of marrying just for fun?

...Marriage, fun? Fiddle-dee-dee. Fun for men you mean.

(blog title & "fiddle dee dee" response are from movie GWTW -title is Rhett- response is Scarlet)

Clark Gable -aka Rhett Butler

Vivien Leigh -aka Scarlet O'hara

Of all the gowns and dresses that Scarlet wore in the movie, the scarlet red is/was my favorite.

§ Green Kitty Kats and Tonto...

1] Stopping in our city's World Market [an import store], I was looking for new Easter Egg Cups [ya, I know it's early...but early is the time to find the new ones for the year - before they're picked over. And since Hobby Lobby has put them out on their shelves, I thought I'd go into World Market.] Well, they didn't have anything pertaining to Easter yet...that's okay. What they did have stocked on the shelves was  Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day items. I spied their imported German Reisling Wine Bottles that are in the shape of cats! You know me and cats. Gotta love 'em. I picked up a GREEN cat for March. As I purchased that one, the cashier told me they had put out the red glass cat wine bottle for Valentine's just that week. One bottle is enough. But if the wine is good...for the price...I'll probably go back and purchase the red cat. When they're empty, they'll make cute decor for the holidays.

2] Staying indoors lately 'cause of the nasty cold outdoors, Bud and I purchased two DVDs to watch. The Lone Ranger and Captain Phillips - Respectively, I liked 'em both. The cute story of the Lone Ranger - movie critics practically condemned this flick...for reasons I can't understand...of course it helps to have grown up in the "Lone Ranger" era I imagine. To me it's a combination of Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid, Little Big Man, and of course TV's Lone Ranger. Then the grueling, sit on the edge of your seat Captain Phillips which is so intense after about the first 20 minutes until the end. Captain Phillips is played by Tom Hanks. Both the movie and Mr. Hanks are nominated for Academy awards [movie and leading actor]...and may I add, the United States Navy is depicted here in a good, protective, style. The government may be in need of an overhaul in this country, but the Navy Seals are tops. We ended up watching both a 2nd time this week.

3] If you haven't read/heard the news of Shirley Temple's death, consider yourself informed now. I was in total surprise. Seriously, I thought she had died long ago. She was 85. Which instigated my searching to see if the male child star from way long ago, Mickey Rooney, was still alive. He is, age...93.

[4] Speaking of movies and movie stars, I read from cover to cover the recently released TV Guide Magazine on the 75 years of Gone With the Wind. Did you know that Vivien Leigh's pay was $25K? And, Scarlet was nearly in every scene...she even had to get up and make-up done at 2 a.m. to do the "As God as my witness, I'll never go hungry again" at sunrise. So, once again, I did some calculating and out to Google I went. Today's wage, comparing to 1939, is equivalent to ---get this: a little over $410K. Seeing the exorbitant pay some leading actors/actresses get in today's time...even in comparison, Ms. Leigh was way underpaid!! By a great margin! By the way, some real life romance for Valentine's Day, another little tidbit from the magazine--Laurence Olivier proposed to her, and she said 'yes' to his marriage proposal on the plane from Europe to America before beginning the making of the movie. For us GWTW movie buffs, there is a lot of unknown information in this publication.

[5] My last random fragments this week is a bit of Texan Humor. Ready?
[with no copyright infringement intended]

[bonus tidbit] Lo and behold...yesterday, for the first time in weeks the cloud cover broke loose and moved out over our area!!! WE HAD SUNSHINE for the better part of the day. Bud and I drove to Indian Point in Portland, then went into Ingleside along the bay and Aransas Pass...took the ferry over the ship channel into Port Aransas, had lunch at a Mexican restaurant in Port "A" and of course stopped at our favorite birding areas. Sun!!!! Looks like today may be more sunshine too. I'm so ready for it. It can be cold if the weather so chooses, but bring on more blue skies and sunshine!!!!

§ Christmas Treasures for the New Year...

Since I wasn't online or near the computer much [not even close to my smartphone much either which is a good thing!!!] over the holidays, I haven't shared my Christmas Morning with anyone yet. So, I am thrilled to show off my goodies that was under the tree. Besides my secret Santa who shipped me a carved, wooden, Santa about a week before Christmas I was gifted another Santa to add to my collection...another Jim Shore's work. It's 2013's SILENT NIGHT. I love the nativity carved into his Christmas Robe---

next, I opened this adorable Christmas Cup...it's made especially for Santa, but since I don't drink coffee, and everyone knows I'd prefer milk with my Holiday cookies...the cup has a slot under the liquid holder especially for a cookie!!

...another collection I love adding to is, everything Gone With the Wind. This time a small Scarlet figurine in her unforgettable green drapery gown!!

Now, there is a story behind this gift...I wanted to see it in the theater, but we never went. My excuse is...if I can help it now-a-days, I don't like to see movies that'll make me cry when I'm in a theater. Luckily, with technology, I can wait 'til it comes on DVD and play it in the privacy of my own living room --

...and lastly, the gift I asked for from Bud. He's such a sweetie!!! The book about Petra Kenedy, a prominent historical figure of the ranch lands of Texas history. Long ago, I read the book about Alice King [famed King Ranch and small town of Alice, Texas is named after her] by the same two authors. So well written and composed that book was, I was anxious to read this one also. I'm about half way done with reading it, and it's marvelous. A true book that will find a permanent place on my shelf....

§ A 'wordless' 'watery' Fishy Tale....

HODGEPODGE

Here are Joyce's questions for us this week, and my answers...

1. What's the best and worst thing thing about growing older? Best: wisdom and freedom to do what I choose without a time clock.... Worst: Aches and pains showing up where I would've never dreamed of when younger.

2. Autumn arrives this week in the Northern Hemisphere...what one thing do you love most about the fall season?
Leaves rustling along the sidewalks, the smell of fireplace smoke in the air, cooler days and nights, COLORS...which boils down to ONE thing...the CHANGE of SEASONS.

3. Speaking of fall...pumpkin seems to be flavoring everything these days-are you a fan? What's your favorite pumpkin flavored food or beverage? I'm definitely a 'fan' of this:   it's not a 'food item'...but it's flavored by scent, and that would be the pumpkin spice candles!!! My favorite food:  it's the traditional pumpkin pie!!!!!

4. Since we're on the subject of fall...what's the worst fall you've ever taken? Well, long ago, I took a FALL down a side of a mountain....luckily I only broke two fingers. Had to have my wedding rings CUT off because of the intense swelling. Then, I also think that when I FALL in love [with pets mostly but a couple of humans I can think of right now] and have to say goodbye to those that left me behind when they pass on before me....it's a 'fall' I never got over.

5. If you could own a prop from any film what would you choose? Funny you should ask this...just a couple of weeks ago, I was thinking what I'd like to own from the movie set of Gone With the Wind. I think I've narrowed it down to one item and that would be the red dress that Rhett forced Scarlet to wear to Ashley's birthday dinner!!

[image courtesy of Google Images - no infringement intended]

6. What's the most interesting word you've read or learned in the past week? Actually, it's TWO words that come to mind that I USED this week...We were discussing Hitler's Mein Kempf which I'm reading, and I told Bud that his [Hitler's not Bud's] actions are quite similar to what any psychiatrist would label him and that would be "Cognitive Dissonance"....I learned the use of those words tho, years ago, when I worked with a co-op of psychiatric offices and doctors ---which could loosely translate to: tension which comes from holding two conflicting thoughts in the mind at the same time --the man was a total weirdo. Mein Kempf is an autobiography, written by Hitler [Mein Kempf meaning My Battle]....So many times throughout the book, I've read where he says one ideal/idea in one paragraph and then the following paragraph he's contradicting what he previously wrote!! I have found myself so many times, going "Huh?" And then, having to go back and re-read....hence, two interesting words...Cognitive Dissonance [Bud was thrilled with my reference...NOT....let's just say HE had to go look up the meaning; not knowing what I was referring to in my thoughts on this man of evil and historical recognition]. LOL I do know from reading this, I am MORE interested in the people that followed him...what gave them their fascination and awe of this man?!!!!!

7. When was the last time you locked yourself out of your house, car, or office? Was it a big deal? The scenario wasn't a 'lock-out' per sé .... the door from the garage to the kitchen....the latch jammed [it wasn't locked], and the knob would not turn one way or the other...had to jimmy the lock, broke the latch in the process...had to wedge the door closed and drive to Home Depot to buy a whole new mechanism and replace!!! To answer the 2nd part of the question: Was it a big deal? No...my motto these days is "100 years from now, it'll make no difference".

8. Insert your own random thought here. The countdown for NCIS Season #10 is coming to a close....six more days 'til the new season begins!!! From the Cliffhanger of an episode last Spring ---Tuesday night, the first part of a two-parter [from what I understand] will finally be aired on CBS!! Just a couple of days ago, Bud was telling me a few 'spoilers' on McGee [one of the investigators]...and then, I had to go a'searchin' for more....CAN'T wait. The anticipation here in the house of Hootin' Anni's is rampant!!! SPOILERS ONE and spoiler two...

§ Fragmenting my Friday

  • I've been extremely lazy and lacking in any energy this week so far!! I am not used to it. I haven't felt much like doing anything...and that's being online much. I check my emails for the day, and that's about it. I've been way too preoccupied with reading a good book. I want to just sit around, lay around and READ!!! Glance over on my sidebar to see what I'm reading....surprise, it's NOT a novel...it's non-fiction this time; lovin' it.
  • We went birding on the 4th, really early. And then stopped at Wal Mart on the way home. That was the whole excitement for the holiday.
  • Our neighbor asked me if I wanted a little shelf? Me? Not accepting something FREE? I said 'of course'....she handed it over. It has been in her garage for a long time, obviously, it was really dirty and some webs under the shelf...I cleaned it and Bud put it up on the wall in the master bedroom...I placed all my small Gone With The Wind figurines on it...it was like the shelf was meant to hold them. And I must admit, I love the ornate routing that goes with the shape of this small treasure!!
  • Yesterday, after listening to the song I chose for the week on Themesong, and, if you've been following my blog for several years, you know I have a strong 'fixation' with this particular entertainer!! I told Bud: "Too bad he can't live forever and we can all, for generations to come, continue to hear his wonderful voice". Bud agreed. We were lucky enough to see him in concert, live, while living in Tucson. I was just so amazed at the man's musical talents. Anyway, while talking about him, we both wondered if he retired since we haven't heard many of his songs lately. Of course, it would help if we listened to the radio or kept track of his career. LOL As I was reading his short biographical page on wikipedia, about his birth, career, family, marriages and divorces, along with his life threatening health issue of thyroid cancer that would have taken his beautiful voice away from us fans, I actually read the entire page. Speaking of his children, wives and lost marriages... I read a quote of his, near the bottom. It goes this way: "Instead of getting married again, I'm going to find a woman I don't like and just give her a house." Now I'm wishin' that he wouldn't like me at all if we were to meet. Alas, he did remarry in 2007. Coming back to the song I had embedded for the day..."I Am Sailing". It's one of my favorites, and I've oftentimes mentioned I would like that song played with his voice....singing it, at my funeral. It's just a fitting song of a lost life and those left behind and to those we will meet again in another life.
  • And, I realize that embedding an MP3 with autoplay enabled isn't really good blogging protocol, I take the coding off at the beginning of the next day's blogging. If you'd like to hear the song, I Am Sailing, it's here.
  • For all those who crochet, and like making afghans...and like the ripple design, there is a new free pattern for a rippled granny square afghan...it looks attractive and simple to do...LINK
  • ....I promise, I'll get to paying y'all a visit today!!!! I feel embarrassed to admit my lax style this week!!!
  • One more thing that's been on my mind for the last couple of days....there is rumor that Romney will have Condi Rice be his running mate....If she does, I think maybe Romney will have a goodly chance of winning the election!!! After the last four years --------I'm all for it!!!

A couple weeks ago I had mentioned that Bud also gave me another gift being that Valentine's Day and my birthday are so close together in February. Well, I showed you the heart necklace that he went back to get and I said I'd show you the other gift. He had found a pair of water glasses with GWTW theme! I was thrilled.
