§ Inca Dove

Last Saturday I took myself out birding. I had a late start so also took myself out to lunch!! lol

Anyway, driving home on the interstate all kinds of warning lights came on the dash...with engine light flashing along side. I did NOT stop or pull over. I was miles from home and just didn't want to deal with calling and waiting for a tow truck!!! The engine light finally did stop blinking about half way home, and I kept pushing the pedal to the medal...fingers crossed to make it home and safe. Well, my mechanic is not open on Saturdays so I waited 'til Monday to call and set up a time. It's Wednesday and I still don't have my car. David told me over the phone what the analysis for the computer sensors told him and it's in dire need of a tune-up. Thing is parts!!! How long a wait for parts...you know just how the American companies are with stocking things. Time will tell.

I started working on the bathroom. When it rains it pours!! I ran into a glitch [not gonna explain, too many words needed]. But, all in all, the job of work will be a week or more to fix if that soon. Woe is me.

While at the park, I had a great experience, so the day wasn't ALL bad. While I was on the hawk platform I was eyeing the trees and searching the horizon. When what to my wandering eyes should appear? But a minature INCA DOVE at my arm, on the railing. I quickly switched the camera mode to video and took a short film of the cuteness.

The white to the left edge of the video is MY SLEEVE. Have the volume up, the dove talks to us before flying off]!!!!

§ Whizzzzzzin'....

My son texted me this and I really had to laugh. Literally LOL Watch closely!!! It's best to view at full screen. The smaller version may not show the 'treat' clearly enough to enjoy.

I hope it works

And this reminded me of a comment several days ago I read in my blog. Here too, I had a good chuckle from the typo. And, I'm not pointing fingers to anyone. It just hit my funny bone! It was an usual "great photos, etc. Anni" But at the end salutation there was a letter left off...it stated "Have a good wee." I can't find it now. I don't know how far back the comment was.

§ GBH - Short Video

Turn up the sound of birds, while the heron walks silently through the cove.

§ North Beach Video...

I've shown walks along the North Beach in my blog a few times. This time around, I would like sharing a country western songster that made a new, recent, video of his song "A Woman Like That". It was filmed on the very beach of Corpus Christi. And, I think it turned out great.  Tastefully done, showing a bit of the city's culture too.   Here is Johnathan Len's newest released song:

The ship in the background is the USS Lexington, a WWII aircraft carrier that is permanently docked on the shore and now a military museum. This vessel has been used in a few movies and documentaries also.

§ This and That....

If you were here to read my previous post, you remember the close-up photos of the white tailed deer? Well, since the doe was so close to me as I leaned over the hawk watch platform, I pushed the record button and got a couple of videos....

and

Friday morning, I had an appointment at 7 a.m. to get blood drawn for a Lipid panel. As I was driving there to the office, I witnessed a pretty sunrise sky....

After my walk the other day, I did some shopping.  I had a large sack of clothes in the trunk I wanted to donate to Goodwill.  As I dropped that off, at the donation station, I saw what I've been looking for at garage sales, and other thrift shops.  I haven't found anything until now!  What I wanted was a very small wooden table.  Preferably antique.  This little table was at the door where I dropped the clothes off...no pricing was done on the table.  The girl that was writing out a receipt for me for the clothes, I asked her to take the table back to the back room and ask them to price it for me!  Cherry wood, iron, a small drawer....I was figuring $20.  I got it for $3!!!  Nice!  And it fits the room perfectly [the shower room in the master bathroom].  Also near the table, was something I would've liked to have to add to the master bath [the wall frames are of wild animals].  Giraffes and a tiger  and leopard kitten pen and ink sketch.  This one WAS priced and it was $5.  Framed and goes with the bath theme and colors. Got 'em home, cleaned 'em up with Scott's Liquid Gold and Windex on the art glass...Bud hung the picture for me. I was pleased.

Loading it all in the trunk of the car, I then made a stop at the store for lunch and ingredients for making a pasta salad for dinner. These individual salads are a great size for the two of us. And the flavors of the BLT are extraordinary. Taylor Farms Salads.  Beats messing up the kitchen with dishes and utensils too. With my pasta salad for dinner [and enough for left overs] it's a simple recipe that my mom used to make [only she'd add boiled shrimp].

PASTA SALAD

Cooked shell pasta [cooled]
1 large red bell pepper [chopped]
1 large green bell pepper [chhopped]
1 medium white onion [chopped]
2 TBSPS coarse ground peppercorns
1 pound of cubed cheese [mine is a combination cheddar and jalapeno]
1/3 cup yellow mustard
1/2 cup Helmans's real mayonaise.

In a large bowl, mix all above ingredients, coating the pasta and peppers/onion well. Chill for several hours. Serve with toasted garlic bread.  As a light side dish I make a fruit salad with jello.

Note:  I've also added celery, thawed corn, ham at times ... the taste is YOUR choice.

§ Cinco de Mayo Morning Walk...

My morning walk this past weekend was to Oso Bay Wetlands. I admit, it's been quite a while since I've been to that area of town. Since Spring Migration, I usually head to the islands and the hotspots there for the warblers and birds that are hitting those for feed before heading further north. But, I didn't feel like driving the 30 miles, so I stayed near home...once there, I was surprised at all the "new' work that is being done. They're constructing a waterfall at one of the ponds, they've added purple martin condos, they're clearing an area for a new path, and have added flagstone on one of the farthest trails! I was impressed.

The first spot I stopped at was the refreshing 'new' last year, fountain:

I recorded a VERY short video to let you listen to the birdsong and the cascading water. It's a good place on a hot day!!!   The breeze that trickles off the chaparral felt good as the hot sun beat down on me.   And at 7 a.m., it was already pushing eighty degrees.

. . .

I mentioned birdsong....The cardinals were caroling, the mockingbirds were mocking, the thrashers were thrashing out a tune, and the many many painted buntings were poetry in notes!!!! The bunnies were everywhere also. Every nook and cranny it seemed. The first one I spotted was at the entry gate after I parked the car in the lot....like it was greeting me with a "Good Morning Anni". After the 4th or 5th one I stopped taking photos of them. LOL

...Here is some of what I saw:

Oso Bay and new bronze sculptures...

....notice the feather detailing!

By the time 9:30 rolled around it was getting too hot to go further I forgot my bottle of water and the sweat was pouring off me. Time to head back, dry off some and get to the store. On my return to the car I took a few more photos, which will be shared later.

§ If You Build it ... They Will Come

Recording by my cellphone:

After viewing the crocodile behavior for a bit, another activity caught my roving eye. A Common Gallinule [aka Moorhen] was working hard at getting her nest to be 'just right'...

Nesting Facts [courtesy of Cornell Ornithology Lab]
Clutch size:  3-15 eggs
Egg color:  speckled:  gray or buff
Chicks:  born with eyes open

...from wikipedia search:
Name:  Common Gallinule -but- This species was formerly called the Common Moorhen and is closely related to moorhen species in the Old World.  The term [name] is from Latin - Gallinula, roughly speaking  “chicken,” from gallīna “hen”

...Anni's Point of View:
Obviously, being that its name means chicken, the chicken came first!!!!!!   And I'm not yolking!!

§ Wilson's Snipe

This is a Wilson's Snipe. On a normal outing, these birds are so well camouflaged they're not seen, hence they are 'scarce'...but if you look closely in the reed grasses, perhaps you can be lucky enough to spot one moving slightly. This one was busy preening, and the morning was quiet with no other birders around making noise, talking and commenting here and there. It was just the morning sounds, the breeze, the blackbird singing, so I took out my cellphone and clicked 'record'...

§ Is This for REAL?

UNREAL

Trump's son is killing wooly mammoths, sabre tooth tigers, triceratops!!! Do YOU think they have the right to slay these endangered beasts? Watch this: PRICELESS. You just hafta take time to watch this five minute video to get the whole gist of what I am about to share. So, click on the link "priceless"...watch it and then come back here...

I always have to read the insipid comments after such a video. Are people really this lame? They're  [the ones being interviewed here] voting in November? Here are some comments to come up the pipeline:

If you see any of these animals in real life, by all means blow it to hell and back. We've all seen the Jurassic Park movies.

I weep for the species.

- - -Of course, I'm pretty sure this is all a staged production. At least I HOPE SO!! If not, and they ARE this stupid, I'm pretty sure we as a race are doomed!

REAL - REAL ESTATE

My sister texted me a photo of her Sunday Drive thru the Mountains near her home to show me the Aspen trees in all their glory. This is in Ouray County, Colorado. The background 'mountain' is Chimney Peak in the Sawtooth Mountain Range of the San Juan Mountains. The town nearby is Ridgeway. The elevation of this peak is 11,781 feet high. For over 50 years, when I lived in Colorado, we as a family, always took a drive to the high country to view the Aspen in Autumn. It's a spectacle that is definitely a life's pleasure. By the way, the Chimney Peak Ranch is for sale....asking price....$28+ million!!!

REAL ITY

At times I'm a cloud watcher too! I just saw a perfect 'heart' in the clouds, rushed inside to get my cellphone...went back outdoors, and the 'heart' was no longer shaped so. Bummer. But here is a trio I've found. And at the time, I had camera in hand - [the first two] I was looking UP to see hawks fly over in migration form.  [the third photo of the 'witch' flying in the sky was taken back on a birding trek IN JUNE]...

REAL BEAUTY

From a couple of weeks ago, I had mentioned I attended the hawk watch in a suburban park about 25-30 miles from Corpus Christi...Hazel Bazemore Park which hosts the annual watch from mid August thru the end of November. The hawk watch platform is a permanent watch tower, and year 'round you can view the prairie grasses at a far distance, view the nearby ponds and scout the riverbanks, search through the tree tops, watch for javelinas and white tailed deer...all wildlife, plus birds that are residents of South Texas and migratory birds. During the weekend presentations, the Sky King Falconry had exhibits of wild, trained, birds. I mentioned that one bird, a falcon, I couldn't remember which species it was. So, I emailed Sky King Falconry and asked. The gentleman was kind enough to send me an answer. It is a Saker Falcon...known to be a European breed [Not of the new world]. He also added that this Saker's name is Kriger [CRY gurr]. So, after receiving its ID, I will share the photos I took...
