When my father would come home from work, he'd say "Another Day, another dollar". I know that has nothing to do with my post much, but the thought crossed my mind. Well, these days I find myself waking up, looking at our atomic thermometer and saying "Another Day, another hot one!" At 4 a.m. it's 83 degrees. By mid day it's pushing 100, and feels like a million with the humidity. One thing tho, we won't be affected by Tropical Storm Barry....if anything, the moisture in our area will be sucked in by Barry and head toward Louisiana [as I type this on Thursday evening].
So, I know you're anxiously awaiting going with me on my walk through the park along the river...aren't you? No? Well, sorry...what you see is what you get!!!
It was a quiet morning...the air was still with only an occasional slight breeze....the birdsong and distant rush hour traffic could be heard even tho the thick, dense, tree cover should 've kept the sounds along the highway down...on this day the air currents carried the noise into the park. White Tailed deer were seen along the golf course's fairways and in the lowlands where the grass is thick and green....

I saw many many birds along the way...swallows, martins, flycatchers, kingfishers, ducks, mockingbirds, killdeer, cardinals, sparrows, doves, herons, blackbirds, grackles and more. Oftentimes, I stopped to take photos of them....really not doing me any good with 'exercising' my body...stopping way too often this time. As I walked along the park road's detour [from damage with sink holes and heavy rains this past season], they had to close part of the road's alternative route. But, you can walk. As I made my way around the bend in the road, one lone javelina (ha vah LEEN ah) was dining on the breakfast feast...the grass...and he didn't even notice me at first. Now, I must admit, having one out in the open like this one was, I remained still, and hardly breathing. They ARE with a reputation of being mean...lethal in fact, if threatened. I didn't want to deal with this situation, so I waited. And waited...the more I waited, the more I sweat in the heat. Should I step away, backward? Should I take a stand? Should I continue walking the road in hopes of no danger? Aha!!!! It finally noticed me. As it turned to face me, I was ready to run. But, I couldn't outrun a javelina that is in attack mode. (35-40 mph) I raised my camera slowly to get its face...and thankfully, fear took a-hold of it and into the tall grass and outcropping of trees it ran!!! I slowly continued around the bend, walked along the river bank, and continued to keep an eye on the meadows and woods.
...the rest of the walk was uneventful:

If that Javelina came after me I'm not sure I could run to save my life.
ReplyDeleteMe either.
DeleteHello, pretty scenes from your walk. I like the deer and javelina. Enjoy your day, have a happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteNature ... it's a beautiful, tranquil, park...year 'round.
DeleteSuch a pretty deer. And I have never seen a javelina and hope I never will. :-)
ReplyDeleteI've seen some here, but a lot more in the Sonoran Desert near Tucson.
DeleteWhat a story!! I have heard of Javelinas, but we don't have them here. Maybe they are a Texas thing? Looks like a Wild Boar. You were so brave to actually raise the camera and snap!! I think that could have set him off. So happy that the encounter turned out well, and also made for a suspenseful blog post! What I was waiting to hear about today is your proximity to Barry, and that is very good news. Your deer pictures are gorgeous!! I don't know how you captured him in such an artistic manner! Love from Virginia!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly could have triggered the 'attack'. I was lucky.
DeleteBy not moving, probably best decision facing that wild thing. I sure they are speedy.
ReplyDeleteIndeed...on both thoughts...they're fast, and I remained motionless as much as possible.
DeleteI enjoyed my walk with you, especially since I'm sitting in air-conditioned comfort. Thanks for your comments on my blog. In case you should check back,I goofed and by mistake deleted your last comment.I had read it and wanted to hit 'Publish' but hit delete instead.
ReplyDeleteWe've all done that a time or two!!!
DeleteWhat beautiful images, especially of the deer. That sure looks like a wild boar to me, too.
ReplyDeleteThey do resemble them...but, not even related.
DeleteEnjoyed your walk and loved how you "shot" the deer. That is how I prefer them being shot. As for the Javelina, it does look a lot like our wild hogs in Fl, without the tusks. I know the wild hogs are to be feared and glad it didn't come to a run down for you.
ReplyDeleteJavelinas are of a family all their own. Not related to hogs/pigs.
DeleteIt's hot and humid here too but not like down there. Today we had 93% humidity and I decided (in my illustrious wisdom) to hit the trail rather than the gym because I wanted to OUTDOORS.Of course, I didn't see or encounter what you did but I did get attacked by deer fly...:)jp
ReplyDelete...and those bites sting! (And, for me, last forever)
DeleteOh wow! Loved being invited along on your advenutresome walk! So glad you stopped by my blog. Thanks. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Rita.
DeleteOooh - what an experience! You were a good photographer - got that photo while facing danger! Glad he didn't charge you and all turned out well. (And you ended up with an awesome photo!)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he didn't charge at me too. I'm not one to run fast nor am I good at climbing trees!
DeleteSorry, I missed this blog and was alerted to it by your follow-up video of the deer. The drip of a drool from the deer is a shot that I have never seen before. Wow, the javelina story was exciting! Glad he ran away. Good job with the photos here!
ReplyDeleteI was sure relieved it ran FROM me & not toward me. Lol
DeleteIf it came after me, it might show me that I could run after all. I have not tried since my accident, but I don't think I can. Meant to tell you that I enjoyed the videos of the deer in the other post.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure, but if I JAD to run from it, I don't think I'd have made it too far!
