§ North Beach Video...

I've shown walks along the North Beach in my blog a few times. This time around, I would like sharing a country western songster that made a new, recent, video of his song "A Woman Like That". It was filmed on the very beach of Corpus Christi. And, I think it turned out great.  Tastefully done, showing a bit of the city's culture too.   Here is Johnathan Len's newest released song:

The ship in the background is the USS Lexington, a WWII aircraft carrier that is permanently docked on the shore and now a military museum. This vessel has been used in a few movies and documentaries also.

§ I Can Dream of the Old Days...Life Was Beautiful Then...

Do you like ballet? Do you enjoy musicals? Perhaps you enjoy movies that are a bit different than the action figure come-to-life genre that is so popular these days. It was too hot to go out, so I finished my household chores and sat down and watched a movie that I had seen in the theater a few months back, which came out on DVD recently. I love the story CATS which is based on T. S. Eliot's 1939 poetry book Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, with the songs in the Broadway musical consisting of Eliot's verse set to music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This version is enjoyable, tho it didn't do well at the box office, at first [when I saw it at the theater] I was kinda disappointed. Then, afterward, when I got home, the more I thought about it, the more I liked it.   Ballet is more of an 'acquired taste' I guess. I like ballet and even opera if I can understand what's going on... The animated costumes for one. How the art-costume direction got worked on is beyond me, but oh my goodness, to see the cats ears twitching as they sing or talk...their tails moving in such an animated fashion is incredible.   Not to mention their hair-like whiskers. The setting, the songs of course, the celebrities with the likes of Taylor Swift, Ian McKellan, Judi Dench, and Jennifer Hudson. I enjoyed it immensely the 2nd time. And, I will keep this in our repertoire of movies to be watched over and over. And naturally, I cried when the song Memory is sang. It happens every time...I get so emotional when I hear that song.  I couldn't help but grab my phone on the table next to me and snap some photos.  Yes, I know the movie is copyrighted, but like I said, I couldn't help myself...

I broke down and went shopping. I made a special trip to Hobby Lobby for more yarn. While watching CATS, I crocheted six more pansies for my afghan. You see, I wanted more 'warm colors' in my afghan and most yarns I have are cool colors like blues, purples, and greens.  I had made a special trip and while I was waiting the social distance of 6 feet, I saw this cutie and grabbed him off Hobby Lobby's shelf.  I'm a sucker for stuffed animals. I named him Llary the Llama [yes, why not....two "Ls".]  Bud just shakes his head and asks "Where y'gonna put that one?"

Then, I was hungry, and even ventured a bit further against my common sense when I was done with my early Sunday morning walk.  Driving home...I stopped at Denny's and ordered two breakfasts for our brunch. The Ultimate Omelet with hash browns and toast. It was delicious, but would have been better if we coulda dined in. I just can't get myself to do that yet. But, I'm gettin' antsy.  As the lyrics to the song, Memory/Memories...If I could go back to May 2019 when life was beautiful then...I could go out to eat.  As Dorothy, in the Wizard of Oz, says to the Scarecrow:  "I think I'll miss you  most of all".  The "you" in my case is restaurants.

§ Old Rivers....

Before I get to my post for the day, I want to thank all who paid me a visit yesterday [my Rant] and left your comments. I was elated and overwhelmed by the outcome as I was reading each and all points of view. For you taking the time to listen to my rant and in turn point out your thoughts pleased me very much and I want to thank you each. Thank you.

Then, yesterday afternoon at 4 P M, our county judge in our county issued a law "Stay At Home". This is not quite the same as Shelter in Place which would  have many more restrictions. We citizens can get outdoors, walk [keeping the protocol of social distance], doctor appointments, groceries, gas. Also essential workers are exempt of this stay at home ordinance. It is in effect until April 8th unless new updates make it plausible for re-evaluation. As of today, we have 11 cases of the virus...9 of those are travel related.

One more thing. The judge, she's a great speaker! [In my opinion...oval office potential. LOL] Anyway, I want to quote her.  Her spoken words are a simile of the coronavirus....This is probably not verbatim, but close:

A pessimist thinks the wind is horrific and devastating.
The optimist thinks the wind will shift and subside.
A Leader will adjust the sails and make the trip smoother!!

Now, on with my post for the day....
* * * *

This is gonna age me, but so be it.  I used to cry when I heard this song...even as a teenager [c. 1962-'63]! It just touched my heart in a way I can't explain. The song was by a TV favorite from the Real McCoys....Walter Brennan. Erik [our son] was only 2 when Walter Brennan passed away...we were driving home, and on the radio the song played. I bawled out loud this time; for an unknown reason, I still can't explain!! At the end of it; seeing the Old Mule, Rivers, and me in my thoughts as the music played...the radio announcer said "Walter Brennan passed away today, of emphysema". I cried even more.

The song still tugs at my emotional state when I think of it; more so now that I am living in an area where cotton is a crop surrounding us each season. I keep looking for the mule Midnight, Old Rivers, and "me".

How old was I when I first seen old Rivers?
I can't remember when he weren't around
Well, that old fellow did a heap of work
Spent his whole life walkin’ plowed ground

He had a one-room shack not fer from us
And well, we was about as poor as him
He had one old mule he called Midnight
And I'd trailed along after them

He used to plow them rows straight and deep
And I'd come along near behind
A-bustin' up clods with my own bare feet
Old Rivers was a friend of mine

The sun'd get high and that mule would work
And old Rivers finally say, ''Whoa! ''
He'd wipe his brow, lean back on the reins
And talk about a place he was gonna go

He'd say, “One of these days
I'm gonna climb that mountain
Walk up there among them clouds
Where the cotton's high
And the corn's a-growin'
And there ain't no fields to plow”

I got a letter today from the folks back home
And they're all fine, crops is dry
Down near the end my mama said
“Son, you know’d old Rivers died''

Just sittin' here now on this new-plowed earth
Trying to find me a little shade
With the sun beatin’ down across the fields I see
That mule, old Rivers and me

Now, one of these days
I'm gonna climb that mountain
Walk up there among them clouds
Where the cotton's high
And the corn's a-growin'
And there ain't no fields to plow

With the sun beating down across the field I see
That mule, old Rivers and me

listen to song HERE

*-*
Last Saturday, for most of the day, it rained. Staying indoors and not wanting to do any housework, I sketched him. But, as I worked on it off and on for the better part of the day, I came to the conclusion it looks more like an elderly Woody Harrelson than what he's supposed to look like...Walter Brennan.

§ Ready?.....

I see trees of GREEN

RED roses too

I see them bloom for me and for you...

I see skies of BLUE and clouds of WHITE

The bright blessed days

The dark sacred nights

....I see friends shaking hands saying how do you do? They're really saying I LOVE YOU!!!

§ Gonna Spread My Wings 'n' Fly...

...way up high, in the sky!!

I'm sure a lot of you that visit here at Hootin' Anni's have visited Ms. T at The Run*Around*Ranch. Today, I would like to dedicate this post to her!! Each Wednesday, if you haven't already known, Ms. T shares her paddling of Whistlers; she titles her posts Whistler's On Wednesday. And she always shares the perfect personalities of these tree ducks!!! If ever a bird can be charming, these are the epitome of bird charm. They're pretty, comical at times, protective, colorful, quite docile, and nearly silent...unless you're lucky enough to hear them. They don't quack...they actually whistle. And it's a beautiful song.

Okay, so, over the weekend, during breaks from trimming the pyracantha [yes, again...it grows like a weed!!] and a couple of bougainvilleas, and the gardenia...I had my sketch pad out for idle times when Bud was loading the refuse for the city's collection day. Oh, and we also thought we hired someone to do a slab of sidewalk repair but he never showed up...Bud and I did some cement work too this past week. While breaking at times, I began to sketch a bird...yep, you guessed it...the BLACK BELLIED WHISTLING DUCK.

We don't have the privilege of having them as property residents but we do see them occasionally. Mostly, in town on the lake at the park or over on the islands, at Port Aransas.

I'll share my drawing and some of the photos taken from my camera---

Want to spread my wings and fly
Away into the sky
How I dream to be so free
No more sadness no more pain
No more anger no more hate
How I dream to have those wings and fly into the sky

If now, I could grant my wish
I'd wish to have those wings
Those wings just like the birds
That fly up in the air

So high up in the air
With feathers bright and fair
No wealth nor power can make
My heart filled with such joy

Want to spread my wings and fly
Away into the sky
How I dream to be so free
No more sadness no more pain
No more anger no more hate
How I dream to have those wings and fly into the sky

Want to spread my wings and fly
Away into the sky
How I dream to be so free
No more sadness no more pain
No more anger no more hate
How I dream to have those wings and fly into the sky
I'd fly
with those wings....

WINGS TO FLY

§ SING ALONG...

...To the Tune of Itsy Bitsy Spider ...

...the itsy bitsy phoebe flew 'round and 'round the bush!
Down came the snake and scared the bird away...
Out came the ducks; disturbed its focal stare!

...again, the itsy bitsy phoebe, it flitted through the air!!

WILD BIRD NATURE NOTES

Bud spotted the Diamondback Water Snake at the feeder channel to the bay the other day while out birding!!  Eventually the birds returned and ignored it.

HODGEPODGE

1. It's been said that one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day. Do you think that's true? Do you find that an easy exercise most mornings? What's something positive you told yourself today? If you missed that boat, what's something positive you could tell yourself tomorrow? It's always good to be positive. No matter what time of day!! I guess that by telling myself that "if you think your day is going bad, stop. Think about those that have it worse and you'll see the bright side." Something like that.

2. There will be karaoke at the next party you attend...are you in? Or will you be faking a sore throat? I wouldn't attend the party...I've never done this, why would I start at the next party? I'll stick to my own ritual of singing in the shower where the acoustics are much more to my liking!

3. January 29th is National Puzzle Day...what's something you've found puzzling recently? Recently? Why not the entire white house term from the beginning? Now that is a puzzle NO ONE can figure out.  And I realize by reading  over how I answered some of the following questions, this isn't all that positive...but I can honestly say it is a puzzle, yet I realize other countries have less than we Americans.

4. Jigsaw, crossword, acrostic, logic, sudoku, word search...what's your favorite kind of puzzle, and when did you last work one? I love working on jigsaw puzzles. There is one puzzle that I've glued and had framed, for a personal reason... to remember my recouping from my first heart episode and hospitalization...a reminder of how precious life is. Not the picture, but the working of the puzzle while recouping and getting back to 100%. It's hanging on a wall for nearly 20 years now. Just a personal thing. I worked on this puzzle while mending at home.

5. Recently a writer by the name of Amy Glass ruffled feathers with a post she wrote saying she looks down on young women with husbands and kids and she's not sorry. Among other things, she says women will be equal with men when we stop saying house work and real work are equally important. What say you? Do you think men and women are equal in the 21st century? Why or why not? My thoughts and this Ms. Glass thoughts are from two minds, naturally. What I think and what she thinks isn't important. It's what you feel in your heart. Whatever it is...live by it, and enjoy what you're doing...equality to men be 'dammed'. [by the way, when I was single, a youngster, my parents were equals...Bud and I are equals. No matter if we work outside the home...when it comes to married life, we are half and half... yet a 'whole' team, and ONLY in that aspect are we equals...men and women are different, how in the world do some people consider the two sexes are equal other than partnership? --AND an added note, family is highly important to me.]

6. What's a product you've noticed in the grocery store that you'd like to try, but haven't yet? Well, I've seen this product many-a-times and just yesterday I saw it again...I tried it...it was delicious. Sliced white breast of turkey, mesquite smoked with jalapeno peppers in the meat...dunno how they did it, but  it makes a mean, delicious sandwich!!  I know the question was 'haven't tried it'...but I  hadn't 'til just this week.

7. The author, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) was born this week in 1832 (January 27th). Which character from his celebrated novel, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, would you most like to meet, and why? None, really. So, I'll go with which I like best...it'd be the Cheshire Cat. Its ability to appear and disappear on a whim sounds good. Altho it isn't compared to the Lewis Carroll book, I must admit, in the most recent movie, with Johnny Depp...the character that rocked my world was the Queen of Hearts!! ---"Off with their heads"!!!--- Can you say "Congress"? Ohhhhhhh, sorry. Got carried away. The real  reason I liked this character most of all was the make up. The very large head in comparing her body. The heart shaped hair-do. The magic of movie-making!   [besides, Helena Bonham Carter is a favorite movie star of mine] Oh and I don't wanna forget that awesome silver suit of armor Alice wore to slay the Jabberwocky, which by the way, I don't think was actually in the story Alice. Correct me if I'm wrong.

8. Insert your own random thought here. We've been doing a bit of Spring yard work the last few warm days. Yesterday, we tackled a dreaded chore. We've been putting it off on purpose. It's a wicked bush. To begin with, this bougainvillea isn't the one we trimmed but one in our front yard...the one we trimmed, I have no photo of...it is the bush that grew and grew and grew!! Yesterday, before beginning, we estimated the height to be about 15-18 feet high. A bush? More like a small tree!! And the growth was dense. Oh it was beautiful each year when the brackets would change color to the deep magenta reds. Did I say wicked? Both Bud and I felt like pin cushions before we finished. It went from its original height to the level of the 6 foot privacy fence. A much needed job since the thorns are thick, dense and at the height it was, the thorns and thick branches were scraping the paint off the eave on the garage AND putting deep cuts in the roof shingles!! A small price to pay for beauty...NOT!!

PS...for the first time in history the Superbowl will be watchable ONLINE, on your phones...every electronic device available!!  Bud and I won't have to go to a sports bar for this.  We can watch it on our computer since we no longer  have cable TV.

§ Lyric revision -- rated: PG 17

When I saw this stuff hangin' from a truck's bumper the other day, the children's song came to mind. Of course, I was humming the song all the way home...but really...after the initial shock of seeing this, I had to go back and pull out my phone to get a picture of it.   Afterall, I'm only human...and a little giggling now and then is okay in my book.   Tho it may not be appropriate for some Shadow Seekers, this is what I am gonna post anyway. And if I offend anyone, I apologize. But I gotta be me, what else can I be? rofl

Do your ears BALLS hang low?
Do they wobble to and fro?
Can you tie 'em in a knot?
Can you tie 'em in a bow?
Can you throw 'em o'er your shoulder
Like a continental soldier
Do your ears BALLS hang low?

Also, when I went out to Google to perform a search for the correct lyrics yesterday, I opened up my Google Bookmark, and this header came to my view [enlarge for bigger, readable views]:

Aha!! Someone else was celebrating a birthday, like I was. Out of curiosity, I had to find out just who else had a birthday, so I moved my mouse to the candle/cupcake graphic that spelled out "Google"... and to my utter surprise, the textarea box [the alt code] said "Happy Birthday Hootin'!" I couldn't believe my eyes. How did they, at Google, do that? I was shocked. Google has had these kinds of headers for special holidays, birthdays of the 'greats' like Einstein, Martin Luther King, American Independence, etc. But Hootin' Anni? No, couldn't be. So I clicked on the header and it then redirected to my Google Plus Profile. Amazing.

...and, to be honest, there for a few moments, I was in complete memory loss as to why I went out to Google in the first place. Oh ya, to find lyrics so I could copy, paste and share. Now, I feel a bit ashamed of myself for thinking as I did, on the lyric revision that is, and feeling compelled to have a bit of fun for when preparing a shadow post on Saturday afternoon. But, what the heck, at my age...well, never mind!!!  However it was all done, and whoever came up with this idea, I must say, the birthday was made extra special for me.  Thanks Google, and thanks to whoever did this.  I was completely speechless at the time, and really quite elated at the same time.  Wow.

Dear 'diary'... I seem to be on a music merry go 'round. I just posted about the remote selection boxes of my youth just yesterday, and now...here I am again, talking more music. I can't begin to understand how some of the songs today make it to the top 100! In fact...for the last decade or two it's been a puzzle for me. What happened to the good songs?!! It seems that the music culture has turned to a low of lows. At least in my opinion. Don't get me wrong...I love music. And some of the songs of the day aren't that bad...but it seems all you see anymore are the names like KeSha or Lady Gaga or Eminem....which brings me to their names. Oh boy. 'Nough said. Anyway, for me, music today is all the same. Same beat, same tones, same rhythms, same composition...and really close to the same, identical subjects. What happened to the good music of yesteryear? What happened to the songwriters and the composers that had music that was easy to listen to and comprehend....without the reference to such a rough living, heavy drinking or drugs or violence? Not to mention the singers of my generation and before, dressed halfway decent without the baggy blue jeans, the leather jackets, the high 'leaving nothing to the imagination' hiked hemlines or low cut bodices [or lack of in some cases]? Where are the songs that had class? Where are the singers that are proud of who they are, dressing with a bit of taste instead of the ungodly outfits they don to perform now-a-days? I was going through the Billboard's top 100...I couldn't believe my eyes. I couldn't believe what I read...all quite identical to the previous listed. Then, I came to #59. "Pretty Good at Drinking Beer". Of course, just by the title I knew it would be Country. Of course. Now I like Country as well as Classical, Oldies, Instrumental, Soundtracks, etc. But I had to stop and listen to this one....oh my. The song is recorded by none other than the same who said: God is great beer is good and people are crazy. To me, this shows quite a bit of mentality...or should I say deficiency of any mental capabilities----

I wasn’t born for diggin deep holes
I’m not made for pavin long roads
I ain’t cut out to climb high line poles
But I’m pretty good at drinkin beer

I’m not the type to work in a bank
I’m no good at slappin on things
Don’t have a knack for makin motors crank, no
But I’m pretty good at drinkin beer

So hand me one more
That’s what I’m here for
I’m built for having a ball
I love the nightlife
I love my Bud light
I like ‘em cold and tall

I ain’t much for mowin thick grass
I’m too slow for workin’ too fast
I don’t do windows so honey don’t ask
But I’m pretty good at drinkin’ beer

A go getter maybe I’m not
I’m not known for doin’ a lot
But I do my best work when the weather’s hot
I’m pretty good at drinkin’ beer

So hand me one more
That’s what I’m here for
I’m built for having a ball
I love the nightlife
I love my Bud light
I like ‘em cold and tall

I wasn’t born for diggin deep holes
I’m not made for pavin long roads
I aint cut out to climb high line poles
But I’m pretty good at drinkin beer
I’m pretty good at drinkin beer

[Spoken] o hand me one more boys…
That’s what I’m here for

Lyrics found here

What happened to the songs that made you think? What happened to the songs that no words are needed? Instrumentals that give you gooseflesh while you listen to them? What happened to those that made you feel like living? What happened to the songs that you could listen to the lyrics and say to yourself, this is excellent? I guess it has to do with each generation maybe? Perhaps the kids today like 'their' songs because of all the associations...maybe reminiscent of video games? I don't know really. All I know is my theory is...the songs from generations past are much much better!! I bet, literally, if Beethoven were to hear the songs that are recorded today, he WOULD BE ROLLIN' OVER!! I'm thinking right now...a Country song done by Roy Clark. Yesterday. It begins "Yesterday when I was young, the taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue. I teased at life as if it were a foolish game, the way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame". Now really, this you can see yourself in the lyrics. At least I can. Or a theme song like Summer Place. By Percy Faith [I'm sure some have never even heard of him]...."There's a summer place Where it may rain or storm Yet I'm safe and warm For within that summer place Your arms reach out to me And my heart is free from all care For it knows." The instrumental of this soundtrack is so soothing. So wistful...so relaxing. It's tastefully done. Gives you a dreamlike feeling all over your body. Or the song from Picnic...the most sexy dance for me still, on cinema..."Moonglow" ----oh boy, I'll always remember that moonglow gave me you---how could you not fall deep with emotion? Or maybe an oldie like Stardust, or perhaps "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca----------play 'em again Sam, play 'em all!!

§ ...Sunday, Monday happy days...Tuesday Wednesday happy days---

---those were the days my friend!!

You may wonder the reason behind this image [borrowed from wikipedia search] I am using to open my blog today. Trust me it'll be explained in just a bit. But, first....
While visiting another blogger friend a couple of days ago, she had posted a new Halloween project she just finished. Perhaps there are others out there in blogland that love Halloween more than I? Guess so. Of course, when I find another who is enthusiastic with All Hallow's Eve, they're instant friends! LOL I haven't even had a thought of the day so far this year. I said so far. Not until I visited her blog's finished crafting. Was I ever inspired. Y'all can call me a copy cat. But I loved her's so much, I told Bud this is gonna be a necessity for the two of us. Yep...it'll call for his mechanical craftsmanship also. Poor guy. I can get him into all kinds of messes that way. LOL Of course, it's way too early to even begin to show you what I'm gonna do with this idea, it's all still in the mind's eye for now; thinking and planning, but someday in a month or two...it'll be all done. And I will have a show n tell of it; completed.

I mentioned that this weekend we are supposed to be 'drying' up some weatherwise. I got out early yesterday morning to enjoy the first rays of sun...a beautiful butterfly was doing the same. I watched it flit around a bit, and when it remained so close within our yard, I went and loaded the digital and caught it in flight. I added the photo on my Photo Blog...COLORS OF THE WIND yesterday. You can click on the link and the two photos I took, one of the elusive butterfly and the other of a fresh white hibiscus blossom. You'd think with all the hibiscus photos I take it's a favorite of mine. Well, roses are a favorite, but they're always suffering in the extreme heat and don't have the HUGE profusion of blossoms as they do in the Spring and Fall.

And speaking of butterflies. I remember a song from my teen-aged years that I loved. Remember going into a local diner with the selection box at the booths? And you flip through the song titles - on the side the number and letter? Puttin' in a coin, and pushing the corresponding letter and number. In a few seconds's time, you can watch the jukebox in the corner---in no time, the selected song begins to play. I selected H 6...
