§ Beauty is in the Eyes of the Beholder....

These photos were taken just after sunrise along the park's beach in Rockport, Texas. I didn't realize it'd be like it was as the sun was peeking over the horizon, until it was up in the sky for about 15 minutes. I was walking along the trails and not paying much attention 'til I actually looked! LOL

This park, along the beach bay has been in the midst of a huge renovation since damages from hurricanes. I always like walking here very early in the morning...at the end of the trails, there is a rookery where several species nest in the Spring months.

This will be my last post for a while! I will be...

§ The Week Before Christmas...

I've finished getting the house cleaned. Today I'm baking pecan cookies, tomorrow I will make peanut brittle and popcorn balls, then, the next day I'll make a couple of pies. I know for sure, one pumpkin [it's Erik's favorite] and either a cherry or apple pie. On the Christmas menu we will again have roasted turkey, dressing, 3 bean salad, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry waldorf jello salad [cherry jello, whole cranberries, celery, marshmallows and pecans], yams, cole slaw, yeast rolls and probably a relish dish with pickles, olives, cheeses, etc. I don't know why I make all the extra stuff, 'cause we all favor the turkey, dressing and potatoes most. Egg nog will be served, along with liquor and ice water [ice water for me!!]

We have games lined up, Uno, Pinochle [partners], the deluxe quadruple scrabble, trivial pursuit, hearts, and probably penny ante poker.

My sister and I plan on making a gingerbread house. That'll be a 'first' for us both. Sharon seems excited about it. That's what counts...give her a bit of entertainment and hopefully some giggles. New Year's Day is her birthday, so dining out is called for...dunno where yet, tho.  Along with champagne.   Needless to say, it'll be two weeks of a continual sugar-high!!!

This will be my last post until after New Year's sometime. I think Sharon will depart for a flight back home to Colorado on the 4th. Then, I'll tear down the decorations and get home back to normal and return to blogging.

By the way, altho my profile states I began blogging in November of 2006. That is partially true. I don't consider that my blog-o-versary tho. My very first blog post was on Christmas DAY!! So, on Christmas, this will be my 15th year of blogging. Checking my stats it shows I've published 3685 posts in that time frame! I really didn't know I was that gabby. Guess so. At the beginning my blog was Hootin' Anni's Chronicles, but after I decided to 'chronicle' my bird day trips and calculate my goal of 10K steps each day walking, etc. I changed it to Hootin' Anni's Day Trippin' and stuck with that title. More fitting!

I admit, I get easily side-tracked at times while blogging. Sketching, photography, humor, crafting [like the Santa afghan shown here. I made my own graph to follow and I think it turned out pretty good!], etc. As far as blogging goes, I do tend to stay away from politics and religion [that's all too personal], and besides, I don't like to be preached to or I don't like others trying to get me to change my standing on government...so, why should I sit here and preach or campaign to those who read my blog? Sometimes, the finding of a good book or watching an exceptional movie gets my attention and I blog about it.  Sometimes I blog about family.  I've been meaning to blog about my youngest grandson and what he's been doing of which I am so proud!  I keep forgetting.  Maybe I will remember to write about it all in the future.

Well, I best go get to working on other things. I plan to take a short drive to the bay coast [not the islands] this morning before making cookies. A newly constructed pier was 'christened' this past weekend after Hurricane Harvey demolished the old one. I will take photos hopefully. I am sure if I don't get there before the 'newness' wears thin, there will be trash and graffiti and it won't be pretty as it looked on the news the other night. And the weather will be cool with a promise of some rain... before it turns tropical-warm again before the week's over.

Y'all take care, I will return after the first week in January sometime. In the meantime, have a great holiday if you observe, stay safe.  Stay healthy!  Maybe the valediction is redundant but... See'ya in 2022!!!

§ NAS and Going on a Break...

The following morning after the storm that flooded the city, the sun broke over the cloudless horizon. I was elated. Tho, I should've stayed home and prepared Erik's room for when he arrives Friday, I just couldn't resist getting outdoors again. I knew the islands would still be flooded [the park highway to Port A was closed Wednesday for a long time, and I assumed there'd still be some standing water], so I opted to go along the shore on Ocean Drive. Again, near the Naval Air Station. I figured the mudflats would be full of water and I was pretty sure there wouldn't be too much in the birding realm since deep water is only for waders, but I could get a good 3 mile walk one way there. At times, before I crossed the bridge about halfway to the Navy Gate, I had to walk down the center of the four lane highway [two directions]. Right smack dab on the yellow dividing line. Standing water on both sides!! This air base is a Naval Flight Training School for the most part, and the pilots and staff [both military and civil service] drive 60 in a 40 MPH zone. I was waiting to be a statistic...Headlines: "Old Lady Hit by a Private 1st Class trainee and left melting in the pool of water leftover from the May 19th Storm in the Land of Oz".

Well, I counted quite a few steps one way, enjoyed the views of the Bay waters sparkling in the morning sunshine, and walked by several fishermen/women and sighted in on a couple of plovers...on the other side. At the mudflats, egrets, herons, pelicans, gulls, avocets, willets were seen. Way off in the distance on the return base's runway, I spied a flock of terns on the shore. It was a great morning for a quiet walk. When I got back to the car, I hopped in the driver's seat and headed to the farmer's market, and then stopped at a grocery store to stock up on the staples Erik calls food!! He eats odd things and drinks smoothies that look like green slime. Doesn't smell much better either. But, I got some GOOD [unhealthy]foods for US too. We're set. The only thing yet to do is fill the air mattress that fits on the portable bed frame.
I will be taking a blog break while he is here during his Semester Break from teaching at the university. Altho I have another pre-scheduled bird photo blog set for Saturday posting. Be back shortly; in a few days. In the meantime a few more photos and another Troll Doll showcased:

§ Two Days of H E double L

Wow!!! The last couple of days have been a royal nightmare!! At least as far as the internet goes. Since we no longer have cable [going on 7 years now], I use our cellphone provider's hotspot when home, and wi-fi when out and about if need be. Or even the cellphone itself to login for emails and getting on blogger. Well, the last time I posted a blog, I was telling y'all about leaving comments in your blog comment form and not knowing if my comment went through, and that if there were repeated comments, I didn't know!!! So, after two days of getting disconnected after getting on a secure hotspot connection, and not being able to check emails either over the laptop or our phones...I called our cell phone carrier and got a REAL LIVE PERSON to chat with...after giving some info and discussing the disruptions for days...I'll call her M&M...she discovered that it was just in our area of the city, and they were repairing as we talked. GOOGLE  was even suspicious of my getting online/disconnected/logging in/disconnected all the time!! Come to find out, someone damaged a cell phone tower!! Lord have mercy. If I'd known that I would have gone to another part of town, like the library or Starbucks...somewhere, and did my blogging from there. Anyway, this morning, we watched a couple of TV programs over our hotspot, and everything is again, hunky dory!!! I hope...I haven't even tried to save this yet.

§ I Said I Shall Return....And I'm Returning for Now...

Got my letters sent, and called my congressmen. Now that is out of the way, and I got my thoughts off my mind. I know it will do no good, probably, but my voice was heard. Sometimes when I'm agitated about how things are handled, I don't just talk the talk; this time around I walked the walk!! Being disgusted and just talking about it over the coffee table [or blogging about it] isn't accomplishing much. If only enough people in America would do something to show their disappointment individually [not protesting in huge groups on the streets with violence and signage, but sending emails, letters and calling =more like a silent majority], maybe things would get done. How I can wish!!!

Also, in my blogging absence, I revamped one of my witch dolls and added some yellows. I will show photos later.

Then, my long, tedious job of typing and adding photos to 293 pages plus a cover page is done and saved as PDF files, along with the MS Word files [about half way through the project on WORD - just copying it all from PDF files, it got messed up on microsoft, I had to start from the beginning!!!]. So, double the job- and three people did proof reading for me...that's a total of 586 pages if my math is correct. It's done. Now, I'm contemplating that perhaps I'll do some publishing of this project online. MAYBE!! I haven't decided yet as to what I'm gonna do with it. But at least it's saved, and on discs and I finally, after about 5 years of collecting, and adding data, I can get it off the computer.
Yay!!

Taking some breaks in the early morning to walk, on Thursday, I went to South Bay Park in town, and enjoyed the quiet solitude to view the sunrise, walk the pathways, and enjoy the busyness of the few birds seen around the park...

...of course, the quickly-becoming-a-favorite wildflower of mine, the sunflower:

Underneath the fern-leaf mesquite tree, the glow of the tranquil, morning bay waters...

A snowy egret in search of breakfast...

A willet by the pier...

The pier and cityscape [the tiny island in the foreground has a small bird, a sandpiper.  A spotted sandpiper to be exact]...

The moon...

...and a zoomed-in photo

Storm clouds beginning to break up to another day of record heat!!  [by the way, the inferno continues.  With the Hurricane that hit Old Mexico, Franklin, I was hoping that we'd get some much needed moisture...well, at home at least, we got about FIVE minutes of rain after it made landfall miles away...and the temps returned to a heat index of 105 to 110!!]

I never cease to be dazzled by the environment...this long billed curlew is so well camouflaged in the dried lawn while it hunts for insects, it's clearly, a nature's gift of protection for the hunter and the hunted!!

...and with this post, I am back.  I probably will take a few hours here and there to catch up on house work that was ignored the last week, but I hope to get around to publishing a bit more once in a while and be able to visit y'all again on a more regular basis.

§ Projects and Blogging....

First and foremost, some of you realize that my Wordless "Oil" Paintings are not really painted!! For those that may be confused, I feel [from reading the recent comments you left me] that I need to explain. As I have posted on my sidebar [scroll down], the 'oil paintings' are just photos of mine where I use the antique oil filter that is linked there.

Now, to go a bit further...

I have three projects that are taking up a lot of my computer time since I only allow myself an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon of sitting on my butt time! I am busy writing/composing letters to all my state's congressmen/women to voice my disappointment in our government; especially this fiasco of the repealing of Obamacare and the 'threats' of raising our premiums to cover it!! Which I believe is most unfair for the fact, those of us that have been paying into our private insurance for decades...well, I think we should NOT be penalized just because those that wish to chose this Affordable Care or the 'newest version' if ever it passes and we, that have private insurance...should Not have to pay for THEM. Those of us who hold a policy through insurance companies are being nickled and dimed to pay for others who want 'free'. Not fair, and I am loudly voicing my disgust in their [congress] handling this and cheating us. This is all taking up a lot of my time. I am also calling, vocally, if I can get through to their offices!!  I'll probably end up with a satellite following me but...I don't care at this point.  Americans need to give voice to the unfair acts that the government impose on us citizens.

Another project, when I'm done with my letters to congress, I have an ongoing Microsoft Word Project that is a multi-hundred page work in progress. I've not worked on it for months, and have vowed to get 'er done before summer ends and I can be outdoors beginning next month, I hope!

Then, lastly this is just in the 'thinking' stages right now but I plan to revamp one of my witch dolls, in yellow!! Each one I have purchased over the years, I have been hoping to find one cloaked in black and yellow ribbon and lace...Nada. So, I told Bud, "I'm gonna make my own in yellow". Afterall, yellow is part of a candy you see mainly during that time of year...candy corn. Right? So, yellow just hasta be a Halloween color besides black and orange and purple!! lol

So, while I'm working diligently to get some of this done, I am taking a break from blogging.
I will get to visiting with you, when I feel I can take some time out from these listed above to say a biggo Texas Howdy to y'all!!!

In the meantime, I bid you adieu for now. See ya later this month, I hope.

PS...my birding meme at I'd Rather B Birdin' will continue in my absence from Hootin' Anni's tho...
