§ A Mystery, a Movie, Mayhem, Matriach, and Myself

  • Movies:  Long ago, in fact the year was 1959....I was ten!! My mom and dad allowed me to go to the movie theater alone. This movie holds a bit of nostalgia for me since it was the FIRST MOVIE I saw in a theater. I fell in love with Stephen Boyd [even tho he was reported being gay...that chin cleft just about blew me away. He played Messala in Ben Hur...the evil counterpart of Ben Hur]. For a pre-teen the dark hair and those piercing steel gray-blue eyes with Irish good looks, well...the rest is history. Anyway, Erik, our son, texted me that in August of this year, Ben Hur is going to return to the big screen. I anxiously await its remake!! I just KNOW I'll be sitting on the edge of my seat during the chariot race to make his family, enslaved by the Empire, free. Revenge couldn't smell as sweet!! I'm 100% sure I'll see it more than once.

  • Murder Mystery:  In 2005 an unsolved murder in Aruba...the prime suspect confesses. We knew all along, didn't we?

  • Mayhem:  Or, another "M" word comes to mind...'mogul'...[I quote from another website] "It will probably come as no shock to you that Donald Trump owned 14,000 apartments by the time he was 27. He owned them under the Trump Management Corporation which he built almost single-handedly (with only a small $1 million “loan” from Daddy Bigbucks)." He is 69...born in 1946.  Of course, his name pops up hourly on the social/news media....but I keep thinking of the historical event from the past....Could the Republican Party be headed to yet another Brokered Convention?  It's a scary thought!!

  • Matriarch: My sister, the oldest living female in our "clan", has been matriarch for nearly 22 years [since my mother's passing]. Annually, for the last two and half decades, the two of us have set aside the 18th of March as Sister's Day. We celebrate with small tokens of sisterhood; sending each other gifts, an early night toasting of champagne with our synchronized clocks to each. I, facing west to Colorado, Sharon [my sister], facing south to Texas. "Here's to Sisterhood. Live long, Live well!" By the way, I can't let her outdo me....I am matriarch of my married name....I am the eldest living female on Bud's side of the family since his sister passed away a couple of years ago. Does that make me feel special? No, not really. But, with sibling rivalry, I can't let my sister have ALL the glory. *wink*

  • Myself:  48 years ago this month, Bud and I had our first date. Three months later, we were married!! Talk about livin' on the fast track! I guess, for the both of us, tho we knew of each other for over a year...it was love at first sight! Bud, a retired Federal employee with Navy under his belt...Me, before marrying, and working with the school job placement program my junior and senior year, I was head office receptionist at a Chamber of Commerce; during our children's school years I was Office Supervisor at the School District so I could have holidays/spring/summers off when the kids were home during their breaks, then, a retired coordinator for a psychiatric facility. Two children -1969 and 1972- Irene and Erik [a safe house counselor in Missouri and a former Marine Corporal now a college professor in Houston] two grandsons -1989 and 1996- a grandson's engagement this year. It all equals a grand 48 years this coming May 11th, when we celebrate our life together as one. ...This is a repeat posting of my photo; posted each March on my blog at some point.

    § Wordy...

In our local news, there is to be a new structure going up. The groundbreaking held Sunday, January 31st.
... claims it will be one of the tallest in the world. -It's gonna be the second largest  in the world.  The largest  in the world is in Madrid, Spain. It will be the largest in the western hemisphere. ...sitting on a foundation that's 38 feet octagon,  three feet deep with steel and concrete, has 24 piers that go 48 feet into the ground. So if it were to blow over, it would pull up about three acres of land with it.-
Okay, so I need to get a few things off my chest. First, why? Is it to 'outdo' everyone? For prestige, for egos...what? And then, why in this gawd-awful area?  Will it be beautified with landscaping or just out in the field? Why this particular design? Being that the city is Corpus Christi [the body of Christ]...then, why not a crucifix instead of just the simple construction? The new, proposed structure is a cross. It's touted to become the 2nd tallest cross in the world... It will stand at the height of 210 feet [64 meters]!! But I tend to remain in a quandary...why not a well designed crucifix to depict the city's moniker? Why build this across the interstate from all the beastly looking oil refineries instead of a more pristine area on the bluff, downtown, near the bay and parks? And, why go to the expense [estimated over 1 Million dollars]...when so many are homeless and needy in our country? It boggles my mind. But, what is my opinion worth? Zip, zilch, nada. The only thing I like is the concept, and I do hope in some way it will be lighted in the nighttime landscape.  The last thought would be the impact on religious beliefs and the reaction of the populace around the area/country...that remains to be seen/heard.

Mentioning the adult coloring books in a previous post, I finished another with the colored pencils. Yes, I did not use the typical color of flesh -by that I mean the name 'flesh' is usually associated with the Caucasian persuasion- a Black Fairy? You betcha!! Why not? The flowers on this particular page reminded me of Foxglove blossoms...

I changed my profile image, did you notice? An owl, for my blog title.

The other day with the lyrics association with my photos and researching about what the psychological terminology is...if you missed it....when a song keeps running through your mind all day, the term is EARWORM. Again, researching this, the origin is from German, Ohrwurm. The word consists of 2 parts… das Ohr means the ear and der Wurm means the worm. The worm, an earwig, is an insect that crawls into your ear and in most cases has to be extracted. In modern English, a loose translation is a song, that you hear and once inside your mind, it is kind of hard to 'get it out again'… and this is exactly what these songs do to you. While reading about it and the science involved, I read about a recent episode of The Big Bang Theory [a popular American sit-com] and Sheldon was driving his roommates 'bananas' with humming a song that wouldn't leave his head. Watch it here: Sheldon's Earworm
In popular cultures, authors have used earworms in their writings...a slogan, repetitive words, things that get stuck in your head...or Mark Twain writing about jingles in The Literary Nightmare. So many times catch phrases are used and they oftentimes become earworms.   One time in history a catch phrase was used distract the Nazis. Interesting reading...
We've all struggled with it from time to time and most often wish we'd never listened in the first place. But now that I'm done sharing, allow me run a test:----------

    --------- "Hootin' Anni's Hootin' Anni's Hootin' Anni's!!

    § Red Sky...

First I'd like to note that the slideshow/video I composed and added to my youtube account showing the the G B Heron with its plate full of EEL. It wasn't an eel, it was a siren salamander!! Thanks to Ken for enlightening me!! I appreciate your knowledge and correcting me.

    Now...to my post:

You just can't have a prettier way to wake up in the morning....would'ya look at the colors in this sky?

The two of us have kept busy off and on the entire last week. For months now, I have wanted to tear off the hall bathroom's wallpaper and get it ready for a nice new coat of paint instead!! If you've ever done this task, you'll know it takes a lot of time and effort to rid the walls of the glue/sizing left on the surface after ripping down the paper. Our hall bath has two rooms...the tub area and the lavatory area separated by a wall. We finally got the paper down and the walls cleaned and ready for painting over the week's time. But, we're in no hurry, so we are opting to 'live with the unfinished' rooms 'til next weekend. Our backs are achy...we need to recoup.

Did you all watch the weekend's horse race? The race was streamed live online; it was so exciting! A TRIPLE CROWN WINNER. The winning horse was a beauty!! And to witness history being made with a triple crown stakes since 1978...it was thrilling. Now all I can think of is 'stud fees'. Long ago, when Lucky, our horse, had come into season, it was decided to acquire a stud...way back then it was expensive....I can't even fathom the cost of American Pharoah's "services" now that he has those credentials.

Have y'all heard about Dragon? He's a piebald fawn that was rejected by its mama, but rescued and being cared for....happily!!! Read his story HERE Funny thing is, its MAMA is piebald!!

A couple of days ago, we took a long drive around the county roads near the area called Chapman's Ranch. I took my large lens camera along, but no tripod. Yes, I got a new tripod, but haven't had time to use it yet. Maybe today...who knows. Anyway, as we drove, I was surprised that there was very little standing water in the fields. Some of this area is oil wells/derricks pumping in the far distances off the roads. There were very few birds, except for red winged blackbirds, doves, grackles...one lone duck, one lone osprey and one lone white tailed hawk. I spotted the hawk perched atop an oil derrick that wasn't operating....stopping the car, I took a photo of the 'natural' distance and then zoomed in half way...then used full zoom. Of course the full zoom isn't clear, I am hoping that a tripod will help with clarity!! Thought I'd share the 3 photos...

...from the road - look for the small dark 'spot' atop the derrick head!

    ...zooming in half way

...full zoom, using the car window as a tripod...still a lot of movement in the viewfinder!! And not too clear.

    § Some of the Marvelous...

Aristotle once said: "In All Things of Nature There is Something of the Marvelous"

Today, just a bit of eclectic images from around town. From a beautiful sunrise to fog settling in on the city's North Bay. Perhaps you may agree that all things in nature are marvelous. The tempest, the beauty, the extreme, the simple, the hues, the serene...you name it. For each, there is a purpose---

    SUNRISE FROM OUR YARD

Fog Drifting into the North Shore

    Mama Cardinal
    Parasite - Mistletoe in Bloom

    Marigolds by a Tree Stump
Fungus Taking on the 'Look' of Bark
    Papa Cardinal
    Orange Crowned Warbler
    Golden Fronted Woodpecker
Brown - Green Anoles on a Park Fence

Then, some eclectic thoughts for the day:
each tidbit is linked for the full coverage story...

Did you know that the NFL [National Football League] is TAX EXEMPT? Ya, that threw me for a loop too. But, I had to go out to Google to clarify this for myself. I was flabbergasted to read the tax exempt when I knew all too well that the teams rake in billions of dollars each year. How can an outfit like this that makes a profit be free of paying taxes when we common folk are taxed to death? Okay...thing is, the NFL has been tax exempt since 1942!! But it isn't the individual franchises....the teams...it only pertains to the promoting offices of the league...the office only, which is considered a non-profit organization. Still, it was a mind boggler!!

Speaking of mind boggling!!---Did you know this piece of gossip? Bruce Jenner, transitioning into a woman?  I guess, to each his own.  Or IOW - different strokes for different folks!! Okay, okay....I can't help myself...forgive me, but, I gotta state this thought that's been swirling in my brain: "From Bruce Jenner to Jenny Bruce"...kinda a nice ring to it don't you think? [No offense Jenny! errr, um, Bruce?] Whatever. As long as he/she is happy. Another whatever!!!!

Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman - I'm nearly finished with the book. It's very good. While reading this piece of work, I find myself reminded of two books actually. There is a flair of Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear and Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth. I'm anxious to come to the conclusion. Even tho it's based of a factual event in Biblical times, and historians know the outcome, this book will leave the reader with either an urge to check the real history of the event, or be a bit naive with the fictional version Ms. Hoffman created. I do recommend the book. I do look forward to the mini series that will be aired in March on CBS. But, I can't give it a five star rating. All because it's a work of fiction and doubts will linger as to the research she supposedly did for the final [published] draft.

A holiday tradition [ya, I know it's nearing Valentine's Day but...] in a local Houston Starbucks that my son frequents daily for coffee and chit-chat.  He has been a donor AND a recipient of a gift of a charitable car rental when his own car was totaled...so he could get to classes where he teaches, then by the week's end he could get his own car.  It just warms my heart.  And I plan on becoming one who 'pays it forward' this season by sending Erik some cash to donate in his name!!!

Last but not least...this is self explanatory!!!

§ ...It's Out of this World!!

    What I mean is this:

With embedding permission from our local news station, I wanted to share this bit of news. The video requires Flash, so, if you can't view this, or if for some reason the video has been deleted from the news station site and unavailable, I'm sharing a blurb from the article online. If it piques your interest a little more, you can visit the website's article:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -A young woman living in Corpus Christi and attending Del Mar College has signed up to be a part of the first mission to Mars -- a one-way trip.

Moving on...today is my birthday. And I don't mind telling at all, I am now 6 1/2....decades that is. I'll most likely not be online. Just gonna sit back and enjoy my day with Bud. Have no special plans except for my annual FRIED Shrimp Dinner; dining out. I really look forward to this since I don't eat fried food much on any other given time in the year. And I know I will enjoy it. Bud laughs at me craving this meal for 364 days...countdown and all. He can eat anything and never gain an ounce. Me? I just think of fried foods and pack on a pound or two. Oh well. What else the day will bring, I don't know. By the way, this image is of me and my mom. As far as I know it's the last one taken of me in Nebraska...the state I was born in...soon to be a Colorado resident for 40+ years.

Yes, as you know, lately the weather has been a big issue in my postings here at Hootin' Anni's ---it's been so very unusually cold. We've used the furnace this past couple of months MORE THAN the whole decade in the house combined. And I'm really not equipped in the wardrobe department for such freezing temps. Oh I have a coat...lightweight. I also have a fleece lined coat in the trunk of the car. I use it often when out walking lately. But I only have a small Longhorn stocking cap. It's okay...keeps the top of my head warm. But with very short hair, the stocking cap doesn't keep my neck warm. LOL So, I took a look in my huge basket of extra yarn skeins and pulled out a skein of variegated purple/magenta/blue yarn and made another cap. This one pattern I found online is called Bob Marley Slouch Cap. It's a very easy pattern, and works up quickly!!! Now that I have it completed, and readied for when I'm outdoors in the cold winds, Spring will arrive and I won't have any need for it. Isn't that the way things are? For me, always. I'm always a day late and a dollar short, which according to the idiom dictionary, it is me for sure: "late and ill-prepared".

In History the year I was born:

    -Harry S. Truman was president
    - A Series of winter storms in Nebraska, Wyoming, South Dakota, Utah, Colorado and Nevada – winds of up to 72 mph – tens of thousands of cattle and sheep perish. Posted previously by me...on February 9, 2008 I shared this family portrait of the Blizzard of '49! "...The photo was taken on February 9th, 1949. The Day I Was Born. The county snowplows cleared the country roads so mom could get to the hospital to deliver. No, really that is true....my family was blessed with good country folk ready to lend a helping hand, and the county officials kept the snow drifts off the country roads into town for her!! In the photo [foreground], two of my uncles and the one with the shovel is my dad who left the hospital after I was born, to help clear the snow in the yard/walkways, off roof-tops and around the barns, etc.; with the help of many neighbors. Heavy snowfall, heavy scooping, but that morning, then - not so heavy mom! LOL [my dad's height was 5'10" ...] It's reported online here that before the blizzard of 1948 - 1949 ended, parts of my home state received over 100 inches of snow and drifts as high as 30 feet.
-Los Angeles, California receives its first recorded snowfall.
-The first Volkswagen Beetle to arrive in the United States
-The first Emmy Awards are presented.
-The 21st Academy Awards ceremony is held.
-The North Atlantic Treaty is signed in Washington, D.C., creating the NATO defense alliance.
-Albert II, a rhesus monkey, becomes the first primate to enter space.
-Howard Unruh, a World War II veteran, kills 13 neighbors in Camden, New Jersey with a souvenir Luger to become America's first single-episode mass murderer.
-Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific, starring Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza, opens on Broadway.

Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

    § Whazzz-up?

Our local theater, Harbor Playhouse, opens their annual Christmas Musical this weekend...From the 1843 story by Dickens...A CHRISTMAS CAROL. We've attended this several times, and it never fails to completely entertain us!!! The amateur actors do a fantastic job under their directors. The music, the singing, the stage direction, the scenery...all very well done.

For the last 23 years, the world renowned cattle ranch, rich in Texas history, will hold their annual Cowboy Breakfast on Saturday, the 23rd of November [it's always held on the Saturday BEFORE Thanksgiving]. It's a good way to visit and see a partial area of the historic ranch and enjoy a breakfast of coffee, juice, eggs, sausage, beans, and tortillas in an outdoor, ranch-hand, atmosphere!!! We've attended several times, and depending on the weather, Bud and I may go again this year. Not only the breakfast that is attended by thousands from around the Coastal Bend, there are exhibits and live music, along with cattle roping in the arena. A lot for $6!!! It's been a couple of years since we've been...

As I was sitting on the patio bench, letting the water drizzle slowly on the potted hibiscus tree, a small leaf fell and touched my lips before it landed on the hand rail...reminded me of the Nat King Cole song..."A Blossom Fell" and touched two lips that lied...it's no lie!!

For me, personally, I have no qualms about the Christmas Season Decor showing up in the shops/malls before Thanksgiving. Why not? Afterall, the boutiques, stores, shops, malls are there for us to enjoy the ambiance many-a-times, and they ARE there for one purpose; to bring in revenue. So, I say why not?   If you were in the shoes of retailers, you'd be doing the very same!!  I tend to have an open mind, I don't shut the door to thinking this is not right, to those who disagree, I have two words...Bah Humbug. In fact, since it's just the two of us at home now, we actually don't BUY, buy, buy...we just enjoy the festive surroundings and the hustle and bustle of the city shoppers. Anyway, the day we walked the mall for exercise, it was a cloudy, gloomy sorta day, and seeing all the bright, sparkling lights and the colossal tree in the very center corridor, my spirits were lifted.  The child in me was in awe.

PS...this is my last post for the upcoming week. Today, before I begin preparing for the special day Thursday next week, I will try and catch up on my visitors from yesterday, here in Blogville.  I don't plan on returning to my blogging schedule 'til Monday...after Thanksgiving.  I will, tho, have a pre-scheduled Birding Photo Link Tool set up for those birders that frequent my Photo Blog...so, if you're missin' me a bit...then, stop by to view the birds I've seen recently. . . at "I'd Rather B Birdin'"...or, if the link just provided doesn't work...it can also be found on my sidebar.  Erik is coming to be with us several days while his classes at the university are on holiday break. We expect to help him grade term test papers and have fun being together...over eating...playing games...and going on a few day trips close by. So, to all my American visitors, have a safe, blessed holiday. Enjoy the turkey and all the fixin's. Everyone else...have a great week ahead. See you in December.

    Thursday Thoughts

    § This week...

1] I read this headline on the news station's online section and thought..."Whoa!!! A man is about to give birth?"---
Woman Accused of Running Over Man Soon to Give Birth But, then, of course, I knew that was impossible, but the way it was constructed, it sure read oddly!!! After opening it...my curiosity got the better of me...it continued to become more clear: "The woman accused of fatally running over her common law husband is about to give birth to the man's child. On Thursday, she asked a judge to remove her GPS ankle monitor until she delivers...." Well now, that idea/plea is: Isn't it just kick-you-in-the-crotch, spit-on-your-neck fantastic? There comes to mind "if you do the crime, you do the time" or something to that effect. I know the innocence of the unborn child should be a factor,...the law is made for alleged criminals.

2] Hurricane season for 2013 is about to come to an end. This has been the 7th quietest year in the record 70 years of tracking. That doesn't mean all hell won't break loose next year. I fear that the lack of major storms puts people living in hurricane alley to become more lax, and think they're out of harm's way in the upcoming seasons. There were NO major hurricanes to hit land this year. None. At least in the United States. And the reasoning, I read, was very interesting. "Forecasters say that three main features loom large for the inactivity: large areas of sinking air, frequent plumes of dry, dusty air coming off the Sahara Desert, and above-average wind shear." The dry air trough, above the warm, subtropical air on land, kinda put the hipper-dipper to any formations. Of which I'm thankful. read more...

3] I drew another sketch. It is supposed to be Doc Holliday from the movie Tombstone, but hey...I'm not perfect. It is nowhere NEAR his likeness. [character played by Val Kilmer] Even so, I'll share it anyway:

4] Thinking about Thanksgiving already I am. Not sure quite yet if Erik plans on driving down here to be with us; from Houston. His hectic schedule these days puts a strain on any planning. Guess I'll just work around, making stuff and decorating etc....thinking he will come. If he doesn't, it won't be for naught, Bud and I will just be eating TONS of leftovers over the following days after the holiday. [snort] Even if the gas prices have dropped drastically, Bud and I [and maybe Erik] do not feel like taking our annual Thanksgiving trip. I don't know if it's laziness or just the lack of enthusiasm from driving anywhere. It will seem strange tho, since we've been doing a long weekend trip for several years, this time of year. Staying home isn't all that bad tho. Afterall, I AM a homebody.

5] Monday, I had my annual heart check up. Even with the episode a couple months ago with irregular heart beats and generic meds...the outcome was positive  --my annual EKG was 'perfect like the books show' says my doctor.  It just looked like some lines jumping up and down to me when he showed me.  Oh and my blood pressure AT THE DR's OFFICE was 120/80...wow. I don't think that's EVER happened...usually I am told I have white coat syndrome where at home my blood pressure is fairly  normal....until I have a doctor's appointment.  [insert wink]  . I'm doing well.  Also, this week, I am trying out a new 3 column formatted template for my blog.  Hoping it's not too wide for your screen resolution.  I just needed a 'different' thing since I tend to be here a lot viewing comments and replying to y'all.

1] CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) - Wednesday was the first full day of a new city ordinance banning drivers from handling their cell phones while driving in Corpus Christi. It's about time I say!!! Driving while making use of a cellphone to your ear is DANGEROUS to us all. READ it HERE

Long ago, for over 40 years now, the annual Albuquerque New Mexico Balloon Festival was quite a 'thing' to attend. But, admittedly, the balloons these days have evolved to a grand spectacle!!! They're becoming more amazing than ever!! Take a gander at this one: A peg legged parrot/pirate...

5] Since the Fall Classic [World Series] is nearing its premiere for 2013, I was reminded the other day that my parents met at a baseball game long, long, LONG ago. If you've checked out any of my shared links here on my personal blog, you have noticed my Poetry-Haiku link below. Here is where I've shared some of my written works. Today, thinking of my folks, and October and Baseball, I thought I'd share one of my poems. It's called Love Beckons True©

    LOVE BECKONS TRUE©

More than half a century their love was.

At a baseball game they met.
    Schoolmate and brother ushered acquaintance.

    Mother....
    Flaxen hair she had.
Blue eyes, glittering in the sun.
    Father asked his friend....
    Do you know her?
Sure! She's my sister, Mother's brother replied.
    I'll introduce her. But, wait.
Wait 'til the end of inning one.

    Mother...
    Flirtatious? Yes, indeed.....and, why not?
    Hmmmmm she thought. This guy,
a man of such competence, he's gotta be fun!
He was a find, what we can call hot!

    Father....
Dark hair parted in the middle. Dapper,
    dressed to the nines.

    Father & Mother....
Wow! This one, yes this one...
    He/She just hasta be mine.

    Love grew.

    Sacred vows were declared.

    Still.....

Life together was not always a ball game.
    Work mixed with laughter.
Hardships, good times, days mixed with tears.
The harder they worked, the more they laughed.
    And stronger their bond became.

    Years passed....

    I grew to adulthood.
Didn't acknowledge the affection they shared.
Too busy all wrapped up in myself.
No, I didn't bother. Never cared.

    As age turned into decades.
    I realized something dear.
Their life was spiritual, so vibrant.
    So true to each other.
    A union was pledged, unbroken.

    All too soon....

The dark hair parted in the middle
    and flaxen braids disappeared.
Even a paunch for a belly was seen.
Golden curls were replaced with silver strands.
Years passed, but their love remained keen.

    A third generation was created.
    Great grandchildren to indulge.
Warm hearts with open arms & devotion combine.
A house full of happiness, a room full
    of love. And...
Most of all, these parents are mine!

    Mother left.
    Father stayed a while longer.
His lonely heart couldn't handle the loss.
Or maybe in his mind what he felt, was blame.
    He left us shortly thereafter.
No more sorrow he was in.
    They're again eternally together.
Now watching us below, at our own "ball" game.

    And their daughter....?
    Gone are those days now.
I am told time heals all, tears shed in vain.
The loss will never leave me.
    This sorrow will always remain.
But I now, the one with no care,
    relive daily the memories galore.
Today, for me, their love was true.
With me, it will always be there.

    With great admiration
    and devotion....
    Your daughter, Anni
