§ Quilting, and drawing, and government..oh my!!

  • Watched a video this week that I wanted to see in the theater a long time ago but never did. "Take the Lead" starring Antonio Banderas. According to the beginning credits, this was based on a true story. About kids, troubled kids, who became a goal of sorts for the dance teacher [Banderas] to help them out by teaching them to dance. It was a typical movie; very predictable, but still a good family movie. It is more about the kids of "Harlem" in NYC, but the story, the story is also about the teacher...a dance instructor. Wikipedia has this:
Pierre Dulaine (born 23 April 1944)[1] is a well-known ballroom dancer and dance instructor. He invented the Dulaine method of teaching dance. He also developed Dancing Classrooms, a social development program for 5th grade children that uses ballroom dancing as a vehicle to change the lives of the children and their families. Notably, his early works with children was fictionalized in the film Take the Lead, starring Antonio Banderas as Pierre Dulaine.
Pierre Dulaine being the teacher of course. The DVD was found in the $5 bin at Walmart. It'll be one we trade in, but it was worth watching a one time.
  • It went like this...:::crash:::
"Oh man-n-n-n!" "It's probably busted." "Yep! I need a new one...."
    Bud inquires: "What happened now?"
"The blender just fell onto the floor after I washed it by hand!!" "The base of the pitcher shattered...look at all the pieces on the floor."
As Bud helps pick up the shards [even flew across the room near the garage door into the litter box]...smirking, he asks: "How did that happen?"
    "It just fell!"
"You should watch more carefully what you're doing Anni."

After the mess was cleaned up, Bud started to clean his coffee pot carafe since there was hot soapy water in the sink from my cleaning chore.

    :::bang:::

    "Dammit"
I come back into the kitchen, "What happened now?"
"I hit the sink rim with the glass pot, and it cracked."
In disbelief, I thought right away, "Irish Luck", but I think I was quoted saying "You should watch more carefully what you're doing..."

We had to make a trip to buy a new coffee pot and a new food blender before the next day's breakfast hour!!
  • Bought the batting for my quilt project. Pieced together a back side for the quilt. I added a hand cut witch's hat on the back quilt piece. On the panel with the little girl witch that instigated this whole project were some extras on the side of the panel...some Jack o Lanterns, bats, and a crooked, twisted witch's hat....I cut out the witch hat, one of the jack-o-lanterns, and pinned it on my back panel and 'appliqued' it with the machine in orange. All the front blocks are sewn, the batting is on the floor all stretched out...will begin the sewing after a few days' quilting hiatus. I find it better, if I take a day or two away, the project doesn't seem so demanding. Besides, working on the floor getting this all together takes a toll on the back muscles I forgot I had!!
  • During the days away from working on the quilt, I finished another bird sketch that I started a couple weeks ago after I drew the woodpecker. This time it's an American Redstart. I remember the first time I saw one in the wild. I was walking around the Audubon Society's preserved Oak Motte on the island near Packery Channel, and I saw this black and orange small bird fly from the outer branches deep into the motte. It never came back out. I didn't know what bird species it was as I had never seen the likes of it before!! For longer than a year's time I never saw one, again, 'til this past Spring!! I got several photos of the male [they're the black and orange ones] along with his mate...she is grey and yellow! Anyway, I wanted to draw one. They are beautiful. Of the warbler family I believe, and very flitty, busy, and one of the most difficult birds to photograph; never staying still long enough to get a proper focus on the camera. The male is so very handsome with its dark black plumage on its backside with bright red-orange in its tail feathers and partial breast...while the belly is near a pure white. When courting, the male and female fan out their remarkably beautiful tail feathers to display their breeding colors. Here is a link to the Ornithology website of bird IDs. And, here is my completed sketch [obviously I added a bit of red-orange colored pencil to my sketch this time 'round to match some of its coloration] ...

  • Speaking of witches-------I've been waiting on pins and needles all summer, actually an entire year from last August...waiting for August to arrive at Tuesday Morning! Each year, this store, after putting the Spring and Summer goodies on an unbelievable mark-down, make room for their Autumn, Winter [Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas] items to go up on their shelves. Yes, I know...some of you think it's way too early for this. I don't! And I'm one of those that shows up at the store front waiting patiently for the opening hour. [well, I'm not that much of a nut-case, but awfully close] Anyway, I ended up at the store early one morning as it's across the street from a Walmart [and yes, Shelly, these both are located in the Staples Street construction area! LOL] where I had to get some cat litter. I walked in and saw no Autumn stuff...I was in shock...nothing in the front of the store that even pertained to Fall or Halloween!! Ack!!! But, as I turned the corner to the aisle they usually display them, the witches called my name!!! "Anni!! So glad to see you again." I bought four. I tellya, last year we went in the middle of August and the witches were either sold out, or not much to choose from: The early bird........... I got pictures of my quad witch group, but I'll refrain from postin' them so soon.
  • Any baseball fans out there? What do you think of the NYY's fiasco with Alex Rodriguez? All I know is, the Yankees really suck this year!! What happened? They really should just kick A-Rod and his ultra-ego out of baseball for life and get on with playing ball!!!
  • By the way, for more than just a few months, I've been following the civil rights movement of our government/president -our American right to bear arms for protection of our property and lives...and I hafta admit...I'm all for this:

The national movement called "Come and Take it America".

Those who agree with taking our gun rights away should remember:
    1. Guns set us free from the English Monarchy [Revolutionary War}
    2. The war of 1812, and the Spanish American War
    3. Guns set Texas free from Mexico...[The Alamo]
    4. Guns freed slaves from bondage
    5. Guns set us free from: The threat of Hitler, Japan, Middle East, etc. etc.
    6. The use of a gun [locally] protected a young boy from being shot by intruders that murdered his parents in a prominent neighborhood...not just the poor where violence is a given and oftentimes wrong. But this is not about violence and gun violence...it's about the freedom to bear guns, not to have that right taken away because of what happened in Colorado, Texas, Arizona, California or any given area of America...it's about the right to carry a weapon for protection.
    7. I admit, I'm scared to death of all the wrongs done with guns in the hands of some...The shootings in Houston and the colleges and universities just recently where my son teaches political science...a subject that could easily instigate an act of violence and random shootings. But, my son is a proud American, as am I, and our fore-fathers gave us this right to protect ourselves * in other words the 2nd amendment adopted in the 1700s is all about this "...a right, supporting the natural rights of self-defense, resistance to oppression, and the civic duty to act in concert in defense of the state..."
  • Taking away the right to bear arms/owning guns is NOT going to stop mass killings!! Look what happened with airplanes...9/11...is an airplane now considered a weapon then? And if I may, for those of us that know killing is wrong, I ask: What about all the killing by the hand of God? i.e., In Genesis 19:28 [turning Lot's wife into a pillar of salt] - the entire city of Sodom and Gomorrah in the book of Genesis - then there is, by the hand of God and his fire, hundreds of people burned [Numbers 16:35]- oh and flooding; killing many people AND animals ---to me, even with the commandment thou shall not kill ---seems a bit "do as I say not as I do". Murder and mayhem occurs in history [even the Good Book], fiction and non-fiction...it's a fact of life, and part of human nature---and it's not ALWAYS from the actions and repercussions from a gun.
  • Now, to abate the debatable here from my bill of rights fragment, I wanted to leave you on a much more fun frag.... Scenes from Goose Island near Capano Bay, in South Texas...the beautiful sky and the 'white hot' sunshine of summer, the sea coast, the shadows, the cooler temps of a shaded pathway and park bench...

  • § Merry...ummm, Holidays?

1] There seems to be a big 'push' in Blogland about the term "Happy Holidays" vs. "Merry Christmas". I read at least once a day in blog posts or comments something like this: "What happened to 'Merry Christmas'?"  Or:  "What happened to the "CHRIST" in Christmas?" Nothing, actually. It's just that saying "Happy Holidays" as a greeting means treating everyone equally rather than showing favoritism towards just those who celebrate Christmas. Christmas is just one day during December. Personally, I see absolutely nothing wrong with the salutation given to someone you don't know; 'Happy Holidays'. Which religion are they? Sure, for Christians Merry CHRISTmas is apropos. But, all in this world are not Christians. Yet, you want to be friendly towards one another throughout....right? An upstanding citizen of anywhere in the world is supposed to love thy neighbor. At least that is the way I was brought up. Loving the neighbor [either next door, next state, or a whole 'nother country]...so, in my way of thinking, wishing someone Happy Holidays is perfectly fitting. And more respectful in terms of being the kind human and being that we all should be. When you don't know for sure what a person is celebrating, I ask....what is so terrible about giving them a smile along with a warm "Happy Holidays"? The season is not only about Christmas...it's Hanukkah, Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, New Year's Eve, and probably more that I can't recall as I type this...the month of December is a 'holiday season'. And yet some don't observe anything, period. If a good person is what we're supposed to be...friendly and loving and kind and giving --- I, as you can see by my blog,  observe Christmas---then trying to be less single minded,  I can try to be unselfish in my thinking, and realize that the holiday season, the month of December, is not all Christian.

2] I want GRIMM and NCIS back!    LOL ---For Grimm, I read online that the continuing episodes are not going to return to regular scheduling until March 8th?!!! That's a long 3 months to wait to see what happens after the cliffhanger in November of 2012?!!!

3] One more week 'til my sister arrives in Texas for a couple weeks with Bud and me!!

4]  I'm looking forward to the upcoming release of Les Miserables movie, starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway. It opens Christmas Day, but I doubt we'll not go see it in the theater 'til after my sister and b-i-l go back to Colorado. I especially look forward to seeing a favorite British celebrity --- Eddie Redmayne. He was so good in his role of the mini-series, Pillars of the Earth and then, Stafford in the Other Boleyn Girl and Thomas Babington in Elizabeth the Golden Age.  I predict some Oscar nominations for actors/actresses/movie.

5] Speaking of Les Miserables...with my eyesight not being what it was years ago,  the book by Hugo  would be too difficult to read 'cause of such small print in the huge volume!! But, I'm now able to read it with a Kindle Reader!! And large print!! Been reading it this last week --- on the cold days. Cold? Yes indeedy. One day this week the low was in the 40s. I like it!!

6] Here's Eddie Redmayne by the way [sweet!! just look at those freckles! those eyes!  that tousled hair!]  I realize he's young enough to be my son, but whoa.  Heck, Demi Moore can do it --guess I can dream.  I dreamed a dream....:

    SHOW N TELL

Okay, tell me....just how LONG have Bud and I lived in this house in Texas? Yep, going on seven years!! And I had a revelation!! Of the close-encounter type! Bring on the National Enquirer...no, on second thought, don't tell ANYone. But, realize you saw it here first. I really don't want those overzealous religious 'freaks' showing up in our neighborhood and blocking the streets and driveways, searching for a religious phenomenon that will save us all. But wait, I still want to share this with those who visit me today looking for a show n tell post. A while ago, several days, weeks ago in fact, when I opened our garage door to get the car backed out, I walked around the backside of the car to get into the driver's seat. And, yes, a squirrel scurried down the trunk of the pecan tree which made me look up because of the commotion. The light of day was just right...and the vision caught my eye immediately!! Once I noticed it, Bud was at his work bench in the garage and I told him he had to come look. Hoping he'd see the same as I did, I pointed it out to him with words only; where he was to look without pointing directly to it and not giving him any clue as to what I saw. Sure 'nough, he saw it too. Being that we now know where to look, we continued to seek it out at different times of day on different days. Come early daylight or dusk, cloudy or sunny...he keeps his vigil over our house and yard. And it only took us over 6 years to see it----------

Do YOU see him, tho primitive as it may be?

...if not, I colored in the feature[s] in the bark of the tree to assist you. Look at the primitive outlining I did, and compare with the above, natural, setting. Does it not look like Jesus Christ's image?---

§ 'nother rant of mine. something I need to get posted---

Long, long ago, [and I've written about this incident before on my blog in short] something was said to me in a conversation that I will NEVER forget!!! The other person who was talking with me, said: "All the homosexuals will, and should go to hell". I got up, walked away from her and remained speechless. Yet, throughout the day, I was fuming. Afterall, I was in a workplace, and I didn't want to make a scene. But as the day wore on, I opened up with the wrath I felt within myself, that was tearing at my gut for the hours that passed. I let her have a piece of my mind. I recall getting into her face within inches and called her a self-righteous bitch! Yes indeed. I felt better, and I continued through a few more years before Bud bought out his early retirement, working with the very same gal. Tho, from the moment the word came from my lips, we no longer were friends we had been before; just co-workers. To this day, it still eats away at my gut...one who has such a low mentality, one who has no warrant to decree such a standing of others in such a way. If anyone chooses the gay lifestyle, in all this, in my own mind and my own perspectives, I will accept anyone who will be broad-minded enough to not preach and condemn others of their way of living...I feel judgment is not up to you or me, not us as a society. Of course, in all respect here, I did call names myself; I was just as guilty calling her 'bitch'. Hey, in my way of thinking, even tho some will say a man laying with a man as a he lays with a woman---found in Leviticus....it's wrong. Well, in the Bible, divorce is wrong also...but we, as a society, accept divorce as a part of life these days and think nothing of it. Not to mention all of the ten commandments being broken every minute of the day. But.....

In the most recent past, there have been a lot of teen suicides...it tears me apart. Because, again, the self-righteous who practice the word of love and good...can turn around and condemn as if they WERE god!!

Of course, this is a long video, but I felt the torture all gays go through...and, I wish they'd become more accepted, without discrimination, and if one viewer watches it in its entirety and changes their outlook on what society is doing to them, I feel I've accomplished something....SOON, before more suicides.

As always, with a post of my own humble opinions and strong emotions on subjects such as this, I turn off commenting.

    MACRO MONDAY

A broken sand dollar in the grasp of seaweed. Newport beach access on Mustang Island, Texas. The smaller, whole dollar, I found near Padre Island National Seashore on, yep....Padre Island, Texas

Most often while beachcombing you'd find them broken like the macro photo above, but when lucky you may find one whole. The Sand Dollar. Sand-dollar is a name used for many species of extremely flattened, burrowing sea urchins. Seldom you may chance upon one not so 'flat' as these above. If so, they're then called sea biscuits. FROM wikipedia: ...the typical remains found washed up on beaches [the skeletal remains, the hardened sandy outer "shell", is called TEST]. The living animals have a skin of motile spines covering the test. Movement is accomplished by the coordinated action of the spines. Like other sea urchins, sand dollars have five paired rows of pores. The pores are arranged in a petal-like pattern. These pores are perforations in the endoskeleton through which the podia, used in gas exchange, project from the body. Each 'flowerette' petal arrangement is as different as a finger print! To see a sand dollar urchin that is still living and breathing....click HERE

    MONDAY MORSELS

Well, baseball season has come to a close. The regular season that is. Of course as you can tell with the lack of commentary on my part, the one team I follow in Texas [The Astros] didn't do well at all. In the middle of the season, two 'star' players were traded. One went on to the Phillies, and the other went on to the Yankees. The pitcher that was traded to the Phillies faired well, while the other, the 1st baseman...well, let's just say he was booed off the field at the Yankee stadium once. LOL Anyway, the 'home' team for me...the Colorado Rockies held promise there for a while...I was quite thrilled, then---bam!! Only 3rd place in their division at the end of the season. And the Arizona Diamondbacks? Well...let me tell you, they were so disappointing. At one time during the season, the schedules and playing skills just reeked with rot!! And the owner was fed up with the mess and fired the whole shebang...the whole coaching staff that is. Much to my dismay, the team players didn't improve throughout the remaining season. I always get disgusted with the high paying wages they earn and give us fans nothing to show for supporting them. And I continually say "There's always next year"...but, pfffft!! How many 'next years' are there? The only team I really root for in the American League is the New York Yankees [I'm a die-hard National League Supporter when it comes to being pitted against each other during the interleague games and World Series...unless it involves the Yankees]....they, at least, are going to be in the play-off season. Yet, I've seen 'em play better in other times. Still, there is hope. The Fall Classic will be upon us shortly, and I'll be there watching....hoping the Yankees will be part of another history in baseball!!! Then, I'll be counting the days 'til Spring Training in 2011 while 'suffering' through another losing season of my football home team, the Denver Broncos. Maybe the Houston Texans have a chance? LOL Pro'lly not.

    to change the subject:

Between emails with another blogging friend, we shortly discussed the fact that Muslims are exempt from the healthcare with our present president. It irks me to no end that Christians cry wolf on this. Let me reiterate that if anyone who is sore on this subject and believe in their own religion...let me also make note to you that they are not the only ones who are exempt!!! Do some research before backstabbing people!!! Amish, Christian Science, and the Church of Christ are among others. America was built on religious freedoms. I also point out that the churches of this country are TAX exempt...is that fair to anyone who owns property and pay their property taxes? No, but it is still a fact. Some say they fear the extremists. Think about it...your own neighbor, be they black or white or any religious denomination [or atheists] could easily go ballistic and terrorize the neighborhood. Heck, if you think about it...if the twin towers were 'attacked' by a Christian group of Mexican descent, or a Brit maybe, would that mean that they're ALL terrorists? I try not to judge people...but when others decry people's beliefs I have to rant. It always seems that god-loving Christians are the first to claim everyone else's religions are wrong. I don't understand how they think sometimes....I just don't understand.

    5. What's your favorite TV show this season? I need a new show! :) I faithfully watch only two...NCIS [which the season opener left a lot to be desired.] And, Big Bang Theory...omg...it was a bit on the risque side for the season opener, but well done to not disturb anyone. At least I think.

    SUNDAY'S SUMMARY

Remember what you learned when just a little one? Y'know? Make a fist with your fingers entwined below in the palm of your hand...and your recited as you pulled your two index fingers up..."Here's a church, here's a steeple....open the door and see all the people"...as you twist your wrists up and all the remaining fingers wiggle to show 'people'? Here is a 10 second video of the little ditty---

    Do you remember that?

Well, as Bud and I were doing our morning walking on a Sunday [he goes with me on Sunday's for sure...sometimes once or twice a week otherwise when we go to the beach.] Anyway, while walking along the Shoreline Drive on the Marina/Yacht Club area a couple weeks ago, I happen to look toward the city instead of the bay waters because the sound of church bells rang out to us while we were down below the bluff...and I was scanning the panorama; seeing all the church steeples. I, personally, like the more 'Gothic' architecture...the old world style; and the Southwest "mission" architecture --or even the unadorned, wooden, 1 room "prairie churches" as apposed to the modern designs of today---there ARE churches just about every city block in this city...we ARE in the Bible Belt!!

This is for you: Madi [and Mom!]--------

This is the one that had the chiming from the bell tower....notice the black arrow?---I've always wanted to stop the car and photograph the bronze statue, but the traffic sometimes - it's too dangerous to pull over and snap photos. So, while we were walking, I crossed the boulevard [from the sea's side] and took close up photos of the statue---

These photos below are ones you'd see from the shore...but they're all up on a bluff in about a three block radius. The upper bluff and street is Upper Broadway. From the entry doors of these churches you'd see the views of the bay and the bayfront. The first one, the one with the whitewashed stairway to the top of the hill is the Catholic Church---

As for today, Sunday, it's still soggy outdoors in the yard, and we still have a lot of landscaping repair to do once it dries out more. Our huge Lantana bush was literally pounded to the ground. Once it dries out some around it's roots, we'll have to tie it up and support it against the privacy fence to 'retrain' it and make it a bit more sturdy. A few landscaping timbers were washed out from the foundation flower boxes in the front yard. While I was out in the storm I happened to notice a couple 6 foot timbers floating across the yard toward the flooded street and lugged them back retrieved them placing them on the front porch. But, again, it's still a bit too wet to be out there doing the repair work....so, it'll have to wait. Bud played plumber this week....Joe the Plumber!! Showing me his butt crack once while on his knees sopping up the leak as I was supervising. rofl I did another teeny Halloween project for the entry door and finished that in no time flat. I FINALLY completed reading the book "The Further Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"!!!! It sure was a slow read. But enjoyable. Enough for me to WANT to finish it, but just not so 'exciting' that I never wanted to put it down. It was a thick novel...and I was only reading a few pages every once in a while. It sure took me long enough to finish it. Now I started reading The Queen's Governess... which 'sounds' of great interest to me 'cause I really enjoy this chronicled era. And historical novels of such always catch my eye at the book store; this book was on my book list to buy. I was lucky enough to find it at the half price bookstore!! I've read the first few chapters and being written in 'first person' always makes it so good for me. I've not read any of Karen Harper's books before 'til this one. Usually, on this subject I'd prefer Phillipa Gregory or Alison Weir novels. So far, so good tho. She may just become another of my favorite writers. Time will tell. The novel is about Elizabeth I's governess...placed there in Henry VIII's court by Thomas Cromwell after the days of Anne Boleyn's beheading, Katherine Ashley. Altho not much has ever been written on Miss Ashley, an imaginative epic should hold relevance. Online, I found this written in a quotation from the author: "The movie rights to Queen’s Governess have been sold in the UK, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Turkey. Harper says the time is ripe for another Tudor blockbuster like the Cate Blanchett Elizabeth films or Shakespeare in Love. Or, it could be adapted for television to provide fresh look at the popular characters of Showtime’s The Tudors." I say, whoo hoo!!! As I love MOVIES of this time in history also!! Hope it comes out in America soon.

    § all kinds-a wrong....MHO

    ...this is wrong!
    September 11th 2001-2010
    It's insanity
    It's degrading
It's self righteous b------- like this
    that ruin the world!!

    read here

Once again, the media covers and hypes up wrong-doings to the point it's over-saturated and the 'culprits' are getting air time and press to boast their egos and insanity to an extreme...which in this case, it is just plain degrading of the Christian religion AND Americans who are more forgiving than some. I must apologize for name calling...but this?!! -I'm normally one who 'lets live'...but this is one instance on which I can't keep my mouth shut. It's insane and so troubling and dangerous to do. I think of the histories of Ku Klux Klan ---when I was growing up, it was Russians and Communists...today it's Arabs and Muslims...and other many troubling times we've seen in our country; and I know all too well the hatred still exists...so many instances that makes me think this guy is not thinking like a Christian should, and making the entire nation suffer for his outburst of defiance. People who think like this one preacher, ones who call themselves good upstanding Christians; well they're not!!! I just hope that if this does take place, that the media -in any shape or form- doesn't cover the issue and it's not televised or photographed. Oh the consequences this just may cause for our troops and our country. And as I've stated many many times, you just don't mix political media coverage and religion........ever, and no good will come from it!!! It's an American right tho, he does have that right to do what he wants as long as there is no physical harm done...but oh I just can't help say...there were Muslims [And they ARE Americans!] who lost their lives on Sept 11th...one comes to mind, a fireman in NYC who died saving others...his body was found in the rubble, he was still holding the medic bag!!! Those who died on Ground Zero --of Arab descent. And while I'm on this 'touchy' subject, I have to ask..."If the terrorists from 9/11 were Americans that provoked and harmed us-- volumes of harm and strife...and they wanted to build a church of some sect of Christianity near ground zero like the proposed mosque...would there be such an uproar?" Again, the good, and upstanding - - fighting this all the way, or are they? I think it's doing more harm than good...it's not accomplishing anything but instigating more fighting and wars. What happened to turning the other cheek? or vengeance is mine say-eth the lord? Or part of the lord's prayer....forgive those that trespass against us.

Now this morning I read that the event is canceled. True? Why was it even planned to begin this fiasco? It's against good judgment and not Christian-like in the first place! What kind of man and preacher/pastor is he?

Comments are shut off on this post as I'm not after what anyone's opinion is on this, I just wanted to rant on the ordeal.

§ Favorites come and go...but this one remains---

Religion isn't something I feel comfortable sharing, with so many readers. I feel it's sincerely something that you either hold dear to your heart and soul, or you don't wish to discuss it at all...both reasons apply to me. I don't like being preached to by others who's beliefs and thoughts are not mine alone. But y'all know I love art. Since today is Sunday, the Sabbath to Christians, I thought I'd write a little bit of my favorite piece of artwork depicting the theme of religion. Ever since childhood, I remember a large painting of my mother's. She had it on the wall next to her bedside along with a table and her Bible. Today, I still have her very worn Bible, but I don't know what happened to the painting. It was a reproduction of course, of the famous work by Henrich Hofmann. A German painter who painted Christ at Gethsemane in the late 1800s. Tho I don't have one of the same, I must say it remains my favorite painting with the religious theme. Oftentimes I thought of painting one in an attempt to get one like mom's. I loved the muted colors with my mother's piece. Many times I've looked online to find one that is the same color tones. I've searched through artwork at antique stores, looking for something ever so similar to her's. Through the years, nothing has ever surfaced that is close. But, as I said above, it remains my favorite painting, and some day I may find one that is done in the muted tones like on the site about the artist....
        From Wikipedia:
Four of the most famous works of Hofmann are in the possession of the Riverside Church in New York: Christ and the Rich Young Ruler, Christ in Gethsemane, Christ in the Temple and Picture of Christ. According to information of the Riverside Church, the painting Christ in Gethsemane is without much doubt one of the most copied paintings in the world. The religious body of Hofmann’s work has gained in importance in the past years. One of the reasons for the increasing popularity of his artwork is the publication of his paintings and pencil drawings depicting the life of Jesus Christ in The Second Coming of Christ, the interpretation of the Bible by Paramahansa Yogananda, the teacher of Yoga. Heinrich Hofmann was one of the pre-eminent painters of his time. The Sunday Strand – at that time a very popular British magazine– describes him as the most influential contemporary German painter. Hofmann’s style of painting was unique in its own way but at the same time he based his work on the traditional art of old German, Dutch and Italian masters. While in Rome he also came in touch with the Nazarenes – especially through the influence of Cornelius – but throughout his life he remained faithful to the great examples of the Renaissance. Religious paintings take the center stage in Hofmann’s work; but he also created numerous portraits and pictures that depict mythological and historical topics.

Monday Morsels for me is where I choose to voice a thought that drifts through my days at certain times---today, being so close to our National Holiday of Independence, I choose to rant on this subject...this is quite opinionated, and no doubt, viewed by some as offensive. I guess that's the true nature of blogging....

If you, as an American, choose to omit the two words Under God in your recital of the Pledge of Allegiance, are you less American than those who say the words? I don't think so! Just like if you and your betrothed choose to marry in a courtroom or by a judge....instead of through the church. In the "eyes of the Lord"....you're just as married either way!!! [Did you know that the traditional words spoken..."do you take thee....as your lawful wedded spouse" are NOT in the Bible, but in the Book of Common Prayer?!!]

Sorry, the marriage vows are not what this post is about.

There is always controversy on the American Pledge of Allegiance to our country. [click here - pledge of allegiance scroll down to Supreme Court 1947] We actually have, in schools, in courtrooms, in assemblies, before Congress...etc. etc. etc. recited the Allegiance. Yet, it's been quoted over and over so many times, the actual meaning has been lost to some. It's not about a nation 'under God'...but about a country and your loyalty to the country!! The controversy of course is the words "Under God". Now, in my own opinion, that is not necessarily something that needs debate. It's a personal preference to chose one way or the other. Those two words were NOT part of the original. For me, it's the ardor and dedication to the land on which we live!! Your God is forgiving...why can't the laymen be so forgiving also?!! In America there ARE different religious households...even atheist households. The pledge is dedicating ourselves to our country only. And don't get me wrong...it's the controversy...it's the controversy that I don't understand. It should be right in the way you choose to pledge...with the words, OR WITHOUT. We're pledging our bond, our obedience, our patriotism...to the land!! Just my thought. When we say the first line "I pledge allegiance to the flag"...it's "I promise my loyalty to the emblem; the symbol of freedom"
Originally it was written in 1892 by a minister of God no less...the words were as follows: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Simple, short and concise.
The next lines in today's pledge are: "...of the United States of America." These words were added!! After the original. In 1923. And of course those words are self-explanatory. United States...the union that is united as one...
In 1923: " I pledge allegiance to my flag of the United States, and to the Republic for which it stands...one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
The next year [1924] it again was rewritten to this:
"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
The words of honor, the pledge, were not sanctioned until 1942 by Congress. And the words have been murmured throughout its history. No mention of diety until President Eisenhower, with World War II in our daily strife, was the "Under God" added...his quotation: "...in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country's most powerful resource in peace and war." We are pledging ourselves to our country only...in history, those initial 23 words; now composed of 31. Indivisible!! --demonstrates the unity, as one country. Liberty!! -- being afforded that freedom. of choice in pledging allegiance to the land upon which we live. And, Justice!! --each person entitled to be treated justly, fairly, and according to proper law and principle. If you don't believe in a God, or don't agree with those two words, I don't feel it's sacrilege...and, I know in my heart many will disagree ...it's just two words...say them, or don't...we can still pledge our union; no matter. America, to me, is NOT about your religious beliefs, it's about freedoms...the right to believe or not....it's purely individual and that is what our country is about...religious freedoms among so many other freedoms we take for granted. I could not and would not tell anyone...ANYONE...to say those two words "Under God" 'or else'- .............because it is not my right to question them in the first place. In the song composed and recorded by Lee Greenwood, he says "And the flag still stands for freedom, and they can't take that away". So many of us respond to a question: "What would you like to see?"...they're response is "World Peace"...how can that ever happen when there is no peace within yourself as a believer or nonbeliever? As John Lennon once said: "Imagine...it's easy if you try." I'm really not too sure if any of that I just typed makes sense at all. But, these thoughts over and over especially in today's times, go through me rampantly too often when the people of this country call others 'wrong' if they believe differently than how I was or you were raised, it's about America's freedoms.

photos off my camera, taken of the flag flies day and night above the American Bank complex in downtown Corpus Christi and the wildflower was in our lawn.

Now that I've riled some nerves, I'm sure...I'll add a little bit of humor mixed in....

    - - -A visitor from Holland was chatting with his American friend and was jokingly explaining about the red, white and blue in the Netherlands flag. "Our flag symbolizes our taxes," the man said. "We get red when we talk about them, white when we get our tax bill, and blue after we pay them." "That’s the same with us," the American said, "only we see stars, too."

    - - -Adam was returning home late one night. When Eve confronted him. "You are seeing another woman, aren't you?" she accused. "Don't be silly," he replied. "You are the only woman on earth."Later that night Adam woke up feeling a tickle on his chest. "What the hell are you doing?" he asked Eve. "What do you think?" she asked. "I am counting your ribs."
