§ Nature's Glory...

It's been glorious these past few days.  Much cooler and much drier than this past few months of summer.  Ya, only 3 months of summer, I know, but living in the sub-tropics it seems like an eternity of heat and humidity.  I'm glad to say...it is much improved.  I can breathe, I can walk without sweating the minute I step outside.  I thought I'd share some of the beauty that surrounded me the last few weeks.

One day, the sun peeking through the clouds as I walked the trail...

I search for anything that has hearts. I was going to save this photo for my birding blog, but since it also has a heart shape in the image, I'd share it with both of my blogs. Do you see it* in the image below? This is a photo of an Inca Dove perched in a tree near a drip fountain in a park about a 20 minute drive from Corpus.

§ Birding Texas 101

Y'all know by now, that when I take my day trippin' travels and share photos, my main purpose is to head to my destination to tally my steps for the day and to take in some birding. Well, over the last year, I have taken, literally, tens of thousands of photos of birds. Some, I have shared on my bird photo blog, while others,  saving them for record keeping. My record keeping is just that...each photo is dated, so when I go back into my archived folders, I know which birds are in my area in that month. Some migrate of course, while most are year 'round residents of South Texas. I thought I'd take one photo from each month's photo record and publish them on Day Trippin' for a change of pace. These frames were added before I changed the template, eliminating my blog's sidebar, and redesigned the frame to a simpler one. [I also have chosen twelve for 'nature' of each month in 2019 to be published at a later date]. Here goes. Birds for the month of:

January 2019 - Brown Pelican

February 2019 - Crested Caracara

March 2019 - White Winged Dove

April 2019 - Reddish Egret

[below, is a white morph, there is a dark morph also which is aptly named and more common.] This particular white morph is in breeding colors. Note the pink and blue on the face...just when breeding. Also, the open wing stance is called a canopy and is believed they do this when hunting for food to shade the water surface for better visibility.  Guide books and websites will tell you this is the only bird that will canopy when feeding, but I have seen egrets doing the very same, and have recorded it with photo proof.  Did the egrets evolve to this behavior also?

May 2019 - Chipping Sparrow

June 2019 - Fledging Northern Mockingbird

July 2019 - Northern Cardinal in molt.  Molting takes place after breeding and takes weeks to regrow new feathers.

August 2019 -Tri-colored Heron

September 2019 - Great Blue Heron

October 2019
- Summer Tanager
This is a female, the male is all red. Sometimes sighted are dappled yellow, orange and red...the dappled is anywhere from 1 year to adult plumage.

November 2019 - Green Jay
Interesting fact - I kinda secretly tend to call this the "mockingbird of the jay family". If not careful, you may think you hear a hawk [or several other bird calls, sometimes it sounds like a cat's meow] calling from the trees, then to discover it is the green jay!!  They are only seen in South Texas, rare sightings.  Mainly a bird of Old Mexico.

December 2018 - Herring Gull
Herring Gulls are one of few gulls that have yellow eyes. There are literally dozens of different gulls around Texas, and sometimes, if lucky, a rogue from another part of the States or Caribbean will visit. At first, they're difficult to ID at times unless you know specific anatomy and colors to associate.  For instance wing markings, eye color, leg color, size, breeding colors, bill shape and markings, like the ring billed gull.  Guess what?  It has a ring around its bill!

[Corpus Christi had a Bar-Tailed Godwit show up in our parks and bay area... from Britain, a few years back.  And birders were literally FLOCKING -pun intended- to our town with tripods, cameras and binoculars; from all over USA and close by foreign lands.  Of course, I was too]  Bud, at times, went with me to help locate it among the local godwits ... and once he made reference to the showing of so many 'crazy' bird watchers it was like the movie [based on a non-fiction book of the same title] The Big Year -starring Steve Martin and other well-known names.  It was, and oftentimes is just exactly like the movie.  If you've never seen the movie it's a good one.  Fun, funny, educational, well written and directed.  And if you do decide to watch it, you will see a bit of me in it too.  Not physically, but me as one of those fanatic birders.

§ Double Your Pleasure

Going through my photo folders, I spotted several 'doubles'. By that I mean, some object or thing that has TWO in the image. Does that make any sense? Okay, whatever. You'll get the meaning after you scroll to view!!

Like the old-time commercial for Wrigley's gum. I played with the words a bit...
Double your pleasure
Double your fun
With double this
and double that
They are doubled; every one!

Night Blooming Epiphylum and Variegated Leaf Hibiscus [hybrid]

Double Duck Dip and my Wooden Ball Snowman/Santa Elves that I made a couple years ago.  I took three wooden balls, one large for the body and one smaller ball for the head, even a third, very tiny ball for the nose...painted them, decorated them with eyes, pipes [I used fish line and curled the line, for pipe smoke]. fake fur for the beards, felt for hats and trimmed with yarn and 'snow' glitter, yarn pom poms.

Two Turtle Doves INCA DOVES without a Pear Tree

American Avocets [no this IS a color photo -they're black and white birds in non breeding plumage]

Killdeer Duo

Two Palms ... on a Sunday.  If I need to explain "Palm Sunday" then....well, forget it.  lol

Least Grebes in a Pond

Sail Boat and Yacht

TWO Baby Black Bellied Whistling Ducks!!  [from a group of eight siblings]

Boots and Bags....the two resident alligators in the reserve

Duo-ling Truckers

TWO 'double' delights - Texas Wildflowers [yellow is Mexican Hat and purple is, I believe, Horsenettle]

I have several more - I'll post another set soon...in double time!!

§ ...in the Back Yard

All weekend, I have had to resort to the cellphone for internet access. The desktop computer and the cable connection worked only a minute or two at a time, then would lose network contact. Today [Monday] a technician from the cable company will be here to hopefully find out what the problem is, and get it fixed!! In the meantime, I am up early and the modem is working so I'll get this post published, but I will probably not be able to repay a visit to the commentors 'til the problem is resolved. OR use the teeny-tiny cellphone monitor which isn't the BEST solution!  Besides, the phone is much slower than cable.

Early in the morning just after the sun rises and before leaving the house for the day, I've been trying to keep a sharp eye...and listen for a certain bird that showed up in our yard this week. It's a special bird, and I was hoping that it would return to the feeding stations.  I've seen it for two mornings now, but by the time I get the camera turned on and trying to focus on it...it flies away!  I'm gonna be diligent and keep trying...and hoping. In the meantime, while wishing to get a photo of the bird, I ended up going outdoors and I walked around the back yard taking photos to keep the camera on without it shutting down 'automatically'....just in case the bird happened by again while I was outside. Then, getting out of the heat, I sat by the patio window in the air conditioned room with the blinds open;  a bunch of sparrows [seen in the photo to the left, two juvenile house sparrows] and a white winged dove arrived at the seed [below, scroll down]...The special bird never returned....it was a female leucistic cardinal!!!  In the meantime....our back yard:

HEALTH/cardiologist appointment UPDATE
Arriving at the cardiologist's office 15 minutes early, I sat in the waiting room after signing in. Waited some more, and waited, and waited and waited. How do they expect you to have a good blood pressure reading when the anxieties soar, keeping the patients in the examining room for so long before the doctor finally shows up to talk with you? I had so many questions. But, once he did come in the roon, and after the examination, he took the time to answer all my questions, fully and completely. I left feeling pretty good. And usually, I have what they call "White Coat Syndrome"....but that day, no such thing. My blood pressure was 128/60. Most times, during doctor's exams, it soars to "high" instantly.

Heart sounded healthy...breathing was clear, blood pressure, excellent, blood work after he read the copies I gave to him from my primary care physician, he was very pleased with ALL the results.  I was given the 'go ahead' for doing anything in the realm of exercising, walking, yard work, etc. EVEN traveling to Colorado and High Altitude areas....thin air and high altitude [at least now for me living at 10 feet above sea level for so long...traveling to places like Leadville Colorado at 2 MILES High!!] would really put a strain on my heart!!  He had me laughing a bit when he told me just before he left the room "Anni, do anything you want, except dishes!!!" I relayed that to Bud right away!!!! LOL I celebrated by going out and buying me a new stationary recumbent bike so I can exercise  without having to go out in the 97 degree heat. Thanks everyone for the well wishes this past week. I was hoping for the best news; your words of kindness and prayers, I know.........helped it all be true.

§ Dove Sentries and Sandhill Cranes...

In my previous post I mentioned that Bud and I went out birding for a few minutes this past Sunday. Altho we heard but did not see the Bobwhite Quail, we were witness to a huge flock [Bud estimated the field was filled with around 100 cranes] of Sandhill Cranes. The flock at first was about 40, but so many others dazzled our senses as they flew in to join their kind. The field was literally gray!! Even setting the camera's options on panoramic, there was just no way to get 'em all in one photo... When I first started taking photos, there were two Mourning Doves at the gate...
