I could easily live in Port Aransas [aerial view of park courtesy of Google Images]. Weekly, I take a day trip there. It is one of my favorite nearby areas. If it weren't for the location where hurricanes and devastating surge from storms hit, and the lack of amenities of a larger city, I'd be there as a resident in a heart beat!! This past week, I walked along the trails of Robert's Point Park. And when there, I noticed that finally, the observation tower has been replaced from the damages that the hurricane back three years ago ripped it apart. Naturally I had to climb it! From atop the tower, you can look up the ship channel while watching the ferry boats carrying vehicles to and from Port A [historically named Ropesville] to Aransas Pass. Or another direction, watch the tanker ships traverse the channel and turn toward the Gulf of Mexico and perhaps a dolphin or two. Maybe, if you know where to look, you can see on the horizon the oldest lighthouse of this area that remains [2nd oldest in the state of Texas], or another direction takes you around to view the marina. The park itself is dedicated to one of the first settlers known as Robert Mercer where he and his family built a cabin from driftwood at the very park. Mustang Island where Port A is located was once called Wild Horse Island. A famous pirate, Jean Lafitte, supposedly buried treasure marked with a silver sword [Spanish Dagger] -never found. Port Aransas is rich in history!! Now, the images I share may not be suitable to view if you suffer from vertigo. You're forewarned:The Lighthouse
As you know, I like to do pencil sketches. And I am fascinated by the Lydia Ann Lighthouse [once called Aransas Pass Light Station]. It was built circa 1857. Tho no longer in operation as a guide to the Port of Corpus Christi, the original light remains in the Port A museum. It is now privately owned. But I took the liberty of sketching it long ago. Here's my drawing. And as I walked to the tip of the park just before the marina boardwalk, I turned and took a photo of the lighthouse as it looked that day...

What a fabulous aerial and it does look like a wonderful place to live. Love your lighthouse drawing, Anni!

DeleteHello Anni,
ReplyDeleteI love the views from the tower and the pretty lighthouse. Your Patriotic troll is cute.
Take care, enjoy your day! I wish you a happy new week!
Thanks Eileen. Enjoy your holiday weekend too. Be safe.
DeleteLovely place but like you said, too vulnerable. Best to visit then go back to high ground.
ReplyDeleteDidn't get too dizzy but had I been there, would probably be unconscious. Fear of heights is a real view buster.
It's a little dizzying for me too.
DeleteWow! That is a great place for a day trip and the views from the observation tower are awesome! I love you pencil sketch! You are talented!
ReplyDeleteJeanette: I deleted my post yesterday, but saved your comment. Sorry.

DeleteYour little patriotic troll is darling, Anni. Her little smile and her dress... and beautiful rainbow hair! She's perfect for the holiday weekend.
ReplyDeleteI admire your adventurous spirit, Anni. You're a strong woman... able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Well, maybe not buildings but big tall staircases, for sure!! The pictures you shared are breathtaking! Thank you for taking us along. ~Andrea xoxo
I push myself sometimes to do "more".
DeleteI love that you can walk in history weekly.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful place and now that the building has been restored you can now see the entire area.
I am looking forward to the day when Dave is finally mobile again and we can do our walks together.
Not looking forward to the temps for the next 2 days..today it will be 102F and tomorrow its suppose to be 106F.. whew...too hot for me. Thank goodness for the AC.
Enjoy your Memorial Day.
Sue
I won't be climbing the tower often...but, it's a good viewing location. That is HOT!!!
DeleteI really like those vertiginous photos. And the troll is just delightful!
ReplyDeleteThanks D J
DeleteI love the lighthouse photo! It looks just abit misty, like the kind of weather a boat would need a light. Plus it is so atmospheric. I like the lacy sleeves on this troll. Seems like they made the outlook better than ever!
ReplyDeleteIt really wasn't...just humidity!!
DeleteThat does look like a very nice area. I can see why you like it
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty, it's peaceful, nearly crime free, and most of all quiet!!!
DeleteThe views from the top are spectacular. I don';t like heights, but for a good view I might even go there.
ReplyDelete😊
DeleteNICE views from the tower!! Sure would be a nice place to visit.
ReplyDeleteIt is...always something to watch.

DeleteI tried "reading between the lines"!
We went through Mississippi a few years after their hurricane had been through. I remember one restaurant rebuilt and on its walls showed a line on how high the water had come up. We were on the second floor. Port Aransas is a name familiar to me and I am wondering if I went through there on one of our road trips. Glad the observation tower was rebuilt and am impressed you climbed those steps. Not sure if I could. Enjoyed the photos as always Anni. Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteFor me, when I see something like this tower (and it looks stable), I hafta climb. Lol
DeleteI know what you mean about living on the coast. I enjoy visiting the Mississippi and Alabama coasts, but I want to be far inland during hurricane season!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week!
...not much different than tornado alley.
DeleteI don't do heights well, but photos don't bother me. Some I can climb and some not. have never made it to top of a lighthouse. it is a beauitful place to visit. at least you are close enough to visit
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy it there.
