For a couple of decades now, the two of us sisters have been celebrating a special day. Just for the two of us. It all began in the early 1980's when I talked with my sister on the phone one weekend. She seemed down and out. My kids had nearly grown up and she had married late in life, and her husband was much older than she...she said she felt neglected. We both lived in Colorado, but she on the Western Slope of the Rocky Mountains, and I on the eastern slope. We lived about 10 hours drive from each other. And the huge mountain range separated us from just taking off in the car and driving to visit. SNOWY, snow-packed mountains, and wintry, icy highways. It was late February at the time, and there was no way the two of us could just hop in the car, and take off to see each other. So the next Monday, on my lunch hour I told the boss that I'd like to take an extra hour off and do some personal things....that I'd make up for that two hour lunch the following day and come in early on Tuesday.
I went shopping. I bought two identical glasses...green, long stemmed, blown glass wine glasses. I bought two bottles of champagne. I bought one small gift. And I spent a long time looking for a certain special card from the Hallmark store. After that was accomplished and in my car, I then drove home, wrapped and packaged one glass, the gift, the card, and one of the bottles of champagne...shipped it off to my sister with instructions in the card on what we were going to do! I wrote to her telling her that on March 18th at 8 PM our time we were to both open our bottle of champagne, go out on our patio decks and face each other and salute sisterhood!
By the end of the week, she received her package and called me again. She was elated. At precisely 8 PM on the specified evening, we saluted each other and celebrated being sisters. Today, now that I'm on Central Time and she on Mountain Time we make sure we're in sync.
On March 18th, each and every year [whether we're home or on a trip]....we stop our personal lives with a phone call, a small gift for each other, and a glass of champagne....all at 8 PM!! Here's to YOU my sister!!! Today is OUR DAY!!!!

ReplyDeleteyou and your sister have a wonderful tradition (and relationship) going. it's heartwarming to read. my sister is 18 years older than me, and we've only become sisters and friends about 10 years ago, mainly due to the age gap and the distance (she lives very far away). but at least we have each other now...

ReplyDeleteI hope you and your sister do get to see each other IRL on occasion! My sis and I just spent the week-end together on a trip - it was great. We live in the same town, but don't talk often enough - mostly at church in the foyer! But she's retiring in 10 weeks, so hopefully that will change.

ReplyDeleteI've been having some computer problems and still am, so it's curtailed my blogging and surfing quite a bit. Gotta send off my wireless router and wait on a replacement to come in the mail, and I think my desktop computer cocked its toes up. I'll try some first aid and see if it can be resuscitated, but I've got my doubts. I'll probably have to play taps over it this time.
