One sunny day an old man approached the White House from across Pennsylvania Avenue, where he'd been sitting on a park bench. He spoke to the Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with President Hillary Clinton."
The Marine replied, "Sir, Mrs. Clinton is not President and doesn't reside here."
The old man said, "Okay," and walked away.
The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to the same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Hillary Clinton".
The Marine again told the man, "Sir, as I said yesterday, Mrs. Clinton is not President and doesn't reside here."
The man thanked him and again walked away.
The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the very same Marine, saying "I would like to go in and meet with President Hillary Clinton."
The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and said, "Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to speak to Mrs. Clinton. I've told you already several times that Mrs. Clinton is not the President and doesn't reside here. Don't you understand?"
The old man answered, "Oh, I understand you fine. I just love hearing your answer!"

The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "See you tomorrow!"

Second, the challenge:

Have you ever heard of the Kaprekar's constant? It's a number! The number is 6174. Now, here's the challenge. Get a piece of paper and write down ANY four digit number - the only number combination that does NOT work is 1111 or any repetitive numbers...so, forget those combinations. Okay, for example, I am going to use the four digit number 6347. Now, with those four numbers, 6347, make the LARGEST combination of the very SAME numbers just written down. Which would be 7643. Subtract the SMALLEST 4 number combination from the original four which would be 3467. Your answer would be: 4176. Now the base number is 4176. Again, rearrange those four numbers to largest and smallest, subtracting the smaller from the larger number. 7641 minus 1467. What does that equal?

6347...largest combination - 7643 minus the smallest combination - 3467. Equals 4176. Largest combination - 7641 minus the smallest combination - 1467. This equals the Kaperkar's constant number of 6174.

Keep in mind two things: If your answer is only three digits always use a leading zero, AND it may take several iterations to accomplish the Kaprekar's constant.

1- derived from Medieval Times..."small beer" made from herbs, spices, bark and berries [containing alcohol by fermentation]
2- root beer was created on accident by a pharmacist experimenting
3- Charles Hires was the first one to come up with a recipe that was widely marketable [as root TEA]
4- The “root” in the name of Hires’ concoction came from its main ingredient, the sassafras root
5- today root beer typically contains an artificial sassafras flavor rather than the real thing
