The other day we had tropical forced winds blowing thru our area. That means very little bird activity which is my main goal for exercising as I do--counting steps and bird photography. Like killing two birds with one stone...sorry. THAT was distasteful of me. But, it was such a bright, clear day, with mild temperatures and low humidity, I still ventured out walking. My first stop was Packery Channel Park [the boardwalk with the oak motte and this time of year a great amount of wildflowers], and then from there walking uphill to the Audubon Sanctuary where I spotted a Crested Caracara [Mexican Eagle] atop a power pole, and then traversing through a residential area where there is one lady that feeds the migrant birds from Spring to Autumn. I've seen many lifers [once in a lifetime sighting] in her yard with her numerous feeding stations! When I arrived at her house, there were two black bellied whistling ducks on her home's roof! What a hoot. You'll see them in the photos below. But, back to my walk in the high winds. As I walked TO, the wind was in my face. Luckily, walking back and around, the wind was at my back. LOL

When I returned to my car, I left this area and drove to the channel's [about 3 miles from the park along the island highway] jetty so I could walk the paved trail along the channel water and eventually arrive at the Gulf on foot. I was expecting a lot of surfing activity because the high winds will create great waves. I was correct. I stopped at the end and then climbed down the sand covered boulders to sit [I couldn't stand very well without being blown over] and watch the parasailers and the windsurfers for some time, trying also to capture some of the curls of the waves. That'll be my next blog post....
Sure enough, right atop the roof. Do you think they are a pair? The huge white flower is gorgeous; Yucca?
ReplyDeleteYes, yucca. And I'm 99% positive they are a "couple".
DeleteLOL Love the picture of the duck looking over the edge of the roof at you.
ReplyDelete😊
DeleteGorgeous flowers. I love the Caracara and the cute Whistling Ducks. Take care, have a great day and week ahead!
ReplyDeleteWe birders stick together.
DeleteLove all of the beautiful flowers but my favorite is the duck popping up his head to peek.
ReplyDelete😊
DeleteI laughed out loud when the duck peered over the roof. I LOVE that photo.. the flowers are gorgeous. the last 12 days, since the 1st of april, walking Beau each morning the wind was in our face as we left.. 4 of those days it was gusting to the 40's. coming home was ok but chilly.
ReplyDeleteIt topped 70 mph here that day. You know what that's like!!
Delete" Like killing two birds with one stone..."
ReplyDeleteOMG, Anni, that made me laugh out loud. HILARIOUS!
Ironic you mentioned the high winds because we've had the same in the city. In fact, one night I could hear the strong wind gusts against my 21st floor apartment windows.
Fantastic photos! Love that shot of the bird on the telephone pole!
Have a terrific Tuesday, my friend!
Was your building swaying any!
DeleteWe have yucca here too! (Not in bloom yet.) The peek-a-boo whistling duck made me chuckle out loud! Sweet!

DeleteI think you got some fine photos...love the whistlers on the roof.

DeleteMOL MOL "Like killing two birds with one stone...sorry. THAT was distasteful of me." But it was clever. We all know NO BIRDS are harmed on your watch. I love the red bill on the duck
ReplyDeleteHugs Cecilia
Red duck bill ...your favorite color!!
DeleteI’m glad you braved the winds to get these photos. If there is one type of weather I don’t like and we get lots here, that is wind.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind wind so much...it's the sand blowing during such storms
Deletebetter watch that wind, you might end up in KANSAS! :)
ReplyDeleteOh no!! Better batten down the hatches!!
DeleteWe have had really strong winds too but the "storm" that was suppose to arrive was a total bust.
ReplyDeleteWe do need rain so badly.
Love your gorgeous photos of all the wildlife and flowers.
A perfect way to spend the day.
Sue
Oh we need rain too. Our water supply reservoir is down to 40%
DeleteGreat photos in spite of the wind!
ReplyDelete😊
DeleteNice that you not only saw pretty wildflowers but some interesting birds too! Is it rare to see that kind of duck?
ReplyDeleteNo...the whistling ducks are plentiful here...year 'round.
DeleteBeautiful wildflowers! And that peeking duck is hilarious. And to think he can whistle too! 🤣 Ugh...windier than all get out here too the last 3 days...and it is supposed to continue. But I am pretty sure there's nothing "tropical" about it LOL. ~Robin~
ReplyDeleteWell, the winds now are bringing in tropical moisture off the gulf. Miserable.
DeleteYour walk yielded some nice snaps. The whistling ducks on the rooftop made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteThey made me laugh too.
DeleteSounds like quite the winds! I love the ducks on the roof. :)
ReplyDeleteYour flowers are so pretty. Our crocus just popped up!
By the time you are in full bloom, we will be drying up.
DeleteWhat a wonderful, invigorating walk that must have been. Your flowers and those whistlers are a delight. Looking forward to your next post :)
ReplyDeleteIt's coming soon to a blog near you. *wink
DeleteDucks on a roof! Love it. In the summertime I often see lots of black vultures hulking on roofs. That's not nearly as cute a sight.
ReplyDeleteNo vultures...ducks are cuter, I agree.
DeleteLove seeing your photos! The winds here are awful. I would love to have a calm peaceful day just once. Take care and enjoy what is left of this week.
ReplyDeleteThanks!! I remember the winds coming down the front range.
DeleteI did enjoy seeing these lovely photographs, the peeking duck did make me smile.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Those ducks are a majority favorite! 😊
DeleteHi Anni! Hope you and Bud liked the chicken dish.
ReplyDeleteYou asked about our porch chairs. Can you believe, that after all this, they brought the wrong chairs? Ours went to Massachusetts. So now we are waiting for an exchange. I'll be posting when they finally arrive!
Unbelievable!!
DeleteBeautiful flower photos, and I love the one of the red billed duck peering over the edge of the roof.
ReplyDeleteI have always admired you getting out and walking as you do, Anni. I truly do need to follow your example! ~Andrea xoxo
