There is an art that I have found myself fascinated and quite interested in from my Junior High School days when my Biology teacher [Mr. Webb...one good looking teacher that all the teen girls had a crush on...including me] took us on a field trip for the weekend, spelunking, in a cave near the Wyoming border...way north of where I went to school. But, that is not the point of my post this time around. When we entered the cave early the following morning, in search of bats, we found prehistoric cave paintings. Some call them petroglyphs, but the real term I learned that day was parietal art. Upon our return back home from the weekend trip, we studied the bats [by the way, we found bats also, and I fell in love with them....their wings, so soft and supple.] and went off into the art we also found. The teacher invited a speaker to our class on prehistoric art and eventually the finding in the cave, boiled down to proof of prehistoric man in that area! This all got me interested in that art form. When I married Bud, we've taken many trips around the west and I soon found another interest in what is called
LEDGER ART. It derives from the old world stone drawings, etc. but this medium is painting and drawing...it is most always Native American. They used to tell stories with this art form; of battles, buffalo hunts, family heritage, etc. We now have several books in our home library on the subject. A few weeks back when I didn't go anywhere but stir crazy, I asked Bud "
Do you think I could draw a horse in the style of ledger art? And have it come out authentic-looking" He said, he had no doubt I could pull it off. I opened up some books, researched, and gave it a go. I tried 'my hand' at drawing a battle war horse, finished it this past weekend, and framed it...
Wow! I really like it!

ReplyDeleteHave you read any of AW Baldwin. I just discovered his A Relic Series of 3 Novel. They caught my attention because they take place in and around Moab, UT. They are modern day books Relic is a hermit living in the caves in the area. His is part Native American knows all about the drawings. The first is called Desert Guardian. If you are interested in the ancient Native American petroglyphs you might enjoy the series. I'm on #2 Raptor Canyon. #3 Is Wings of Ghost Creek.
I ordered them from Amazon. I haven't been in a library or Barnes and Noble since March.
Any I'm enjoying them.
Hugs Cecilia
I'll have to check out amazon.

It would feel right at home on a cave's wall!

Wow...thanks Jan
DeleteA fascinating post today and I love your framed art! You did a marvelous job. Funny you should mention bats....my adult niece has a contract on a house with a tiny attic which the inspector found has bats and their pups. We have had a crash course on bats and when and how to safely remove the pups. Hope you have a nice evening.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'm sure I would not want bats in my attic!
DeleteHi Anni, I hope you will love the mini waffle maker. I want to share that the very first time I poured batter in, I used too much and it overflowed. I would suggest using just a little until you figure out how much is needed. The waffles end up being the size of an Eggo.
Deletelove to read of your description about art and prehistoric drawings....
ReplyDeleteaww... your painting is excellent....great work of art.
Have a wonderful day.
Thanks! Hope your day has been terrific too.
DeleteI love it! If I had artistic talent I would try that too. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you. Drawing for me can be a stress release (more from boredom)
