The Wetlands....

...aren't so wet these days.  [insert blog title before the "..."]

We have had a drier air mass move in, which brought the soaring temps to a screeching halt.  At least for a couple of days.  And I took advantage of the mornings in the low 70s to walk-about.  This post is in and around the Wetlands Reserve [altho, no rain for weeks, so everything looks brown and dry!]

The Morning Sky shots:

The trails in this area are a conglomerate of flagstone, caliche [gravel so heavy in mineral deposits, weeds aren't even a nuisance], wood boardwalks, and areas where it's likely to wash out with heavy downpours....cement. But most is the caliche; blending in with the natural enviornment.

On this particular day, every turn I made on the winding, numerous, trails, cottontails were out and about:

I stopped at the newest addition to the park....the fountain/waterfall:

At the time, sparrows, cardinals, and hummingbirds were exploring for tasty treats of insects and nectar from the flowers:

[this is the only place in town I've found PINK Turk's Cap [last photo is the above series] ---it's almost always red. I'm sure it's a nursery grown hybrid!]   - the Trumpet vine and white daisies were a great, attractive accent and hummingbird attraction to boot.

Trees and Grasses are becoming parched in the summer heat and going to seed:

At the halfway point, I made it to the Osprey Overlook, situated high above the basin [the bay was quite dry also] and only a lone nighthawk sung out its high-pitched cry as it flew overhead. It was time to turn around and cover the other half side of the trail system.

    1. ...and they DO multiply, for sure - adding to the population without subtracting from the environment. But, sometimes I am divided with a whole sum of opinions!

  3. We've got bunnies all over the place here, too. More than I've seen in other summers. I love the pretty flowers, all of them, and I'm glad you got a break from that oppressive heat. :-)

I do love all grasses, and the odd things is have never had any in my yard. not sure why. love the bunnies and flowers. it seems if we are DRY you are wet, if you are wet we are Dry... we now have your water over here and we are thankful for it... 2 to 3 inches every day for 2 weeks. YAY.. but no flooding. HOT though, no cool, our lows are 78 to 80 with highs above 90.... the next 7 days will be a repeat of the last 14 or so THEY say. as long as there are no storms I am happy

  6. I have only seen ONE rabbit on my rideabouts this year. Wonder why! We are not as dry as this but the dust fills the air when a car passes by. Your walk sounds like it was pleasurable and the photos are nice.

  8. Cab't wait to see the rest! My favorite shots are the beautiful sky. Is this a rabbit or a hare?

  9. Hasn't this break been wonderful? It has been almost fall like here. In the 50's at night.
Loved the bunnies. I have a yard full of them and Callie will get beyond excited and chase the babies--never catches them--but is totally wary of the big ones. They just stare eachother down. She might be a bit of a wuss.
