I left home around 6:30 a.m., thinking that I'd go to Pollywog Ponds for my morning walk. Patchy fog hindered my plans some. I just didn't want to walk [in tennis shoes] on the grass trail and get my feet soaked with all the dew that I find at that hour. So, I drove to Calallen, Texas and walked the PAVED trail at Bazemore Park instead. Once I pulled into the park, through the gate, once again I saw white tailed deer on both sides of the road, just feet from my car! I didn't want to startle them any, so I took three photos through the closed side window...

I parked near the hawk watch platform and went up on deck. Found that the fog had condensed along the interstate highway at quite a distance from me...

I walked a short time, spotting ducks [many different species], a couple of nutrias [large water rodents], javelinas grazing in the high grasses, black necked stilts, cardinals, kiskadees, sparrows, a NEW bird...the Sprague's Pipit, one solitary sandpipier along the river, and another bird that may be a new species also...I have yet to go through my guide book to I D it. Other than the bird photos taken, this is some of what I saw..

River is behind all the trees....bottom right in photo
The white flowers are very pretty. Do you know what it is? The wet leaves are spectacular, so pretty! I have seen these Javelinas on T.V. nature shows. This one looks like a groundhog or a beaver. But I know their legs are longer.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that is some kind of weed. The beaver-like critter is a nutria.
DeleteThat is a wonderful way to start out the day.
ReplyDelete...and at that hour, it's quiet. I like that best of all.
DeleteLOVE all the wildlife and the wild trees and moss, I thought the nutria was a beaver, have not heard that word before. whatever it is I would die of joy to see one. the deer are so beautiful
ReplyDelete...more or less, a giant rat.
DeleteOh, well that was a let down!! I had high hopes it was a beaver. Shows how language effects one's opinion.. :)
DeleteLol...no beaver, just an over-grown rat. Gotta be a member of our Congress? (Couldn't resist saying)
DeleteSuch great pictures you got, Anni. I was sure that was a beaver, color me surprised. And what are those things in the grass? They look like lions but I don't think that's right. :-)
ReplyDelete"Javelina in the high grasses"
DeleteLove- love- love! the red-leaves photo! I liked walking with you on the wood pathway.
ReplyDeleteThat red leaf branch was the only one in that section & stood out from all the rest.
DeleteYou chose wisely where to walk! Such gorgeous flora and fauna all together!
ReplyDeleteI walked up a muddy road to the gate yesterday! What a difference in our walks.....
I'm not much for walking in mud (around here the soil is like clay)
DeleteGreat photos. I sure miss south Texas this time of year.
ReplyDeleteIt's been downright COLD...but, finally warming up.
DeleteWonderful post, I like the way you display your images, artistic and inspiring.
