It's gonna be a busy week, so I will try and sum up a lot of stuff here in one post.

Weather Forecast: A mix of clouds and sunshine. Winds 15-20 MPH [southeast]
High expected: 93 degrees - Low expected: 77 degrees

It too needed to find shade...

...then, Elvis [or Elvira] has left the premises. Off, scurrying down to its den in the ground. And for us...back in the air conditioned car and a swipe of the sweat towel. We too, for now, have left the building!! [Mexican Ground Squirrel]
For good measure, I'm adding this barren tree...and fencing for Ms. T's Good Fences.

Driving to Calallen, Texas to check out the thermals for hawk migration, we stopped at Hazel Bazemore Park that holds its annual Hawk Watch from August to November each year. There was quite a crowd of hawkers there already! The platform was a bit packed like sardines. Bud and I stayed just a short while. In the interim, we saw only through the binoculars a kettle of Mississippi Kites and two Red Tailed Hawks near the horizon. How do we know they were kites and red-tails? MANY had high powered scopes. Too distant for my camera to get any photos. While there our few minutes, we saw cardinals, inca doves, white tipped doves, one green jay, sparrows, white winged doves, mockingbirds, ruby throated hummingbirds, grackles, egrets, and one caracara. And the mama deer we spotted the week before, showed up for all the people to ooooooh and ahhhh over her good looks!
Neither Bud nor I enjoy being in large crowds, so we left. Besides it was getting hot and I wanted a quick stop-over at another large city park. Each time we go there [which isn't but maybe twice a year] there always seems to be a lot of long billed curlews. And those birds didn't disappoint. Dozens. Everywhere we walked. I took several photos of the curlews, and we then walked around the duck pond. Ducks and geese. My other curlew images will be shared on my bird photo blog sometime in the future. With the hot sun beating down on us by mid-morning, I stopped under the shade of a live oak tree and let the soft breeze cool me down a bit. Bud took a photo...this is for Phil in the UK, he tells me in my comments that I always have photos of Bud and not me...here I am in all my glory. [lol]

It was amazing to see all the beautiful, rolling hills with pathways intersecting the paved roads to picnic areas, ponds, swimming pool, and frisbee golf course, with the grass so dry and parched. Just think, in May of this year, flooding and too much rain. Now, and since May, NO RAIN! When it comes to weather in Texas, there just isn't a happy medium.
Anyway, after a bit of walking we headed back to the car. A cute little critter entertained the viewfinder!! Did I say ... cute?

It too needed to find shade...

...it spotted me! Up on its haunches...sniffing...watching my every move. Looking this way, checking me out square on...looking that way!!

...then, Elvis [or Elvira] has left the premises. Off, scurrying down to its den in the ground. And for us...back in the air conditioned car and a swipe of the sweat towel. We too, for now, have left the building!! [Mexican Ground Squirrel]

Oh, thanks for the picture of YOU, Anni! I too sometimes wish you'd put one in now and then. Have a great week! :-)
ReplyDeleteWell then, that makes two of you!! Glad to oblige, :o)
DeleteGood morning, Anni. What a pretty sky shot. I love the Curlew and I would love to see one someday. Seeing a kettle of Kites is cool! Great shot of you, you look relaxed and deep in thought. The squirrel is cute, much different than my tree rats. I hope you stay cool and have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI've only seen the squirrels twice....in this area [a lot] and over on the islands near the more arid areas. Yes, they ARE different that any other squirrels I've seen too.
DeleteI love love love the critter.. adorable.. and great shots of him/her. your temps are the same as ours, which doesn't surprise me... we don't like crowds of people either... we prefer our nature with just us and nature
ReplyDeleteIn my experiences, when a huge number of people gather together, the 'phonies' outshine everyone else. Besides, shoulder to shoulder, it becomes a bit thick in B S too. lol
DeleteNice picture of you and the ground squirrel is pretty cute too. I hope the weather men are correct when they say we will have lots of rain this fall because of El Nino. I might regret saying that, you think?
ReplyDeleteI hope they're correct...I'd much prefer a small amount of flooding to drought. Did I just say that?
DeleteThat was a surprise, that cute critter standing in the shade of that tree! Yep, I know what you mean about birding in crowds - not my scene either. 77-93 I could welcome some of that and some of those Long-billed Curlews too.
ReplyDeleteStay cool Anni and Bud.
LOL....I thought you'd be surprised. And if you'd like, you can have that 93 temp any ol' time. The curlews are most always plentiful at this park...for some reason.
DeleteBarsuk- that's what they call that little critter here in Russia. I've seen once but when it spitted me it hid away fast. You got him really pretty on standing position. He's jyst adorable, isn't he?
ReplyDeleteI had to look up Barsuk. They, according to Google/wikipedia, are badgers. This little one is very small...and related to the squirrel.
DeleteGreat pictures of that cute squirrel Anni! :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to get that close to one so I
could take a picture :)) But they always run
when I get closer! :D
And I love that picture of you Anni! :)
I say it's pretty obvious, that you're doing
good on your diet :)) In your last profile
picture you were a bit more cheaky ;)
Just keep going and don't let that scary
thing get you again! :)) And a little more
and you'll look like a young girl again :))
Have a beautiful week Anni!
Möwe
I have lost some, but I'm thinking it's just the angle and the day's shadows/light in the photo.
DeleteThanks for the compliments.
Hi Anni woohoo lots of good info and photos. We love your photo...that bird has a beak that could reach all the way to NC.
ReplyDeleteHappy week
Madi and mom
....they DO have long beaks to be sure. Thanks M&M
DeleteWhat a cute critter indeed!
ReplyDelete...that, it is.
DeleteIt is so HOT here that I don't even want to go outside after 10 am. I am counting days until maybe, just maybe it will cool off a little. Love the little critter. Do you know what kind of squirrel it is? Aren't curlews just magnificent! Hope you have a good week!
ReplyDelete...that statement about being out after 10am is true for the most part here too. Yep, as I posted below the images...Mexican Ground Squirrel.
DeleteGreat photos....love that beautiful sky shot, especially. Hot and dry here in NC too...expecting much needed rain later this week...yay :)
ReplyDeleteIt promises rain here, but the clouds always dissipate and nothing. Hope YOU get some rain. Thanks Debby
DeleteI love your photos. What an awesome sky shot. Your blog is always beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWhy, thank you so much for those kind words Brenda.
DeleteSo nice to see YOU in a photo for a change!! :)
ReplyDeleteThat one and all the others are wonderful (always!). Stay cool!
...thanks Terri. It's gonna be difficult to stay cool being that I enjoy going out. lol
DeleteAwesome captures for the day as always, Anni!! And I do love the shot of you!!! Hope your week is off to a great start!! Enjoy -- camera in hand, of course!!
ReplyDelete...thanks Sylvia. I rarely go out and about without a camera. lol
DeleteThe sky and the fence photos are my favorites for the nature side of things. And goes without saying glad to see you out and about doing what you love best despite the heat.
ReplyDeleteThanks Gayle.
Deletethat is a cute little critter. I see it's a type of squirrel. Love it's spots. I've got a plan in the works for birding/humaning index card. I'll let you know when I get it done. :)
ReplyDeleteOh this is so great to read Ann. I can't wait.
DeleteWhat a beautiful sunrise!! I thought the little critter was a ground hog. I'd never have guessed a Mexican ground squirrel. Have a grand week and thank you!
ReplyDelete...thank YOU Cathy.
DeleteI came from Through My Lens to look at this amazing little critter. You captured her so wonderfully. It seems that she is on a show for you.
ReplyDeleteShe definitely loved the camera...at least for a while. lol Thanks Kaya.
DeleteLovely critter collection!
ReplyDeleteI like your stylish shades too, Ms. Anni!
Have a Happy Week!
Peace :)
Thanks!! You can't see it in the photo, but my 'shades' have rhinestones and the map of Texas on them.
DeleteWhat a great picture of you, it looks like you are enjoying the day. You sure know how to snap the cutest darn photos for us too! I really enjoyed them all!
ReplyDeleteThank you times two Karen.
Deleteyou are such a lovely lady.
ReplyDeleteahhhh, shucks, you have me blushing Denise.
DeleteThat is Elvira I am pretty sure and she is a cutie...that is a nice pic of you. I don't like crowds at all...in fact, I don't even like just a few people when I am out some place like that.
ReplyDeleteI'd much rather have just us two. I really like being alone in the world for the most par, especially when it comes to birding as we do so often. When there are crowds....it's too noisy for a good 'field day'. Thanks Rose.
DeleteGreat to see you, Anni!
ReplyDeleteThanks Michelle
DeleteI love the picture of you!
ReplyDeleteThe critter is adorable. It looks like a chipmunk to me.
Thanks Mari....the squirrel coloring is a lot like a chipmunk I would say now that you mention it...but they're MUCH larger.
DeleteIt is a cute little bugger.
ReplyDeleteYep, that is is!!
DeleteI like the critter pics but LOVE the one of YOU!!! Take care of yourself and don't get too hot!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda. Yep, the heat'll knock me bonkers if I don't be careful and get over-exposed.
DeleteThat's a nice photo of you Anni.
ReplyDeleteI like the first photo. The cloud looks like a bear head.
Thanks....it WAS a beautiful morning sky.
DeleteJust love the little ground squirrels! And what a wonderful portrait of you....nice to see you, for a change! The long-billed curlew is great!
ReplyDeleteThank you Marie.
DeleteThese are great photos. I loved looking at each and every one of them
ReplyDeleteThanks Maria.
DeleteAll of your photos are great! I can't imagine how you can stand to be out in the heat! Good to see you too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ms. G
DeleteI like you pose fro your photo and thatSquirrel is rather cute standing on his hind legs
ReplyDelete...they truly ARE cute squirrels. Thanks Margaret.
DeleteHey Anni! Great piccie! And a great outing by accounts... We are experiencing an early Spring, much to my delight, and all your 'Sunshine' reminds me again just why *smiles*
ReplyDeleteI would wish for an early Fall here, but don't think it's comin'
DeleteThanks for the compliment Ms. V
Nice to see you Anni!!! Looks like a wonderful outing... That squirrel looks like a nursing Mama and my late friend who rehabbed them told me of what great Moms squirrels are...who knew...Michelle
ReplyDeleteI think so too. She had a litter recently.
DeleteThanks Michelle
A very interesting post and a great series of photos. Thanks for the photo of yourself - lovely! I was especially interested in the Curlew - same shape but different feather patterns from the ones I see down here.
ReplyDelete...thank YOU Mick.
DeleteThat little guy stands upright like a meerkat... lol... how cute!
ReplyDeleteIt does now that you mentioned it!!
DeleteSuch interesting critters!
ReplyDelete...thanks Linda.
DeleteGreat looking Curlew Anni. I've not seen a Long billed one before.
ReplyDelete...they're all over this park. For some reason I don't know. :-)
DeleteGreat looking Curlew - but the critter is splendid as well!
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
Thanks Stewart
Deletei like the photo of you and glad you're using it for your profile shot, too! :) sweet gopher/varmint and love an old snag tree. thanks, anni!
ReplyDeleteThank YOU Tex.
DeleteAnother fun outing- you two have just the perfect area to see so many neat birds. Sorry about the heat- we got our break yesterday and it is lingering this morning in the mid 60s. Not a tremendous amount of rain, but enough to stop my griping about it! Great shots today, Anni, and you look maaa velous! I hope you heard that in Billy Crystal's voice. LOL!
ReplyDeleteYes, I did hear a bit of Billy Crystal in your voice!!
DeleteThanks Terri
Another outing alright. Lots of birds and lots of people crowds. Not that fond of it neither.Hubby and I. Where we are moving to town crowds to know end summer and Fall. . We are know for a real tourist attraction. Wild life bird sanctuary, wolves sanctuary . Antique shops, fine arts, glass blowing. Now it has thinned out the crowd. . . I agree. Especially when it is hot. Take pictures then disappear right on.
ReplyDeleteYour picture is really nice. Your much young looking then I imagined. . Not sure why I thought you were tad older. Compliment for you from me. You look like a tiny lady also like Tex gal. I agree. Known need for you to hide away from a camera. Your a pretty lady and a relaxed lady. You look like you enjoy your
adventures and you like to explain as you go along. That is a bonus for all.
Can write now and read your blog. I have it pretty large . Ha-ha.
And you got in a barren tree and fence and like your wording. For Good measures.
Enjoy rest of day Anni.
...thanks Carolann. You're able to read my posts better now, and for that, I am very happy.
DeletePsssst...I AM getting close to 70.
The little critter really wanted to be in the spotlight. Just stood there and made different poses for you. I really like the last one of the tree and fence. Your post are always very interesting.
ReplyDelete...thanks LV
DeleteFirst it was fun seeing you in a photo. You looked great.
ReplyDeleteLoved the Curlew with the long beak - super cool bird.
Great tree and fencing, such a gnarly old tree.
Oh gosh Ida....thanks for your kindness.
DeleteInteresting shot of the barb wire and barren tree
ReplyDeletethanks very much Bruce
DeleteThe curlews are very cool, Anni! Good to see you made a new friend with that critter.
ReplyDelete~
...this particular park has so many curlews. Thanks...yes, that critter was daring me to just walk away and ignore all its antics. But she knew I'd come around.
DeleteDoes that tree need water or is it dead or is it in winter mode?
ReplyDeleteThe solitary tree and fence make a great combo and the photo is perfect for Tex's meme!
Have a Beautiful Day, Anni!
Peace :)
Great post! I totally agree about the crowds. Not my thing at all! And I'm completely jealous of your Curlews! What wonderful birds.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your wonderful post!
