It's May Day!! And an upcoming weekend. Hope you're ready to see those May flowers now that the April showers are over.Speaking of showers: My "Five for Friday" is...yes, the difference within FIVE months. A little twist on the themes...
Back in November I and Bud were driving around looking for a wood duck [to no avail], but when we hit this country road, we spotted the Longhorn AND a field full of Sandhill Cranes...perhaps you remember my posting if you follow me from my birding photo blog....The post I'm referring to is this one. [link] This post will show you the 'empty' field where the cranes were back in November of last year!!! There was a scant pooling of water that the cranes drank from and the open field where they fed on the grasses!!
BUT, yesterday, we took a drive through the same area, and with all the heavy Springtime rains this past month, the grassy field is no longer....it's a virtual LAKE!! This following, particular, picture is taken from the shoulder of the country road, looking through the fence....to the direction which was once the grazing pasture/field of cattle and in winter...a dining table for the cranes. The fence in the distant far left is the fencing you'd see in the previous post from late November....

Anyway, it was a most beautiful day for the last day of April. We here in South Texas had a 'cold front' move in 'bout mid-week, and the daytime temps are perfect for me...lows in the high 50 degree range with a drier air mass by late afternoon with a mild 70-80 degrees!! I'm lovin' it. 'Cause I know soon enough the humidity will return and we'll "suffer-cate" all too soon.
Along the back roads, we 'ran into' a field of cattle, from Santa Gertrudis, short horns, and Brahmas.... with a large flock of cattle egrets following them everywhere!!
That's amazing. I wonder how long that "lake" will last. That last cow has personality! :-)

ReplyDeleteI actually said OHHHHH at the last photo of the cow. i have a thing for cows, just love them. so beautiful and i would love to 'run into' a field of cows. that is a lot of rain to hang around that long. we have had a few sand cranes hit by cars and killed. they wrote on FB to please watch for them and stop or slow down to give them a chance...
