RUBBISH: things that are no longer useful or wanted and that have been thrown out. : something that is worthless, unimportant, neglected.
On a quiet day last Wednesday, Bud and I went out to the islands to walk along the channel in hopes of seeing some water birds. Overcast, and breezy, it kept most of the birds inland, except for a few terns and seagulls. We walked the entire distance [about a mile] from the island highway bridge, along the channel, all the way to the end of the jetty jutting out from the shore. The sea was quite calm, but of course, always currents which makes for the wonderful ocean spray and froth wash up once you walk the entire distance coming upon the last of the huge boulders. We watched the waves, photographed some terns, and enjoyed the mist blowing into our faces. Way off to our left as we looked to the horizon and day dreamed of pirate ships and booty, we spotted some surfers testing their skills while riding the waves. [Now, here I must mention again...to me, this is NOT surfing...more like boarding. These 'wannabe' surfers really need to go to California, or even Hawai'i to know just what surfing and waves are.] Anyway, after taking some photos, we walked back to the car. Along the jetty, I spotted some rubbish. Didn't take a photo at the time...but turned around and snapped the shutter. My rubbish for the week is a Fish Hook Removal Tool...long neglected and left behind only to rust with the salt water and neglect---

The closer we came to the end of the jetty, the calls of the terns and gulls were muffled by the roar of the surf pounding against the rock formations. The last 10 feet or so of the walkway is always wet and slippery. You must watch your step carefully to not lose balance and pay attention to the waves coming in...easily washing you out to sea!! The bird photos 'on the water' along with the crashing wave images are Sandwich Terns...

...and on the beach, Royal Terns

HODGEPODGE
linking to: Wednesday Hodgepodge
1. It's still May, right? When were you last in the middle of something that might be described as mayhem? Road trip...coyote...crash...front bumper cracked...fell off....highway mayhem.
2. When did you last feel dismayed? ...by this question!! LOL...seriously, I was dismayed when the Prez was re-elected?!!! [as of this posting on Tuesday...909 days 'til a new one is elected. I guess we could end up with one worse in office...then, I'll be dismayed again. Come back and ask the question on Jan. 20th of 2017]
3. What's a food combination you like, but other people may find strange? I love munching on salty potato chips while eating a banana. I guess my banana/chips isn't so strange, but I could post this: Bud LOVES peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches....ewww!!
4. "It is never too late to be what you might have been." Do you think that's true? Why or why not? Logically; impossible. Being what you wanna be is a whole different story.
5. US News and World Report listed the best historic destinations in the US as follows-Washington D.C, Philadelphia PA, Williamsburg VA, Charleston SC, Boston MA, Richmnd VA, Savannah, GA, Santa Fe NM, Yellowstone, San Antonio TX, San Francisco CA, New Orleans LA, and Charlottesville VA. Of those listed how many have you seen in person? Which two sites on the list would you most like to see in person? Never seen Williamsburg!! I would always go back to Washington D. C. ---it's our nation's capital, and there is ALWAYS something to do/see....and the second would be San Francisco....the hills and bay!!
6. May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. If you had to participate in a single fitness activity for the next half hour, which activity would you choose? Not because I 'choose'...but I'm in the middle of painting and redecorating the living room a bit, so it would be the physical fitness of climbing up and down the ladder!!
7. What did you like best about the city, town, or neighborhood where you grew up? My backyard, neighborhood was the Colorado Rocky Mountains!!
8. Insert your own random thought here. Abide by this and you'll keep America Beautiful! [or take it as a play on words too...whichever]---

Enjoyed, as always my friend.
ReplyDelete,,,always enjoy your company Denise.
DeleteIt would be nice if people learned to pick up their trash and butts. Love the pretty Terns and the waves.. Have a happy day!
ReplyDelete...and happy day to you too Eileen.
DeleteEnjoyed reading!
ReplyDelete...thanks!
DeleteWilliamsburg is a great place to visit. Our family has always liked those historic places. I was in Washington DC before we were married, but Bob never has been. We'd love to go there together.
ReplyDeleteI hate those butts all over the place- yuck!
Ya, it's changed over the years, but still a great city to visit.
DeleteOh, your water shots make me want to spend a few hours beside the ocean!
ReplyDelete...in my opinion there is nothing more relaxing and enjoyable than being near the ocean...even during storms, it's just so dramatic.
DeleteIt mostly looks like a lovely place to walk...some people just make messes ;( Read the entries that I always enjoy, and my food combo would be slice open a ripe banana, spread on a nice layer of chunky, or creamy peanut butter, place top back on and spread outside with Mayonnaise...yum!
ReplyDeleteBud likes bananas, and then makes peanut butter and mayo sandwiches. I guess I should tell him to combine the flavors!!!
DeleteFirst a response to your comment on mine. Mr. Pruitt, wife, and knife...I think it's the beginning of a mystery novel. You found a nice piece of rubbish. Abandoned and forlorn. :) The Royal Terns do look royal don't they. Beautiful shots. And I think you should put Williamsburg on your list. It isn't that far from D.C. Thanks for linking up!
ReplyDelete...thank YOU for hosting!!
DeleteTrash on the beach breaks my heart. Those plastic rings around 6pack of beverage cans and bottles especially. The shore birds get them tangle all around their bodies. I meticulous cut all the plastic into many many pieces.
ReplyDeleteMOL MOL MOL PITT (pain in the tush).
It is mom's version of PITA. I think all the stress of the last year finally settled in my lower back and hip and tush. I have a combo of sciatica in my tush and beginning arthritis going on in my lower back and hip. All at one time.
I am an avid walker and boy is this putting a crimp in my walking and sitting.
Hopefully meds will work miracles. I just took my 2nd one.
Hugs C
Ohhhhhhhh, well now I know!! Inquiring minds.
DeleteTerns are great - I'd love to see these.
ReplyDeleteMy fishing pliers look like that even when I try to look after them!!
Cheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
PS: there is a brief explanation of why the beach squeaks in this weeks WBW.
I went back and read your explanation....so very interesting.
DeleteI can see why you need to be careful when walking near that crashing surf. I could feel the wet all the way over here. :-)
ReplyDeleteYep, it can be tricky!!
DeleteLove those waves! But a peanut butter and mayo sandwich? lol
ReplyDeleteI know...it's certainly gag city for me.
Deletelove the terns. and the rusted pliers. sorry about the coyote/crash/bumper incident.
ReplyDeleteA very expensive road trip that day. lol
DeleteI was right there with you on the jetties- could almost feel the surf spray. I think we need to take a family trip to the beach, and soon!
ReplyDelete...a family outing at the beach...a perfect day.
DeleteHi There, I get so upset at people leaving their messes all over the place. Just think what a better place we would have if EVERYONE cleaned up after themselves...
ReplyDeleteLovely walk... You do have a great place where you can get some exercise... Great photos!!
My 'odd' combination is something I grew up eating which nobody eats I don't think.. It's a Peanut Butter and Mayonaise Sandwich . Don't know where in my family that came from but I loved it. I don't eat it anymore though since I try to stay away from mayo.
I have been to many of those historical places, with Yellowstone and Williamsburg being favorites. Two places I have not been and would love to visit are San Francisco and also San Antonio. (Can you believe I lived in the Houston area for 12 yrs. and never went to San Antonio???? ha)
Hugs,
Betsy
That makes two of you then....as I wrote that Bud likes that combination also.
DeleteHi Anni, I love the combination of the waves and the terns. I love eating pork rinds with endamame seeds. :)
ReplyDelete...now that's a new one for me...endamame seeds?
DeleteI love the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks! That's a cute row of terns!
ReplyDelete...thanks Karen
DeleteLove the row of terns in your last shot. THey look like they're posing!
ReplyDelete...ummmm, the male had a lot more on his mind. lol
DeleteGreat photos, as always, and I enjoyed your early Hodgepodge! Watch for mine in the morning!
ReplyDelete...will do dear Terri.
DeleteBet it's a beautiful morning at the coast this morning. Good thing I don't live at the coast I would drive my self crazy trying to pick up after people and it seems to be a hopeless cause.
ReplyDeleteI know...the beach messes are created by human waste....and in town, I'm thinking a lot of the debris is from the dump trucks!! It's a never-ending mess.
DeleteOhhhh....poor yote! And your car. Loving the beach and terns. I've been missing water lately. In fact, I really would like to be nearby it again.
ReplyDeleteSabino's Canyon? Or is it dry? Maybe soon a monsoon will hit Tucson.
DeleteMy old stomping grounds. As I remember your are in PA? I use to find a lot of things washed ashore.....once a Cuban fishing boat ...They had it surrounded with police tape and we couldn't get near...
ReplyDeletePA as in Port Aransas, or Pennsylvania? We live in Corpus...close to Port A. And of course Colorado...we have a lot of territory in common.
DeleteWhat a beautiful area! Strangest combination of foods I've heard of: my mother, whilst she was carrying me, ate peanut butter, sardine, onion and mustard sandwiches. I've told her repeatedly that her favourite nosh was what made me so strange, lol.
ReplyDeleteOh my...what a combination. Now I know what's wrong with you. [kidding of course!!!!]
DeleteHi Anni Love the shot of the Royal Terns and the waves
ReplyDelete...thanks Margaret.
DeleteYeah, this was a tough Hodgepodge. I'm not sure I can join in this week cuz I have no good answers (not as though my other weeks' answers were good!) Think you have a lot of company re. the opinion on the current administration. I won't even capitalize it. Enjoyed your first part also and the closest place we can go to see waves crashing is Duluth, MN - a couple hours away. We pretend it's the ocean. :-)
ReplyDeleteWater...on a hot summer's day is perfect no matter what it is, or where.
DeleteLove the thrashing sea photos. Makes me want to be there - at least for a couple of days.
ReplyDelete...come on down!!
DeleteGreat capture, we the same problem with the trash. Beautiful photos.
ReplyDelete...thanks Christian.
DeleteThe Royal Terns are very cute and colorful, but this place looks dangerous! But I am sure you know your way around. When I was much younger, I used to eat lime sherbet with Hersheys chocolate syrup.
ReplyDeleteWell, chocolate candies with lime filling is good, so sherbet with syrup can't be all that bad.
DeleteGreat beach photos! Sorry about the trash problem. I think it's everywhere, which is a shame.
ReplyDelete...it's a mess sometimes on the beaches. Sometimes it's just too disheartening.
DeleteA good fisher-person always has a pair of needle nose pliers close by. Great photos of the water and birds too.
ReplyDelete...thanks Marilyn
Deletethose crashing waves do look pretty rough.
ReplyDeleteCoyote crash huh? Not a huge animal but capable of doing some damage
...on a highway at 70MPH...quite a bit of damage.
DeleteI love reading your posts. I felt so bad about the coyote situation. The photos of tern are wonderful. They are so interesting. Thanks for the "drive by shooting" comment. It made me laugh!
ReplyDeleteLOL....I couldn't resist.
DeleteGreat narrative and photos. I can almost feel the mist on my face and see the mustard-tipped bills of those terns.
ReplyDelete...thanks Ken.
DeleteI love the terns!
ReplyDelete(ツ) from Cottage Country Ontario , ON, Canada!
...glad you enjoyed the terns Jennifer.
DeleteI love the Royals! Sadly we don't have them here.
ReplyDelete...well, turn about is fair play, right? Your Costa's Hummers aren't here in my neck of the woods.
DeleteLoved the commentary, and the great shots of the waves and Terns. Have a wonderful day.
ReplyDelete...thanks Karen
DeleteNice wave captures!
ReplyDelete...thanks Linda
DeleteEnjoyed your post Anni. I love watching Terns ducking and diving over the water.
ReplyDeleteI really dislike it when people leave their cig butts lying around over here too!
Cheerio for now :D)
...thanks Susan.
DeleteI feel the same way about Washington, DC...so much to see and do there! Ahh...you were very lucky to have grown up the the Rockies as your backyard. Love those beautiful mountains! I think many of us feel the same way about Pres. Obama, sadly enough.
ReplyDelete....The Rockies are wonderful...Colorado was/is truly Colorful as the state nickname says...but did you know that the front range got hit with over a foot of snow just a day ago, and record breaking lows?!!! I'm too old for that kinda weather.
DeleteLOL! Yup, butts are dirty and should be kept off the ground. ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday!
xo Catherine
By golly, I think you got my 'gist' of the sign!!! You're the only one so far. Kudos Catherine.
DeleteBananas are something I try avoiding, but I do like other sweet and salty combinations.
ReplyDeleteI avoid OVER ripe bananas, does that count?
DeleteHi Anni, You brought a smile to my face today. Good luck in your redecorating/painting. Ours is done and we're enjoying the outcome. Think of me sometimes when you walk along the balmy coast - I'm still buried in white here in CO. It's been a long winter/spring of snow! (Still beautiful, though...)
ReplyDeleteSome friends of ours called us and told us of the 18" of snowfall in Northern front range over the weekend!!
DeleteGreat post, as always! I'm just sick when people throw their butts out the window and leave them everywhere, worst trash. Okay, try peanuts and red hots! Been to all of those wonderful places and would go back to all of them! I'm always crazy about your posts, sweet friend~
ReplyDeleteNancy, you continue to lift my spirits!!! You're as bright as sunshine...ummmm, that's "Yellow"...your favorite color.
DeleteI've been to every place you listed except Santa Fe (except just driving through) and Yellowstone. Would love to go to both! Was that coyote crash mayhem something that you had happen to you? Love the pictures. Great post!
ReplyDelete...yep, coyote mayhem happened to me and the car.
DeleteLoL I love you're #2 answer. ;o) oh you definetely should visit SF! I prefer the summer time for tourism or else it's too cold & windy. Unless you like cold and windy. :) Summers are gorgeous and not too insanely hot, which i love about the bay area.
ReplyDelete...that is one city I'd love to go visit again some day!!
DeleteHello there Anni. Long time no see huh? LOL. I just started back blogging again this week and I have noticed a lot of my friends no longer blog. I guess they prefer facebook better. Facebook has so much drama on there now and the only time I get on there is to play a couple of games that I got interested in. How in the world have you been doing? Me, I've been cooking a lot lately and been busy with my 2 girls. One has just recently graduated high school and I posted some pictures the other day. My youngest is in the 10th grade and will be in the 11th grade next year. They have literally grown up on me and I ain't liking it one bit. Sure do miss them being small tho. The only good thing is they are able to take care of themselves now since I have been in bad health for a while now. Take care and hope to see you sometime. Just thought I would drop by and pay you a visit.
ReplyDeleteKaren H.
OMGoodness Karen!!! You startled me. Well, not really, but hey...it's been a long, long time!! I'm happy to read you're back to blogging. You'll find a lot has changed over the months.
DeleteNothing makes me happier than spending time by the sea (and taking photos of it) - lovely shots.
ReplyDelete...thanks Sarah
Deletei've been to almost all the historical sites on the list! williamsburg, richmond, charlottsville, charleston, philly, san fran, yellowstone, savannah, dc, ...i really want to see new orleans!
ReplyDelete...someday I predict you'll see New Orleans.
DeleteLooks like a great place to see wildlife Anni... Interesting questions.... Michelle
ReplyDeleteFor sure the birds are a big plus on the islands! Thanks for hosting Michelle.
DeleteI'd love having the Rocky Mountains so close. They are so amazing to see.
ReplyDeleteThe sound of the sea is so therapeutic. Love the terns, Anni.
