Snails, Shells, Anchors, Clams, Starfish, Angels, Sand Dollars, Apothecary and more....Oh MY!!
I just don't walk on the shore and watch the waves or search out far to see if I can spot some dolphins, I'm busy looking down at times also. I go out on the beach, and carry my little plastic bucket sometimes...always searching for the perfect shell. I have purchased throughout the years, many apothecary jars, and since we've moved to the Gulf area, I put the jars to good use. I started putting the seashells inside them and then proceeded to use it all in a grouping along with Bud's Brass Anchor....

I love to find broken ones also...they too have a lot of beauty in them. At least I think so. I think it was Mustang Island where I found the perfect ---all in one, starfish. There's a trick to get them hardened once you get it home with you. I've found a lot of clam shells, angel-wing shells [they have the most beautiful 'abalone' iridescence on the inside with all the silvers, blues, greens & turquoise colors] --they are way too fragile. I can't tell you how many times they've shattered and crumbled on me from the beach to home! The sand dollars? They too are extremely delicate --so very easy to break. And to find one all in one piece, complete, is not only a miracle...it's good luck!! I've read somewhere that the best time to go beachcombing for shells is after a storm. But, no matter, it's all luck I think!! By the way, the brass anchor is about 12 inches long and VERY heavy. Bud had this before we married...I think he told me once he got this when on liberty from the ship he was on during his Navy days...stationed in the Caribbean somewhere. I like it! LOL

Oh, and the box the shells are all sitting on was made by dear man of mine...he restored an old chest, added rope handles on each side and carved the three ships' names and numbers. One in front...and one on each side. These ships are the three he was stationed on during his Navy tenure. USS O'Hare, USS J.D. Blackwood, and USS Tabbererer. And the bird painting above the box is one I painted called "Afternoon Repose"...seen in full here.

Envious, I'm greenPassionate, I'm purple
Sad, I'm blue
Pure, I'm white
Silent, I'm golden
Mellow, I'm yellow
Sometimes hues; stormy & dull...
But as witnessed, at the end, when all subsides;
in twilight years, after all the turmoil and strife,
it can be found by the horizon
As it betokens; the spectrum of the rainbow!

What a collection you got there. I dont have any shell in my collection. Thanks for sharing and thanks for stopping by. Have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteVery colorful 55.
ReplyDeleteI have some lamps and their bases are clear glass filled with seashells of all sorts I collected on beach vacations when my children were young. I cherish them as I know you cherish your treasures.
PG
I love all your shells - I'm still looking for dolphins. :)
ReplyDeleteYour 55 is so beautifully description of moods, I like it very much. :)
My 55 is up too.
The 55 was so beautifully done! Bravo!!!
ReplyDeleteOh, how I DO relate with your 55--in fact, it is ME. So many younger peeps seem to scoff when someone "old" tells about being at peace--happy. They just don't know. They have not got there yet. YET!
ReplyDeleteGreat 55. Life is like that . If all goes well at the end the rainbow.
ReplyDeleteI love your shell collection Anni. What a great idea to put them into glass jars so that you can see them all! We do not live near a beach, but whenever we travel to the beaches, we collect many shells and other sea treasures. I keep them in a basket. You have prompted me to move them to a glass vase.
ReplyDeletewhat a gorgeous photo and beautiful 55 to go with it!
ReplyDeleteYes, we all have a rainbow of emotion in us. Very well put.
ReplyDeleteGuess I haven't gotten there yet. A colorful peace seems unimaginable.
ReplyDeleteWow Annie I just loved this poem & picture today... Thanks

ReplyDeleteyour shells are gorgeous. gonna go looking for a sand dollar now. it's true they bring luck, remember that from childhood. completely forgot about it until now...
ReplyDeleteand what a stunning 55. colours and emotions, the auras, tied to the sky and it's many difference coats...
How lovely! When I was a kid, we could find stuff on the beach, it is rare here now. Very nice post,
ReplyDeleteCindy
Loved your poem Anni. You are so talented.
ReplyDeleteI used to collect shells and pebbles from the sea shore, but never got to display them in such a clever and lovely way as you have.
Love Granny
Very awesome shells.
ReplyDeleteAnni, you sure are obsessed with colors.
ReplyDeleteBut that is quite OK, thats a magnificent obsession!
Excellent 55 My Dear..
Thank you as always for your Marvelous contribution.

Wonderfull 55! Love the picture too.
ReplyDeleteYour shells are quite lovely. I like the way you have them displayed surrounded by special things such as the anchor, the bird painting and the chest.
Thanks for sharing.
that is as seriously cool way to display your shells...love it!
ReplyDeleteExcellent 55ve. Life is full of colors!
ReplyDeleteAnni,
ReplyDeleteYour collection of shells is awesome. I love the way you have them displayed in the apothecary jars. We found sand dollars once in Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, but left them as we knew they would never make it home. We also saw starfish there. Michelle was only about five years old, so that was many years ago. I would love to go to the Maritimes again. Very beautiful. I love standing on the rocks at Peggy's Cove with the waves breaking on the rocks. I was there once during a storm and it was awesome.
Those boxes Bud made are so unique and they certainly compliment your shell collection.
Enjoyed your Flash Friday, as always. We had a bad storm here late yesterday afternoon. I just posted about it.
Have a great day, my friend.
Blessings,
Mary
What a wonderful collection of shells. I always enjoy my visit with you. I hope you have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful pictures of the shells. It makes this Missouri Ozark farm chick homesick for her parents who live in Brownsville, TX. I'm a long way from the beach here in the hills and hollors. Enjoy this day your were given and God Bless!
ReplyDeleteLeave it to you to display your shells in such a delightful way! I love it!! The whole grouping, sitting on that box, with the picture behind the jars...well, it's all perfect! I used to have a collection of shells I had picked while in Vancouver, BC, but I ended up giving them to my neighbour next door whose bathroom has the ocean theme.
ReplyDeleteSo enjoyed your Friday 55 as well:-) xoxo
That 55 fits dragons as well it just taKES LONGER.
ReplyDeleteexcellent 55...there's always bound to be something beautiful at the end of a storm eh? :)
ReplyDeleteI love your 55 ~ so vibrant and moody! I too am a collector of shells ~ from my years at the beaches in Hawaii as well as Florida. My time in between was spent in Colorado...perhaps we were even neighbors at one time :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment on my 55 as well.
Ciao ~ Chef Kar
Your sea shell collection is lovely! I try my best to collect all sorts of shells with my children. We love to paint them. Thanks for sharing the ships Bud was on~I have my brother in law in the Navy and my 3 uncles were on ships during the 2nd World War. I too love the beach~all of God's beauty brings a smile to my face! God bless, Rose
ReplyDeleteThis whole posts compliments each other. I love the collection of shells and the colorful 55...very well done my friend. You are the bomb and have written some excellent things this week. Not to say you dont all the time but this and your rant and the Thursday Thunks well TREMENDOUS :)
ReplyDeleteI soooo love your collection. We have a beach theme in our house, shells, lighthouses and lots of nautical things.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to post some photos as soon as I figure out my new camera. Man is it complicated!!!
Love your 55 too!
Beautiful Shell collection~would love to see it again a year from now! ~Have fun collecting more!
ReplyDelete~Blessings Heather ;D
You are so very talented. I think the whole arrangement is great. Do you have a sunroom? I think this would look good there. Are you right on the gulf?
ReplyDeleteI have never seen an intact starfish(called sea stars, now, I believe) or a complete sand dollar.
When we were on the beach this time, only tiny shells were on the beach. I saw one man out in the tide pool sweeping a net and catching shells as they came in. I think most of them were in those pools and never made it ashore.
When we went to Naples in 2006, we collected some shells and I have those in a summer candle arrangement that I like to put on the table. Didn't use it this year because of the move.
Have a good weekend. It is supposed to be low humidity and in the 80s tomorrow so I'm planning a picnic.
Mama Bear
I tried to leave a comment early this morning, but seems like it didn't take. It was probably too long, and time ran out. Couldn't start over. I said how much I loved the way you displayed the shells. We just came back from Galveston and I gathered more to add to my collection. The different jars and shapes are just delightful!!
ReplyDeleteAnd I LOVED your 55 so much!!!
Your display of shells is so beautiful. You can tell it has taken a long time and fun to accumulate them. My favorite is the the first picture with the anchor. Your poem was also very nice. Have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteI love shells, too. They look so pretty in your display. I have only picked my own shells once, when I was on in Gulf Shores. All the rest came from house and estate sales. So I so envy you. Lake Michigan shells are about half an inch long...not much of a display!
ReplyDeleteWonderful collection of shells. I only have a few -- mostly from Matagorda Beach, but they are special to me because that is really the first beach I had visited.
ReplyDeleteYou have all your treasures so lovingly displayed. Great job with the photography also.
I love things from the beach, especially sea glass. The handmade chest that your collection is displayed on is wonderful!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by The Old Parsonage come back anytime, I love company.
Enjoy!

I was over at "theoldparsonage" and couldn't resist a name like "hooin' anni", sugar! How cute is that. I always try to visit bloggers I've never been to before.....but truthfully, I've embarrassed myself a few times by thinking I've never been there. How doofus is that I ask you? Oh well, I think I would have definitely remembered a name like that and also someone who admits to being over 50! Me too, chickee.......
ReplyDeleteNice meeting you and you might like to drop over and giggle a bit with me.
:-) <------- ME smilin' at ya......
xoxo,
Connie
You have some beautiful shells, Anni. I have some of those starfish, covered in red, blue, green and silver glitter and I've Blutacked them to the big mirror frame in my bathroom. Most effective.
ReplyDeleteYou always write such lovely poems. I especially liked your use of colors. Flash 55 is a good medium for poetry.
ReplyDeleteFind my Flash 55 for this week HERE.
you got so many pretty shells! love them all
ReplyDeleteWow what a beautiful shell collection! How sweet of your hubster to make the box!
ReplyDeleteI thought it would be nice to 'victimize' you today. There's a tag for you at my blog :-) Kindly check it out when you have time.
OMG, the shells on the dark turg or teal are just beautiful. I have sea glass and some shells. My lake house is my beach house with lighthouses, pelicans and shells, beach furniture, ect. I really like your post and I am jealous(hehe) that you can walk on the beach anytime.
ReplyDeleteHappy Saturday.
Barbara
PS If you ever want to sell the pelican watercolor, please let me know.
ReplyDeleteBarbara
Love that shell collection and especially how you have it displayed! What a treasure!
ReplyDeleteI love the shells. . . especially the sand dollar. I love the seashore so I am particularly partial to them.
ReplyDeleteThat's just like they would display them on HGTV. You did good! They look fantastic!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful 55! :)
ReplyDeleteI need to get some jars like that. I have a feeling Sophia is going to help me fill them with pretty rocks. :P
