Lovely weather!!! On Wednesday I took a drive to Calallen Texas where the river runs through the park and two ponds and hawkwatch platform attracts birders and birds that are migrating and/or permanent residents. My first few minutes there, before I even parked my car to walk, I spotted four white tailed deer. Didn't even get out of the car but rolled the window down and took a few photos of them before I continued driving the park loop to stop at the platform and begin my walk. While on the hawkwatch area, a gentleman photographer asked me if there is a way to get to the ponds from there. I gave him directions and then stayed on the deck a while longer watching all the cardinals in the trees. They were everywhere I looked. Dozens of them. And, pretty since the trees are budding out and a beautiful contrast with the red birds and clear blue sky. As I began my step count, I ended up on the nearby incline to the larger pond. As I walked the trail, I was sure I saw a rabbit in the tall 'unmowed' grasses and brush. But, then, as I continued walking the pathway to the pond, I convinced myself it WASN'T a rabbit. Too large a critter. Well, by the time I got to the observation box to look out onto the pond, the gentleman who asked for directions was there. He said "Did you see the bobcat in the brush?" I guess maybe I did and didn't realize it!!
The ponds were quite filled with waterfowl. I saw ducks, egrets, herons, stilts, sandpipers, and such. The smaller pond, from a distance I could see more egrets and herons. Then, from a long distance I could hear the call of a kingfisher! I climbed out of the brush, walked around the curve in the park's road and stopped at the smaller of the two watering holes! There in the tree, just as pretty as could be was a large male kingfisher. He was a great specimen and posed for all of us avid bird watchers for some time. Cars, walkers, and joggers were all stopped on the road, watching.
After taking my photos, I walked more. Stopped to turn off the road and walk the boardwalk back into the dense woods along the river. A hawk flew away as I rounded the corner...then, nothing. I could hear a kiskadee [found it]. Enjoyed the quiet of the river and taking photos of the Spanish Moss hanging from the trees. When I left the park, a Cooper's Hawk bid me farewell along the exit road.
Along the way home, I stopped a few more times, to get gas!! [choking all the way as the pump told me the price was gonna break the bank!] -then I walked along the back field nearby and got some beautiful photos of the Texas State Flower, the Bluebonnet. As I predicted, at least right now, the blossoms are quite scarce because of the drought conditions. Then, to the grocery store for bottled water and fruit for our lunch. We had leftover sausage pizza, cottage cheese, and bananas. Not all that healthy, but still good. After lunch, I worked some more to get my blog[s] background black and white polka dots. It shows okay from my perspective, I hope it fills the background on mobiles, laptops, desktops of others, and isn't too much of a strain on our eyeballs-lol.
I will share some photos in a few posts to keep it from being so heavy. For now, the four deer...

What a great morning you had.

DeleteHello, Love the cute deer, great photos. I am thankful our state governor Hogan temporarily removed the state gas tax, the price went down some .30 cents. Every little bit helps. Wonderful bird sightings, I had a glimpse of a Bobcat in Florida. They are cool critters. Take care, have a happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a winner!
DeleteAnni, sounds like you had a picture perfect day! Beautiful captures of the deer. Reminds me of a time I spent a week in the Pocono Mountains and would see deer all day long. They have such sweet faces and eyes.
ReplyDeleteI don't own a car, but I've been hearing from so many people who do, about the steep spike in gas prices. What I've noticed is the spike in food cost at the grocery store. Every time I go to Trader Joe's, the cost of things keep increasing. And by A LOT.
Have a terrific weekend, my friend!
Steep gas/fuel prices are keeping food prices sky high!
DeleteYour photos are just beautiful, as always, and I like the small black and white polkadots!
ReplyDeleteThanks M&M
DeleteSo glad you had such a fruitful day out and even had a close encounter with a bobcat. Gas is a bit of a shock here but not as bad as some states. In fact it has come down a bit since last week. There is hope.
ReplyDeleteLove those deer. Such beautiful, gentle animals.
I am trying to keep the gas tank no lower than 1/2.
DeleteLovely deer. Gas is bouncing up and down almost daily here. I'm so glad I have a plug-in hybrid.
ReplyDeleteWe've been to the lake and it's the time of year for duck variety: buffleheads, mergansers, redheads, surf scoters, and the usual mallards. We were treated to a close view of the bald eagle as it dipped onto our shoreline while flying. So thrilling.
Bald eagles are rare here, if non-existent.
DeleteThe background looks good on my phone. The deer are beautiful...you got some great shots. Love the lighting. I look forward to the rest of your photos.
ReplyDeleteThat's kind of you to say Rose, thanks.
DeleteI know you are over the moon and beyond happy to get back on your happy trails with your camera. wow on a bobcat! the deer are so pretty. Gas prices are so NOT pretty. LOVE the mini polk dots.. and the new look of your blog.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandra
DeleteAnni YAY x 100 I'm with you the weather here has finally turned back to spring...we had way too many summer days of late and humidity.
ReplyDeleteI hope to take a stroll later too
Hugs and Happy Trekking Weekend
Cecilia
Been wintry here...now, spring has arrived!!
DeleteSplendid captures of these deer bathed in the warm sunlight! You mentioning the rolling down of windows reminds me of how tame the deer here are to humans. The deer here come running to the cars when windows roll down thinking that we will be feeding them food. Thankfully, no close encounter with the bobcat. Have a fantabulous weekend!
ReplyDeleteCan't feed 'em in parks. Here.
DeleteIt sounds like you really had a great day taking photos and seeing so many birds and deer. Yes, spring birds have returned and ducks and geese are planning families.
ReplyDeleteI won't be getting much done these days...birding will keep me busy.
DeleteWow what a banquet of wildlife!!
ReplyDeleteMaybe that bobcat was a bit too close for comfort... We used to see the resident bobcat at the county park when we lived in Pacifica, CA. It was always a thrill.
Can't wait to see more of your excursion photos, especially the cardinals and the blossoms.
Sue
Scary thought was I didn't know. lol
DeleteYES! You have tiny polka dots, and a cool Magpie Header. Which is of course black and white and matches the polka dots. Great deer shots. But my question to you is this. Walking in bushy areas and all over, weren't you in danger from the Bobcat? I believe they like to remain hidden, but still, weren't you both in the same area?
ReplyDeleteYes, within 10 yards of it.
DeleteWhat a fantastic walk that was seeing so much wildlife and your photos of it are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe little white polk-a-dots on the black background look great.
Thanks Karen.
DeleteBob Cat???
ReplyDeleteAnd you just kept walking around??????
Pardon me, while I just faint, for a bit.
Faint...
Faint...

Since you mentioned it... It is a wee bit eye dazzzzzzzling. The very tiny polk-a-dots. -grin-
ReplyDelete🐴💛🐴
Yep, close encounter and I didn't realize it.
DeleteThanks for the layout comment too.
DeleteAs always, a visual feast! Wish I could have gotten a photo like that of my albino deer. I am always amazed when you describe the things and creatures you encounter. You are giving me an entirely different perspective of what I encountered when I was briefly there or passed through. Very much looking forward to the rest of the photos from your day - especially the kingfisher and the moss. Who would have guessed there was Spanish moss there? But, duh...you are south LOL. ~Robin~ (LOVE the polka dots!)
ReplyDeleteThe better photos of birds seen will be shown in my bird blog eventually. Not this week tho.
DeleteBeautiful deer. I do hope you got some pictures of the Cardinals. That may be the only way I get to see them.
ReplyDeleteYes, I got lots of cardinal photos. I will post the best ones on my bird blog.
DeleteWhat an amazing birding day you had!!! I've never heard of a Kiskadee but I googled it and found its a very handsome bird with an interesting song/call.
ReplyDeleteToo bad you didn't get a better look at that bobcat. When we lived in the country I remember coming around the corner of a shed and coming face to face with one. I didn't have time to be afraid. It turned around so fast and took off.
They have a very unique song....listen closely and it sounds like "kiss-kadee".
DeleteWhat a lovely walk! I like the deer.
ReplyDeleteIt was a great morning walk.
DeleteI'm so glad you can do it again. 😊
ReplyDeleteMe too
DeleteGlad you are doing your day tripping again! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your pictures!
ReplyDeleteWeather and wildlife is once again a priority. 😊
DeleteOnce again, I enjoyed walking with you. There are quite a few kingishers here. I see them mostly on the poles along the water, but too far for my camera phone to take a good picture. Although you know I love your bird stories, today I mostly enjoyed the quiet of the river. Happy, peaceful weekend, Annie.
ReplyDeleteWhen you are this far south, the river current is slow!!!
DeleteSound like a lovely walk.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on and stay safe
😊
DeleteI'm pleased you can do it again :)
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Me too
DeleteThank you for sharing this great walk with us Anni. I have also enjoyed your others subsequent to this posting. Loved each and every photo :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Denise!
