After I married Bud, I went straight!! I want to get this out in the open. I want to talk candidly and honestly about my teen-aged addiction.
While in high school, I had all my credits that would enable me to graduate a year earlier than my class. I opted to gain extra credit toward college by continuing my education through the work force, and in my senior year, the only class that was required to take was an English class...but, as an elective. I could choose which class I thought would interest me the most. I chose English Lit...mainly Shakespeare. My teacher and may I add my favorite teacher in the whole school...Mrs Sanderson, taught the class. We enacted Shakespeare plays, read his writings, even took several field trips to Denver and the surrorunding areas for theatrical shows and movies.
But this is not confessing my addiction at all, I'm skirting the issue...
You see, I had the class at 7:30 a.m. for an hour. I had then 30 minutes to walk from school to where my job was. As I walked, I took it upon myself to do my addiction before reaching the workplace. Sometimes when my supply was low, I'd stop and get them refilled over my lunch hour from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. Depending on how my funds were from one pay day to the next, I would replenish them as much as my cash flow would allow. Then, I was a happy camper for days, maybe weeks until my supply began to run short once again...
I have to be honest, I was so "into" this addiction, nothing much else kept me happy as when I had it in my posession. Now, as my years are waning into the twighlight years, I oftentimes think of those days way back when, when I thought I couldn't live without it. Until recently I couldn't even remember what it was called. But all of a sudden, out of the blue, it came to me!! And I quickly got online to research it and maybe think that if I DID find it again, I'd buy some....
IT'S IMPORTED CANDY!!
It's called Regal Crown, and I used to buy it at a restaurant as I paid for my lunch. It was the 'sourest' of sour cherry hard drop candy. It was so sour, that literally as you unwrapped one [about 10 drops to a roll], your mouth would pucker. Have you ever eaten a raw tart pie cherry right off the tree? If you have, then you'd know the tartness!!!! So, good. Funny thing is, Bud, who lived in the same town I did, used to buy the same brand, imported, but his preference was the lemon. Okay. Years have gone by, we talk about the good ol' days, and sometimes they would frequently come up in our conversation. Once I remembered the brand name, I went online and typed in Regal Crown Cherry. All kinds of websites. Some are out of stock...this is a brand of yesteryear remember. The company, in England, has sold all the rights, and some reviews say the candy itself isn't like it used to be in the 60s and 70s. I'll be the judge. I ordered some. And I anticipate the arrival from England. I just may feel that "high" again, real soon.

How awesome that you could find and buy some! I do hope you will post a comparison once you have eaten them!
ReplyDelete...it's been 50+ years. The candy may have not changed, but my taste buds may have. I'll let you know.
DeleteI hope they haven't changed it too much. Andy and I keep looking for Keebler French Vanilla Cream cookies at the store, even though they have been discontinued for years (over twenty? thirty?)... wsy too long. So our fingers are crossed for you...we understand.
ReplyDeleteI too understand your search. All good things are worth looking for to satisfy our craving.
DeleteHello Anni,
ReplyDeleteIt is great you found the candy and was able to order them online. I hope they taste the same as you remember. Take care, enjoy your day!
Me too. Just thinking about them makes me salivate.
DeleteLOL, that is so funny. I do hope the candy hasn't changed too much. Hopefully they don't put that horrid "high fructose corn syrup" in it, which has ruined the taste of everything if you ask me. I always look for jellies and such that do not contain the HFCS. Now you have me wondering about those sour cherry candies, and wondering if I would like them, wondering what they taste like, and wondering where I could find some....see? Addiction is contagious!! Watch out! LOL. Let us know when they arrive, and we'll all be right over to sample them! Hope you ordered a lot!
ReplyDeleteI feel confident it'll be good, no matter
DeleteI have never seen or heard of the but I do love sweet tart things like the lemon drops. At first I thought it was the old Cherry Lifesavers my dad had an addiction to Lifesavers. He carried a package of Lifesavers in his pocket every time he left the house along with this Tums. My mouth is puckered right now from thinking about the tart cherry they have tart cherry juice that's like seven or eight dollars a small bottle and it's supposed to be good for gout so I bought one for Bob to drink a few ounces each day and I fell in love with it and I had to stop buying it because I kept getting in it
ReplyDeleteOh wow...that juice sounds delicious!
DeleteOh my, clean for all these years and now you are going to fall off the wagon. I do hope you let us know how the experience goes and if they are the same as you remember.
ReplyDeleteI know...my bad.
DeleteHow you have revived teenage years for me too, Anni!
ReplyDeleteI used to be addicted to "rainbow drops"...little puffs of rice covered in highly flavoured and brightly covered candy dust.
Like you, I just couldn't get through the school day without them!😉
I wonder...maybe if I look them up online I may find them again?
Definitely worth a try. I feel the old cravings rising again!!😂
Thank you so much for this delightfully evocative post...I really enjoyed!
Hugs xxx
We both suffered addictions!
DeleteIsn't the Internet amazing? There is almost nothing you can't find. You do know where this entry addiction can lead don't you?:)) Seriously, can't wait to see if they have held up to your standards.
ReplyDeleteLet us know.
I think I was lucky to find they're still around!
DeleteI'm so glad you were able to find it again and hope it's as good as you remember! :)
ReplyDeleteI hope so too!
DeleteOh, gosh. I remember these. My dad liked them, and I used to get them out of a vending machine at the old A&P where we went to the grocery store every Saturday. Wow.
ReplyDeleteI really hope they taste the same for you.
I don't recall seeing them in vending machines...bummer
DeleteI found them on OldTimeCandy.com but never tasted any. Sour candy is not my favorite. My favorite was sen-sens. They are no longer available! Hope you're not disappointed and hope you will love your sour cherry candy as before.
ReplyDeleteI remember those too!
DeleteJust by your description my mouth puckered up andjaw aches. . .Must have been some taste. I hope they stay the same. Have a grand day!
ReplyDeleteSo do I!
DeleteI kept waiting for the punchline, to find out what addiction you might have had. Great post! I enjoyed it thoroughly. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou know me too well to know it was pretty innocent, don't you?
DeleteOMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG..... Regal Crown!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I saw the picture you posted, my mouth *instantly* started to water, Ann. I loved these crazy things back in the day. Oh, please DO tell us whether or not they taste the same, would you? So much in life has changed, it would be wonderful to know that Regal Crown is still the same. ~Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping they didn't alter the recipe once the company was sold to others!
DeleteNever had them but I understand addictions. There have been several things over they years for us. Seems every time we say it out loud. They can no longer be purchased. WE love Archway cookies with orange icing...lemon is good too but orange OH MY!! I haven't looked online maybe I should.
ReplyDeleteI hope your Regal Crown Cherry is just as good as you remember it.
Hugs Cecilia
I remember lemon frosted. But orange I did not see anywhere.
DeleteI've never heard of it but I'm so glad that you found it! I love SweetTarts so I can only imagine that I would love this too.
ReplyDeleteI used to eat those too. Our kids liked 'em
DeleteA nice storyline that lures us in to the end to discover your addiction! Thankfully, it was so innocent. :-)
ReplyDeleteBut, did I have you going in another direction at any point?
DeleteLove your addiction and how you tell us about it.
ReplyDeleteI think I have had some of those in my youth too.
The more sour the better..I can feel myself puckering up right now.
I hope they are as good as you remember them.
Sue
I've been known to "hit the bottle" too....of dill pickle brine!
DeleteThat sounds like a pretty safe addiction . Hope you still enjoy these as much as years ago. I recently had the chance to some candy, which I fondly remembered from childhood. Sad to say I didn’t like it at all and no one else did either.
ReplyDeleteA sugar high
DeleteThat's so cool! I think the Vermont Country Store carries lots of olden candies and such. Unfortunately, the old Zwieback (teething) crackers I used to love have gone the way of the dinosaur.
ReplyDeleteI remember buying those crackers when our kids were teething. I don't think I ever tried them tho.
DeleteYou had me going there. Glad to hear that your addiction was candy!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a candy person, but I just may be addicted to ice cream. :)
Frozen yogurt for me. With bananas/pecans/caramel sauce. lol
Delete:) I hope it's as good as you remember, but I have a feeling it won't be.
ReplyDeleteGlad that's the extent of your addiction!
Tastes do change over the years.
DeleteI do hope they are as good as they used to be. Yes, have eaten pie cherries. One of my daughters and a kid down the street would sit and eat a whole quart! I am not kidding. I could eat a few, but not like that.
ReplyDeleteAfter eating a quart in one sitting I'd be doing the 1 2 3 quick step the next day (if not before). If you know what I mean.
DeleteWhat a hoot! I can't wait to find out if they are as good as you remembered. Great story!
ReplyDeleteI hope so too. Thanks Denise.
DeleteIt's something to think about...some happy childhood memories perhaps.
