If Life is Making You Lonely - You Can Always Go DOWNTOWN...

On Monday [May 11th], our 52nd anniversary went without any celebrating outside the home...the first time EVER! The special day just blended in the week like any other day. Sad, but probably necessary. Maybe, like we promised ourselves, we'll make up for it when we can lead a normal lifestyle and go out on the town sometime. Hope it's sooner than later.

It's been very quiet around Hootin' Anni's abode here of late. Crocheting a bit, reading [by the way, I had to go to Walmart and purchase this...Sandra blogged about] -at least I think this is what she bought-[a pillow pad], yard work, and doing a lot of napping during the day. It's a bit boring right now. Ya, I have gone for walks around the parks and on Mother's Day I drove to the islands. All in all - I think I've said this already...boring!!!!

The reason I had to buy me the pillow pad was because, the book I ordered and finally opened the shipping package, the book is the weight of a set of encyclopedias!!! And huge in dimensions. There is just no way I could hold up the book and read it for more than a minute or two. Now, with the pillow pad, it's doable! And, yes, I'm still the kind of person that wants to hold a book, not a reader. [I have a Kindle Reader, but the battery hasn't been charged in years, and it's just collecting dust. I bought it so I could buy the books that I wanted and the print was so small, so I could enlarge it to a print that was better and needed no reading glasses. Still, it's just not like holding a book in my hand and the odor of printed paper and old school reading. Take me back 20-30 years BEFORE Kindle, and I'm a happy reader.] Besides, I like to collect books as Bud does. We've had a special room since the beginning of our marriage...a library. I like going into the room with shelves and shelves of books at my disposal, to sit back in my over-stuffed chair and READ while holding a collector's item in my hand.  It gives me pleasure; not at all like holding a piece of plastic and clicking to turn the pages instead of turning actual paper pages.  With a Kindle is cold and too electronic, with a real book, it's warm and comforting.

I also went and walked downtown.  Just for a change of pace and scenery.  I ended up at my usual park, but while walking in the area, I took photos of a partial part of the skyline and the city/county buildings near the park...

high-rise buildings looking toward the bay from the courthouse

Central Library [adjacent to the park I frequent]

Our church [Catholic] -on the bluff. It's on a hill, looking down to Corpus Christi Bay and Shoreline Drive.

The Sky view of the Historic Blucher Home [1800s] [now a bed and breakfast]. The Blucher family donated the property across the street from the home for a central city park with the stipulation it must be kept as a bird sanctuary [Mrs. Blucher was an avid birder].

At the front entrance to Blucher Park, the city and Audubon society constructed a Chimney Swift structure. They nest ONLY in chimneys!!!

Later, on another post, I'll share some scenes of the park...

  2. Hello, the pillow pad is a great idea. I did see Sandra's, I have been using a small pillow. The Chimney Swift structure is cool, I have seen one somewhere on my travels. Wishing you a happy day!

Oh how alike we are Anni! I collect books and have loved them ever since I was a child.
I have a library upstairs and downstairs filled to the brim with hundreds of books on many different subjects. I can never have enough books!
I also have the book pillow mine is gray.
Hugs and have a great day!!!

  4. My KIndle was pretty much retired until this pandemic made it impossible to get books from the library. I keep hoping all this will just make for some stories to tell each other one day. I sure need a haircut! :-)

  5. Belated Happy 52nd Anniversary!!

I also love to read 'real' books. There's just something about holding one in your hands, plus I can mark things that speak to my heart, make notes, etc.

Thanks for sharing a bit of your downtown. Enjoy each day. ~ FlowerLady

    1. I would never mark my books. Maybe make notes on a slip of paper, but writing in books is a big no-no for me.

  6. same pillow. i love mine. i will be posting about my newest 2 purchases, so get your charge card ready.. ha ha... i always loved public library but am way to cheap to buy books, i used to buy used papaer backs and read and trade them in for more. then eyes got to bad to read even with my glasses, i could read but not for hours and i read for hours. the large print books hurt my hands. just glad we all have a choice. i know many people who love books, just having them. my brother does. he has built in shelves floor to ceiling in their dining room. nothing in there but table and 8 chairs and walls covered in books. they make him happy. I once asked if he had read all of them, he said no but can if i want to. stay at home has been easier on me than on you and a few others that go out and about all the time. i can't tell any difference in my life except i dont go to the Y and TOPS meetings. and i miss wandering in Dollar Tree

  7. Belated Happy 52nd. Sure hope things calm down enough for you to celebrate. Though the 52 years should be enough celebration.
I am on team Kindle and have totally swung over to the dark side. When I moved, the weight of all my books was a chore. Now I can carry 400 books in one hand and no dusting. All a matter of what floats our boats.

  8. Yep, I love a real book too. I also have a Kindle but as you said, it hasn't been charged for a long time. Happy Anniversary!! Our anniversary was April 24th and we didn't "do" anything either, but that's not odd for us. We seldom went anywhere or did anything before the virus. I think that makes US "odd", more than likely. *haha* I so loved the pictures you posted, Anni. What a lovely area you live in! I wish we lived somewhere that lended itself to an easy walk. I'm still heartbroken over a house we "missed" a couple years ago that bordered on a county park... with miles of walking trails. Oh well, that ship has sailed... but I'm still sad over it. Love, Andrea xoxo

  9. Happy 52nd Anni and Bud!! I hear you on the celebrating currently. Our 50th was 2/14 which was B.V. shutdown. We did go out for a nice supper at our favorite steakhouse. We had planned on a trip across the Pond late summer. Thankfully we had not made reservations. Maybe next year....????
Like you we have been taking walks in places we haven't been in years, downtown.
    Your church is beautiful.
Being retired we a ok with being home; however,we did have certain things we did on certain days that helped distinguish one day from the other 6 now they are all the same.

Hugs to you, B and Mr. I

  14. I feel the exact same way about books, yah, I am not the only one!! Going into Barnes & Noble and standing in the center of the store smelling is like a hit of a rug for me. I love the smell and feel of new books. We have a couple tablets, but no dedicated electronic reader.I love watching the Swifts circle round and round for so long before diving in the chimney. They must circle for over a half hour - do you know why they do that? How do you like the new book? The courthouse is beautiful!

  16. I have always know that I was unique and different from other people. I happen to love read on my iPad as opposed to a book. I even read my Bible on it. If ind it so much easier to read the bright screen. I have considered getting a pillow like that for my iPad.

  18. Happy Anniversary, even if it is late! That looks like a nice library....I love my kindle, but love my books, too. I really can read longer on the kindle. There are probably a dozen or so books that I have both the physical copy and the kindle version. It is funny...there were always two things I noticed about anyone I met and was at their house. It was what books they had and what music.

I like you city shots - so different from your usual, but pretty in a different way.
I have a kindle that I use all the time. It's very handy because it's easier to bring with me and have lots of books, but I do like the real thing better.

  22. Coming late to the party here, but just wanted to add my 2 cents. I much prefer reading a real book to my kindle. I also enjoy the lure of libraries and bookstores (old and new). But I do understand how much easier the kindle is to carry around as well as the ease of reading when one can enlarge small print. But there are ‘some’ books that simply must be owned in real book form.
