Believe in What Your Heart is Saying....

DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN it’s so.’ Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? VIRGINIA O’HANLON 115 WEST NINETY-FIFTH STREET
VIRGINIA, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, VIRGINIA, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

[above photo] I found this Special Edition LIFE magazine at the grocery store checkout the other day, and somehow it miraculously ended up in my cart. Another miracle---it ended up home, and I was ever so pleased to see it waiting for me to open its cover and read it. However you say it, Santa Claus, St. Nick, Papa Noel, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle --- in ANY language, the jolly ol' elf exists in the hearts of all, young and old. I'd like to take this time to share some of the inside pages; hopefully without breaking any copyright laws as I'm not intending to do so. The pages, along with reading the history and viewing the heartwarming photos, I can't just sit, read, and SAVE this magazine [I plan on framing it] without first letting you in on some of the legend [and truths] - including Virginia. I took my cell phone and went snap happy. I'm sure at least ONE will tug at your heart strings...

I love seeing the wide-eyed innocence of the eager to please, and so trusting to believe. My favorite Christmas Santa stories are:The Polar Express [both book and movie]. It only confirms what I've always thought...Santa DOES exist.  And, Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, and the newer novella of Dickens himself written by Samantha Silva, Mr. Dickens and His Carol [which I will re-read in a day or two and critiqued last year in this post].

PS---Speaking of movies, hmmm, why is the singular of movie M O V I E instead of MOVY? Plural - Drop the 'y" in movy, add i e s and you have movies!!  I think we should boycott any movie until they right the wrong. #MOVY [jk]

  1. What an awesome find.

  2. THAT was quite a find! Santa? I believe.

  3. now I am wondering how you will frame a magazine? page by page? the whole book? all the photos look like my childhood... that is the way santa looked in the 40's and 50's.. I don't think children these days believe like we did, they know to much

  4. Lovely that this issue, has been republished. With the world-famous reply to that Letter To The Editor. -smile- As well as the photos.

    "Jingle bells, jingle bells,
    jingle all the way..."

    1. I fell in admiration for its contents!

  5. Loved the little girl kissing Santa. Sadly I agree with Sandra. Kids are exposed to too much too early.

  6. So this is the famous letter to Virginia!! I don't think I have ever read it before. And the book is lovely, with such good pictures. It was really a wonderful holiday find!

  7. You certainly captured the wonderful feeling of love and trust that exists in the hearts of so many of us. Thank you for sharing this with me, and I am delighted to have been able to see so much of this edition. Thank you again! :-)

  8. I have had a magazine or book jump into my cart and force me to take it home. I must say, it doesn't happen much anymore, since I can look at everything on the internet.

  9. I wonder if either store here in town has this might jump into my cart, too. I seldom buy any magazines, but I did have two quilt magazines jump into mine a week or two ago. I might make this a third.

  10. I love spirit of Christmas and all it means

  11. It's kinda sad that kids nowadays dont believe in Santa anymore

  12. Hello, what a great find, love the old Santa photos and the letter. Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy weekend ahead!

  13. I just must find this magazine! When our children were small, I can remember being asked, "When are you going to tell them that there's not a real Santa." Well, I never did because my mom never told me!

    1. If you like him, you'll LOVE the magazine.
