...the storm
The morning started out with overcast skies. I left to walk a bit. The humidity was high, the surf was up. I knew a storm was brewin' out in the west. Before I returned to the car to get on my way back home, I received a text weather alert from *806319 [emergency alerts]. It told me that a goodly chance of severe weather was about to happen in my county, thunderstorms, high winds at 60MPH plus, and heavy rainfall. Yet, I lingered outdoors. I sat by the car along Packery Channel and watched the herons watching a fishermen pull in his catch. Once in the car, heading out from the channel's parking lot, I turned toward the causeway and put the pedal to the metal to get over the bridge before the rain....the clouds were ominous, and blackened. I figured I was in for a bumpy ride!!! By the time I got off the causeway bridge and dropping down into the suburb of Flour Bluff, I was driving in flooding rains. I pulled off and stopped in Walmart to sit this storm out. I bought something I've been thinking of doing for months. Some project that I haven't done in probably 55-60 years. [more on this in a bit] I had plenty of time to browse all the aisles. lol I texted Bud and told him I was waiting out the storm [I hydroplaned once already I didn't want to do it again and lose control of the car before arriving home, safely]. Once the storm subsided enough for me to drive slowly, I got home...opened the garage door with the remote, got out of the car, walked out the opening, and took photos of my Easter Lilies in the front yard, closed the garage door and BAM....the power went off. No electricity for two hours Hot and miserable inside.
So...during all the heavy, street flooding rains for a couple of days, we kept busy indoors. Besides reading and movies on our TV we did some of this and that...

Rain drenched Lilies...
...we finished a jigsaw puzzle

Since I had plenty of time in Walmart, I walked over to the craft/sewing aisles. Picked out some stuff, and went through the iron-on transfers. OWLS. The other stuff was a yard each of light brown, off white, and olive green material. And some EMBROIDERY THREAD. I am going to attempt to embroidery the owls on 12"x12" squares [without the days of the weeks...that will be cut off before transferring them to the cloth] - if all goes well, I will make a quilt. I even may buy some alphabet transfers and write Hootin' Anni at the bottom strip. That remains to be seen tho. Oh....btw, I have to find my embroidery hoops [I have metal myself, but I know I still have my mother's also. Her's is antique..wooden.]

By mid afternoon, the storm passed us and was on its way to Houston and Louisiana. The sun came out, the power was restored. I finished my afternoon by making Butter Pecan cupcakes with pecan-coconut icing. Painted the birdbath and admired another blooming amaryllis.

before - - - after
Well, it has finally stopped raining here. We have had 10.75 inches between noon and midnight. Enough already!!
ReplyDeleteIt tends to suffocate us ... and it's not Summer yet
DeleteIt looked like rain here yesterday but it never came. Of course our temps are way lower than yours, only in the 50s yesterday.
ReplyDeleteThose owls would make a great quilt and I like the idea for the bottom strip. Instead of a alphabet transfer you could also write it by hand with a transfer pen.
A transfer pen? Never heard of such a thing. I'll have to check it out.
DeleteThe puzzle is breathtaking...I'd be very content doing this and that with you
ReplyDeleteHugs Cecilia
Come join me then, we have a new puzzle started
Delete, & more cupcakes to share.
I look forward to seeing what you end up with. Those owls look like they will be fun to make into a quilt. And the puzzle is simply amazing. Glad you were smart enough not to try to drive through that rain. :-)
ReplyDeleteI heart jigsaw puzxles!
Deletelove those lilies... you did what I would do, wait out the storm indoors and no better place than Wally World to wait... of course I would not be in the craft aisle, since I have nary a single craft gene in my body... glad you got inside the garage before the power was off, you would have had to park in the rain and walk in it to.....
ReplyDeleteWell, if I'd gone to the home improvement aisles, I would have picked out wall paint. If that was the case, I would have to keep driving north all the way to Canada...Bud hates it when I decide to paint walls. Lol
DeleteYour lilies are gorgeous! You were brave to linger after the storm announcement. This project is huge and wonderful. Will you keep the quilt? I am so glad you were not hurt in the storm! The bird bath turned out well. I LOVE the jigsaw, and want to buy one. Where did you get it? How many pieces? Surely you will not take it apart!
ReplyDeleteI believe this puzzle was walmart. I've also seen the very same online at amazon. BUFFALO puzzle brand (500 pcs.)
DeleteI will wait & see about the quilt.
Sounds lie your time waiting out the storm was well spent. Love the Lily shots.
ReplyDeleteTime will tell. I found my hoops, now to get started.
DeleteThat was a dark sky! You used that time well. :) The bird bath looks great!
ReplyDeleteReally dark & lots of lightning.
DeleteI'm a real chicken when it comes to being out and about in thunderstorms. We hydroplaned once and I never want to do it again! I admire your savvy to get to a safe place quickly. The embroidery project sounds wonderful. I used to embroider a lot, but gave all supplies away to granddaughters. One has become quite proficient at the art. P.S. I know you are aware that lilies are deadly to cats!
ReplyDeleteSo many plants are lethal to cats & dogs alike.
DeleteLoved the part about the herons watching the fisherman pull in his catch. I can just see this in my mind's eye.
ReplyDeleteThey wait for hand-outs, as you probably know. 😊
