So...early on a mild morning this week, I found myself driving just before sunrise, to see if I could find two birds for the week. One, I've seen before, but never got a decent photo of it for my photo framed walls. The other, a rare bird, one of which I've never seen before, that was sighted in a small community between the interstate 69 Corridor and Portland, Texas. [this photo is of some of the oil refineries along the outskirts of the city...just before the sun came up.]
After trying to find the 'one that got away' without a good photo, and not finding it...I left that area and headed to my other planned destination...When i got to the highway sign that said "Bayside" I veered to exit, and crossed the railroad tracks, to come up on a street sign that shows me Highway 136...but the sign also showed me a two-way arrow!!! 🡸136🡺 Hmmmm, I guessed I could go either way and get heading in the right direction!! I turned right. Driving through the "Hub" of Woodsboro, Texas. Nuttin' there but worn down business establishments. I really wanted to "get out of Dodge" and onto the farmland where the 2nd rare bird was last reported seen. It's about 20 miles between Woodsboro and Portland...with Bayside in between.
Driving for what seemed an eternity, I finally spotted another highway sign that told me I was on FM1360!!! I knew I was headed in the right direction 'cause the car's navigation system showed "South". But, 1360...a FM [farm to market]?!! "Must be a highway 'spur' that'll eventually get me ON State Highway 136". Or, was I lost?!! This accompanying photo is about the time I said "I feel lost and all alone...who will rescue me?" Eventually, after seeing near the entire route nothing but farmland and plowed cotton fields, I came to an end...finally the highway heading into Portland and then, over the causeway to Corpus Christi, and home. I did see cotton...lots of cotton. It looked like snow!!
...Altho I didn't find the rare bird in any of the plowed fields as reported, I DID FIND a gaggle of Snow Geese...another species I've been hoping to find...chasing reports of them also ... for over six years' time frame. And in the 'flock' of geese, there were some rare dark morphs...a slate blue-gray species. I got pictures for my bird photo blog.

So, all in all, the day wasn't a total loss.
I see there are still a lot of wide open spaces even there in east Texas
ReplyDeleteI would love to see Snow Geese!
Have a wonderful day!
Well...we're not east Texas...more South...just on the coast...but, yes,...LOTS of open land!
Deletei thought the photo was snow and wondered where you found it. cotton, imagine that. I have never seen snow geese, and only a few Canadian geese. i bet that 20 miles of open road made you think you really were lost...
ReplyDeleteIt sure LOOKED like snow. I was thrilled to see those geese.
DeleteLots of cotton indeed, and it does look like snow. We see fields of snow geese here regularly, but it's nice to know they're so widespread. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is just part of it...that piled cotton was everywhere!
DeleteHello, at first I thought I was seeing snow. The cotton fields can fool me. Love the Snow Geese, they are a great sight to see. Enjoy your day and weekend!
ReplyDeleteIndeed! Finally I got to see them with my camera at the ready!
DeleteYou sure get out and about! This series of photos demonstrate the variety of your interests and I sure love the photo of the trees' reflections in the water. I guess you went the "white way" today!
ReplyDeletelol...great play on words!
DeleteWhat an adventure *grin* I haven't seen cotton fields before and they look beautiful, really like snow, wow
ReplyDeletePlenty of cotton here!
DeleteHello Ms. V!!
Your strange day tripping made a good blog post! I love the effect all the cotton is making! We have no snow geese, ours are Canada geese. They rule the entire city!
ReplyDeleteThere were a few trees near by that were covered with raw cotton!
DeleteWow, that cotton does look like snow. I've never seen snow geese but we have tons of Canada geese around here
ReplyDeleteThey're quite unique as far as geese go. lol
DeleteAnni, I wish you had been able to find at least one of the species you were looking for. Glad you were able to get a shot of the snow geese. Those birds are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThey ARE pretty...I like their black 'lips'
DeleteStopped by to see where you've been today. We have some cotton around here too but mostly peanuts.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize Texas had peanut farms!
DeleteWow - that is a lot of snow! Glad you saw some birds and then found your way home. :)
ReplyDeleteSnow...in the form of cotton!
DeleteI had not seen cotton before....great pics as usual.. Days are getting longer and looking forward to getting out and about soon. The one thing I miss so much about Florida. (But I won't miss the hurricanes!)
ReplyDeleteFlorida gets 'hit' a lot!
DeleteLook at all that cotton....on the way to my human sissy and BIL's house (down east) Mom told me they see lots of cotton in the spring.
ReplyDeleteHugs madi and mom
I'm thinking this was piled up like that from hurricane damage. Just guessin'.
