GOOD FENCES and CRITTERS

| Turkey Vulture on a Fence |
This photo of a vulture on a fence post was taken last year during the Whooping Crane Migration to Goose Island, near Lamar, Texas and Copano Bay. To its front side it would be facing a small pasture where there are a few cattle. It seems on ranch land, where there is cattle you'll sure 'nough spot vultures. Why is that, you wonder?

WILLY NILLY 5
1] There are beginning to be signs of Autumn!! For that I'm happy. It's not really the weather per sé. But over the past week my weather app on my smartphone has been advising of drier air and fire dangers with the gusty winds picking up. With a drought, fire hazards are a sure thing. Anyway, Bud and I were at a park in town the other day and some small amounts of migrating birds heading south for the winter are showing up. We saw a Buff-bellied Hummingbird, a Chuck Will's Widow, and a sure sign...a male Yellow Warbler. I'm telling myself..."soon, SOON Anni, cooler days ahead." Oh and not to forget, Autumn clothes and decor are found while out shopping.
2] I finished reading the book "A Woman in Berlin". I posted about it a couple of weeks ago....saying in that post that for me it perceived to be a good read. Well, my critique is just mediocre. Sure, it was good. I'll give it that. But before I finished I thought it became a bit redundant and somewhat boring. I was more than happy to be finished.
Now I started reading a newly published book: The Ghost of the Mary Celeste, that I borrowed from the Library next to the park mentioned in #1. [Yes, this is a ship...a real ship that was mysteriously abandoned at sea by its crew and passengers and salvaged in the 1870s]. I haven't read too much of it as of this post, but I'm getting the gist of a girl who can 'see things' that others can't. An historical novel with a different twist for me. A thriller mystery. When I finish I'll give my review. From Amazon Booksellers comes this:
3] Made up my own recipe for a 'new' smoothie. LOL Thing is I had some kiwi fruit in the 'fridge and they needed to be eaten before they get too soft and thrown away. They're not expensive, but I still don't like to throw food out if possible. Okay. So, I peeled TWO kiwi fruits and sliced them into my blender. Next I added 4 ounces of Vanilla Yogurt...6 ice cubes and a TBSP of lime juice for tartness. Set my blender on ice crusher speed...and the smoothie was delicious. A sweet, tangy, cold and refreshing mid afternoon snack. Bud said when I poured it out into my smoothie mug that it looked like "lungers". Well, la di dah!!
4] I have a free Yah00 email account for my family members to contact me if necessary. Tho I don't like emails much [I'd much prefer texting] ---I opened it a couple of days ago and now they have "SPONSORED" Advertisements - in the INBOX no less? I just went to ad block and added that and found a new add-on through Firefox. "Yah00 Mail Hide Ad Panel". I haven't been back into my account since, so don't know if it really blocks it at all. Sometime soon.
5] First day of school in our city's district is August 25th. There is a plus to this...not as many young whipper-snappers out on the streets racing their autos...at least during the day. And not too many out in the malls. The negative is remembering to slow down through the school zones.....it takes me a while to get used to it 'cause some aren't marked with the flashing school zone lights.

From Amazon Booksellers comes this:- ...young writer named Arthur Conan Doyle hears of the Mary Celeste and decides to write an outlandish short story about what took place. This story [Doyle's] causes quite a sensation back in the United States, particularly between sought-after Philadelphia spiritualist medium Violet Petra and a rational-minded journalist named Phoebe Grant, who is seeking to expose Petra as a fraud. Then there is the family of the Mary Celeste's captain, a family linked to the sea for generations and marked repeatedly by tragedy. Each member of this ensemble cast holds a critical piece to the puzzle of the Mary Celeste.

I have heard of this ship!! I may have to get the book. I love your turkey vulture picture...it looks just HUGE and you really gave me a feeling of that size.
ReplyDelete....I was pretty close to this vulture....but, they ARE big.
DeleteI can see why it's called a turkey vulture. Large critter, isn't it? The Mary Celeste book sounds fascinating, I love a real life mystery. I first heard about this ship at school and it's fascinated me ever since. I'll try and hunt the book down the next time I'm at the library.
ReplyDeleteIt was just published this year a couple of months ago...hope you find it.
DeleteI love the second photo, beautiful play of light. =)
ReplyDelete...glad you liked the sun in that photo Jacqueline
DeleteThe vulture shot is cool! And what a pretty skywatch shot! Wonderful post, Anni!
ReplyDelete...thanks Eileen
DeleteLove the shot of the turkey vulture. I wish I could share your enthusiasm for fall approaching. Not that I have anything against fall but it means that winter is coming in right behind it and I do have something against winter :)
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to be a swinger getting naked in the grocery store when it's cold outside don't you know
You crack me up!!!
DeleteI could add something about cold/and body parts....but not here. roflmao
Nice vulture, if that is not some form of contradiction! Why do they gather where the cattle are???!
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
LOL...contradiction maybe, but so true. I have often wondered about vultures/cattle. It's something I don't understand.
DeleteBig storm front, no rain... exactly the same as is happening here. Since Sunday already...
ReplyDeleteYour weather in S A is the same as ours then. I wish it would rain...for both of us.
DeleteI love your recipe for kiwi smoothie, and I will make it for sure. I like that you added vanilla yogurt instead of plain for some extra flavor!
ReplyDeleteMersad
Mersad Donko Photography
Yes, the vanilla made it just a bit sweet with the tang of the lime juice. It was simple, and delicious.
DeleteNever been a fan of Yahoo mail. Seems as if they inundate you with spam!! And I am loving seeing these early signs of fall :)
ReplyDeleteYes...it's a pain. Defintely.
DeleteYou and me both...ready for Autumn.
Well Anni the vulture on the fence makes for a cool Good Fences photo! Gorgeous sky! I am eager for Fall but not for what follows. It's great having the kids back in school.. we can go anywhere during the week without the crowds!
ReplyDelete...no more crowds! Yes indeed.
DeleteThanks for the compliments.
Love the turkey vulture shot! I'll look forward to your review of The Ghost book.
ReplyDelete...thanks Betty.
DeleteGreat pic of the Turkey Vulture Anni. I wonder if they hang around cattle because the cattle droppings contain stuff the vultures like? The Egyptian Vulture does this.
ReplyDelete...I never thought of that Phil...thanks for enlightening me.
DeleteYour vulture looks menacing. I never heard of a "lunger" before, but that smoothie does sound delicious. :-)
ReplyDeleteWell it could mean someone suffering from TB...but in slang it's a thick wad of greenish spittle found usually on the street or along sidewalks...or maybe in a trashy alleyway---from some nasty throat, dredged up from the person's lungs!!
DeleteHe looks very majestic....King of the prairie! This is a book I will look for too. I think it would be one I would enjoy! Hugs!
ReplyDelete....hope you enjoy the book if you find it....I'm likin' it so far.
DeleteThat's a wonderful capture of the vulture! The sky shot is pretty and I'm sorry you didn't get the rain. We've had a pretty nice summer and I hate to see it end. I do love fall, but don't like winter weather.
ReplyDeleteWinters here are short....which I LIKE very much. The summers are brutal.
DeleteGlad you liked the two images shared today Cheryl
Those are both great pictures! I hate it when a book starts out promising and then ends up like that. The new book sounds really good!
ReplyDeleteSo far, Mari, the book is quite good. I keep wanting to turn the next page....lol
DeleteJust stopping in this morning to see what is going on down the coast way. We're having that old dry wind and triple temps. Ready for some fall.
ReplyDeleteI know that hot dry wind isn't nice!!!
DeleteGood grief, that turkey vulture is huge - and what a wingspan!
ReplyDeleteit was...they ARE. You know what they say 'bout Texas? Everything's bigger in Texas. lol
Deletei like the vulture shot. :) i'm ready for cooler temps and rain, too!
ReplyDeleteI think we all are in 90% of Texas. Altho, my son in Houston, tells me it's been raining and cool for the past week....mostly.
DeleteI love how you cover so many parties with one post. Very good job.
ReplyDeleteThe vulture photo is awesome....
...thanks bj.
DeleteI do it that way so I can actually be away from the computer during the days. Unlike what it used to be where I'd be sitting most all day long.
That's quite the vulture photo! School starts here the day after Labour Day but I'm pretty sure there will still be plenty of adults speeding on the highways. I don't think many people understand the word "limit" in Speed Limit. :)
ReplyDeleteI know....it never fails.
Deletethat turkey vulture is just beautiful, love those spread wings. i live in email and don't have a smart phone or text...i have a back up email address in case my cable one is down, on Yahoo so thank for the tip.... those ads make me crazy.. and the ads on blogs and on our news paper and on every single site i go to make me crazy. wish i could block them all.
ReplyDelete...if you use Firefox for your default browser, get the Ad-on ADBLOCK Plus
DeleteLove that Turkey Vulture shot!
ReplyDelete...thanks Pat
DeleteAnni
ReplyDeleteI've only seen turkey vultures with wings shut. Under wings are very pretty.
Now I want a smoothie. LOL
Gracie the Highlander.
My B got a tad frustrated w her intelligence early on..I reminded him she might be smart but she could not drive herself so we are still superior.
We really like her though. Very comfortable and good on trips.
Hugs C
Humans rule!!!!
DeleteThe turkey vulture is so beautiful - I actually like these birds, and seeing them on a fence with their wings spread is something very special. Beautiful photo.
ReplyDelete...glad you enjoyed your visit today Carola
DeleteNice photo of turkey vultures, they work as clean up crews! I love whooping cranes and wrote some articles about them years ago, and interviewed the ultralight aircraft pilots who led the cranes on their Wisconsin Florida route. You must be near the other migration path. Kids are going back to school early here, it seems odd. The school near us started Aug. 4!
ReplyDelete...now THAT is an early start for school. Yep, they are the 'clean up crew' to be sure.
DeleteFantastic shot of the vulture Anni. Love that glow in the sky!
ReplyDelete...thanks Karen
DeleteI love vultures. This is a great shot!
ReplyDelete...thanks Ann, I'm happy to know you enjoyed the photo of the vulture.
DeleteReally great post and wonderful photos !
ReplyDelete...thanks Ela
DeleteOoh, cool shot of the vulture! Awesome!!! I love fall, so I'm very excited that we're almost there.
ReplyDeleteWell, I wouldn't mind summer if it were more tolerable on the thermometer.
DeleteLike you, I'm looking forward to more temperate weather. By the time I get back to Illinois and Wisconsin I'm afraid it may be more like winter up there.
ReplyDeleteI tend to look forward to Fall no matter where I am.
DeleteIs it a turkey? Brown? I've never seen one like this!
ReplyDeleteMy dad was three blacks, but there was a problem: they fight with our chickens and dogs. So, we gave them to a friend who just have turkeys :D
No...they are turkey VULTURES
DeleteReal life mystery- sounds like a good read! But still need a good storyteller to tell it. Your treat sounds delish and so cool on this hot, hot day. My crepe myrtle is dropping leaves and the sure tell sign I always look for- the shadows are shifting. I'm hearing we are in for a wicked winter...so I'm not sure I want time to speed up too fast. Have a great weekend Anni!
ReplyDelete...thank goodness, down my way, there aren't 'wicked' winters!!! Our crepe myrtle have been dropping leaves, but not from cold...from extreme heat.
DeleteYour new book sound intriguing, so I'll look forward to your critique! I'm reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks right now. True story (not usually my thing) but very interesting. http://rebeccaskloot.com/the-immortal-life/
ReplyDelete....I see books...and then find the index...and I say to myself..."Index? Boring"!!! I'd much rather read historic fiction.
DeleteA beautiful SWF post! Well done!
ReplyDeletethanks Hans
DeleteThat is a great shot of the vulture.
ReplyDelete...thanks Michelle
DeleteBeautiful, breathtaking skies and a handsome vulture!! Thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend, Anni!!
ReplyDelete...thanks Sylvia, and have a great weekend yourself.
DeleteThat's a powerful shot.
ReplyDelete...thanks Jim
DeleteThank-you, thank-you, thank-you!!!! I did not know such an add-on existed...I added it and it seems to be working on the yahoo mail...I get so tired of that!
ReplyDelete...I'm glad I could help. :-)
Deletelove the pictures very beautiful, love the smoothie idea, I love creating my own
ReplyDeleteI have managed to take strawberries, bluberries, bananas, mango, and kiwi and put them all together it is yummylicious
...sounds like a great smoothie!!
DeleteGreat shot of the vulture.
ReplyDeleteSorry about your yahoo email. I'm tired of being marketed to constantly.
...you and me both Yogi.
DeleteSoon the cooler temps will be here. When it rains here which has been consistent for the past week, it's cool. But without the storms? Humid and nasty. Wonderful birds! A Buff-bellied Hummer? Awesome! We're back in school now and life is once again a routine:)
ReplyDelete....yep, memories of Tucson's life in the summer monsoon season.
Deletethe skywatch image is very spiritual. i love it.
ReplyDelete...thanks, glad you liked it.
DeleteYou can surely have some of our rain. I need to mow and I need a dry spell. Your opening photo is just amazing, what a wing span on him!
ReplyDeleteI'd take ALL your rain right now.
DeleteTwo beautiful shots!
ReplyDelete...thanks Fiona
DeleteA wonderful SkyWatch photo Annie and I'd like to try your smoothy. I never waste any food, either I eat it or the dog gets it (he loves fruit and veg) and/or the chickens finish it off and I get eggs as a bonus.
ReplyDeleteI don't have dogs....or chickens. What I throw out goes to the birds at the landfill.
DeleteHmm...vultures and cattle? I wonder what the connection might be.
ReplyDeleteLovely skywatch pic.
....it's a puzzler.
DeleteThanks for your visit.
wonderful photos!! that book that you are reading sounds like something i'd love! i've never thought of kiwi's in a smoothie, i'll have to try it! school started here last week already, blah! have a great weekend and thanks for joining willy nilly friday 5!!
ReplyDeletethanks for hosting Tanya
Deletewe have two kinds here in Texas, the turkey and the black. Both are wicked looking but still gotta love 'em.
ReplyDeleteThanks Felicia
I do love the turkey vulture, and a lovely sky!
ReplyDelete(ツ) from Cottage Country Ontario , ON, Canada!
...thanks Jennifer.
DeleteGorgeous shot of the vulture! The books sounds intriguing...I'll wait for your opinion, though. :) I thought Gmail was good with spam, but I'm starting to get inundated. They don't bombard me with ads in my inbox, though.
ReplyDelete....they're all becoming a bit too invasive with ads if you want to continue using the 'free'.
DeleteLove your Willy Nilly...I am going to get a copy of that book about the Mary Celeste. Glad you re-evaluated the other book. I just finished Beautiful about Hedy Lamar. That was THE MOST COMPLICATED woman I have ever read about. I ended up with a love/hate relationship with her (or maybe I should say like/dislike) Anyway, the book was excellent, but I feel rattled. :-) Anyway, I wanted to tell you that Latane on Living Life on Main Street is my Mom. Saw your comment on her Willy Nilly post.
ReplyDeleteI have a paid Reagan.com account--no ads EVER. I don't mind paying for the privacy for my closest friends and family. Of course, I also have the two gmail accounts because of blogger and other things. :-) I do like gmail. Oh, and that kiwi smoothie sounds great!
I love biographies and haven't sit down to read one in ages!!! This one, Beautiful, sounds like an excellent read.
DeleteThat kiwi smoothie IS pretty darned good.
Oh, I meant to tell you, I LOVE that photo of the sky with the cross. Really cool!
ReplyDelete...thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
DeleteI love the photo of the sky and the vulture shot is awesome. You take fantastic photos and I always enjoy visiting your blog.
ReplyDelete,,,thanks over and over Brenda. You're always such a positive visitor!!
DeleteI have never seen a Turkey Vulture up close and personal before,,,amazing. Tom The Backroads Traveller
ReplyDelete...happy to know you enjoyed its image Tom
DeleteWhat a wonderful shot of that ugly bird on the fence...lol! Aren't vultures so very....uh....ummm...distinctive....yes, THAT'S the word I was looking for! Seriously, great photo!
ReplyDelete...never thought of them as 'distinctive' before....UGLY is more like it.
DeleteAwesome Turkey Vulture photo and I will soon be sharing 2 baby Turkey Vultures, well, they are now juveniles ;) Your Kiwi fruit smoothie sounds delicious...we enjoy so many kinds of veggie and fruit smoothies around here ;)
ReplyDelete...thanks Mary
