With all the wonderful rainfall we've been getting, the dragonfly population has exploded!! Early in the morning, our front yard is quite literally a massive invasion of them, and they're consuming all those nasty Texas-sized mosquitoes!! But, I must admit, if I see one from the corner of my eye, those dragonflies seem the size of hummingbirds; they're so huge...
...oh, and by the way, quite a while ago, I mentioned to Ginny that in our yard we have two hybrid hibiscus bushes [they're going bananas this year!] that have much smaller blossoms AND they have variegated leaves...from white and green dappled pigments to light pink, green, white and rose colored leaves. Ginny asked me to share them in photos. I finally remembered to get some pictures to give a show n tell ---
[linking up to TODAY'S FLOWERS]
SCIENCE TIDBIT: Did you know there are only TWO days in a year that the sun rises DUE EAST?!!! That is the on Sunday this year...the Autumnal Equinox and then next year on The First Day of Spring!!! - the Vernal Equinox
- from EARTH-Sky this is quoted: "No matter where you are on Earth, you have a due east and due west point on your horizon. That point marks the intersection of your horizon with the celestial equator – the imaginary line above the true equator of the Earth. At the equinoxes, the sun appears overhead at noon as seen from Earth’s equator. That’s the definition of an equinox: it’s when the sun crosses the celestial equator, as seen in Earth’s sky. That’s why the sun rises due east and sets due west for all of us on the day of an equinox. The sun is on the celestial equator, and the celestial equator intersects all of our horizons at points due east and due west. This fact makes the day of an equinox a good day for finding due east and due west from your yard or other favorite site for watching the sky..."
...and speaking of Texas:
Due to the large number of jobs moving from California to Texas, the Lone Star State has compiled a "Californian to Texan" translation guide...

Hi Anni...
ReplyDeletenice macro photos !! Amazing :)
Greetings and enjoy your weekend
I love your dragonflies- haven't seen any here yet, but I did hear an army of frogs croaking last night, so maybe they'll eat up some mosquitoes, too.
ReplyDeleteLove your hibiscus- they are just about perfect for this climate.
And the Texas California list? STILL laughiing!
Ya...anything or anyONE who consumes mosquitoes is always on my GOOD list. :o)
DeleteAnd I also want to add there's a comment for you by one of my friends on my last post~
ReplyDelete...thanks, I visited with Jennifer today.
DeleteThank you Anni! I love your Texas/California list. We would be considered truants in California. Thank you for helping us to get through all of that artfully crafted lingo that keeps the politics empty of common sense!
Delete...thanks Jennifer, for stopping by today.
DeleteLove your dragonfly photos....:)
ReplyDeleteOne thing I got upset with our handsome Gov. Perry was when he started urging folks from Calif. to come out West !!!
....oh bj, you and I agree 'bout the Gov....he IS nice to look at isn't he?
DeleteYou got some amazing dragonfly pictures! Your hibiscus is so pretty. I wish they grew well here.
ReplyDeleteI say again - I love Texas! That list was the best.
I ♥ Texas too!!! Y'know, hibiscus survived Colorado winters...they 'died off' but came back in the summer. Maybe you should try one once.
DeleteI had no idea that the sun rises due east and sets due west on the equinox! Thank you for this very interesting little tidbit. I wonder if that's why the rumor started that you can balance an egg on that day. And I love hibiscus! Thanks for the pictures. :-)
ReplyDelete...now I did not know that about the egg balance thingie!! We both learned something today. ;o)
Deletei like our dragons here, too. :)
ReplyDelete...there's so many 'bout now, it's like a military force. LOL
DeleteThat's a herd of dragonflies! I LOVE your CA to TX chart! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDelete...enjoy your weekend too Terri
DeleteGreat macro shots of beautiful dragonflies ~ great post too!
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to know you enjoyed the post today!
DeleteTerrific dragonfly captures!
ReplyDelete...thanks Karen.
DeleteWonderful shots of the dragonflies and flowers.
ReplyDelete...thanks Carver!!
DeleteLovely shots of the dragonflies and your hibiscus flowers. I like the translation guide.
ReplyDelete...thanks Pat!
DeleteGreat post Anni, love the translation guide and the photos of the flowers, also the science info. Have a great weekend. We're off to pick up our English friends in about an hour.
ReplyDeleteHow fun!!! Enjoy the visitors!! I know you will.
DeleteOur hibiscus is going crazy this year, too! I've so enjoyed their bright red blossoms. Too funny on the Calif to Texas translations. Big lols!!
ReplyDeleteYou wonder why the season is so good for hibiscus then?
DeleteHi Anni of course we love your photos but the CA to TX translation is hilarious!!
ReplyDeleteHugs madi and mom
...it's a hoot, isn't it?
DeleteThose do look like some pretty big dragon flies and the hibiscus are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteLoved the translations too
...they ARE very large here in Texas.
DeleteYour flowers are so beautiful. And very funny how they changed California words to Texan! lol. sandie
ReplyDelete...nah, I think it's the other way around, Texas was here firs. LOL
DeleteI love dragonflies. We have them in our yard, my daughter is scared of them - lol
ReplyDeleteNice pictures :)
I can understand her fear.
DeleteGuess if I wanted to get up at sunrise tomorrow, I could use the sun as a fine compass. However, I don't think that's going to happen. What is a yard flower for you would be a hothouse indoor plant for me!
ReplyDeleteWe used to have them in the ground in Colorado...very few, and right up on the foundation of the house. They'd die off, but come back in the late Spring.
DeleteI sure would like to take such nice pictures of dragonflies as yours! Love 'em. Also feel like I would never fit in CA but TX sounds just right.
ReplyDeleteLOL...Texas it is then.
DeleteThank you so much for posting your flowers, they are just beautiful!!! The equinox thing has always confused me a bit, Phil was just telling me that on both equinoxes, day and night are equal all over the world, THAT is hard to believe!!
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome. And the sunrise/sunset stuff is confusing to Bud also.
DeleteDear Annie,
ReplyDeleteyou're beautiful photos again.
I do break something not every day in my blog, because I have back pain and can not sit.
Much love for you by Matilda ♥
...sorry to hear of your back pain. That can't be ANY fun.
DeleteWonderful dragonfly shots! Love those little dragons when I can get them to sit still. :)
ReplyDeleteLOVED your California to Texas translation!
...they DO flit around a lot don't they?
DeleteThe dragon fly captures are superb. Especially the one against the blue sky!
ReplyDeleteYour hibiscus shot too is terrific!
...thanks Indrani
DeleteYou always make me giggle!
ReplyDeleteI like the dragonflies.
Cheers from Cottage Country Ontario , ON, Canada!
giggling is good!! ;o)
DeleteP.S. Forgot to say how much I enjoyed your dragonfly shots, they are superb!
ReplyDelete...glad you liked the dragons Ginny.
DeleteI live in California and would fit in very well in Texas, I agree with the Texas definitions. Love dragon flies.
ReplyDeleteWith the TX version, it makes more sense. LOL
DeleteI was born and raised in California and agree with some and not others, cute though. We finally got rain yesterday, we had been a month with none and after the wet summer a month was much too long! Great pictures. Hope you had a grand weekend and Happy Autumn!
ReplyDeletewell, it was supposed to be funny. At least I thought it was. LOL Happy Autumn to you too.
DeleteAwesome dragonfly captures, Anni! Have a happy Sunday!
ReplyDeleteThanks Eileen...loved your island photo share this weekend.
DeleteSend me some of your Dragonflies ... we have lots of mosquitoes for them. Actually, we have had quite a few come in and have a feast in the back yard and I am always so happy to see them. Love your pictures ... they are so hard to picture.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,

Bud and I went birding this morning, and there were TONS of dragonflies everywhere we looked....but the mosquitoes were 10 times aplenty!!
