This series of photos is what it looked like around Whitecap Beach on our Padre Island [about twenty miles from us] the morning BEFORE Hurricane Ike hit landfall about 200 miles north of us near Galveston and Houston. I'm thinking that Ike is the SIZE of Texas to be sure. On any given 'normal' day there are miles and miles of beach --probably about 1/2 city block wide from seawall to the gentle ripple of the waves of the Gulf. Not Friday morning! I'm posting this while we still have power and the computer is operable, so my guesstimation is this activity is probably about 12 to 18 hours BEFORE the hurricane hits the Galveston/Houston area.
As I tried to catch up on those who have visited me within the last couple of days, I've just not been online much, preparing for the worst, and Bud and I brought in everything from the yard ,stored them all in the garage...many many indoor preparations also in case of flooding and such. Now, the hurricane warning has been lifted from our area, and we are under Tropical Storm Watch. Still we could get winds at 60-70 miles an hour and heavy rains. But not of hurricane strength. Keep all who live in the Galveston Houston area in your thoughts as this rages through.
The 1st photo was media coverage...when we got to the shoreline they were taping the sea as it churned and whipped abnormally high surf. The remaining photos are taken as Bud and I walked the sea wall. At one time, as I was leaning close to get a shot looking down, I got drenched! The seas churning wild...
So wild and untamed is nature....

Also, Bud being a Navy guy from long ago, and on ship on seas rougher than what we witnessed taught me a couple of words. Wild concept! LOL No not those two words, but while we were walking and I was dazzled by the rough seas...looking out to the horizon I saw tall, TALL waves shoot up into the sky, and hammer back down. But I kept saying "ooooo, look at that, awesome...you wonder if there is a word for that?" Well, he told me. The high waves jutting up with spray is "SPUME"...and the fine mist that shoots across your face from the wave is "spoondrift". Hmmmmm. I was impressed. And of course, me being me the competitor, I had to look it up when I got home on the 'net....
spume
- foam or froth on the sea
Spoondrift
- spray blown up from the surface of the sea
Spray blown from the tops waves during a gale at sea; also, snow driven in the wind at sea
When I see these pictures, I realize that we humans are just nothing against the force of nature !
ReplyDeleteReading all your preparations you have to do to avoid the worst sounds so strange to me. Suddenly I live it through you and it is completely different as if I just see it on TV.
I try to imagine such a situation but I never have lived this. My parents did but for other forces, they had to do the same during the war when there was a bomb alert.
Pretty shots of that wild nature. Spume and spoondrift, beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteThinking of you and hoping for the best, Anni.
hiya! thank you for the update. i really appreciate it. a year or two ago a storm in america would have had me worried for all of a minute while watching the story on tv. now i 'know' people over there and i'm a helluva more concerned. so keep me posted if you can?!?!?! and stay safe!!!!!!
ReplyDeletePlease stay safe sweetie, wrapping you in prayers, love, and hugs.

ReplyDeleteVery kind of Ike to provide a theme topic but I guess it's the only kind thing he'll do.
ReplyDeleteStay safe.
Wonderful pictures, but the reason's less good. My thoughts are with you and all involved. Stay safe!

Just look at those waves! We call it spindrift :)
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Have been thinking about you. And you cannot get much wilder weather than that! The photos certainly are scary!
ReplyDeletei love the waves
ReplyDeleteAnni,
ReplyDeleteYour shots of the Gulf are awesome indeed. There is only once that I have seen the ocean in all its fury and that was at Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. I stood on the rocks and watched the 7 foot waves crash to shore on the rocks. It was an breathtaking to be sure.
I'm so glad you and Bud are safe and that Ike has been downgraded to a tropical storm in your area. However, I am keeping those in its path in my prayers. I hope your son doesn't have too much damage. I must now go and check to find the latest news on Ike.
Be safe, my friend.
Blessings,
Mary
I hope you are safe and sound right now. Great pictures.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by. I hope you recognized the new look --- I was tired of the other. Here at Bay City we have had very little effect from Ike. We have been on the very west edge. Last night the wind gust peaked at about 50 mph and we have had rain. Just looking around a little this morning right here at my house we don't have any damage from wind or flooding. Hubby has already pulled some of the boards from windows so we can see out. You have some awesome pictures. I wanted to get some, but it was too dark and wet by the time we had anything. :) Thanks for your words.
ReplyDeleteBetter to be prepared. All the best as you wait out the storm.
ReplyDeleteI have joined in the photohunters too.
ReplyDeleteYou pictures are a little to wild for me~ I hope y'all stay safe!
Hi Anni, thanks for sharing the "wild" waves from Ike..I can't get anything done being glued to the TV and watching CNN....Have you heard from your son?? wishing all of you God's blessings... hugs, Baba
ReplyDeleteThat is pretty wild. It is amazing what there are words for! Hope all is well there. I have family in Corpus and Houston and Louisiana so I have been praying about Ike!
ReplyDeleteTWO new words for today!! smile!! I am so glad that you two are okay today!! Thanks for your help!! You know you did not have to do that but me...I am THANKFUL!! Take care...
ReplyDeleteThose wild waves struck some of my wild thoughts in me :)
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping you are ok. The main part of Ike missed us here in SW Florida even though we had some flooding from rain. This is one BIG storm. Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteHope you stay safe through this HUGE storm... it's almost as big as the Gulf of Mexico!
ReplyDeleteWow, great choice for The Hunt Anni. The wildness of Hurricane Ike has been heavy on everyone's mind this week. Hoping you're OK. Thanks for stopping by for a visit. Always makes my Saturdays.
ReplyDeleteBTW - the Bud, he's a smart guy!
Stay safe Anni. You have been in my thoughts. Great shots for the wild theme.
ReplyDeleteI came here this morning to see if you had posted. I'm glad the brunt of the storm missed you. As I've been watching the news on TV I've thought of you and others that I know that live in that area. Great pictures on this post and how wonderful it must have been to take that walk. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI have read the news regarding Uncle Ike. He's surely wild. I hope everything would be safe for you over there right now.

Wild and scary indeed! Glad you are safe!
ReplyDeleteHurricanes are certainly on the wild side. I've been through a couple myself. Hope your damage is not too great.
ReplyDeleteBaker
(Thanks for the visit and the kind comments)
Oh I hate hurricanes but rough seas are wonderful to watch!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you are OK.
I'm relieved to know Ike's passed you by and that you're okay. Thanks for sharing the photos with the 'mouse over captions' and I know you're still busy catching up, but I'd love to learn how to add these kind of captions to MY photos. Is it difficult and could you refer me to a reference so I might learn to do this thing when time permits? Did I say I'm relieved to know you're okay??? Stay safe ...
ReplyDeleteHugs and blessings,
I was wondering how Padre Island was doing in the storm. I'm glad to hear that you are safe and okay. And there is nothing wilder than a nice big ol' hurricane. Thanks for stopping by.
ReplyDeleteI wondered if anyone would be brave enough to get Ike pics... Y'all did the right thing, getting prepared like you did. Having been through more than a few hurricanes and TS's, myself, you get the drill pretty quickly - prepare for the worst & hope for the best. Hope you still have power to read all these well-wishes!
ReplyDeletePretty wild times indeed!
I've been watching CNN the last couple of hours, following their news about Ike and the damage it's left behind so far...Houston looks to have been hit hard. I'm just so happy that you're safe and didn't get affected...all that work to prepare for the worse but as they say, better to be safe than sorry!! That's quite some pictures you share with us today...just by looking at the pictures, one can feel the power in those thrashing waves. My prayers continue! xoxo
ReplyDeleteSome wild weather down your way Anni, but glad to see you will miss the hurricane this time. Unfortunately it is early in the season. Have a good weekend anyway.
ReplyDeleteI'm quite familiar with hurricane preparations, and grateful that you were spared a direct hit from this very powerful storm, Anni.
ReplyDeleteOOHh I was so glad to see you have updated and hope it will be okay!! it looks so terrifying on the news!! i can't imagine!! And so much thanks for stopping in evan in your time of where I'd be a total mess!! How sweet of you!!
ReplyDeleteStay safe!!
natural disasters are certainly wild but one hopes that the losses are not wild. Take care, my photohunt friend, take care.
ReplyDeleteAnni...I saw at Mimi's garden you asked Kathy if we had ever met. Kathy and I have been friends for almost 28 years! We talk on the phone almost every day! Rose at A Hint of Home is also a dear friend of 36 years! I got them both started with this "blogging thing". Now, we all three are hooked!!
ReplyDeleteHoping and praying y'all are okay, Anni. We're getting some gusty winds, a little rain and occasional tornado warnings so far. We're supposed to get lots more weather overnight into Sunday.
ReplyDeleteLove and hugs,
Diane
