There is not much to say in this blog today...other than the heavy down pouring rains, flooding the city, county and even our yard, has finally stopped and moved out of our area! I'm grateful for that. Even tho, we were in a severe drought. Now that the rains have gone, we are now experiencing high humidity. And with no overcast sky -hot white, blistering sunlight-, the heat index has soared! I don't walk my usual 10K steps to be sure. As I type this up, our heat index is predicted 108-112° F! You just can't beat mother nature. On Saturday, leaving before sunrise to beat the heat, I only walked about half an hour before I had to turn around, retreat to the air conditioned car. It's officially, by temps anyway, the beginning of a Texas Summer. That's okay, I had a day's worth of laundry to do. I walked the boardwalk at Hans Suter Park...
Now, this is more directed toward my generation [you youngsters can skip this part if you choose]. My title today: The Long Hot Summer. Each year, I say it. And it reminds me of the dreadful...well, Do any of you remember the movie with Paul Newman and his soon to be 2nd wife, Joanne Woodward, and Orson Welles? OMG, how the critics ranted and raved about the movie! I watched it back in the early 60s, and several times over in later years [thinking it'd get better] and it is STILL one of the worst, driest, movies of all time -IMHO. But, that Paul Newman...sigh!!! I do have to admit the two Joanne and Paul definitely had some chemistry. Maybe the movie hit my sore spot because of the poor direction and writers? Ya, maybe.I personally thought Mr. Newman was a B rated actor, except for two. The Color of Money [he won an Oscar for that portrayal], and my ALL TIME favorite movie of the Western genre, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid!!
- Butch Cassidy: ... all they got in Mexico is sweat and there's too much of that here.
Sundance Kid: [chuckling] You just keep thinkin', Butch. That's what you're good at.
Butch Cassidy: Boy, I got vision, and the rest of the world wears bifocals.
We live just minutes away from Old Mexico...I don't go there...Texas, all they got is sweat. Don't need to travel any further.

This is almost like a Court Jester Troll! I saw The Long Hot summer many, many years ago. Your dragonfly photo is wonderful!! So are the vivid blue flowers.

Maybe not quite as humid, but I've been in PA I'm the summer & remember being uncomfortable.

DeleteI saw the movies all of them and the only one I sorta of liked was Butch Cassidy. i find that any movie that wins awards are the ones i did not like. i must say i have never watched any of these a second time. once was enough. we are also in the begeinning of hot human summer and yesterday it was still 92 degrees at 5 pm, i didnot look up the feels like, i came back inside. I noticed when we walked this morning at daybreak Beau and I were walking slower than we usually do and I did not go out for my second walk.

DeleteI liked Newman in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof with Liz Taylor, too. He was an okay actor-but oh- those eyes. The first time I saw JoAnne Woodward was in Sybil and I thought she was an excellent actress. Happy Tuesday- Hugs- Diana

DeleteI rarely watched movies and still am not interested in them, but did see Charlton Heston and he was my favorite. Humidity sneaking in here too. Love the AC. Hope you stay cool and comfortable.

ReplyDeleteI remember seeing that movie but not much about it. Pretty sure I went for a Paul Newman fix. I mostly saw his movies for the eye candy. He was a looker with amazing eyes.

ReplyDeleteI have wanted to ask my Dear Readers, in very HOT places, how they stand it? See, I am born and bred a "Northener". Plus, my ancestors came from Northern European places. So maybe, aversion to being _hot_ is inbred. But I surely am adverse to it.
Of course, this has gotten more pronounced, as I have grown older. -sigh- But even years ago, heat/humidity would eventually get to me.
Sooooo, if people were born/bred in the hot South, are they better able to deal with it?
A/C... Yes, I know A/C. But how can you live your life, cooped up in A/C?
We like windows uncovered. In the heat of Summer, it is necessary to cover them, on the South side. And it feels like living in a cave!!!!!!

ReplyDeleteBut was a Robert Redford fan. _Was_ is the operative word!!! I saw "Butch Cassidy and The Sun Dance Kid," in our long ago theater on Broadway, a zillion times!!!! Really! Just kept going to it, over and over and over, during its run! LOL I was crazy, at that time.
Anyway, my fav. lines were; "Who _are_ those guys?"
At night...They are lying on the top of a mountain/rise....Watching the line of Pinkerton men, carrying lanterns, continuing to hunt them, AT NIGHT!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh S**T!!! R.R. was gorgeous, in that film!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -grin-

We went from 99F two days ago to 74F today..It feels like 50 F to me. I had to put a blanket on last night..I'm a wimp. Still no rain for us..droughts are awful.
Just have to say that I always thought Paul Newman's eyes were something else..piercing

ReplyDeleteWe are hot here in NORTHERN Wisconsin... I wrote NORTHERN in caps because get this we hit 100 degrees June 4 and 5!!! We are in the 90's all week.

I try to tell those who haven't experienced it that it's like getting hit with a giant warm wet sponge the minute you walk outside, and the sponge is them HELD ONTO YOUR SWEATING GASPING FACE by Mother Nature! Your Heat Index is just terrible! But good on ya for walking a bit! I remember that movie. Yes, named "Long Hot Summer" but it did not sizzle!

DeletePaul Newman had the most gorgeous blue eyes! I don't think I've seen Long Hot Summer and probably won't bother trying since you said it's so bad! I visited a friend in Texas a long time ago in July and yes, the humidity is a whole new level! Now she lives in South Florida, which is actually worse!
