I finally got out before sunrise on Thursday! It felt so good to get out in the predawn hour, I was invigorated to get my 10000 steps in before 9 a.m.! The way it should be for me. I had plans of going to the Whitecap Beach area and walk along the seawall, along the shore beyond and back to the South Jetty. Even tho, I thought I walked over my 10K, it was short by about 300 steps, so I rested a bit, got in the car, and went grocery shopping. In fact, there is a new store that opened last month on the island, and I was curious to check it out. Needless to say, once in the store, I did NOT buy a single item. First off, the small island grocer has no deli, no in-store bakery. What kind of store has no bakery or deli? Then, just walking around building up my step count, curious, I took record of prices. Whoa...I had to show Bud when I got home. Wowzers. Everything on the island is double or more in price than Walmart or our HEB plus stores in the city. In fact, for those that LIVE on the island, it makes more CENTS to drive the 5-6 miles over the causeway and save a cool hundred dollars for a month's worth of items. I took cellphone photos to prove it, and compare 'cause I knew Bud wouldn't believe the prices.
I digress. High tide was now receding, still early morning bubbles on the surface of the sand, I spent a great deal dodging jelly fish. The gulls were busy in search for their morning meal. There were two kite boarders [kinda like parasailing with the wind and a kite for propulsion, yet not gliding above with being attached to the kite, but using a surfboard to travel the waves], people walking their dogs, and we all were enjoying the beginning of our day! Also, a small group on the beach were practicing Tai Chi! This always looks, to me, to be so very beneficial. Here are some photos of the beach at Whitecap:

Once I got home, I took out chicken thighs to thaw so I can make one of our favorite dinners...Chicken Teriyaki on a bed of fried rice with Japanese steamed veggies as a side.

Your jellyfish shots are pretty, but I always fnd them so creepy. They have no brain and look so protoplasmic...Gosh, at those prices, they should at least have a deli and bakery!!
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy shopping at bakery & deli at stores...saves me cooking all the time.
DeletePrices are skyrocketing everywhere, Anni! Unbelievable!
ReplyDeleteThe blue jellyfish is beautiful ... but so jelly! LOL
I hope the Chicken Teriyaki tasted! We love it too!
Bud really likes it. Even when I use low sodium soy sauce...to me, it's too salty.
DeleteIt's crazy how prices differ from store to store and city to city. Sometimes it's a matter of big chain buying power against small mom and pop type stores getting charged more.
ReplyDeleteI like the pictures of the jellyfish. That dinner sounds delicious.
Dinner was good.
DeleteHello, Anni
ReplyDeleteI see prices going up everywhere. The jellyfish are pretty to see, love the gulls and views of the gulf.
Take care, enjoy your day!
I don't see the big price surge yet in town, but expect it. This island store, tho, is VERY overpriced for Texas standards.
DeleteI'm so glad you've found your groove again, Anni. Your words even sound "uplifted" in this post. Hurray for you, honey. Stay safe, ok? ~Andrea xoxo
ReplyDeleteIt felt good to have my morning routine again. Thanks Andrea
DeleteThe jellyfish photos are great and very interesting and dinner sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteDinner was good (but too salty for my taste). lol
Deletei thought the jelly fish was a shell until i saw all the comments. love the color and have never seen one like it... a fun place to do excercise and get your steps in... we are still cold, walked the last 3 days at 45 degrees, did not love it but did it. I saw your comment about me not showing in feedly, that happened to me a couple of times, someone quit showing in feeds. i have two people, one in canada and one in sweden and their comments do not come in my email, everyone else does. been like that for a year. Our Publix grocery is 6/10 of a mile from us, but the prices keep me out of there except for emergecny run out of something. every item is 50 cents to 2.50 more per item than WM
ReplyDeleteI think I'd go "without" the exceptional need for something. I just don't like knowing I waste money. In any case.
DeleteSo glad you are back in the groove Anni, that's how I'm feeling about getting things done at home. I can't believe I let things slide for so long that I'm having to do this kind of cleaning to begin with. I love your photos. I've always found jellyfish so interesting. Your dinner sounds delish!
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to slack off, but difficult to get back to routine.
DeleteThose Manowar jellyfish sure were plentiful. I remember those days when they would be all along the edge of the beach. Nasty buggers if they get you in the water. Know what you mean about Tai Chi. I keep thinking--someday.
ReplyDeleteThe jellyfish were nearly every step taken!
DeleteGlad you're back on track and walking again! As for grocery prices, I would rather shop at our little local market for a few small items on a regular basis than go across the street to the big Price Chopper. The prices are not much different but the atmosphere is. A trip to Walmart (29 miles away)every two weeks is well worth the trip when the prices are sooooo much better.
ReplyDeleteAtmosphere & good, courteous staff makes a big difference, I agree.
DeleteSmall, independent grocers' prices are almost always sky-high. I don't know how they survive.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I'm fascinated by tai chi and would like to try it; however, there's nothing like that available near me. So walking it is, when the weather allows. Not anytime soon, though. We are well below freezing with high winds, and headed into a lasting deep freeze.
Well, this store that recently opened is a CHAIN franchise. I don't get it. And the Tai Chi is obviously here locally, but the last I looked it up they had stopped classes 'cause of covid. I'd like to try it, but I like my own schedule more.
DeleteFirst of all...a stunningly beautiful header Anni.
ReplyDeleteDodging jellyfish sounds like fun.
Seeing your wonderful photos makes my day...thank you ☕🌷
There were jellyfish every yard or so. Nasty boogers!
DeleteGreat photos.I love those water views.
ReplyDeleteCome down my way (late winter is a good time)
DeleteI remeber when we lived in OK. We would drive 35 miles every 2 wks to grocery shop as it was so expensive in our small town. I guess some things never change. Sounds like you had a wonderful walk! Have a grand weekend!
ReplyDeleteI can't fathom paying twice as much. I would do without
DeleteOkay, now I'm hungry for chicken teriyaki too. Sounds perfect for your dinner.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you are recharged. I am in desperate need of that myself.
This has been a hard week for hubby and I.
Really trying to take the high road and saying this too shall pass.
ok, enough moaning and groaning...Have a great rest of your day.
Sue
We all have big challenges...keeps life interesting. Just hope some good comes from the high road you take!
DeleteWhat a treasure of a day! Well, except for the island store. Same here, at the beach. Go inland over the bridge to shop. But at least you explored. Still, a treasure of a day.
ReplyDeleteIt was a perfect morning.
DeleteBeautiful collection of photos taken here! I enjoy getting out in the pre-dawn hours myself. There's something golden about the stillness and silence experienced. Many times it means going down by the beach of Lake Michigan, regardless of the season. Japanese steamed veggies......a perfect choice! I always cook with those.
ReplyDeleteIt's the solitude I crave. And the smallness I feel.
DeleteThe chicken teriyaki sounds delicious. I and the girls used to make chicken wings with teriyaki on the grill that were to die for but I cannot remember how we did it. And daughters can't either.
ReplyDeleteLook up Chinese Shuffle on youtube and watch some of the videos...I think you might be interested...a teacher came up with it as a way to give his class a break...and he added more moves as they went along. I think it would be good exercise, but have not attempted it, but I should. LOL
Enjoyed your pics.
Just watched Chinese shuffle. Top much bouncing & jumping. Tai Chi is totally different.
DeleteI know it is different...I just think a person would really get a lot of exercise with the shuffle...get a lot of steps. Tai chi would be even harder for me...LOL It wears on my nerves even watching it. Which probably means it would be real good for me to try to do it.
DeleteI have watch my heart rate! Or end up in ER or worse.
DeleteI'm happy for you and am inspired by your energy!
ReplyDeleteIt's better than lethargic "woe is me" attitude.
DeleteStunning photos. Those man o' wars give me chills.
ReplyDeleteI'd much rather see them washed ashore instead of stepping on them while wading!
DeleteGlad to hear you're back in the groove. I used to do tai chi and every once in awhile think about taking it up again. :-)
ReplyDeleteI think it's beneficial.
