To continue my trek, after I showed you a partial tally of the swallows along the river, I encountered a bit more wildlife [and tame] while I walked. On the hill, a lone white tailed doe was feeding on the grasses. That is the main reason, during the summer months, I like going here at an ungodly early hour, the deer are usually out if full force. 90% of the time anyway.
I walked along the road a bit, turned off at the boardwalk. A sweet retriever was doing his morning walk ritual with his papa too. I thought of Eileen. And hiding in the dew laden grass along the field, a cottontail was hoping the furry pooch didn't notice. I don't think the dog was in a hunting mood. It looked well-fed and not hungry in the least. Too hot to chase after bunnies, besides!!
And the river was quiet and still, if the water was clearer, it'd have been mirror like. Instead it's more like pea soup...still pretty in its own way.

Then, coming back out from the back woods area along the boardwalk, I spied two! Two beautiful creatures and I stood still and watched them. Of course, as they munched on green morsels, they kept an eye on me too. I love deer. Their silence, their stature, their everything. To top it off, there was a three point buck! I haven't seen a buck in nearly a year. Mostly yearlings, fawns, and does. So, this was a special treat. I'm not sure, but I think the doe is about ready to birth too. At some angles, I could even see the shape of a small body in her womb. I imagine the time is close. [and yes, I looked it up when I got home, In south Texas the white tailed deer mate in December/January and birth approximately 200 days afterward. That'd be about July and/or August.]

A very pregnant mama to be

The return of the Retriever on the road; they took off to the dense woods to safety!
You've changed your blog to chickadees. So pretty and artistic! I love the way the sun is shining on the deer. And she REALLY does look pregnant!
ReplyDeleteMaybe a fawn in the future visits!
DeleteGreat photos! I agree with Ginny, your new background is really pretty. Those deer have the sweetest expressions and wouldn’t be surprised if you see the baby next time.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to see a little one on a return trip.
DeleteWhat an exciting walk!

DeleteIt was a good one. (Always is...if mosquitoes are not around, lol)
Hi Anni a lovely walk as always. Thanks for sharing. Ironically, I have just visited Eileen's blog and saw her Memory of Goldie Girl in the side bar. There you capture a retriever with its owner walking as well. Be safe. Jo
ReplyDeleteEileen loved her Goldie!
DeleteHello Anni,
ReplyDeleteThanks for mentioning my blog. I love the dogs and still miss my Goldie Girl. Your deer photos are awesome, the buck is handsome. Great walk and beautiful series of photos.
Thank you for linking up and sharing your post. Have a great day and a happy weekend! PS, thank you for the visit and comment on my blog.
Oh you're welcome. I know how you loved your Goldie!
DeleteWhat a treat to see all those deer. That one does look pregnant. Maybe next time you go there you'll see the whole family.
ReplyDeleteI can only hope.
DeleteShe sure does look pregnant. I hope to see some pictures of her fawn one day soon, too. I love deer, too, and wish they would stay out of the street, but they don't know any better. It's important to watch out for them. :-)
ReplyDeleteYa, there's that. But not only deer, but a number of other animals want on the other side of the road. At least in this park, the driving speed is FIVE miles an hour!
DeleteShe is either pregnant of suffering from bloat. It seems what ever it is is getting all the groceries. She really looks thin otherwise. Hope that is a baby and you get to see it.
ReplyDeleteAll the nutrients are otherwise digested for baby I think. Nature works wonders.
DeleteI would consider this a great day! We don't see near the deer we used to.
ReplyDeleteThis park always has deer in the morning.
DeleteWhat a great trip!
ReplyDeleteOur deer have been frequent around us. Oour fawns were born in May, though.
Ya, deer in Colorado had babies early in Spring too.
DeleteHow amazing to see an expectant deer! That is a priceless sighting and photo!
ReplyDeleteIt was something y'don't see every day. :-)
DeleteYour shot so details.....yes, I agree with you and believe that the doe is pregnant...great shot.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend
Thanks Tanza. As always.
DeleteI have seen a lot of retrievers and I do love them but I have never seen deer like to eat in the wild only in zoos so I would have died of joy and snap myself silly. Love that pregnant lady
ReplyDeleteYa, I always go overboard with the shutter button. Y'never know what shot you may miss!
DeleteGood afternoon, how are you? I'm Brazilian and I'm looking for new followers for my blog. And I will follow yours with pleasure. New friends are also welcome, no matter the distance.

Thanks for visiting Luiz
DeleteBeautiful photos, and yes, that doe is about to become a mama! Now you will have to go back and watch for her with her fawn(s). Where we lived before this house we had many deer and fawns to enjoy. I miss them, so am happy to see yours here. And your chickadees are s sweet. Very lovely pictures. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI must go back soon.
DeleteThat doe does look very pregnant.
ReplyDeleteI think so too.
DeleteOh I love to watch the deer too. How blessed we are to have some who live at Happy Trails.
ReplyDeleteYes, you are.
DeleteI love seeing deer too - except on the road when I'm driving!
ReplyDeleteThat doe really does look like the baby is coming soon!
Road kill is sad, all too common.
