PINS

What I started to blog about Thursday didn't get done because of the Terrorist scare on the Naval Base. So, I will begin with this. My Day Trippin' to Padre Island National Seashore. Remember this is a federal park ...there is an entrance fee [unless you're a senior]. It's about 30-35 miles from my home, and the Park Road is through the grasslands between the Gulf of Mexico's dunes and Laguna Madre(pronounced Lah GOO nah MAH dray)-[part of the intercoastal waterway]. I drove through the park gate, which didn't have any park ranger there at that hour, and drove through the park as far as a passenger car can go to the end of the road that takes you over the sandy beaches. On the beach you can park your vehicle and get out and walk the shore. It was shortly past sunrise when I began my 10000 steps [five mile] walk, so a lot of photos can seem dark and birds silhouetted.  By the way, this is the park where each summer they have several days of baby turtle releases...this year, sadly it's been canceled for the entire summer.

After I finished my 2.5 miles and then make my u-turn to complete the 5 miles, I hopped back in the car and stopped at another area called Bird Basin. This basin is part of the Laguna...and most times of the year I can walk the flatlands and mudflats and find the endangered plovers. This time, I spotted only two, with three long billed curlews. And a rain-filled flat just near the parking lot, I spotted gulls, sandpipers, godwits, and of course, grackles. Then, it was time to head back home and prepare  for lunch. I hope someday soon, Bud and I can stop [no, he wasn't with me] after walking and dine out. I'm ready for a burger and fries...INSIDE a restaurant, and not take out. [by the time you get home with take-out, it's too cold to enjoy and warming it up in the microwave makes the food tough!]. I'll wait.

I'll share today, some of my beach walk, then the next blog post will be Laguna Madre.  Here goes:

Locally we call the park PINS [Padre Island National Seashore]...hence, the title for this blog.

    1. There are hundreds of people each time on the release date (again, the corona virus strikes).

  5. I immediately thought of you when I heard about the attack. I also remembered going by the naval air station on one of the auto tours Ron’s mother and step-father would take us on when we’d visit. Corpus Christi is such a beautiful city. Again, your photos are captivating. Happy Memorial Day weekend!!

  11. Impressed with your determination to get in the 5 miles. With such a lovely place to walk, it is probably easier than it sounds. Clever overlap of the tern fishing.
