Running late in the morning, I decided to not walk much in the heat. It was already 85 degrees outside. I had to go to the grocery store for bottled water [yes, we DO drink bottled water...but we recycle the plastic bottles...always!] We've had so many times that there was/is a boil water alert issued here in the city, that instead of taking chances and drinking from the tap, we feel safer with bottled water. Anyway... Coming back from the island drive on Sunday I stopped at the store on the way home for water, and that particular store did not have our brand. Instead, I just got back in the car and drove home. Since I was out again, I thought I'd check out the small neighborhood park lake and see what's happenin' in the 'hood!! I wasn't all that ambitious to begin with, so just once around the lake would have to suffice...The lake: Thru the trees...

....this is a very small park in area. And, it's very family friendly. Old folk and young families frequent this park to feed the duck population and make use of the BBQ pits and picnic areas, along with a small play area with swings and a slide. Lots of water fowl...mostly domestic. Sometimes a wild bird will show up, [seagulls, sparrows, cormorants, egrets and the like] but for the most part, ducks and geese. A lot of turtles also.

This time of year the pollen-laden trees play havoc with those that have allergies. The catkins and tree blossoms are heavy this year. [catkins are the fuzzy blossoms that will seed] The yellow blossom is of the Palo Verde Tree which is technically a weed, but if left alone it will become tree-like. We had several on our property in Tucson, and when the blossoms fell, it looked like yellow snow. Oh and the bark is a lime green!! The name literally means green stick. The image of the flower is the Palo Verde, the catkins is of the willow...

Today, the 19th, is my youngest's birthday. Erik is 48. Whoa. Time flies.
I did not know about this plant at all. The one on the left is so cool, it looks like a feather duster.
ReplyDeleteIt's a willow tree catkin.
DeleteLime green bark, I would like to see that one.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to Erik

Nice to know you enjoyed the short walk!
DeleteI am so impressed with your ability to exercise in that sort of heat. And the pictures show a lovely place to walk, if one can handle it. This time of year I am dependent on allergy medicine. :-)
ReplyDeleteReally not much of a workout in the heat...just a slow meander in the fresh air.
DeleteHappy Birthday Erica. Your walks are so beautiful, I've never seen nor heard of a Palo Verde tree, it is just lovely as are the Catkins.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteThat is pretty hot to be walking. Hardly ever gets that hot here in western MD.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a nice place to walk though.
Happy Birthday to Erik.
Thanks! These days, tho I am known to complain, I'll take heat over winter!
DeleteI do so love your tree photos. The greenies are neat too (at the end).
ReplyDeleteThey are VERY pretty ducks with that iridescent colors.
DeleteYikes that is getting hot to walk.
ReplyDeleteLoved that shot of the 2 ducks? in the opening surrounded by the trees.
Happy Birthday to Erik.
Thanks Patti!
DeleteI always enjoy those family friendly parks. Love the flowers.
ReplyDeleteThey are good for families, but can be littered badly at times. Especially now with few city parks employees.
DeleteLoved the photos of the lake and I especially enjoyed the one with the turtle on the log. Have a grand day!
ReplyDeleteThis park is loaded with turtles!
DeleteWhat a pretty walk but I sure don't care for the humidity..
ReplyDeleteWe drink bottled water too most of the time and recycle the plastic.
Love the photos of the critters.
Sue

Happy birthday to your son!

DeleteOh, gosh, I had never thought to look up the Palo Verde Trees...they are beautiful. I love a lot of these photos, and I just love seeing turtles! I have no idea why they bring me such joy, but they do.
ReplyDeleteI like turtles too!
DeleteI enjoy seeing all the great walks you take us on with their beautiful flowers and wildlife. Thanks Anni :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Denise.
DeletePretty views of the lake and its 'wildlife' - with summer's heat coming on, even small lakes are a cool blessing. Never heard of a weed that is tree-like - interesting!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day!
They become trees.
