Are you one of those that has caught onto the Baby Yoda craze that is supposedly [according to a lot of websites -news and personal] sweeping the world with love and now the anticipation of Disney coming out this Spring with toys? I read where some woman was under a copyright infringement and Disney made her stop what she was doing or face a lawsuit? She had a really cute crocheted baby Yoda, and was selling the pattern which, most definitely breaks copyright laws. Then, just this last week, a bar created a Baby Yoda cocktail...a margarita-like alcoholic drink...the glass was draped in a brown napkin for 'his' costume [tied with a small jute string at the waist], dark cherries for the eyes, margarita inside the goblet and lime slices for the ears...it is a close likeness also...so, why isn't he under the same lawsuit? He too is making money from his creation? Guess Disney can't fight ALL the bars around the globe. Who knows. Double standards. Technically, the news stations and even Google is making money on the Yoda articles [advertising from each click or tuned in TV]. Hmmmm.
I snatched this photo with intentions of sketching it. But, I thought otherwise even tho I wouldn't make money off my drawing [I wouldn't sell it], I am thinking I'd be infringing of their copyright. But, if one lady is breaking the law, I figure the bars are also. What gives?
Anyway, I am contemplating buying the plush doll that comes out by Disney in May for my movie-themed bedroom. Even tho, the 'net and media is over-saturated with this phenomenon, and I'm tired of seeing him in all his cuteness everywhere I look. We'll see. That way, I can honestly say, " I bought a new TOY YODA!' [*say toy Yoda fast; three times].
Here is a crochet pattern for free

I don't watch those movies so don't know about Baby Yoda, except of course the ads for the movies, we fast forward ads, but I did get a fleeting view of the baby yoda on the TV Screen. Never saw the grown Yoda either, but do know he is out there. doesn't make sense about the bar and the lady crocheting but our world has become one big senses ball of yarn these days. I once tried to read copyright laws on something I was researching and was totally lost. I do know if I invented something I would not want anyone else using my idea. years ago I posted a comic strip on my blog because it was so funny. 2 months later the artist sent me a message I was in violation of his copyright and please remove which I did. not sure how that works either. it had his name on the cartoon.
ReplyDeletelove the new black and white flowers
ReplyDeleteThanks Sandra
DeleteIt's really strange. I'm sure Disney will have me take Yoda off my blog soon enough. If I don't take it off beforehand.
DeleteI've still only seen 1½ Starwars movie(s)...!
ReplyDeleteThey're okay, but for me the first was the BEST!
DeleteYes, I have been reading about this on the computer. He IS very cute. But Disney has so much money anyway, maybe they could leave a few creative souls alone? What do you think?
ReplyDeleteAs with any big corporation...the more they make, the more they want.
DeleteMakes one wonder about pictures that aren't our own getting us in trouble. Hope Disney is busy elsewhere and doesn't notice yours. He really is cute and if they can make one that does windows, I'm in.
ReplyDeleteRofl...you don't want much from your toys. Lol
DeleteThis is the first I've heard of the baby yoda. I've never been a big star wars fan. You wouldn't believe how many people sell things online that are breaking copyright laws. I think it's just a matter of whether or not they get caught because all of them, even if they are just using the name, are guilty. A lady called the store the other day wanting me to put batman on a cake. I told her I didn't have any batman and I couldn't draw anything because it was copyright infringement.
ReplyDeletePresley is too young to grandma Ann all hyped up about action toys. Just wait!
DeleteHe is cute....Roger used to love star wars...I can take or leave, but did enjoy the first one.
ReplyDeleteErik is our star Wars buff!
DeleteHe is cute. We watched the movie with the kids last week. Also, Abominable!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen this last star wars release yet.
DeleteI've seen all the hype but haven't indulged in the merchandise. I do wonder about the double standard you pointed out. They should both, or neither, be a copyright infringement. My 2 cents. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat makes two of us!
