The morning started off slow [for me, 'cause I try to get there as the starting gun is shot...but this time around I arrived early and had to stand around through the opening ceremonies with a drone covering the live show, and the national anthem before I could get to walking the 5K designated route which equals a fraction over 3 miles. Finally, we're off. The morning was sunny, a slight ocean breeze blew in on us, keeping the body temps down a bit. Don't get me wrong...a paced walk with high humidity still gets you a'sweatin'!!!!
The crowd was phenomenal. The pledges were in, everyone was anxious and anticipating their time to completion. The last lap is climbing the 20 steep steps up to where the concessions stands are....one round about at the Houston Astros Farm Team's ballpark [What-a-burger Field]. which is easy slopes along the berm and stands, where it's shaded. But I get ahead of myself...
I have no idea how much was raised this year for heart/stroke research [the total numbers aren't posted yet], but in Texas alone, in 2018, the heart walks around the state raised a whopping 31 million dollars. I am hoping this year it will be more. Just this ONE heart walk, in Corpus Christi, I'd estimate that there were 1000 to 1500 walkers [humans, baby carriages, and DOGS included] that was willing and able to attend. Here are some photos from the morning....

[the sting ray mascot in costume is Corpus Christi's Ice Hockey...the Ice Rays]
At the end, I stopped, rested, cooled down and replenished my electrolytes with water and banana before heading home, ready to call it a day. By the way, my red ball cap has the American Heart Association logo and the word "survivor" on its bill. Total this year was 8896 steps, time 1 hour and 6 minutes; which I added to the bottom of my blog page to compare previous years' walking time and distance in steps.

Congratulations!! That is quite a distance in the humidity. Wow, there were a lot of people! You look so cute in that cap. And you look cool, calm, and collected.
ReplyDeleteI think this was one of the largest groups in the 3 yrs. I've attended.

Kat & pup are a sweet duo!
DeleteAnd thank you C! I love reading about bookoh bucks raised!
WTG, Anni! I don't know if I could stand the humidity/heat. And I used to work out in the weather all year long. But I was always out early in the heat and warmed with the day and it did not bother me.
