Danger Ahead!!

It's kinda been a busy week, but nothing much got done. It's Springtime in Texas and yard work takes precedence over everything else. Thursday morning I DID go to the islands for a break of cleaning, trimming, and mowing..  I haven't taken time to do a blog recently, so thought I'd write up one today...

It was a very foggy, damp morning. My first stop was a birding hotspot, Paradise Pond [you will be able to see the birds I photographed on Saturday's weekly post, at my bird photo blog]. If you have ever visited my bird blog, you then know that one area was completely destroyed during Hurricane Harvey in August, 2017. And, you will also know that it has been re-opened this March with a brand new, much improved birdwalk.  My 2nd stop...

Leonabelle Refuge in the fog:

Along the way out to go to the beach, I spied a few blooming flowers!

As I reached the access road to the beach and ship jetty, many dozens of seagulls and terns greeted me with a loud ruckus. I got out of the car and walked the jetty in the fog. I could NOT see the Gulf of Mexico at all!!! But, as I walked in silence, I could hear the ships' fog horns. I LOVE that SOUND!! Barely visible was the ship channel and I was just feet from that!! I spied a few die-hard fishermen as I walked on the jetty toward the Coast Guard Facility and the Marine Science Institute. Many birds were in the tidal basin...then I stopped DEAD IN MY TRACKS. Just less than two weeks have passed since I was here last, but where I stopped, the jetty has broken loose; it wasn't a couple of weeks ago!!! DANGER ahead, and absolutely no cordoned/warning tape!! I stopped at the Ferry Landing and reported the damage. It has been weakened with...yes, the hurricane in 2017. And crazy people...they're fishing on this...it could break off at any time with the continual erosion and water from the tanker and cargo ships' wake, and I fear what would be flooded and how many lives  and vehicles [parking is just inches away from the jetty] lost!!!

  1. What? The Jerry had broken loose and people still fishing there? No matter that they know how to swim... If it went down, the water will pull them down too. It's just too dangerous and not worth the risk for a hobby.

  2. I had already got Yay for improved birdwalk ready in my head for comment but then read about your stop in your tracks. so glad you did not get hurt in the heavy fog. I love the sound of fog horns and the mournful wail of trains. every morning at 4 am, I can hear the train mourn, and sometimes at other times during the day

    1. Me too. It's insane to not warn people of the impending danger of it all.

  6. That is so scary! You escaped with your life! Good thing you watch where you are stepping and were cautious! Your misty pictures are beautiful! Wish I knew what these pretty flowers are. Now I will be hearing lonesome foghorns in my head all day; a wonderful sound. There is nothing like it. Except maybe a train whistle at dusk.

    1. The yellow is a kind of daisy. (We had them in Tucson). The pink is oleander. And the blue/purple is blue salvia.

  9. The lack of common sense in some people never ceases to amaze me. One day you'll read about it on the front page of the newspaper... the jetty giving way and people's lives lost. There's no fixing them & their lack of caution. I love a fog horn too, especially at night. That and a train whistle. Love, Andrea xoxo

    1. I know...it's like common sense flew the coop. And it's not just the younger generation.

    1. Typical thinking...they'll wait 'til something drastic/tragic happens before taking precautions.
