After I left the turtle hatchlings [link] at Malaquite Beach on North Padre Island, I took the 'back' road from the parking lot. With a sole purpose of birding. Some time ago, when Bud and I drove the area I took, we saw Bobwhite Quail. So, naturally, I take that exit instead of the parking lot exit. lol Well, in the golden light of the early morning, I didn't spot any quail - BUT...I saw two white tail deer. They looked young...one had new antlers in velvet. Naturally, they no doubt spotted my car long before I saw them. They were grazing on all the green grasses! And it IS green. Usually, by mid-July the dunes and surrounding area are parched and drying...

After stopping to photograph the pair, I headed out of the federal park land with a short detour onto another park road that traverses through the dunes to another beach access. Again, looking for birds. No special sightings; year 'round residents, gulls and pelicans. Railroad vine and sea oats dotted the landscape...

...one last pit stop back on the park highway, a duck pond with a duck blind. Looking out the peep holes, some of the turtle watchers were leaving and the white sand along the dunes lit up the backdrop...

It sure is pretty there and it looks so peaceful
ReplyDeleteIt IS quiet & VERY peaceful!
DeleteThere is nothing like the early mornings when things just start to stir...and nobody around!
ReplyDeleteI'm a morning person...it's a most perfect time of day.
DeleteReally neat pictures of those pretty deer, Anni. Love all your other pictures, too. :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks D J
DeleteI am leaning towards number 7 photo as my favorite of the deer. love them all. and that last dune is gorgeous and amazing
ReplyDeleteThanks ... your kind words mean a lot.
DeleteWonderful pictures of the deer! The purple flower is beautiful! Pelicans are exotic to me, we have none. I have never seen a real one.
ReplyDeletePelicans remind me of flying dinosaurs you see in picture books.
DeleteLove the deer. We've found a spot on the edge of town where they eat at dusk. Sometime we just drive over there to see them.
ReplyDeleteI'd do the very same!
DeleteWhat a pretty spot. I love the deer!
ReplyDeleteIt's a very nice area. Never crowded (except for turtle releases)
DeleteLooks and sounds like a wonderful drive.
ReplyDeleteThat it is, thanks Ruth
DeleteReally wonderful photos, Anni. Thanx.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Thanks Victor
DeleteAll photos are inspiring as I remember the sea oats and pelicans. I think your deer are mule deer and not white tailed. They look so very different than the ones here.
ReplyDeleteThey're white tail! Any game warden will tell you. Mule deer are quite a bit stockier & the tail shape is different...white tail's are thinner & longer. Texas coast- white tail.
DeleteOK, thanks. The very long ears fooled me.
DeleteNo problem...they ate so similar.
DeleteThank you for sharing these wonderful photos. You always take us on such interesting places and their beauty you describe so well! Have a grand weekend!
ReplyDeleteThank YOU Cathy. Hope your week ahead is super.
DeleteHow lovely to see the deer!
ReplyDeleteThey were pretty!
DeleteWe have a small family of Deer that come and visit us almost every day. However due to LACK of rain, they are coming less frequently as the ponds are drying up Thank you for sharing
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame
