NOTE: The mystery photo I shared in my previous post is nothing but a piece of decayed palm frond!

This is Gator Lake and a Tahitian - style Gazebo on the lake's bank.

Snakes?!! Time for me to exit, stage left!!!
Altho I took my walk in a dense fog on Sunday morning and got some very interesting photos along the river banks and park area, I thought I'd post my walk from last week at the Botanical Gardens instead. I'll get the fog photos up for the next time i publish a blog post. I'll begin with the section of the hummingbird garden. The grounds-keepers have several feeders and have planted special flowers that attract hummingbirds....

The desert section was filled with night-blooming cactus flowers the day I was there. With the promise of many, many flower buds awaiting their turn to open and attract night feeding birds and bats.

This is Gator Lake and a Tahitian - style Gazebo on the lake's bank.

The area with the sunflowers is another garden of wildflowers and a windmill with fountain...the path with the sign shows you're about to enter the elevated bird tower that has views of Gator Lake.

...and on the lake as I walked the pathway I spotted a mama Mottled Duck with two of her ducklings!!

Throughout the grounds, many land birds and shorebirds can be found. There is another larger area lake on the other side of the garden grounds and Oso Creek even farther away; still on the property. All during my walk early in the morning [I get there before it opens to the public - being a member has its quirks and I can get into the 'park' before others], the birdsong was resonating everywhere...the flight of some interrupted my steps as I had to stop and see what bird it was....Many, many cardinals were busy chowing down, and a couple -one male and one female- were in search of nesting material. I spied the female as it flew into the thicket...carrying what I thought was tissue paper...But...it wasn't upon closer inspection!! It was snake skin!!!!

Snakes?!! Time for me to exit, stage left!!!
I always love your photographs and could look at them all day long!!
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda
DeleteEw. Yes, I can tell in that last picture that it IS snake skin! I think my favorite here is the duck and her cute babies!
ReplyDeleteThey were so cute!
DeleteOMG, It was a palm frond? I thought for sure it was some kind of rare and strange bug.
ReplyDeleteI guess the cardinals have designer decor in their nest with a snake skin rug.
LOL on the snake skin rug.
DeleteGood morning Anni. Enjoyed your wonderful pictures this morning.
ReplyDeleteThanks Paula...how have you been? I don't see you blogging lately?!!
DeleteOh how gross- snake skin! How cool to walk the grounds before the crods come in- I would love that.
ReplyDeleteIt's very nice to avoid the crowds.
DeleteI didn't think the creepy thing was alive, and I was right for a change. And I loved going along with you on this morning walk. I even enjoyed seeing the snakeskin. :-)
ReplyDeleteWell then, you were right that it wasn't alive! Not me...I even hate snake SKINS!
DeleteHa ha! We have a snakeskin hanging from a mounted deer antler that is hanging on the wall. I found it inside the cabin a couple of years ago. I had accidently let a tiny snake in when I opened the door and never could find it. Well it must have grown and I still can't find it.
ReplyDeleteOh lordy...how I hate snakes!
Deletebe still my heart on those ducklings. and that cactus flower gave me a few nice heartbeats also. so beautiful... even the snakeskin is pretty.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the ducks & flowers. But, the snake skin ... not so much.
DeleteWhat a beautiful place!
ReplyDeleteLove the little ducklings
Hope you are having a great day!
Springtime is a great place for this area!
Deletegreat Cardinal photos...and, who would think they might use a snakeskin for anything? ... strange indeed......
ReplyDeleteI know, huh?!
DeleteWonderful set of photos. I am not sure I would get any walking done, surrounded by all that beauty and all the birds.
ReplyDeleteOh oh...your link takes me to Google plus. Can't open your blog to leave a comment, tho.
DeleteLooks like a beautiful place for walking and spying birds. The flowers are beautiful. The cardinal posed perfectly for you. I always thought finding a snake skin meant there was a snake nearby, which meant leave the area immediately. I'm not a fan of snakes! Guess birds don't mind the skin was formally part of a snake.
ReplyDeleteDepending on where the skin was found. She could've flown some distance.
DeleteSnakes, Yuk! Nice to see the Cardinal, though!
ReplyDeleteI know...snake!! Yuk
DeleteLooks like a wonderful place to visit! Great hummingbird garden.
ReplyDeleteIt is a good place for birding & flowers
DeleteCardinals are my favorite bird... Love the male and female appearance. Haven't seen any my way... Have a wonderful day
ReplyDelete...one of my favorites too!
DeleteLovely pictures, and superb looking Cardinal
ReplyDeleteThanks Adam!
DeleteOh, haha! I was convinced that palm frond was a dead blow-fish! Love the little ducklings and the cardinal. We don't have cardinals here. They must be so amazing to see! x K
