1] For quite some time, I have often picked up and read the back cover of this paperback. I find it when I peruse the Texas bookshelves at Half Price Books. For some reason all the books pertaining to the state of Texas are NOT half price! Anyway, I have read this back cover synopsis and have been tempted to buy it. Well, I did finally 'cause I found it in the clearance shelf in the store for only $2. I'm really pleased with it. Very easy to read...it travels through the leaving of Scotland aboard a ship and their family trip across the Atlantic to the state of Texas; homesteading. The title of the book is "I am Falon". About a nearly-15-year-old-girl, and her story of life relocating to the United States and chancing upon the Texas Frontier which is still part of Mexico in this book's era. It's a page turner!! After so many disappointing books I've picked up... finally, a very enjoyable saga with an eye-opener confession near the end of the novel. I'm recommending it if you like historical novels.

2] We bought a set of DVDs from way back when!! Do any of you remember the time when TV had mini-series? Like Thorn Birds, Roots, Backstairs at the White House...ones such as these? Well, the two of us have often talked about one of our favorites...Rich Man Poor Man. I went out to Amazon and ordered it. It's just as good as it was way back in 1976!!! Whoa...that's nearly 40 years ago. I remember we did nothing...had NOTHING planned for those nights it was televised. So we could be home, sit down, and not miss an episode. We already have the set of The Thorn Birds, and Roots. And one from A&E....Horatio Hornblower [that is entertaining, tho fictional] I'm now thinking I might just as well order Back Stairs at the White House also. 'Tis another good one; one mini series both Bud and I enjoyed long ago. In my opinion, today's TV just isn't as good and not even close to being stimulating, unless you like reality tv and dancing with the stars which are all 'fixed'.
3] Last week, a weak storm front was situated just off the coast of Texas...bringing us in Corpus Christi much needed rain. At times it rained hard, fast, and furious. Not enough to quench the drought situation, but I'll take all we get for now!! Our lawn was looking mighty pitiful...especially when there were watering restrictions! Bring on the rain. I'm so ready for it.
4] By the way, since Random Friday is no longer a weekly meme, Tanya has recently started a new meme of five random thoughts....Willy Nilly Friday 5. Join in. Here's the link. I like it very much. It gives me a chance to voice opinions and thoughts that have come up during the week.

This man looks familiar, but I just can't place him. I hope you will tell us! Your Canna Lily flower is just divine!
ReplyDeleteI think you just may be surprised as to who he really is!!
DeleteDear Anni, He does look familiar but I am not sure. Beautiful flowers. Blessings dear and hope all is well. Catherine
ReplyDeleteI hope all is well with you too, Catherine!!
DeleteAh ha! Last night we were watching something on TV (don't ask me what, I wasn't paying much attention) but the scene changed to Corpus Christi and hubby mentioned how beautiful it is, and I thought to myself, 'that's where Anni is'... You are in a beautiful spot there!
ReplyDelete....well now...are you ready to travel? Bring your red car and we'll zoom the 'hood!!!
DeleteI really like the landscape in your SkyWatch image. The field is so inviting.
ReplyDeleteMersad
Mersad Donko Photography
It's reed [or cattails]!!! There is a huge pond right in front of the reed.
DeleteWe received much needed rain also.
ReplyDeleteThe canna along the fence is very pretty. Love the frog!
I just want more. Isn't that always true?
DeleteWhat a lovely Canna Lily, excellent presentation of it too. Do you dig up the blubs and bring them inside each fall? The TV star, hmmm, his smile reminds me of someone but I can't place him. Now I'm curious. Let us know who he is okay?
ReplyDeleteNo Karen, we don't have to dig up any bulbs...it never freezes a hard freeze down this far south. And yes, I will tell you who it is. I promise.
DeleteI will have to ask husband if he knows that face. Amazing you got that frog so close and the Canna lily is so September-ish.
ReplyDeletewell, I have a good sized zoom lens. He was actually more than 20-25 feet away from me.
DeleteWhat an interesting post, and yes, I should check into that book. No idea who the celebrity is. That's an amazing frog frog. Reminds me of Marlon Brando in his later years.
ReplyDeleterofl....on the 'reminder'!!!
DeleteI don't know who the guy is but I love it when I take a chance on a book and it works out great.
ReplyDeleteNext week, I hope to remember to tell y'all who he is.
DeleteSuch a pretty canna. The man looks familiar because he resembles Eric, my cousin, but he's in the Army, so its not him.....hmmmm, unless he has a secret life ;)
ReplyDeleteNope...not Eric. :-)
DeleteThey really don't make miniseries anymore do they?? I remember watching Roots as a child. The best miniseries ever in my humble opinion. Did you watch that one?
ReplyDeleteOh yes....ROOTS was excellent. We have the DVD set of that one also.
DeleteGreat post, as always, Anni...no idea who the man is. Love the fence and flowers.
ReplyDelete...thanks bj
DeleteLovely photos. Yes, I DO remember the mini-series that used to be on TV. We planned our evenings around them, so we wouldn't miss one! No DVRs back then! We have a Roku, and watch lots of British TV, now. Much more entertaining than the garbage on our networks. I'll check out the Meme you linked! Thanks!
ReplyDeletewe watch quite a bit online .... we haven't had TV cable for nearly two years, and I don't miss it at all.
Deletelove that Ribbit shot and don't know the man. bob and i were just discussing the old mini series...we miss them. great fence shot . so glad you got that needed rain...
ReplyDelete...thanks Sandra....we need more rain. Unlike you in Florida, we don't get much these days. Need MORE.
Deleteoops, meant to say I LOVE YOUR HEADER...
ReplyDelete...again, thanks!!
DeleteNo, I don't know who that guy is. But I sure did enjoy your post this morning anyway! Yes, I remember those mini-series, and some of them are classics, well worth watching again. :-)
ReplyDelete...again, and again.
Deletelovely canna on that fence! wow! cute frog. hooray for rain!!! we got 1/2 inch last weekend and i (and the earth) rejoiced! can't say i recognize the fellow.
ReplyDelete...if your area of Texas is like ours, we need a LOT more rain. Hope some more storms head our way/and yours!!
DeleteLove the flower on the fencing. And he is familiar to me also, but can't place him. I've never been good with that. :)
ReplyDelete...thanks Amy. I'll reveal his name next week.
Deletei thought he looked like sunny, from sunny & cher, but i know that's not who it is!!! you made that simple chain link fence look beautiful!!!!
ReplyDelete...ya, he does resemble Sonny. You're right.
Delete...thanks Debbie
Love the cannas at the fence. Such great composition and bright and cheerful. I love cannas from afar, not so much up close.
ReplyDelete...those lilies were one of my father's favorite flowers.
DeleteThe canna lily in the chain link fence is stunning, And I love Jeremiah! Have a great day. (And no, I have no idea who the celeb is)
ReplyDelete...thanks Jo
DeleteLovely photo of the Canna at the fence. I do remember watching Rich Man Poor Man, and Roots. We used to gather with a group of our friends every Saturday evening to watch it together. Great series ( with no bad language back then!)
ReplyDeleteYou're right on!!! No foul language needed. Just a good wholesome program.
DeleteThe ship reminds me of when we lived next to the Mississippi River in New Orleans, except that we were below sea level and much of the ship's hull would be visible above the levee!
ReplyDeleteI've oftentimes wondered just how N. O. stayed 'unflooded' being that it's below sea level.
DeleteThe lovely lily is a perfect contrast with the chin link fence.
ReplyDelete...thanks Pat
DeleteGlad you found a good book!
ReplyDeleteI watched several of those tv miniseries and enjoyed them, but not that one. I should look into purchasing some.
I don't know who that celebrity is - hope you share!
...it's a good series. And, yes, I will share next week. I hope I remember to do so. lol
DeleteGlorious photos! All it takes is a lovely flower to dress a chain-link fence :)
ReplyDeleteIndeed!! Thanks Debbie
DeleteI have no idea who the fella was, hope you will tell us. Beautiful closeup of the Canna Lily against the fence and the sky shot is awesome.
ReplyDelete...thanks Stephanie.
DeleteGreat post. Today I'm just visiting for Good Fences. I'll comment again tomorrow for Willy Nilly Friday. That Canna Lily was gorgeous. Such bright colors.
ReplyDelete...thanks Ida.
DeleteI was going to guess one of the Smother's brothers...but I think not.
ReplyDeleteI have watched a lot of barges...mostly container ships glide through that channel.
Janey
...it's fun to watch them...especially I watch the dolphins if I'm close to the channel.
DeleteHmm...I don't think I recognize that face. I agree with you about television today. I watched alot of mini-series- North and South, Roots, Shaka Zulu, Lonesome Dove...those I remember. I don't watch much of anything these days- I think 24 hour media is the devil's playground.
ReplyDeleteNorth and South...I forgot about that one!!
Delete...devil's playground....so true, so true.
Good to see that barge, although I'm guessing that the day is humid, humid, humid!
ReplyDeleteSWF: Clearing the Flyway
...always humid here. Even in winter.
DeleteWonderful captures for the day, Anni, as always and a great post in general!! I haven't watched or even had my TV on in well over a year, but I was never an avid watcher to begin with -- just a weirdo??? What can I say!! Hope you have a great weekend!! Enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteI think you're wise!!! I wish I'd been 'brave' enough to not have TV for so long. I'm loving having no tv/commercials now.
DeleteGlad you had a nice rain. We had one today. As you say, not enough but it's a start.
ReplyDelete...it hasn't rained now for a couple of days...need more!!
DeleteOh, wow, I should do a post on your post! First, love your fence shot!
ReplyDeleteNow, I hope I can remember to do the Willy Nilly...the one time I actually thought of it, she was taking a break that week. Then I took a looonnng break. But I so enjoyed the Random Five posts...loved hearing other bloggers' thoughts.
Glad you found a book you like! That sounds like something I would like.
Have you read 'The Awakening Land' by Conrad Richter or seen the miniseries of it? I have read the book numerous times, and have watched the miniseries a time or two...liked it so much I bought it.
I totally agree with you about not much to watch on TV...always feel like the reality shows are scripted. I would like them if they weren't. I will see one of them and think, oh, that looks good, then about 5 minutes into the show I am ready to change channels...for reality, they do stupid stuff. Or have a big crisis ever little bit...I will hush on that subject...
I do find some things to watch on youtube...you should look up Good Night, Mr. Tom....the last I checked it comes in three parts. Everyone I have told about it likes it.
If it is left to me, I watch more Netflix or youtube than TV.
And back to reading, have you ever read any of James Alexander Thom's books--particularly Panther in the Sky, Follow the River, Long Knife, and From Sea to Shining Sea? Those 4 are my favorites...he has some I have not read...but those are historical based on facts.
I will hush..i just really enjoyed your 5...and no, I don't know who the guy is. I feel like I should.
Oh yes....Follow the River was an incredible read!!!
DeleteNo I don't know who that man is but I'll enjoy finding out. The books sounds like one I will enjoy reading, thanks for the recommend. I used to love that show, is it really 40 years? Wow! Thanks for stopping by, It's hard keeping up with everyone I know and appreciate the visit. I hope I'll have some birds for you next week, but I haven't been able to get out and take photos lately. Maybe out of my archives again. It is fun going through them and remembering when I took those photos. Have a great weekend :)
ReplyDelete...thanks Denise!!!
DeleteWonderful post filled with so many interesting sights and facts. Gorgeous photo of the flower.
ReplyDelete...thanks LV
DeleteGood fence and gates make good neighbors. For us it tree line.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on
...thanks!
DeleteIt's raining like crazy out there right now for us...love your post as usual! I remember just dying for the next episode of The Thornbirds! And Shogun! Of course, had to read the Thornbirds book! The new book you found does sound really good. Have you ever read These Is My Words by Nancy E. Turner? It's the first of a trilogy about Turner's great grandmother, a pioneer here in S AZ! Really good books! She's written two others not about her grandmother, and I have one beside my bed to read.
ReplyDeleteLove the canna, the sky and the frog! Can't figure out who the celebrity is! :-)
...dang. Wish it would rain like crazy here!!! lol
DeleteAnd yes, I can see one of your favorites was/is Richard Chamberlain?!!
No, I haven't read any of those books. Will have to look for 'em.
I just remembered another one...Centennial! Hung on the edge of my seat till it was time for that one too, and of course read that book and most of the rest by Michener! Boy, Richard Chamberlain was the mini-series King! :-) I can't believe you saw him jogging right next to you! How COOL! Is he really about 5'6"? Definitely check out those books I mentioned. I think you'll really like them. Take care!
DeleteMarie...you won't believe this...but I loved Centennial and saw Robert Conrad in a grocery store while they were filming in Colorado!!
DeleteNo, well, he [Richard C] seemed taller than that!! I was too busy watching his butt to be honest!!!
Oh, you are so lucky! :-) Nice butt, huh?....:-) And I'd love to see Robert Conrad! It would be great fun to see both of them! I have seen a few celebs: That actress that plays Janeway on one of those Star Trek spinoffs (not a Trekky, so I don't know which one)--she was in a hotel lobby in NY; Alexander Gudonov, Russian ballet dancer, who was leaning on a piano on the street in NY, listening to a guy play; and Glenn Close in a hospital waiting room where she had brought her daughter for some reason--it might have been NY but I think it was in Connecticut. None of my heart throbs, but still fun. :-) I have to say, seeing Glenn Close was probably the neatest experience of the three, I think because she's such a big star and this was such a "real life" moment.
Delete...lol....I never cared for Robert Conrad. Still don't. He has an ego that won't quit. In my opinion. Now, Glenn Close...that lady has a lot of pizazz!!
DeleteTHat lily shot is gorgeous! And a cute frog too.
ReplyDelete...thanks Fiona
DeleteThat book sounds like something I would love!! Thanks for the recommendation - I shall be on the watch for it! Perhaps on eBay.....
ReplyDeleteIf not eBay, try Abe Books online.
Deletei remember when roots came out and my mom would watch over at my grandpa and grandmas. i rented it a few years back at the library...still just as good. the frog photo is awesome! i am reading "lake wobegon days" written by garrison keiler, the guy from prairie home companion. i'm liking it. picked it up from goodwill! have a great weekend and thank you for linking to willy nilly!!
ReplyDelete...thank you for hosting Tanya
DeleteVery nice frog Jeremias!
ReplyDelete...thanks again.
DeleteThat's one beautiful lily in front of that fence! Now I've got that song running around my head, Jeremiah was a bullfrog! I LOVED Rich Man Poor Man. I was mad about Nick Nolte back in the day.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like Nick Nolte...still don't. But Peter Strauss....wowzers.
Delete...thanks Jim.
ReplyDelete...thanks Felicia
ReplyDeleteMorning Anni...Oh we are so late. First of all our internets would not work this morning. Then my peeps left for the weekly breakfast at Panera and a walk...finally at 10 am the cobwebs were out of the internets!! As always your post are so interesting and photos perfect. We did not recognize the celebrity. I did love Thorn Birds and Richard Chamberlain was always a favorite!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday hugs madi and mom
Hope your 'net woes are over!! Oh yes....Richard Chamberlain, I loved!!!
DeleteTold you I'd be back today for Willy-Nilly Friday 5.
ReplyDeleteI agree a lot of TV now is horrible but I must admit I watch DWTS and a few other Reality shows. Mindless entertainment but fun. - I am trying to figure out who your celebrity is but just can't put a name to the face.
I need to find a good book to read.
...mindless entertainment indeed. ;-)
DeleteTV still has miniseries--they're just aired on networks that aren't ABC, CBS, or NBC. I think there's one coming up this fall that's supposed to be really big but I can't remember what it is now. Narrowcasting--so many channels now, so few people are watching one program at any given time. It's kind of sad. Back in the old days, a TV show could be an event! (Like Who Shot JR?!)
ReplyDeleteLOL...back then, I could've cared less who shot JR!! Yep, I realize that your pay per view cable channels have series...but we don't have cable or TV anymore. And I'm thankful for that.
DeleteI watch most TV online. That's probably just as bad! Wish I could "cut the cord" and not watch TV at all.
DeleteDo you believe that I am reading Alice in the Wonderland?
ReplyDeleteWhy not? Actually, I think an adult would appreciate the story much better than a youngster. Sometimes it can be a bit scary.
DeleteI'm back to answer your question on my blog. Laura is actually 7 1/2 months pregnant. She just hid it well in that picture! :)
ReplyDeleteWe hear all the time that Heather looks like me. I can't see it, but have to believe it, after all the comments.
indeed she 'hid it well'!!!! And yep....you must believe it...she looks just like you.
Deletehuge frog growing them bigger in Texas ??
ReplyDeleteEverything's bigger in Texas...so 'they' say.
DeleteGood ole Jeremiah looks like he is happy to pose for you ~
ReplyDeleteI tried to photograph one the other day and he scooted off hopping mad ;)
...I think Mr. Jeremiah was too hot to move!!!
Deleteoh and I meant to say ~ I simply and totally adore that blog header !
ReplyDelete...thanks Willow
DeleteI loved the Thorn Birds. ♪ ♫...Sing it joy to the world. ♪ ♫.... Yep, I remember that song well but never understood the meaning of the lyrics though.
ReplyDelete...the theme song? I'm not sure.
DeleteDid he sing the frog song? Other wise he is just a mysterious mustachioed man.
ReplyDelete...better stay tuned then
DeleteGreat shot of nature's cute bull frog! Happy Weekend to you!
ReplyDeleteartmusedog and carol (A Creative Harbor)
...thanks Carol
DeleteGreat frog!
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
...ribbit!! That's frog talk for thanks Stewart!
DeleteI love the canna lily and the frog. I think mom watched Thorn Birds and Roots, but I'm not sure all the series were even showed here. I don't usually watch anything that continues from week to week.
ReplyDelete...thanks Gunilla
DeleteBeautiful collection! I love the lily decorating that fence!
ReplyDeleteThat frog is so cute and made me smile. I do remember those special TV mini-series. I LOVED The Thornbirds and read the novel many times. My mom and I watched it together before she passed away. Glad you got some rain!
ReplyDeleteHello Anni, I love your pretty lily and the color! The frog is cute! Thank you for linking up, enjoy your week!
ReplyDelete
