To begin this post, I'm gonna share something from my genealogy family treasures/collection. Rubbish by Roan's meme -Rubbish Tuesday- states: 'share anything old'. Old it is then; this week. These two figurines I share are the two first wood carvings Bud did as a child [way back in the 1940s]. A lumberjack & a gunfighter...

then, to continue...
Now, for the reasoning behind the post title...the 'weary arms, folded" on a shrimp boat. If you live in the seaport area, or have ever been nearby, you know about shrimp boats and the shrimpers hawking their catch of the day once back from trolling from an early morning outing. And with that, I'm sure you're aware of the birds that follow the boats. Pelicans, gulls, and other fish/seafood eaters. The day we chartered a boat, while waiting for the captain to prepare the boat we were going to board, a shrimp boat came in...along with it the brown pelicans and seagulls. If possible, make use of the Lightbox Filter to view them larger so you can spot unwanted fish... thrown off the boat for the 'takers'. Some have fish stuck in their throat pouches, while another is grabbing one yet to consume. Still others wait their turn at getting lucky:

1. What news story are you following right now? The Colorado Mudslides on the Western Slope...my sister lives near the area, and flooding on the front range of the same state where a 14 year old boy fell into the Poudre River yesterday...is missing. Scary. And the boy's uncle, who tried to save the nephew that fell...died at the hospital. [that is pronounced POO der River] I read the bylines of other online news sites some days, but not much. UPDATE AT THE TIME OF THIS POSTING ON TUESDAY MORNING: Both the uncle and boy perished. The 14 year old's body was found. And note: on one internet site the Mesa area of the massive mudslide says Collbran, Colorado is west of Grand Junction...it's NOT west...but east.
2. What's the last thing you wanted but didn't get? This may sound weird, but I was disappointed I didn't 'get' a new doctor I wanted. I was told the doctor wasn't taking new patients. I think with this Obamacare, a lot of people are getting this. Oh well, 100 years from now it'll make no difference.
3. May 28th is National Hamburger Day...when did you last have a hamburger? Other than your own kitchen or BBQ grill, where is your favorite place to go for a hamburger? And for all you non-meat eaters out there...when you're invited to a cookout what is the one side dish you hope is on the menu? About a month ago. And I LOVE 5 Guys' Burgers. [and their french fries]
4. How have your priorities changed over time? Work schedules. 'Nough said.
5. What's a favorite memory with your grandparents? By the time I can remember grandparents, I only had one living...my father's father. He lived to be 95. And the memory of him did not involve me...I remember how he would always bring my mother a box of chocolate covered cherries when he'd visit us. It always brought a smile to her face and she'd enjoy the candy. My father's mother died when I was still a toddler and my mother's parents died when I was 6...the only thing I remember about them was their HUGE farm and farmhouse.
6. On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being fantastic!), how good are you at multitasking? Share an example. I'm good at it, but at my age, I find no need to really do more jobs than one at a time for the most part. I can clean house, prepare a meal, and do laundry at the same time. Is that multi-tasking? I'd say 7?!! I could probably say 10 if I were working outside the home like I used to do and have kids at home...but again, retirement keeps me more at ease on getting anything done. [see #4]
7. How would you summarize your highs and lows for the month of May? It "May" seem like a boring answer, but I was extremely excited for a heavy rainfall this month!!! After 5 years of drought, a good rainstorm is a 'high'. The lows for the month...not ENOUGH rain yet. I don't want it to be flooding, but I would be happy to lift the "LOW" level of water around town to a new "HIGH".
8. Insert your own random thought here. Random Predictions for the Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico Hurricane season for 2014 were released this past week...After one of the quietest seasons last year, it is once again predicted to be lower than normal, seasonal, but estimated 'higher' possibilities than 2013.

Wonderful post.
ReplyDelete...thanks Denise
DeleteBeautiful post. Many years ago I lived in Jacksonville and loved going to the docks and get huge bags of shrimp and crab...happy memories!
ReplyDelete...it's a great experience to be sure.
DeleteI very much enjoyed reading this post, Anni. I think your shots of the pelicans are wonderful!
ReplyDelete...thanks!!!
DeleteThose birds are looking like they are getting a lot of free leftovers hanging out on the dock! LOL!
ReplyDeleteHave a happy week!
xo Catherine
...yep, greedy they are.
DeleteGreat photos of the Pelicans, how wonderful to have such amazing wildlife around you.
ReplyDelete...thanks Sarah
DeleteSo sorry to hear about the flooding and mudslides. Bosnia is dealing with those problems on a large scale right now. It's very scary stuff!
ReplyDelete...it's always tragic. Especially if there is lives lost.
DeleteBud was talented! My grandpa wasn't a wood carver, he was a whittler. He never made anything, just whittled a stick down to nothing, toss it asisde, and start another stick. I hope you get some good steady rainfall this year. I'm looking for a new Doc now and getting the same response. My current doctor still has a shiny face and pimples. He rushes in and rushes right back out and never listens to me when I'm trying to tell him something. He merely makes a quick concludsion and goes on to the next patient. Frustrating. Thanks so much for linking up!
ReplyDelete...thanks for hosting Roan
DeleteI love those wooden dolls. They are so unique!
ReplyDeleteThe pelicans photos are wonderful, too. I love them.
...thanks!!!
DeleteI think pelicans are such funny birds!
ReplyDeleteI like 'em. A lot.
DeleteI think pelicans are strange looking birds. I remember seeing them following a boat once, but I wasn't a camera taker then. Now, I'd use my cellphone! Love your pictures, though, and the hodgepodge answers. Multitasking? What's that? :-)
ReplyDelete...exactly, you and I are livin' right?!!!
DeleteNational Hamburger Day. I'm in!!!
ReplyDelete...me too. I'll join you. Add cheese for me please.
Deleteyipee on the lower number of hurricanes, this is the time of year i start to fret about them and that ramps up with each month... pelicans are my favorite bird and these are awesome shots of these wonderful fishing birds.
ReplyDeletei was blessed with a grandmother until i was 15 and my other grandmother until i was 26..my memory is Ganny sitting at the dining room table in her slip and red shoes with a cigarette in one hand and a bottle of coke in the other with one leg propped up to hold the cig arm... she did that at 2 pm every day, waiting to dress for work at 3 at the hospital..
...great memory of your grandmother!!
DeleteTangibles from the past...how lucky we are to have them...they are true 'time machines'...
ReplyDelete...and these are fragile to me...I try to take good care of them and handle them with care
DeleteLove those pelicans. And I always take those hurricane predictions with a grain of salt, particularly when they predict a "quiet" season, but I do hope it's true. And I hope your sister stays safe~
ReplyDeleteI haven't been able to contact her yet...I do know this time of year is a busy time with irrigation and such. She's probably outdoors when I call. Guess I'll just text her...and wait.
DeleteLove the photos of the shore birds ~ beautiful for OWT ~ Happy Week to you ~
ReplyDeleteartmusedog and carol (A Creative Harbor)
...thanks Carol
DeleteSuperb pelican shots! The brown pelican is our state bird. :)
ReplyDeleteSure hope the hurricane season is as calm as last year.
...me too on the hurricane predictions.
DeleteBud's carvings are quite good. Interesting how a person's talent shows up so early in life. The pelicans are awesome! I think they are the coolest looking birds.
ReplyDeleteIt's barbequed hamburgers for dinner tonight! We are having an early season heat wave (91 degrees today), and I can't stand the heat, so I'm getting out of the kitchen!
...thanks Karen. 91 degrees...in May? Ohhhhh, too hot too soon. Enjoy those hamburgers.
DeleteI don't think I've ever seen a pelican in 'person.' But I do remember the poem from Childcraft when I was a kid: 'The pelican, the pelican. His beak can hold more than his belly can.' (Aren't you glad it wasn't a long poem??) Great photos.
ReplyDeleteLOL....and I haven't heard of this poem in eons!!! Love your sense of humor too Judy.
Deletethe old carvings are so cute! love the pelicans!
ReplyDelete...thanks Ms. T!
DeleteHi There, Great photos of the water/birds.... I certainly enjoyed seeing the water birds when we were at the beach last week.
ReplyDeleteOne of these days, I may 'break my rule' and join that meme that I do like. That person can really come up with some interesting questions... Here are my thoughts today:
--Story I am following right now: About our Vets getting such poor care; Been going on much too long --and someone needs to FIX it... Getting it out from under Govt. control would help.. I can't think of much of anything our Govt. runs WELL.
--I was hoping to have a 'simple' Gallbladder surgery with no complications --but didn't... Typical of me!!!! IF there are complications or side-effects, I manage to get them... ha
--Ate a hamburger at Hardee's (love their big thick burgers) a couple of months ago (before the gallbladder came out) --and got sick as a dog..... Haven't had one since --but now that I have no gallbladder, I may try another one SOMEDAY.
--Try to always think of the glass as half full instead of half empty; Not sure I was so positive about things when I was younger!!!
--Never had any grandparents AT ALL; They were dead when I was born. Very sad --but I just have never had much family PERIOD.
--Used to be GREAT at it ---but don't even try these days; I just am more relaxed and try not to get stressed about things like I used to.
--WELL---Had some lows (changing vacation due to surgery, plus that infection after surgery) --but had some HIGHS too (re-scheduled trip to the beach --which was GREAT);
--Random Thought: why do the days still fly by so fast ---even though I'm retired and supposedly have more time on my hands???? Hmmmmmm....
Hugs,
Betsy
...join in Betsy!! Hodgepodge is my favorite!!!
DeleteGreat photos (as always), and I enjoyed reading your Hodgepodge. I had to give some thought (more than usual) to a few of the questions this week. Catch mine tomorrow!
ReplyDelete...looking forward to your post.
DeleteSomething about Pelicans I am just fascinated with!!
ReplyDelete...they're such a calm species, and enjoyable to watch.
DeleteWell from your extensive, varied and highly interesting post it's clear you are a multi-tasker Anni. Good to see those pelicans filling up while they can
ReplyDelete...thanks Phil
DeleteThose are such delightful images, they all made me smile, happy week to you~
ReplyDelete...thanks Mary. Happy week to you too.
DeleteThose are pretty cool carvings in the first picture. That must have been fun watching all those pelicans.
ReplyDelete...oh they are fun to watch, I love going down there just to do that very thing...watching the Pelicans. Thanks Ann
DeleteYour pictures of the pelicans are really spectacular!! I can't pick a favorite. And the carvings are very good; they would sell in a store. Not many things are more important tan a good doctor, it it not a trivial issue! They hold your life in their hands.
ReplyDelete...re: the doctors you couldn't have said it better Ginny.
DeleteAwesome shots of the pelicans. They're interesting birds.
ReplyDelete...indeed, they are.
DeleteLove those food pouches!! Boom, Bobbi and Gary.
ReplyDelete...thanks Gary.
DeleteBud did good on those carvings - especially at a young age!
ReplyDeleteI love your pelican pictures.
I thought so too, he was only about 7 or 8 when he did these.
DeleteI do love your bird photos too. I'm glad you got some rain in May. Maybe I can send you more of mine, lol. Truthfully we do get quite a lot of rain. Maybe we have had more than our share of it this year. I like rain because it brings relief to parched land, keeps our water levels up and keeps everything nice and green as well as provides for birds and animals. Too much rain or too little can be a problem. x
ReplyDeleteI'll take all the rain you can send our way!!
DeleteGreat post, love those Pelicans and your photos.
ReplyDelete...thanks Karen
DeleteGreat post, Anni! Mudslides anywhere are scary.. Love the pelicans, another one of my favorite birds. Have a happy week!
ReplyDeleteYou and I have so many 'favorites'...we are kindred spirits when it comes to watching birds.
DeleteI have some pictures of shrimp boats with the birds from when we stayed at Port A .. some of my favorite old pics and favorite memories too.
ReplyDeletePort A is a great place to go...but to see a lot of shrimpers, must come to the Marina in town.
DeleteI've seen the birds following the boats and I liked that. My high for this month has been the wonderful rain. My low was the sudden death of my brother-in-law. Retired Lt. from the San Antonio police dept.
ReplyDeleteWe're both Texans and rain these days IS a 'high'. Sorry 'bout your BIL.
DeleteHey stranger - how are you? I love your pictures there. Wish I lived more by the water and see all those sites. I have not heard of the Colorado mud slides. I hope your sister is okay. My priorities have changed over the years too. I miss my grandparents! Hope you are doing okay!
ReplyDelete...you were lucky to have known your grandparents. It's nice to see you visit with me.
DeleteHI Anni Those shots you tookof the Pelicans are wonderful
ReplyDeleteA good rain after a drought is definitely a high!
ReplyDelete...for me it is!!
DeleteI too hope you keep getting rains. Drought is a terrible thing. I never read your Hodgepodge answers until Wednesday morning because I don't want them to influence my own. So I'm leaving two comments on this post. Yesterday and today. :-) Hope it's a great day for you.
ReplyDeleteno problem....I do most of my memes all wrapped up in one day to save me time since I'm not online much these days.
DeleteSo sad about the people that died in the mudslide. It's pretty amazing that there weren't more. I'm like you with the grandparent question; I barely knew my maternal g'mother. I hope people who knew/know theirs realize how fortunate they are!
ReplyDelete...they called off the search 'cause of weather in the area.
DeleteGood morning Anni!!
ReplyDeleteThis has truly been a year of so many sad Mother Nature events. I cannot imagine seeing a wall of mud heading my way. Prayers for all
I agree about multitasking. I did that enough when I was an assistant to 5 professors. All were procrastinators and always thought their work was priority.
Hugs Cecilia
...yep, we had our multi-tasking days...now it's time for US and nothing more. 'bout time I say.
DeleteGood Morning and thank you for your kind wishes re our move.
ReplyDeleteI have never eaten at 5 Guys and I must try it now!
I enjoyed your gorgeous, clear photos today.
...you've been missed. I'm glad you're back to blogging again.
DeleteSo sad about the uncle and nephew who perished. What an awful way to die.
ReplyDeleteI know...it's heartbreaking.
DeleteIve not had five Guys.
ReplyDeleteWe loved the rain here.
Thanks for visiting
...enjoy the rain you're getting...we all need it desperately in TX.
DeleteWe have a Five Guys near where I live. I have to split a burger it's way too much! It's good but they give you overly huge portions. Thanks for your condolence about my cat. :)
ReplyDeleteIn all honesty, I probably should split mine in half...they ARE large, and filling.
DeleteI would love to visit your part of the country and experience this for myself..Lovely post...some nature and something about you.. Michelle from Nature Notes..
ReplyDelete...thank YOU Michelle.
DeleteI only had my mother's parents as my father's died before I was born.
ReplyDelete...at least you had good memories I imagine.
DeleteI think pelicans are fascinating creatures, very prehistoric looking. I can get pretty excited about weather too : ) Also-I did not know that about the Dr Pepper (no period). I learned something in the HP today!
ReplyDelete...it was changed way back when I was a young'un. No period. And they kept it that way...dunno why.
DeleteI haven't tried 5 Guys, but I've noticed several people chose them as their favorite burger place!
ReplyDeleteYou asked why nobody wanted to live in the house on the family farm. That's a great question! Two different families are living in mobile homes, but neither are interested in the house. Go figure!
...that's odd!
DeleteLooks like they really gorge themselves when given the opportunity.
ReplyDelete...yep.
DeleteNot being able to get into your choice doctor is annoying. I've had that happen, but I'd like to think that perhaps it's because people who haven't been able to get health insurance now have it and can afford to go to a doctor. And that is a good thing! I went without for 2+ years and prayed I wouldn't get sick or hurt and my Mom had to pay for me to get an annual check up and I had to apply for a discount service to get labwork done. Embarrassing.
ReplyDeleteI like 5 Guys too. Luckily our closest one is almost 2 hours away. we sometimes go there for dinner when we're coming home from visiting my parents, though it's been awhile. I probably shouldn't eat there though, with the trouble I've been having with gallbladder flare ups.
...with 5 Guys, I think I'd tolerate a bit of pain afterwards, as long as it wouldn't last for days.
DeleteJust got back from the beach....loved the pelican pictures. I love 5 guys too.
ReplyDeleteoh beach excursion...fun!!!
DeleteYour pelican shots are simply awesome, Anni.
ReplyDelete...thanks Veronica
