Five Randoms

This is supposed to be random, right? Things that pop into my head...so, of course, I'm sure y'all know that Corpus Christi is Latin...for Body of Christ. But did you know that before naming the city Corpus Christi, it was known as Kinney's Rancho [ranch]? A trading post established by Mr. Kinney in 1829. In 1839 Corpus Christi was incorporated. The Port of Corpus Christi currently is the sixth largest U.S. port and deepest inshore port on the Gulf of Mexico. Today it's ranked #47 largest port in the world. Kinney was supposedly shot and killed in Matamoras, Old Mexico [just south -connecting to, and only divided by the Rio Grande River is the USA border town of Brownsville]...Kinney, the founder of Corpus Christi, is supposedly buried in an unmarked grave in Matamoras.

While walking the botanical gardens pathways beyond the more flowery paths, out in the open fields, we came upon a windmill! How I love to be hear them when a soft wind makes the blades spin and the creaking of the metal sings a melancholic song of sorrow; loneliness, reminding me of my youthful days on my grandparents' farm. That's how I feel. I walked to the 'back side' also -- so I could get the windmill in silhouette.

3] Speaking of border towns, as much as I would like to drive down to Brownsville, this month, we're gonna stay home and do yard work, instead, if the weather improves; staying off the beaches and letting the Spring Breaker mobs have it all!! Maybe in April we'll go?!!
4] In the past week, our pomegranate tree went from dormancy to full leafy canopy!! Now, if the birds don't become attracted to the beautiful blossoms in a month or so, perhaps this year we'll have fruit?!!
5] My favorite rose is Scarlet Knight! Budding is nearly black as it opens to a rich, velvety scarlet...
_ _ _
There are four sleeping birds - three quite prominent - can you spot the fourth one?
[two black-necked stilts, one roseate spoonbill, and one smaller sandpiper I believe]
_ _ _
An eclectic array of our trekking around the Botanical Gardens open fields. From ponds, fountains, annual - perennials blossoms, wildflowers, yard art, trumpet flowers, agave in desert landscaping By the way, those flamingos surrounding the decking are metal yard art. In due time this covered decking area is landscaped with plumeria plants/trees of all colors. It's really a beautiful sight in the summer, but too early in the season right now for them to be outdoors...

No wonder that is your favorite rose, really gorgeous.
ReplyDelete...and its fragrance is comparable to its beauty!!
DeleteThings are really perking up in your area -- so jealous! Love that rose as well. What a luscious color!
ReplyDelete...yes, and today's morning temp is in the 50s. Clear skies...is it gonna be warmer? I hope so!!!!!
DeleteI spotted the wee grey duck; must be a shy little thing! Pomegranates?!? Wish we could grow them here!
ReplyDelete...when I took the photo, I did not realize there was a fourth bird!!! Only when I uploaded it to the computer off the camera did I see it.
DeleteGreat post! Yes, spotted that little cutie right away too! Oh my, that is a stunning rose, I just love roses! Did not know that about Corpus Christi, thanks for sharing, love to learn new things. What a gorgeous flower collage!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day!
Nancy
I love roses too. I dug out all mine in the yard last year because they were so sickly from the drought the past several years. Maybe, just maybe now that we're getting a bit of rain, I'll replace them.
DeleteI saw the fourth bird when I inspected the picture. Beautiful shot! And your flower pictures are making me look forward to the riot of colors that will be coming up soon around here. :-)
ReplyDelete"riot of colors"...I like that reference DJ
Deletecute snoozing trio. :)
ReplyDelete...there are four! You missed one. ;-)
DeleteWhat a lovely post. That rose is something else!
ReplyDeleteI do love that rose too Mildred.
Deletelove Scarlet Knight, the flower and the name and the snoozers are so pretty..
ReplyDelete...thanks Sandra. Hey? Enjoy your hiatus.
DeleteBeautiful photos, and I admire all your flower shots..So pretty to see!
ReplyDelete...thanks. Glad to know you enjoyed the flowers today.
DeleteNeat to catch all the birds napping at the same time and I did spot the fourth.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was cool and comical at the same time. Didn't see the 4th one 'til I uploaded it.
DeleteI admire your post.
ReplyDelete...thanks Abraham
Deletenot leaving just rethinking...
ReplyDelete...oh that's good to know then...
DeleteI see all 4 birds. :) I really enjoyed your pictures today. The windmill pictures are great!
ReplyDeleteI love the nostalgia when I see a windmill like that. Thanks Mari
DeleteI love the synchronized sleeping birds and yes, I see the fourth one. Very cool, Anni!
ReplyDeletecharlotte
...thanks Charlotte, I'm happy to know you enjoyed it.
DeleteWonderful images as usual. I like the pink flamingos, they go well with the rest of the scenery. The windmills are special to me too, since I grew up in a region where they used wind for electricity, so I saw their modern counterparts often.
ReplyDeleteMersad
Mersad Donko Photography
Yes, we have the 'modern' wind generators here also. Nothing compares to those, but the 'old style' that brings water to the surface is something I remember as a child.
DeleteAs always, gorgeous pictures! I loved the facts about Corpus Christi, and I think you are very wise to give a wide berth to anything related to the beaches until April!
ReplyDeleteYep, me thinks that way too. Give the kids their fun and I'll have mine...later next month. LOL
DeleteYour post is randomly beautiful!!! We love the mix today and especially the synchronized sleeping. I'm pretty good at that too.
ReplyDeleteHugs madi and mom
...Madi? or Mom? Synchronized snoozing is a given with Madi, I'm sure. LOL
DeleteLoved the info on the city of Corpus Christi and the images of the windmills. (These still feature prominently on many South African farms) I noticed the little sandpiper behind the pink flamingo. Great shot of snoozing birds. Greetings, Jo
ReplyDelete...you did, and you actually ID'd it!! Impressive Jo. [altho the pink bird isn't a flamingo.]
DeleteThe rose is gorgeous--I can see why it's your favorite. Love the synchronized shot. So awesome!! I have a post in draft called "Symmetry" which is similar, but only three photos in it so far. I enjoyed a tennis tournament I played in Corpus in the 90s. Great place.
ReplyDelete...thing is, did you win the tournament?!!!
DeleteI get nostalgic over windmills, too. I used to live in Amish country in PA. Thanks for the colorful birds and flowers - still looking at white here. I like the 4 birds snoozing!
ReplyDeleteI always have and probably always will admire the Amish!!! They are an impressive people!!
DeleteYep, me too...I'm good at snoozing. Probably too good.
Oh, I wish I could see a live flamingo here! No such luck. And there is one pomegranate tree within my reach and its blooms and buds are the most beautiful redddish-orangeyish of colors, but I have never seen them produce a pomegranate.
ReplyDelete....maybe the pollination from birds eating [and bees maybe] helps. We don't have many, but I blame it on the blossoms falling off too quickly. I love pomegranates. Oh, and the 'live' snoozer, the pink bird isn't a flamingo...it's a Roseate Spoonbill. Dunno if you're talking about the metal yard art or the real bird.
DeleteA great SWF-post, so many details to study closer!
ReplyDelete...thanks Hans.
DeleteSuch a fascinating post. The windmill attracted me. It can be quite mesmerising and soothing to watch the spinning blades. And chuckled at the synchronised snoozing image. That's a winner.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed the synchronized snoozers Gemma.
DeleteYes, I see the fourth bird!! I love your photos and the interesting information!!
ReplyDelete...I'm always happy to read how you enjoy my posts Terri.
Deletesynchronized snoozing sounds like my kind of event...lol I'm pretty sure I spotted the 4th snoozer.
ReplyDeleteLOL...sometimes, for me too Ann.
DeleteYou are smart to stay away from the coast during Spring Break... Hopefully, you can enjoy it in April...
ReplyDeleteGreat group of photos. I do see that 4th little bird.
I love windmills also... There's no 'farm girl' in me--but windmills are just so fascinating.
That rose is gorgeous. We have a similar one --almost a red/black --named Deep Secret.
Hugs,
Betsy
I hope to go on a short trip to Brownsville in April...for birding of course. Spring Migration should be in 'full swing' then.
DeleteAnni, I love the windmills! And the snoozing shot is cute, great capture. The flowers are all lovely. Great post, have a happy weekend!
ReplyDelete...thanks, have a happy weekend yourself Eileen.
DeleteTook me a minute to find the snoozing shorebird, but I saw him camoflaged between this more flamboyant snooze buddies. Nice picture. We don't go to the beach at spring break either (it's a big thing here in Ft Myers too.) Once when we were staying in Port A a fellow RVer came over to "warn" us not to go t the beach . He said it was spring break and we wouldn't want to go because "you wouldn't believe all those half- naked girls there.... (and then he couldn't stop talking about them). Bill said he guessed the guy wanted to keep all the fun to himself ;>)
ReplyDelete....hehehehehe, men!!! But what you shared here made me laugh heartily.
DeleteLove those windmills!
ReplyDelete...glad to know you enjoyed the windmills!!
DeleteSo interesting and lovely pictures. Love the crock vase and the yellow flowers.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting Timeless Treasures with a nice comment.
Audrey Z.
...that is one of my favorite areas of the gardens too. The crock pot is a fountain and gurgles ever so gently...peaceful.
Deletelove the pics and esp the windmills thanks for sharing
ReplyDelete...it's always nice to have your positive feedback through your commenting!!!
DeleteHi there - last replies were from Scottsdale, AZ - I was at a conference. Managed to get out and about - so pictures to follows.
ReplyDeleteCheers - Stewart M - Melbourne
...can't wait Stewart...it'll be like 'old home week' for me.
DeleteA pomegranate bush that either attracts tons of birds or has lots of fruit.? Sounds to me like you win either way. ;))
ReplyDeleteI guess you're correct...I never thought of it that way 'til you mentioned it.
DeleteI just love images of windmills.
ReplyDelete...that makes me happy Sarah.
DeleteOh what a beautiful garden and it would be so nice to stand there and listen to that windmill. I can imagine how much you would miss the farm of your Grandparents. I can never imagine leaving our farm. Hug B
ReplyDelete...there is just a special quality of life, living on a farm. A LOT of physical labor and heartache with loss of income sometimes when things fall short and prices rise...but still!! I agree, a farming life is good.
DeleteDearest Anni;
ReplyDeleteOh My, I smiled with the "synchronized sneezing"; what a fun shot♡♡♡
I've never seen windmills, wish I could hear them making soft sounds.
Sending you Lots of Love and Hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*
...and I love the fact that you had a good laugh at the snoozers Miyako.
DeleteLove and hugs right back at you in Japan dear one.
synchronized snoozing ... what a fun shot! I love windmills -- the older the better. I do like botanical gardens -- each so different and full of ideas. I always enjoy hearing how a place got its name -- history is good! Happy Friday!
ReplyDelete...it was fun for me to spot those snoozers. And glad y'all like the history tidbit. ;-)
DeleteAs a fellow texan, I really had to laugh when I heard that Corpus Christi was once called Kinneys Rancho.... Definitely news to me. Love your shot of the SYNCHRONIZED SNOOZERS. all 4 of them. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDelete...I'm here to inform. rofl
DeleteGlad you enjoyed the snoozers Jeanne.
I love windmills, although I don't see too many of them anymore.
ReplyDeleteThreads of Thin Rain
...me too. Even tho the wind generators are eerie and huge, I still like them too.
DeleteGorgeous photos! I can't wait to see flowers like that in real life here in my own yard. So cool that you have a pomegranate tree in your yard.
ReplyDelete...by the time most of the north gets Spring flowers we'll be in the deep inferno and flowers'll be burnin' up. Yes, I like to have the pomegranate tree too. :-)
DeleteLOVE the windmills ... but the beauty of those blooms is what sent my heart spinning!
ReplyDelete;-}
I have to admit, Spring is a favorite season here.
DeleteCut synchronized snoozing Anni! I love old windmills, and told Hubbers I want one in the yard. He then reminded me that we live in the suburbs.
ReplyDeleteI've seen the 1/2 sized windmills in suburb yards. And they're always in amongst flower gardens...doesn't look all that shabby either.
Deletelove the synchronized snoozing… I have a cold and my dog and I have been doing a lot of that too:-)
ReplyDelete...get well soon Laura.
DeleteThe windmill caught my attention. I have never seen such a huge windmill, only the hand held ones :) It takes quite a while for me to locate the 4th bird, my eyesight is deteriorating as I grow old.
ReplyDelete...your eyesight is not what it used to be also? Me too.
DeleteI spotted the fourth one....he kind of blended into the water since he was wearing camo for water! lol Love the flamingo! And those flowers are to die for! I used to have a green thumb and could grow them to look like that, but my green thumb has turned brown.....I guess because I'm in the winter of my life? Who knew?
ReplyDelete...no, not winter of life...we're just enjoying everyone else 's flowers. Nuttin' wrong with that.
DeleteWow! You have so many colorful blooms already! Flamingos are fascinating, aren't they, standing on one leg?! My favorite flowers are the purple varieties :)
ReplyDelete...you and me both Sharon...purple!!!
DeleteA really interesting post Anni, love the snoozing birds, and I love to walk round Botanicle gardens, you got some nice shots in there.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Gordon.
...thanks Gordon.
DeleteYou've hooked me on scarlet night and the neon one leggers
ReplyDelete...Sandy, I can't find your blog that has recent posts...the two from Blogger profile have posted dated the past September!
DeleteI found the 4th snoozer but had to enlarge the picture. Too funny ! :)
ReplyDelete...good for you...high 5
DeleteSpring looks like it's moving on in down at your place. Lovely shots of the garden- I love all those bright colorful flowers that just scream spring! I like the snoozing birds too- especially the flamingos, which are birds I will probably never see.
ReplyDelete...the pink 'snoozer' isn't a flamingo...it's a roseate spoonbill. And yes, spring is always loaded with color...especially appreciated after such a long winter this year.
DeleteThough it's random, very interesting to read. Enjoyed your post...
ReplyDeleteIt happened to visit your blog today, you got excellent pages. Added in the list to follow.
Invite you to my blog to share your comments and follow my page...
...thanks John. I did go pay you a visit. Thanks for the invite.
DeleteLove that Scarlet Night . . . refreshing to see all your colors. I think I found #4!
ReplyDeleteWay to go...I didn't even see #4 bird 'til I uploaded it from the camera.
DeleteDouble checked back . . . I knew it was Scarlet KNIGHT . . . I liked!
ReplyDeletescarlet night or knight...it's still pretty. Makes me think "a rose by any other name...etc. etc."
DeleteThat Scarlet Knight is beautiful. Would love to see it in full bloom. Had to chuckle about the synchronized snoozing.
ReplyDeleteLOL...but it was a 'fun' picture, right?
DeleteHI Anni yes I saw the fourth wader and loved that you caught them all napping! Love the Rose, it will be lovely to see it in full bloom. Glad you weather is improving.
ReplyDelete...oh, but it's gloomy again today. Humbug.
Deletehättest du nicht von 4 Vögeln gesagt Anni..den kleinen Vogel hätte ich übersehen..
ReplyDeleteLG zum Wochenende vom katerchen
...that 4th bird is very easy to overlook!!!
DeleteYou have a pomegranate tree? How cool is that! I love pomegranates. We had a windmill on our farm where I lived as a little girl. I still like them. :)
ReplyDeletexo Catherine

ReplyDelete...it doesn't FEEL like Spring here today. ;-(
DeleteAh! I have not heard a windmill in YEARS!!! Now I wish to hear one more than anything! HOW could I have forgotten that wonderful sound! Great photos! As usual........
ReplyDelete...glad you enjoyed it Linda.
DeleteWhat a delightful post, Annie!! love the windmill , the knight rose, the birds....!! spent last week in bed with a bad cold, I am ready for spring now.

ReplyDeleteI love all the colourful blooms.
Keep "hootin"!
Karen
...thanks Karen, and thanks for hosting.
DeleteHi Anni,
ReplyDeleteLove the photo of the ''Synchronized Snoozing'' birds and yes, I spotted the fourth one, second from the left, but I must say it is camouflaged rather well! Your flowers are all very pretty and the windmills, full of whimsy. Hope the birds leave your pomegranate tree in peace; its fruit is sweet and refreshing!
Thanks for sharing!
Poppy
I just know the birds will have a feast!
Deletegreat album!
ReplyDeleteand fun walk down memory lane...
hapPy weekending!
thank you!
DeleteNice colorful tours! Love to see flowers of any kind. The synchronized birds made me laugh. The story about Corpus Christi was interesting!
ReplyDelete...it always makes me happy to know you enjoyed my post Liz.
DeleteHootin Anni! Yikes, it's been ages since I've crossed paths with you. How are you. Love all your photos. I found you at Sunlit Sunday.
ReplyDeleteHi Ellen...nice to see you again!!!
DeleteGreat photos. Love the birds - 3 extroverts showing off their stuff and one quiet introvert looking a little shy.
ReplyDelete...thanks Lorrie
DeleteSome of my favourites, roses, sleeping and windmills... I spotted the little guy, not right off though
ReplyDelete...glad you enjoyed your favorites at Hootin' Anni's Cindy!!
DeleteHa, that fourth bird had me searching around! Great camouflage :) Weekends were made for synchronized snoozing and these guys could snooze for Texas, couldn't they. How wonderful to have a pomegranate tree. I have friends in Hawaii who can walk into their back yard and pick avocados, papayas and lemons right off their trees. I guess I could be jealous until I remember they envy my apples and plums...lol. Isn't that the way it always is? Hope your week is a lovely one Anni. :)
ReplyDelete...thanks Veronica
DeleteThe fourth little guy is hiding among his showier friends, all with heads tucked under their wings. Cute capture.
ReplyDelete,,,the little snoozer, I didn't see 'til I got it up on the computer. lol
DeleteAnni, I love windmills. We are looking into installing one on our farm. It's quite expensive. I love the way they look and the sound they make. We have a lot of wind at our farm, so I think a windmill will serve us well.
ReplyDelete...in my opinion, if doling out the initial cost will save money in the long run...it's WELL worth the investment.
DeleteGreat shots! That rose is beautiful. I love windmills! It was really exciting for me to have one on my farm. It might not work, but I still love it!
ReplyDelete...oh, I like 'em too!!!! There is just something about windmills of this kind that brings out the nostalgic feelings in me.
DeleteLove those sleeping birds, Anni! Yep, I see the 4th bird only after I zoomed in!
ReplyDelete...it definitely takes an enlargement to find it.
Delete
