PHOTO HUNT: BULKY---[bulky plumage]

I'm going to use the same photo for Photo Hunt AND Camera Critter this week. Bulky, of course, is something that is large size for its own weight....being a sea gull. This photo to the left was taken at Whitecap Beach on Padre Island. They look larger than their own weight. When you carry one in your hand they seem almost weightless, yet look rather large just glancing at them. This particular species is the "Laughing Gull". To identify the laughing gull you'd notice the size [medium to large] the back/wings are slate gray with the breast and underbelly being white with wingtips black. Now the head....during breeding season it's all black...otherwise gray/black flecked. The Juvenile is a dusky brown overall. Head gray brown, paler on forehead and chin. First winter plumage: Back gray, but wings brown. After their first summer do they become marked as seen in the photo. They are quite abundant along the Gulf of Mexico among other different species. Their call is quite like 'laughing and giggling', hence their name...

  1. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! I love the temperature incator Have a great weekend and I hope those balls stay attached! Happy weekend

  2. Jams It's so cold here this morning our city politicians are keeping their hands in their OWN pockets!!

  3. It'd so cold here . . .
a streaker froze in mid-streak! The town council just stuck a plaque on him and pretended he was a Greek statue until spring.

  4. i like the culling sound very much. thank you for sharing.

  5. It's so cold . . .
a flasher rushed up to poor Mrs. Flannigan - and described himself!

    ....okay, I'll quit.

  6. I am sitting here melting trying to imagine your brass monkeys! LOL! Its so hot down here, and apparently we are in for a few days of it yet! Woh is me! I plan to pack the ice pack and take the kids to the beach to see it out tomorrow! Today was just too much for us all!

  7. Well THAT was frustrating! I was just ready to post a rather lengthy comment when Mozilla crashed. Hopefully it will cooperate and let me try again. Let's see ... where was I? Oh yez ... I do love your sense of humor and am sorry it's so cold where you live. I heard that parts of Texas are colder than the North Pole this year. Somehow it's hard to focus on 'global warming' looking at wintry scenes across the nation. Fortunately the ocean is a great stabilizing force so it's fairly mild where I live.

I got carried away while sharing 'tamale-making' at Sacred Ruminations yesterday afternoon and evening ... so this morning I'm hoping to catch up on blog visits before the day actually begins ... just a couple of blessings of this retired life. Wishing you a wonderful weekend ;-)
    Hugs and blessings,

  8. The Laughing Gull is very cute, but he does look a tad bulky!

  9. happy weekend dear anni, your visit is always a blessing ...thank you so much dear!

  10. Nice take on bulky..and yes, it is cold even here in Florida.

  11. Hahahaha too cold it freezes ^_^ Thanks for sharing!

  12. Do you know the derivation of the saying? The monkey was metal frame that held cannon balls. When it got cold enough the frame would shrink so much the balls rolled off. Since I've known that, the saying has made me shiver all the more.

  13. it's a beautiful bulk indeed. thanks for the visit and warm hugs from the equator. it's raining cats and dogs here...still warm tho. :)

  14. It sure looked like my shape now. LOL! Nice brass monkey.. haha!

  15. No that is funny.... My grandmother used to say that is was colder than Witches tits in a brass bra! ahahhah Now where in the world did that come from! Warming up here today to a balmy 20 degrees..... SWEET!

  16. interesting information about the laughing gull. You capture it quite well too. happy weekend! My PH is up too.

  17. Anonymous1/09/2010

Is that anything like being hotter than a witches tit in a brass bra? LOL. Too funny. Poor monkey. Loved the photo my friend. Bulky indeed. Have a great day :) Oh and by the way, yes I knew I had paint I just didn't know I could do that kinda thing with that program either...the things we learn :)

  18. Sound effects even! That made me smile this nippy morning.

  19. I like your new template. The header is very pretty; did you do that???

Cold and hot are relative. ;) Here in NY, it was 18 degrees last night, and some were wearing shorts at the store. lol. What I find unbelievable is hot you guys tolerate that vicious HEAT!! I'd melt once the red hit 85!!

I goofed for Photo Hunters this week, and did "12" instead of "Bulky." :S Oops. But I decided to leave it up because it's appropriate for this week... and because I didn't want to spend an hour doing a different post! I hope you can visit.

    Have a blessed New Year!
    Mrs. Mecomber

  20. That laughing gull doesn't look like it's into laughing all that much!!! ;b

  21. P.S. Re cold: One winter when I was in Wisconsin, it actually went down to -90 Fahrenheit with wind chill!!!!!!!!!!

  22. He is quite the bulky fellow, even more so hunched down a little

    Happy weekend Anni

  23. That is really cute, nice one for the theme :-)

  24. O.K. That was really funny!!! Do you have sound effects for the monkey before and after?

  25. Whaoh! How does the brass monkey work? Does a spring suck them up or something?

  26. Just loved the sound effects!!! I've heard them so many times and always enjoy them.

  27. Stay warm my sweet friend, love you.

  28. Lovely bird Anni!

Please check out the security Kitty

  29. Ani -- sorry your're freezing your...well freezing! Nice capture of the Laughing Gull. We remember them well from our time spent in Port A.
One time I called my mother (in the Northwest) from my chair on the beach and she thought I was hanging out in a noisy bar b/c of all the laughter and shouts in the background. Innocent I was I tell you -- in the company of nobody but the laughing gulls!

  30. We're experiencing the same kind of cold. I'm starting to think that I'll never be warm again!

  31. Thank you for visiting mine. Cool entry....

  32. This morning when Honey Bear was checking the weather in various places he travels to, I had him check Corpus Christi. You're having unusual weather there, too. Do you even have a heater?
    Mama Bear

  33. Oh my.. Those brass monkeys are TOO-ooo FUNNY!!! Glad to see the cold hasn't robbed you of your sense of humor!! (0; Thanks for the laughs Anni!.. Hope you're keeping warm, and enjoying your weekend!! ~tina

  34. Anni,

I had never seen a laughing gull until I started reading your blog. Interesting photo.

  35. It's that cold here too, I need no brass monkeys to

    Happy New Year! :)

  38. uh huh, yep, it's cold!

  39. Heehee, love the brass monkeys...with and without!

What a fat seagull..he looks more like a smug penguin.

  40. brrrrrrrr. i sympathy, our weathers been cloudy, overcast and cool for the last 2 days...

  41. Looks like the bird has bulked itself up, fluffed out it's feathers to stay warm, ;-)

  42. I just feel on holidays in England when I close my eyes and hear the seagulls ! It doesn't bother my cats, they don't even open an eye !
Here it's freezing cold too and a wind !!! awful. Just a weather not to put one foot out !

  43. 18 F I have to recalculate that to Celsius , -7 here is -15.

Thank you for telling me, MB
