Next week "free"
Great Plains in Winter
Blue snow in the moonlight,
Set back from the road, a house
with a single lamplit window.
The whole world holds its breath.

This is my HEAVY for the week. The photo was taken on February 9th, 1949. The Day I Was Born. The county snowplows cleared the country roads so mom could get to the hospital to deliver. No, really that is true....my family was blessed with good country folk ready to lend a helping hand, and the county officials kept the snow drifts off the country roads into town for her!! In the photo [foreground], two of my uncles and the one with the shovel is my dad who left the hospital after I was born, to help clear the snow in the yard/walkways, off roof-tops and around the barns, etc.; with the help of many neighbors. Heavy snowfall, heavy scooping, but that morning, then - not so heavy mom! LOL
[my dad's height was 5'10" ...]
It's reported online here that before the blizzard of 1948 - 1949 ended, parts of my home state received over 100 inches of snow and drifts as high as 30 feet.

Oh, and to continue with the 'heavy theme' before the day's over, I will be a bit more HEAVY than when I woke up on my birthday too! I intend to 'throw caution to the wind' and celebrate with everything I enjoy. Fried Jumbo Gulf Shrimp, with tons of tartar sauce, and no doubt the fatty greasy french fried potatoes and all the other stuff that I spy on the menu. Then, maybe a movie...with popcorn --heavy on the butter!! The 9th is my birthday. The last year of the 50's too, so something a bit special pro'ly. Is 59 significant? Well, in my book it is. I'm not only OVER the HILL, but on a slippery road down hill now! But, truthfully, I'll enjoy the scenery every inch of the way.
The first thing I thought of with the week's theme was a song by the Hollies [1969] :::singing::: "He ain't heavy, he's my brother."
The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where
Who knows where
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another
It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on the way to there
Why not share
And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy he's my brother
He's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

The expression was first published:
- In 1924, the first editor of Kiwanis Magazine, Roe Fulkerson, published a column carrying the title "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother". Dated September 1924, the article speaks of Fulkerson's inspiring encounter with "a spindly and physically weak lad" carrying a baby and "staggering towards a neighboring park". " 'Pretty big load for such a small kid' I said as I met him. 'Why, mister,' he smiled, 'He ain't heavy; he's my brother.' "
Happy birthday-tomorrow!! That was a lovely photo and a lovely story to go along with it. It's a good thing all the neighbors helped out! HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, Annie! I am doing some early PhotoHunt visiting. I figure those who were early last week will likely be early again.
ReplyDeleteYou have an awesome heavy snow storya nd picture. My heavy picture is also snow. Although it is springlike temperatures here in our valley today, it has been windy. The mountains, though! In the mountains, all the major passes are closed because of heavy snow and avalanche conditions. We could not go play in the snow today--because of all the snow!
That is so cool (pun intended)! Happiest birthday to you
ReplyDeleteGood Evening Anni,
ReplyDelete"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR ANNI, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU"!!!! And many, many more. I enjoyed reading about your birth and seeing the picture. "THANK YOU" for sharing that with us. Can I come eat with you? LOL. I Love me some shrimp. I remember the song, "He Ain't Heavy". I used to listen to that over and over. That was very interesting about the song at the end of your post. My friend, your only as old as you want to feel. LOL. That's what I've been told anyway. Some days I feel like a young chick, and the other days I feel like an old mother hen. LOL. I do hope you have a great day today and make the best of it. Take care my friend and have a great evening/day. May God Bless You and Yours.
Love ya bunches and bunches of Birthday hugs to ya,
Karen H.
Haaaaaaappy Birthday Anni! I trust you will NOT be getting ANY big snows this weekend! Mathew was born inbetween 2 snow storms such as these -- Poor Dennis went home from the hospital (fighting the snow the whole way) and had to shovel out the driveway in order to park. He went in and took a shower and a 3 hour nap, and had PROMISED to bring Amanda back to the hospital with him. When he woke up another 14 inches of snow had fallen! (in FOUR hours!!!) It was CRAZY! He had to shovel out again! The poor thing DID it though -- he really wanted to get back to Mathew and I at the hospital! LOL!
ReplyDeleteSure hope you enjoy your day! (and all those good eats!)
Happy Birthday Dear Anni!!! I hope your day will be wonderful! I sure enjoyed reading about when you were born! That was some snow! Enjoy your great food tomorrow!

Happy Birthday Anni! As one who has been there, done that, 59 is a good year. enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday dear one, wishing you a very wonderful day filled with happy moments.
ReplyDeleteHappy Hootin' Birthday, Anni! That's a great story about the day you were born. On my birthday, the county fair was going on and they posted a picture of every baby born during the fair on a board at the fair. Go for it! Enjoy your birthday.
ReplyDeleteAnni,
ReplyDeleteWe have more in common than we might have first thought. I guessed 1949 and I was right. You are exactly 8 months and 3 days older than I am. Do you know what time you were born? I was born in the morning around 9am.
I believe that the county kept the road clear for your Mom to get to the hospital. They did the same for my Mom those many years ago. She went to town when the roads were cleared on Monday morning and I was born on Wednesday morning. She was in labor over 30 hours.
I wish you a wonderful Happy Birthday and many more. Yes, we are on the slippery slope but will enjoy it all the way. LOL
Love that song, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother."
After you are done celebrating, please drop by my blog and enter my Easter giveaway. I'm giving away CARDS.
Love and blessings,

That's all the better I can sing, Anni. I see you posting comments all the time on Merle's blog but never have visited yours. It is a nice blog.
More than that, though, I'm from Texas also, Montgomery, northwest of Conroe and north of Houston.
We had a very good friend who lived in Corpus we used to visit but she died last February.
I remember that blizzard. Did your parents live in Nebraska that year? Our snow was so high Dad had to go out an upstairs window and shovel his way down to the back door so we all could get out.
I left my snow shovels, one in Nebraska and the other in New Hampshire.
So again, Happy Birthday Anni!

ReplyDeleteThis really took me down the memory lane too. I so much remember the good old winters with heavy snow when I even went to school skiing - those where the days :-)
So one could say that you took the world by storm then :-)
ReplyDeleteThat made me remember this quote:
"A friend is like a rainbow. They brighten your life when you've been through a storm."
Great arriving. Exciting, as life always are.
Congrats x millions on your big day, may the rest of your life be filled with happiness, joy and laughter together with your beloved hubby.

Thanks for visiting my photo hunt.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine snow being heavy, seeing how it hardly snows in Mississippi and when it does it's just a light coat that melts not long after it falls.
Happy Birthday from a fellow birthday girl. Today is my birthday too.
~Alasandra
Happy Birthday Anni!!! Hope you have a wonderful birthday. Enjoy all that great food.
ReplyDeleteLiked your picture for this week. We just had a big snow storm here and I know snow is VERY heavy.

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to one of the sweetest ladies I have met in the blogosphere.
ReplyDeleteMy! you were born to be remembered, Anni, looking at what happened on the day you were born. I read the link and was shocked at the enormity of the blizzard.

Enjoyed the story of your birthday- nice how neighbors helped each other back then.

ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to you!!!
A very happy birthday Anni ! I think I am on time because it is Saturday 9, and 9.30 am ! My parents always told me that making birthday wishes BEFORE the birthday bring bad luck ! And wishing too early isn't polite, I can't throw you out of your bed before 9 am by ringing at your door ! The most important thing I wish for you is a good health that's the most important !
ReplyDeleteI see that already at your birth the road was cleaned like for a queen ! So much snow ! Of course I don't remember if we had snow or not because I was just 6 years old ! Celebrate your birthday well and have fun !

ReplyDeleteMy younger brother was born after a big snowstorm in early January. We don't get that many big storms in PA.
Have a great day!
Happy Birthday to you!
ReplyDeleteGreat snow story! That's amazing how all of the neighbors and the town helped your mother out when she was in labour with you.
The only snow picture I have that's even close to the one you've got is from the 70's. The snow that year was almost as high as the eves on the house. I know because I remember walking around our house pulling icicles off the house and I was only 5 years old! LOL
Happy, happy birthday, Anni!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely heavy! Happy birthday Anni and thanks for dropping by.
ReplyDeleteNice take on the theme. Happy Birthday. I wish you the best ;)
ReplyDeleteNow, I found the comment button! Great take on the theme! Your mom was still heavy with you and the surrounding was heavy with snow!
ReplyDelete=)
Happy Birthday!! AND WOW....that's alot of snow! I'm glad your mom made it to the hospital....a snow bank would NOT be a fun place to deliver (or be born!)
ReplyDeleteGo check out my heavy post...I think something there will make you smile!!

Happy Birthday to you.
ReplyDeleteThat sure is a lot of snow. I'm glad I am in TX and no longer have to shovel heavy snow.
Happy birthday! We have had ow like that here, it has been a while but I remember two or three years with snow like that. IT was insane.
ReplyDeleteHi Anni,
ReplyDeleteI've done some lurking here on your blog for a while but in honor of your birthday I'm coming out!! :)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DEAR ANNI!
Happy Happy Birthday!!! Trust me, life just keeps getting better - I hit the big six oh last October and so far so good. Love your idea for "heavy" and I'll be back. :D
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday. I can imagine the heavy snow and how difficult it must have been to travel. Thanks to all the good Samaritans who had helped.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago, I shoveled the snow around my house and driveway which piled up to more than 5 feel on both sides of my driveway. Schools were closed and we would be fined if we were found driving.
Great photo and I was interested in the info you gave. Happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteI grew up in the deep southern U.S. and rarely encountered snow. And the snow I did go through was never that heavy. The closest thing to hard work after a storm of any kind was in 1979 when Hurricane Frederick came through the town I was living in at the time (back when I was 16) and the morning after, local law enforcement came by and asked me to help clear some roads (I was in the Boy Scouts and pretty much all the law enforcement were friends of the family -- it was a small town). That was hard work but we removed several huge old oak trees.
Happy Birthday my dear friend. I hope you have a wonderful day and get to eat all of the things you love. May you be blessed with many more birthdays.
ReplyDeletePlease stop by my blog and pick up a little something that I made especially for you.
Blessings,
Mary
