The morning was mild, the wind was a bit brisk, and the channel was choppy. But it was pleasant when I walked the beach! Not only many small shells washed ashore, [I was wishing I could find a shark's tooth like Martha did!] but I spotted several washed up starfish! I grabbed one on the way back after I finished my walk and took it home. After it dried for a couple of days, I then took a soft bristled toothbrush and cleaned the sand off, then soaked it in a bleach and water solution. It's now sitting on the counter next to all my sand dollars and crucifix fish carcass. They're called crucifix fish because the skeleton resembles Christ at the cross. I did a search on my blog table of contents and found a link to a previous post: See here. Anyway, a pleasant day all the way around. On the way home I stopped at the farmer's market and bought mangoes and some freshly baked cranberry/orange muffins....
Wow, this Crucifix Fish is amazing! I have never heard of them. Do people eat them? So the Starfish was dead and dried out...do they all wash up on the beach when they are dying? You can tell I know nothing about this.
ReplyDeleteI have seen gulls eating them on the beach (both fish & starfish) so...the current is washing them ashore alive.
DeletePretty cool find. Maybe not so much for the starfish but a nice addition to your collection.
ReplyDeleteIt probably won't last long, they're very fragile. Arms break off even when alive (I think I read that somewhere ...not sure)
DeleteHello Anni,
ReplyDeleteCool find. Love the shots with the White Ibis! Take care, enjoy your day!
That small pond was loaded with white,at the time...ibis, egrets & white pelicans.
DeleteWhat a find! You always run across critters I never heard of before, much less see. It looked like that one was waving to you. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt was! ☺
DeleteThere have been thousands of live starfish washing up on SC beaches recently.Yes, thousands! In the past I have found dead ones and processed them to be clean and dry for display.
ReplyDeleteWonder what's causing so many to wash ashore?
DeleteI did go to the link and look at the crucifix skeleton and I've never seen anything like it and had never heard of it or read anything about it and I did read the first comment. The starfish you found this time it's really a nice one I've never found one on the beach but I used to see them in the gift shops all the time
ReplyDeleteThey are found on the shore certain times of year.
DeleteGreat photos as always Anni. Glad you found a starfish, I find them here often too. Sorry you didn't find a shark tooth. Are you anywhere near Bolivar Peninsula? I've read that is a hot spot for them.
ReplyDeleteNo, that peninsula is over 200 miles from us...close to Galveston Texas
DeleteYou had a great day! Those muffins sound so yummy. Beautiful shots!
ReplyDeleteThey are...of all muffins, they are my favorite flavor.
DeleteBoy did that starfish clean up nice. Hope he lasts for you. I have only found one sharks tooth. They were drilling my water well in Florida and in the stuff that came up from 150 feet was a sharks tooth. Makes one realize that long ago, our world looked a lot different.
ReplyDeleteNow THAT was an amazing find!
DeleteWonderful treasures Anni!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Crucifix fish is amazing!!!
You share so many wonderful treasures and lovey photos with us...Thank You Anni !!!
I'm glad you enjoy your visits here, Jan.
DeleteWhat a nice day with a lot of good finds. (The muffins, especially!)
ReplyDeleteI try to buy them often, when I crave something tart/sweet.
DeleteWhat a great beach outing and to have the pleasure of finding a starfish to bring home, the icing on the cake. Thanks for sharing ~ FlowerLady
ReplyDeleteP.S. Thank you for your kind, encouraging comment on my latest post.
I'm glad you stopped by Lorraine.
DeleteInteresting finds on the beach and pretty photos. I have never heard of a crucifix fish before. I have never come across any starfish washed up on the beach before. Jellyfish yes. Just popped in to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving Anni. So, Happy Thanksgiving! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Denise.
DeleteOh what a wonderful walk and treasures you found. I love the starfish. I didn't know that was how you preserved it. I guess that's why I like Blogging so much. Friends and new information.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day.
Sue
They are many ways to preserve things from the sea.
DeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you and your B too.
ReplyDeleteIt will just be us here but that is ok....traveling just is not in the cards this Holiday.
WE had a nice walk around Shelley Lake today. Dodo me had my camera on night setting...not sure how that happened but I kicked myself a few times. lOL
Hugs to you
Cecilia
Done that before. My most stupid move was leaving my SD card home, but had the empty camera with me.
DeleteYou know I love your shore scenes, because these are things I don’t get to see here.
ReplyDelete...as I like YOUR photos for the very same reason.
DeleteYou game home with some great finds. It must be so nice to take a walk along the beach. It's been many years since I've been to a beach.
ReplyDeleteI would miss the beach. After living landlocked for most of my life, it's my way now!
DeleteSounds like it was a great outing with some treasures to take home! Great close-up shot of your starfish. I've always been intrigued by the way starfish travel across the sand and leave their "trails" behind. We used to take many treasures home from Florida vacations, including bleached starfish, sand dollars and sea urchins.
ReplyDeleteI have dozens of sand dollars, but, alas, no sea urchins. Yet!
DeleteIt certainly looks and sounds a very "pleasant day all the way around".
ReplyDeleteLovely photographs, a treat to see them, thank you.
Enjoy the remainder of your week.
All the best Jan
It was a great morning.
DeleteThe starfish brings back warm memories...we went to a tide pool area once. My father fished and we collected starfish. They lasted a long time.
ReplyDeleteOh yes...great memories!
DeleteI like the starfish, and their tracks on the beach. So cool!
ReplyDeleteClose up of oil tanker looks scary.
ReplyDeleteStay Safe and Coffee is on
The starfish is amazing!
ReplyDeleteI have always admired them!
That starfish is so beautiful!😊😊
ReplyDeleteI have never seen one before, only in photos.
You have made me long to stroll on the beach now...I haven't been there at all this year🙄
Maybe next year...😊😊
Have a great day!
Hugs xxx
I loved today's photographs...for some reason the one with all the birds flying just really appealed to me. I almost think it is the sense of freedom they have.
