The morning was mild, the wind was a bit brisk, and the channel was choppy. But it was pleasant when I walked the beach! Not only many small shells washed ashore, [I was wishing I could find a shark's tooth like Martha did!] but I spotted several washed up starfish! I grabbed one on the way back after I finished my walk and took it home. After it dried for a couple of days, I then took a soft bristled toothbrush and cleaned the sand off, then soaked it in a bleach and water solution. It's now sitting on the counter next to all my sand dollars and crucifix fish carcass. They're called crucifix fish because the skeleton resembles Christ at the cross. I did a search on my blog table of contents and found a link to a previous post: See here. Anyway, a pleasant day all the way around. On the way home I stopped at the farmer's market and bought mangoes and some freshly baked cranberry/orange muffins....

Wow, this Crucifix Fish is amazing! I have never heard of them. Do people eat them? So the Starfish was dead and dried out...do they all wash up on the beach when they are dying? You can tell I know nothing about this.
ReplyDeleteI have seen gulls eating them on the beach (both fish & starfish) so...the current is washing them ashore alive.

ReplyDeleteIt probably won't last long, they're very fragile. Arms break off even when alive (I think I read that somewhere ...not sure)

That small pond was loaded with white,at the time...ibis, egrets & white pelicans.

DeleteThere have been thousands of live starfish washing up on SC beaches recently.Yes, thousands! In the past I have found dead ones and processed them to be clean and dry for display.

DeleteI did go to the link and look at the crucifix skeleton and I've never seen anything like it and had never heard of it or read anything about it and I did read the first comment. The starfish you found this time it's really a nice one I've never found one on the beach but I used to see them in the gift shops all the time

DeleteGreat photos as always Anni. Glad you found a starfish, I find them here often too. Sorry you didn't find a shark tooth. Are you anywhere near Bolivar Peninsula? I've read that is a hot spot for them.

DeleteBoy did that starfish clean up nice. Hope he lasts for you. I have only found one sharks tooth. They were drilling my water well in Florida and in the stuff that came up from 150 feet was a sharks tooth. Makes one realize that long ago, our world looked a lot different.

DeleteSounds like it was a great outing with some treasures to take home! Great close-up shot of your starfish. I've always been intrigued by the way starfish travel across the sand and leave their "trails" behind. We used to take many treasures home from Florida vacations, including bleached starfish, sand dollars and sea urchins.

DeleteThe starfish brings back warm memories...we went to a tide pool area once. My father fished and we collected starfish. They lasted a long time.

I loved today's photographs...for some reason the one with all the birds flying just really appealed to me. I almost think it is the sense of freedom they have.
