“Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it?”

~Thornton Wilder " Our Town " The Ritz, Opening Day, Christmas 1929 - - Opening day for the Ritz Theatre was an exciting one. It was Christmas day, 1929. Patrons were anxious to escape the reality of the stock market crash, just 3 months before, and the beginning of what would become the Great Depression. The first show at the Ritz was “It’s a Great Life” starring the Duncan Sisters. The feature was presented by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and included selected shorts. The story was about two sisters working in the sheet-music section of a large department store. They get fired, enter vaudeville (variety shows), split up when one of them falls in love with a piano player (Lawrence Gray), become re-united and finally return to the stage. The film included songs such as “Sailing on a Sunbeam” by Dave Dryer and Ballard MacDonald. Ticket prices were 30 cents for adults and 10 cents for children, although the lower floor price was raised to a whopping 50 cents later. The

Soft sculptured Bespeckled Witch's Face Macro-eyezed!! MONDAY MORSELS When walking this trail, in any season, I am constantly reminded of two of my favorites; in literature. One [when we walk across the small wooden walkway, and then come upon a bridge hidden in the coarse, dense, overgrowth of trees with a trickling, sometimes motionless, brook underneath], I'm reminded of Ichabod Crane mounted on his old worn out horse; Gunpowder. [Legend of Sleepy Hollow]. " If I can but reach that bridge ," thought Ichabod, " I am safe. " Just then he heard the black steed panting and blowing close behind him; he even fancied that he felt his hot breath. Another convulsive kick in the ribs, and old Gunpowder sprang upon the bridge; he thundered over the resounding planks; he gained the opposite side; and now Ichabod cast a look behind to see if his pursuer should vanish, according to rule, in a flash of fire and brimstone. Just then h

Seaside Shadows - Sunday Summary

- - - SUNDAY'S SUMMARY Well, not much going on here. Last week I mentioned we trimmed back plants and bushes - all drought damaged. I noticed Friday when we came home from the beach that the crepe myrtle that was dried up and so highly parched - after trimming it back last week, there is now a bunch of new growth on all of them. Nice!!! Walked the beaches a while... while I only took my cellphone with me while walking the shore, I had in mind to hunt and capture an eclectic array of shadows for today. Also, wanting to try the picasa software for making collages....I've seen so many 'cool' ones on others' blogs! I installed and made these two collages above. Now, tho it's a real nifty free software from Google, after working with it to make the two above, I explored a bit on the program. I realized that it actually COPIES EACH AND EVERY IMAGE ON MY COMPUTER! 1000s!! Which in turn uses a lot of memory and I saw no option of preferences. I hav

Just 'round the riverbend......

I mentioned several times throughout that in the deep south of the coastal bend here in Texas, we DO experience seasonal changes. And we HAVE had snow before. Just nothing that lasts for weeks ---only about an hour or two; melting rapidly. But WE DO have some trees that change color. Thing is, our "Autumn" colors come in the dead of winter!---'Round mid-December. I also mentioned that I had photos in my computer's image folder...it was just taking the time finding them, and I did! These photos are taken a couple of years ago on a warm, sunny day in December of 2009. Along the banks of the Nueces River here near the outskirts of the city.... I read about a book I'm interested in finding....I like finding older books that are first edition. So, I'll be searching the online used book sellers and go to our Half Price Books in search. There are several out there on the very subject, so hopefully I can find the one I'm thinking of looking for...&

I found these ' lyrics ' [parody, if you will] to the tune of Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. For the fun of the season of Halloween, I thought I'd add some photos to it all; and share... Oh, you better not shriek, you better not groan, You better not howl, you better not moan. The Grim Reaper is coming to town! He's gonna find out from folks that he meets, Who should have arsenic put in their treats. Grim Reaper is coming to town! He'll search in every graveyard, Haunted houses far and near, To see if you should stay alive, Or die right here in fear! So, you better not shriek, you better not groan, You better not howl, you better not moan. The Grim Reaper is coming to town! photos are from our dining room corner tables...the grim corner

Halloween Candle Holders with slime-green candles and 'weenie green webbing MACRO-style MONDAY MORSELS Oftentimes I read thoughts on how the stores have Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas decorations and knick-knacks all in one season; and beginning sometimes right after the school items leave the shelves in August. So many times I hear, read, and listen to shoppers' complaints. And I'm not even in retail. But, most of the disgust comes from a personal opinion, and a lot of times I've agreed with it all. Notice the past tense in my last line. But to those of us who think so one-sidedly, I must point out my afterthoughts on this...through a retailers eyes/mind. Think about it. The state of economy in this country and around the world has been going down the drain for several years. And it's getting worse before it gets better. In order for a franchise or private shop to make money to stay ahead there are several factors for bringing out mas

Haunted House and Haunted Tree. Found 'em this year at the Dollar Store for decorating our entertainment center. Perhaps the shadows are haunted?!!? By the way...the post title, remember these words from decades past? An old radio program? From the 1930s? No, I wasn't born back then [close!]...but, my parents were avid listeners. Back in 'their day' radio was a means of communication...the only means, electronically. And they had records of these programs on 33 1/3 rpm vinyl records. Remember records? Now those I can remember. LOL from wikipedia Even after decades, the unmistakable introduction from The Shadow radio program, long-intoned by actor Frank Readick Jr., has earned a place in the American idiom: "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" These words were accompanied by an ominous laugh and a musical theme, Camille Saint-Saëns' Le Rouet d'Omphale ("Omphale's Spinning Wheel", composed in 1

See him? WEEKEND FUNNIES cartoon from Google Search for "Halloween Jokes" An extremely modest man was in the hospital for a series of tests, which had left his bodily systems extremely upset. Upon making several false alarm trips to the bathroom, he decided the latest episode was another and stayed put. He suddenly filled his bed with diarrhea and was embarrassed beyond his ability to remain rational. In a complete loss of composure he jumped out of bed, gathered up the bed sheets, and threw them out the hospital window. A drunk was walking by the hospital when the sheets landed on him. He started yelling, cursing, and swinging his arms violently trying to get the unknown things off, and ended up with the soiled sheets in a tangled pile at his feet. As the drunk stood there staring down at the sheets, a hospital security guard who watched the whole incident walked up and asked, "What the heck is going on?" The drunk, still staring d

A week's worth of Fragmented thoughts and happenin's!! Just about 30 miles northeast of us yesterday morning....7:30 something.... a 4.8 earthquake hit . I never felt a thing, tho. Then, the St. Louis Cardinals are pitted against them since they beat the Brewers last Sunday night. My money is on the Cardinals. Better weather, finally...at last!! Me thinks the everlasting inferno has ceased for the year. Temps are back to normal. Rec'd a travel pamphlet in snail mail the other day...maybe a long weekend trip for us soon. This is the best time of year to go somewhere - cooler temps, Hurricane Season is about vanished 'cause the Gulf water temps are below 80 degrees. I'm thinking of swearing off following all politicking this upcoming presi
