PHOTO HUNT: BULKY---[bulky plumage] CAMERA CRITTER
I'm going to use the same photo for Photo Hunt AND Camera Critter this week. Bulky, of course, is something that is large size for its own weight....being a sea gull. This photo to the left was taken at Whitecap Beach on Padre Island. They look larger than their own weight. When you carry one in your hand they seem almost weightless, yet look rather large just glancing at them. This particular species is the "Laughing Gull". To identify the laughing gull you'd notice the size [medium to large] the back/wings are slate gray with the breast and underbelly being white with wingtips black. Now the head....during breeding season it's all black...otherwise gray/black flecked. The Juvenile is a dusky brown overall. Head gray brown, paler on forehead and chin. First winter plumage: Back gray, but wings brown. After their first summer do they become marked as seen in the photo. They are quite abundant along the Gulf of Mexico among other different species. Their call is quite like 'laughing and giggling', hence their name...

I am sitting here melting trying to imagine your brass monkeys! LOL! Its so hot down here, and apparently we are in for a few days of it yet! Woh is me! I plan to pack the ice pack and take the kids to the beach to see it out tomorrow! Today was just too much for us all!
Well THAT was frustrating! I was just ready to post a rather lengthy comment when Mozilla crashed. Hopefully it will cooperate and let me try again. Let's see ... where was I? Oh yez ... I do love your sense of humor and am sorry it's so cold where you live. I heard that parts of Texas are colder than the North Pole this year. Somehow it's hard to focus on 'global warming' looking at wintry scenes across the nation. Fortunately the ocean is a great stabilizing force so it's fairly mild where I live.
I got carried away while sharing 'tamale-making' at Sacred Ruminations yesterday afternoon and evening ... so this morning I'm hoping to catch up on blog visits before the day actually begins ... just a couple of blessings of this retired life. Wishing you a wonderful weekend ;-) Hugs and blessings,
Do you know the derivation of the saying? The monkey was metal frame that held cannon balls. When it got cold enough the frame would shrink so much the balls rolled off. Since I've known that, the saying has made me shiver all the more.
No that is funny.... My grandmother used to say that is was colder than Witches tits in a brass bra! ahahhah Now where in the world did that come from! Warming up here today to a balmy 20 degrees..... SWEET!
Is that anything like being hotter than a witches tit in a brass bra? LOL. Too funny. Poor monkey. Loved the photo my friend. Bulky indeed. Have a great day :) Oh and by the way, yes I knew I had paint I just didn't know I could do that kinda thing with that program either...the things we learn :)
I like your new template. The header is very pretty; did you do that???
Cold and hot are relative. ;) Here in NY, it was 18 degrees last night, and some were wearing shorts at the store. lol. What I find unbelievable is hot you guys tolerate that vicious HEAT!! I'd melt once the red hit 85!!
I goofed for Photo Hunters this week, and did "12" instead of "Bulky." :S Oops. But I decided to leave it up because it's appropriate for this week... and because I didn't want to spend an hour doing a different post! I hope you can visit.
Ani -- sorry your're freezing your...well freezing! Nice capture of the Laughing Gull. We remember them well from our time spent in Port A. One time I called my mother (in the Northwest) from my chair on the beach and she thought I was hanging out in a noisy bar b/c of all the laughter and shouts in the background. Innocent I was I tell you -- in the company of nobody but the laughing gulls!
This morning when Honey Bear was checking the weather in various places he travels to, I had him check Corpus Christi. You're having unusual weather there, too. Do you even have a heater? Mama Bear
Oh my.. Those brass monkeys are TOO-ooo FUNNY!!! Glad to see the cold hasn't robbed you of your sense of humor!! (0; Thanks for the laughs Anni!.. Hope you're keeping warm, and enjoying your weekend!! ~tina
